I love that you teach phonics. If all elementary schools taught phonics, there would be no literacy crisis in the US.

I have a first grader. It is great to see you NOT doing all the grammar. My son is reading alongside his 2nd grade sister, so I clumped him in with her grammar last year in K. By January, he was feeling pretty overwhelmed! This is my first go around with my oldest 2, so I wasn't quite sure what they needed to know/do. I appreciate your strategy for focusing on reading. This looks like it'll be a GREAT year! Lots of food for thought. I love your videos, and thank you for sharing!

I intend to introduce speed drills to my kids by having my kids time me doing “my math”.
Making it almost a game for all of us!
I hope this helps someone who is nervous about it.
    Great picks!

Hi Angie! I did Abeka 1 Language/Phonics/Arithmetic with my girls when they were in 1st grade and it really set them for success in later years! I cant recommend this program enough, Im sure you feel the same having done it before. The only thing I added that in hindsight I wish I hadn't (like you mentioned) was the Abeka Spelling1. I got lots of tears from it, and realized kind of late that it was too advanced. We switched that out for Explode The Code level 2, it was a great Spelling supplement because it breaks down words into its very simplest forms, they picked it up easily and this increased their spelling confidence! Your twins will have such a great year, especially with a mama that has so much experience 😊

We use Christian Light math and it has speed drills all the way through 4th grade. They definitely help with fact fluency. I explain that there is nothing good or bad that happens as a result of how they do on these, they are just for practice.

I will have my last 1st grader this coming year too! I have used Abeka Math for elementary years; I only wish I was better about requiring drills and timetables. My son started his math book early. It will be my first time using Language as he’s ready to move faster after having completed 2/3 of AAR1. We will also use Ambleside Online.

Can you list what exactly you use to teach abeka phonics and math? I'm always overwhelmed by all the additional materials

Actually, I have specific videos on my channel for both Abeka phonics resources and math resources ... although I do like all the resources, so I might be the wrong person to ask :)

My youngest is going to be going into first this coming year. It's very bitter sweet. That only subject i am nervous about is Spelling. We have always struggled on this subject with all 3 of my kids for the 4 years we've been homeschooling. This year we are trying Spelling Connections 🤞.

Good luck, you got it! I have found that spelling has been a struggle for all my kids ... it wasn't until last year when my 4th grader started to seem like he was getting it! I think its a developmental thing!

Have you used math with confidence? How would you compare it to Abeka math? Also, are you still incorporating all about reading? Or are you no longer using AAR? ❤

We have never used Math with Confidence. We are not longer using AAR, but it was the exact curriculum my son needed to build confidence before we switched into Abeka ... which was the curriculum that helped him get to fluency.

Do you think you could go from AAR 1 into abeka phonics grade 1? My daughter isn't loving aar

They teach pretty differently, but I would say that Abeka grade 1 is a good place to start!

Did you do the early Saxon math levels? Any of the k-3 programs? If so, how do they compare to Abeka? And wondering what it is you prefer? Is Abeka less parent input or more enjoyable?

    • @sciencemama
      @sciencemama  2 месяца назад +3

I have used Saxon 1-3. I feel like they are comparable in teacher involvement. I prefer Abeka only because Saxon had this thing called the morning meeting which just became very repetitive and drove me nuts. I also like that Abeka is in color … but Abeka does have more resources (flash cards, etc) than Saxon, so that might make a difference!

@@sciencemama I'm using Saxon 3 now and that morning meeting thing is driving me nuts!!!
I eventually stopped doing it everyday and switched to once a week review time.

We use Saxon but dropped the meeting book. It was truly making me resent homeschooling. Knowing we won’t have it this year has been such a relief
