Fratello Talks: The Most Important Watches Of The Last Five Years

- Welcome to the year's third episode of Fratello Talks. Today, Nacho is joined by Morgan and RJ to discuss the most important watches of the last five years. We looked back and carefully selected nine pieces that we consider to be the most influential, impactful, and interesting horological creations of the last half-decade. Swiss watch brands present hundreds (if not thousands) of new watches each year. In an effort to innovate, iterate, and attract potential customers around the world, these brands are on an endless quest to expand their catalogs. However, not all new watches are created equal. These nine are the ones we consider to have had the greatest impact on the world of watches.
Most important watches I would say
GS Kodo - showing what Japanese watch can do
Omega Moonswatch - branching out to regular consumers
CW’s belcanto - removing the veil in higher end watchmaking
Tissot PRX - showing past designs recreated can become huge success for brands
Tag Heuer Glassbox - attention to watch collectors opinion and new ideas can help brands renew their reputation
I'm not surprised, because it's not Swiss and it's not automatic, but it's a shame that the Citizen "The Citizen" 0100 caliber with an annual accuracy or +-1 second wasn't mentioned. It's an incredible feat!
The citizen is marvelous
A beautiful watch indeed, and quite an accomplishment. But it simply didn't make our personal top 3s, also because the design wasn't equally impressive.

Excellent picks guys!! I completely agree with the 2022 Tiffany Nautilus, production was low of course, but the bang was so big that it's hard not to mention.
In regards to a steel 5811, I think it's logical to assume that Patek will reintroduce their current time and date Nautilus in steel for their 50th anniversary which is just 2 years away by now! It will doubtlessly be a huge year for the Nautilus in general as the 40th year saw some big Nautilus releases as well, and the big 50 is of course very significant!

Another great episode. One watch that I may have considered is the JLC Hybris Reverso that was set using a clever 'setting box'. An engineering master class. This thing was out of this world. Only 10 made so not exactly readily available so I'm more than OK that it's not featured. It was good to hear Tissot mentioned as well, the PRX is a great way I think to bring more people into the watch community. I like the chronograph too.
Greatly enjoy these watch specific talks, extremely informative and informal. I don’t see the present crew showing up at Paris fashion week talking watches. Fratello is the only game in town now. I hope this crown doesn’t get too comfortable for them. The full bastardizing of watches and fashion has happened at hodinkee there is not much more to say.
I was thinking the same thing. That Hodinkee episode is unwatchable.

Great conversation, gentlemen. I would have to say the MoonSwatch may be the most memorable of the last 5 years. It seems like the watch that may have democratized watches, but the PRX is similar in that it ushered in more non watch people to the hobby. Enjoyed this topic!

For me I would have gone with the Christopher Ward Bel Canto. I think it will have long term implications - both in terms of watch companies doing more for less money - but also in terms of showing different / complicated watches have mass market appeal.
Great choices; although the Daytona is a bit of a stretch since the open caseback could be a ‘1 and done’ and thus have no lasting mark on the brand.
Most important watches of the past five years - Invicta pro diver, Casioak, and Apple watch 19.
I think the surge of integrated bracelet luxury sports watches is significant over past five years.

I wonder how the Code 59.11 would have been received if AP had named it differently. I feel this was their grand stand of saying “We’re not just the Royal Oak brand!” and they bombed on the name so badly.
Should have mentioned the Octo Finissimo especially in stainless steel.
Yes, we discussed it before we went recording, but the Octo Finissimo dates to 2014. The steel version came later though.

Personally the 3861 Speedy Pro made my list because it was finally a Moonwatch I could wear on a bracelet with a smaller wrist. And a great watch all round. A few there I'd agree with (FXD, PRX), some not but of course, that's what makes this a great 'hobby'. Troubled waters for the industry based on these: when the coronet makes a couple of tweaks to a watch and it's one of the most important watches of the last five years. And a new blue on a wildly over-priced LE last of breed. Praying for some things properly special in 2024.

Correct. But the current model is at least also certified water resistant to 50 meters (+ 10 percent).

What about the automatic chronographs ? Zenith even produced a wrist watch chronograph capable of measuring 1/100th second (50 Hertz chronograph movement) !

It's funny to hear the FXD (with all the cues from vintage Tudor designs like the early subs with fixed bars) being called "new" and "never seen before". It's a fixed bar dive watch, folks.
It's even funnier to hear that a 4000 buck watch is said to be affordable and even democratizing. This price point is aspirational to most of the world. You've been able to pick up a CWC dive watch with fixed bars for less than a fifth of that price for years now. Then you're able to pick up and Orient Kamasu dive watch for 250 bucks. That is an affordable and democratising watch, folks.
You all have been breathing rarified Swiss luxury air for too long, I'm afraid.
As far as the top 3 iconic watches are concerned, I think the Tank, Reverso and Calatrava round out that trio. The Speedmaster is a bit of a Fratello construct, I'd say, but "most iconic"? I can name three different Cartier desings that are instantly more iconic. Tank, Santos, Crash, et voila.

The FXD is a completely original model for Tudor and $4K is low-end luxury bro. Nobody cares about people in the 3rd world not being able to afford it.

Great format and content, as always. Note: in the video, it's the winner's watch for the 24-hour race of Le Mans but not the special Rolex Daytona for the 100th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which Morgan was referring to.
Correct, we showed the winner's watch, not the 100th-anniversary watch with 24-hour recorder.

I like Fratello very much, but why is the focus on hyperexpensive watches, which are only for a dozens of extremely wealthy individuals. I think that those people are a fraction of watch enthusiasts and spotlight on on them should be minimal. You are in fact talking about a margin of horology. Be more practical. Watch prices are madness, maybe promoting a good product for an adequate price would be a better approach. Lets marginalise this crazy "luxury" extremum. More expensive is not exactly better.
PS. I'm not talking about Omega and Tudor but abut Patek, AP, limited Daytonas etc. Are they really so important or only expensive/overpriced?
You think the PRX is hyperexpensive at €775? We try to cater to a broad audience, so you’ll find us talking about watches in all price ranges.
I've felt disconnected when you were taliking about $50k Le Mans Daytona. No hard feelings. I still love your content, just expressed my feelings.
