I’m really confused on what I should order for language arts for first and second grade. There’s so many books. I just want the main books that i need to teach, workbooks, reader books… everything else that’s needed.
This was very helpful! I'm ordering some of the workbooks to get my 1st grader prepared for the private school she'll go to next year that uses Abeka. Do you think the teacher manuals are necessary for the language arts/phonics subjects? Thanks!
Hi! Honestly I’m not sure. We use the video led approach for phonics and language. So the online teacher walks through the lecture with her. But I’m thinking you will need the teacher guide, just because it will have the instructions and lecture how to complete the pages. I don’t think you will need the Teacher Key for the answers. As they are easy to figure out on your own.

Hi Tania Woods. I would say with purchasing both, you would have a complete lesson for language building skills. The phonics and sounds actually work on sounding out the words using phonic sounds. The language is more for building sentences and a language foundation. I feel like without the phonics you can’t build words. I would say the the phonics and sounds book would be the one I would purchase if I could only purchase one. But, if you can purchase the language book later on, I would. I hope this is helpful. But, purchase what feels right to you. That is only my opinion. 😉
Hi. I've watched this video a ton of times, but I still have worries about Abeka 1. My son is currently doing Masterbooks Phonics lessons and will then move on to Language lessons for a living education 1 but I'm still afraid it won't get him where he needs to be to do this.
Hi Jocelyn. Have you thought about working through the K5 letters and sounds workbook through Abeka and then moving on the the language 1? That is if you want to go to Abeka for Language. I think Abeka’s workbook is about $20. I’m not familiar with Masterbooks curriculum so it’s hard for me to give my opinion or advice. You can also always purchase Abekas K5 Blend book and first readers. It gives a great phonic foundation to learn how to read. I hope this is helpful and not more confusing. 😉 I’m sure whatever you choose, it will be the best for your son.

My husband went to a private Christian school and used Abeka for English and he thinks it's the best. He is also the grammar king and his Abeka schooling helped him in seminary with Greek and Hebrew. Everytime I look at Abeka, it looks really good and thorough but I have to ask, is it overwhelming?
Oh I see. That’s awesome about your husband. It is definitely a strong curriculum. I think it can be overwhelming if you let it. If you make it your own and use the curriculum to your liking, it will be less overwhelming. 🙄 If that makes sense?!? 🙈
