How I Downsized My Blu Ray Collection - Going Over My Movie Collection

  • Well folks, it's finally here, the new year, and time to rethink how I want to collect Blu-rays, 4Ks, DVDs, and other physical media. Naturally that means taking stuff out of the collection that you don't want, and making room for new titles. Here's my process and how I downsized my Blu-Ray Collection.
    It's intimidating to downsize a collection, especially with the regret of getting rid of things you once paid money for. This wasn't as big of a downsize as I might like, but it's a start to make things clearer for the new year. My tastes and likes have changed over the years, so it's time to go out with the old and in with the new for my Blu-Ray Collection.

    People shouldn't be afraid to allow their collections to be fluid from time to time. Trimming it down is not only necessary after a point, but can be liberating and fun.
    I've never had the biggest collection - it's always hovering around 500/600 titles/discs but it's changed a lot over the years with pruning and shifting interests.
    For example: I used to collect every Marvel film. Then I realized, a few films aside, I don't REALLY care about them that much. So I got rid of them. That was like 30 discs right there of free space that can now be taken up by titles that I REALLY love and desire.
    Treat your collection like a garden, friends. It's not just about growing, but pruning, cutting, and weeding. It will make you happier.

      Like I keep saying, your collection is YOUR collection for a reason! Nicely put!

    First and foremost, great collection! Some of the stuff you are getting rid of would be upgrades to many movies which I currently have on DVD, so it's all about perspective and what you value. I still have the first five Halloween movies on regular DVD, along with the entire Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street series. Over time, I let my collection get too large and cumbersome to store because I was of the mindset that buying stuff at bargain prices (like the $5 bin) was the same price as a rental, or less, and I accumulated many blind buys over time doing this. I came to realize a few years ago that this was a big mistake and I ended up doing a partial purge of my collection. I also moved many movies into paper sleeves and got rid of the cases (but kept the slip covers). Now things are a lot more manageable and I am very selective what I buy now. The number of purchases that I make are way less now too.

      Thank you for the kind words! I get that, the $5 blind buy is a hell of a drug.

    My problem is, I don’t know how many times I downsized just to wish I hadn’t gotten rid of something. It sucks being wierd.

      That's why the downsizing is so hard, the regret of getting rid of things is hard.

    When I get movies I don't like, I sell them right away. Sometimes I'll through my movie collection and if I see something I haven't watched in over a year I determine if I want to keep it or sell it. I just want to have movies I'll watch more than once. I don't keep anything I don't like and I only buy movies I think I may enjoy

    Been doing the same upgrading dvds to blu-rays and to 4ks. Im only getting films I enjoy now, but alot of my 20th century will most likely ever see a updated version because of Disney. I have so many dvds that didn't get a blu-ray upgrade.

    • @HunterBoldingVideo
      @HunterBoldingVideo  6 месяцев назад +1

      The 20th Century stuff is definitely staying in my collection if it doesn't have an upgrade. Such BS that they're sitting on such a large library that could use upgrades.

    I used to collect every horror film I could get because my goal was to open a niche based video store. But, my dreams are dead so I'm in the same boat as you and many others now. Gonna have to downsize to keep collecting stuff that is important to actually have in my collection, going forward. Thanks! J.

      Your dreams don't have to die, you can just rethink the scope of them, having your own "video store" to yourself is still well within reach!

    What do you typically do with the movies you no longer want?

    • @HunterBoldingVideo
      @HunterBoldingVideo  6 месяцев назад +3

      I either find someone I know who would want them, or I go to a store that takes them for trade-in credit. If there's something that would be really expensive, I might list it on eBay.

    If I upgrade a Blu ray to a 4K Blu Ray and the 4K doesn't have the special feature that is on the Blu ray I pop the Blu ray into a paper sleeve and put it in the 4K case

    • @HunterBoldingVideo
      @HunterBoldingVideo  6 месяцев назад

      That's a smart way to go about it, might have to consider that going forward.

      That’s ghetto lol. Most of the time, the 4k’s going to come with the same blu ray that was out prior……and if not why not just put the blu ray in a 2 disc case with the 4k . . . . . . .

    • @Sammy_X7

      I don't care for special features so that blu-ray is going straight to the trash can.

    I like keeping everything unless I really hate it. I view older editions kinda as a momento, something cool to look at. Your memory of picking up Halloween 4 and 5 at Best Buy on a rainy Southern California day will be lost forever…..jk, I know its kinda a hoarder mentality, which is okay if you have a good place for it. My thing is, the collection has to look nice & neat. I agree with you though on curating, having a collection of movies you like owning.

      That's why this was so difficult, do I need this many copies of Halloween 4? Probably not. Do I like having that blu-ray as the memory of that rainy SoCal day? Of course I do. 😭

    Would have been something to have a Mel Gibson version of Spaceballs.
    I replace movies when I upgrade them. Thinking about it, have almost everything I want on either DVD, Blu Ray or 4K, which is a sweet spot to be in. Not counting new releases. Have moved on titles that I will never watch again. Only really want something that means something to me, and I would watch multiple times.

    • @HunterBoldingVideo
      @HunterBoldingVideo  6 месяцев назад

      That's really where I'm leaning for most things besides Vinegar Syndrome at this point. I like their titles because it feels like going to the video store, but outside of that, unless I get it from work, I'm not spending up.

      And goddamn, I think Mel Brooks would pay to see Mel Gibson's version of Spaceballs. 🤣

    I throw away nothing I take each disc rip it to a server and then place the DVDs and Blu ray's in a storage bend and pack them away out of sight.

    Your spoiled for first watching The Thing in HD on the old blu ray. I grew up with a taped off HBO copy recorded onto a VHS that was watched dozens of times. Never owned it on DVD, that old studio blu was my first bought copy, then I got the 4k, which you don't seem to have. Never knew about the uncensored dvd commentary but don't think I'd buy a dvd just for a commentary.

    • @HunterBoldingVideo
      @HunterBoldingVideo  6 месяцев назад

      I only upgrade things to 4K if the picture quality upgrade is really worth it or there's some sort of new special features, with the Thing, I didn't feel like the 4K upgrade was necessary.
      But that's awesome about the VHS copy, I watched the movie for the first time on HBO as well!
