  • BMW's X5 isn't exactly a spring chicken, but BMW has done an excellent job of keeping their mid-sized SUV up to date with constant changes, new engines, improved plug in hybrids and more options, gadgets, and gizmos available than most of the competition put together. To demo what the X5 has to offer, BMW sent me a fire-breathing X5M for the week, and, well, MMMMM.

That darn Explorer was barely being dropped by much higher speeds, and we did it like 3 times!” Almost bought a BM3 that day to flash it 😂.

PHENOMENAL. I’m replacing a Plaid with FSD. I was like “Does Tesla not test these? THIS is what we want!”
I thought I’d NEVER take my hands off a car’s wheel after driving 3 Tesla models 30-50k the past 4 years.
I let my 50e drive hands-off probably 3k of the 6k miles it has accumulated the past 7 weeks (I drive a lot).
And I never thought I’d let a car park, as I’m a great driver and am quicker. But it’s so quick, natural, and easy that I say “Why not? I paid for it” 😂
And I need Tesla to see what Summon SHOULD do.
Summon should let me get out and pull the car into a spot. It should remember how to back into my garage around the trash can when it’s at the edge of the driveway. It should take me through the Chick Fil A drive-through 😂.
Yes people, the car does that! It’s PHENOMENAL.
If I want it out of the garage as I lower the bikes…Yup.
Summon would go “Eh, we’re too close to the garage divider” BMW says “Whelp, you said this was the way and you should be watching” 😂 But it’s highly useable.
I can make the BMW move to another side of the driveway so I can put another car in the garage. It’s PHENOMENAL!

Yes; it's easy to see how these luxury cars get totaled out so fast. I have a similar story: I bought a new 2016 3 Series and took it in to get a clear bra installed. Well, the installer cut the clearbra on the headlights, and damaged the headlight housings. The LED headlight housings were $2K EACH -- for just the housings. And there's another $1-2K of modules attached to each housing as well, which of course were not damaged in this case, since there was no impact. But the body shop estimate was $5K with labor, just to replace two headlight housings - which the installer's insurance payed out to me. Imagine how high the bill would be if all the modules got smashed up in an accident, with other front end components.

I bought a new 3 Series in 2016 and owned it for 7 years. It was the most reliable vehicle I ever owned, even beating my new Honda and new Mazda. But most importantly, BMW isn't really about status, IMO. I mean, yes, it is a luxury car - of course. Some people do buy them for status. BUT I buy them for what they can do. They outperform and outhandle ordinary vehicles. It's not like a 3 Series is a tarted up Mazda 3, Elantra, or Civic, or something - a basic 3 Series is leaps and bounds more capable with way higher limits, than a normal compact car. If you've never owned one you wouldn't understand.
