During a tour of his country, King Matthias the just, comes across a sign in a village: The judge of this village does not have a care in the world! Well, the King gives him an assignment, saying if he does not solve it, he will be beheaded. The judge, with the help of his daughter fulfils the assignment and the King generously rewards her.

Where there's a mayor who "doesn't have any problem or care", it means he must not care about the problems of his village. So the punishment is just fair.
There's a detail that got lost in translation, in the Hungarian original Matthias actually gives a pretty legit reason for this whole charade. He reasoned if the mayor has no worries in his life, there's no way to know if he cares about his town at all, or if he just happens to have no problems to solve, so he put him under a little pressure. As for the execution, he had a habit of scaring well-to-do officials this way, but without any intention to actually execute them, just to shock them out of their complacent life.
Mind I'm not excusing Matthias as a king (he was a pretty merciless tyrant IRL), but as a folklore character, he's basically a trickster who punishes nobles and officials for being too content to care for the little man.

It's the mayor's duty to help the villagers with their problems. So if the mayor writes on his front door that he has no problems at all, that either means he's negligent in his duty, or his village is a utopia. Three guesses which is more likely.

There’s another as weird or weirder in which some guy (a shepherd?) makes bets or something with a princess and makes her show him her legs, then her privates, then her boobs, and he tells the king where all her birthmarks are in response to some sort of challenge and so he marries her

I was sure that the girl would have to dress in boys clothes, since the king said not to where a dress, and since she could not walk or ride to the palace she would have someone carry her.
I think there is another version elsewhere in Europe where it is told that way. As it is, I will make note of your suggestion when I tell this tale.

In Hungarian they use the word "ruha" which means clothing in general, not dress.
In the Hungarian original of this animation it's clothes not a dress
You see she could have just worn pants but she was so extra that she decided not to
In the story's original language it says that she should not wear any clothing but in this translation it the sentence was changed so it said she couldn't go in a dress.
There is one version of this story where she wrapped herself in a fishing net. Not clothed but not naked. Brilliant!
@Skeptics we love you anyway I agree that this ending is a bit weird, but I guess it could either be due to either a translation error or version. As someone who isn't Hungarian and has only seen a few versions of this tale I can't say for certain...

We are a product of the current world, not from many hundreds of years ago when these stories were told to everyone. Back then, they listened and understood the lessons it taught. Today, we can’t get past simple concepts with out being offended or ridiculing it.

King Matthias (Mátyás király) was an actual historical figure in the 15th century. He died without an heir (his only child was an illegitimate son), but he lived on in folk tales als 'Matthias, the just king'.
The raven was the bird on his crest (a fact everyone in Hungary is familiar with).

Mongolia has a similar folk tale where a shepherd’s clever daughter solves the king’s riddles. One major difference is that the king in the Mongolian tale is single, and he’s so fascinated by the girl’s wits that he marries her.

@@marcomartins3563 I think the OP is! I lived in Mongolia as a kid (my parents taught journalism) and I recognize her name as Mongolian. In her profile pic, she's also wearing the traditional Mongolian headdress for married women--it's so gorgeous!
Lot of these folk tales have common origin and pretty universal across Eurasia.
We in Serbia have a similar one as well, starting with the riddles, and the King marries the girl, who made him sign a contract that she could bring what she most desired with her when the King gets fed up with her and kicks her out. When he does so, she drugged him and brought her with him, showing him the contract he signed. They both later returned to the castle.

In the Hungarian language "ruha" means dress but it also means clothes, it's just a matter of translation

At the very least, she could have kept her bloomers on as well as her bras! Such a move *would* satisfy the requirement of being neither clothed nor naked.
God I wish I had that much confidence in myself to come up to a king like that. This is such a cool story. The girl was awarded for being clever rather than beautiful and it felt kind of powerful when she finally presented herself to the king.
I know why she wore a bra. As a large breasted woman myself, going riding or jogging without one is rather painful! Things pull and get in the way.
As a woman whose has a large chest and is taking the steps to a breast reduction. I HATE bras; I try my best not to wear them when I can; even going through heat strokes just to wear a tighter shirt under a looser shirt (which works well with making my boobs stay in place and look appropriate to the public, especially since I work). I don't run or jog much though due to the damage and stiffness of my back as well as my hips due to getting my chest young (20 years old and I have the worst arguments with stairs...my worst enemy). The bra actually causes more pain as it lifts up my chest from it's resting position causing the jiggle to be more painfull, the underwire as well as bands/straps dig in causing bloodied welts and rashes, and I can't find a bra for less than $60 each that I even find decent (I don't lots of money, plus I'm helping out with bills for my disabled parents). So, I mostly go braless, I sleep on my side and my stomach, and do many things most people with big boobs dread...because they feel amazing to me though the chest reduction would feel best...get what you can get for the time being I guess.

In Hungary, it was custom to wear as many skirts as you could afford at once, for it signified wealth.

It's certainly sensible. When the king is off fighting wars or such, who is going to be more useful as a ruler in their stead, a princess who is pretty or one who is smart?
No to mention that, if she ISN'T extremely pretty, they'll be less other people trying to bed her, and a better chance that any future offspring of the union are actually YOURS. Like Jimmy Soul (or the calypso song he got it from) says "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife."
I wonder if the queen was jealous her lover married the mayors daughter. Maybe the king did this on purpose!!
Her lover either has wandering eyes, fears the king, or he has never loved her at all. Maybe she was harassing him in her husband's absence.

@@lime__time They are not all purely Hungarian. Many slavic folk tales have been taken from//have taken ideas and elements from Hungarian stories. Since Hungary is close to many slavic countries it has mixture of different these countries' stories. I know because some of these folk tales are very similar to the Polish ones I was told as a child.

however these are mostly mixed up "eastern and german" folk tales with our own versions
I read a very similar story in a book of russian fairy tales when I was young, though in it the riddles were different, and the girl wrapped herself in a fishnet and rode a hare to meet the king.
Yeah this is a common fairy tale. There's one called 'Clever Catherine' that I think comes from brothers grimm. She also wraps herself in fishnet and rides a sled. Later she and the king marry but they get into a fight. He tells her to leave but take the thing most precious to her. So she drugs the king and takes him home.

In russia we have similar tale. The first two riddles are different but the third is the same except it goes 'not riding a horse'. And the russian girl went to the Tsar wearing fishnet and riding a hare
I saw a dramatization of a fairy tale with the last riddle in it. I can't remember the riding part but I think she had a horse drag her riding on a kind of dragged cot. (pallet) (Didn't walk, didn't ride the horse and no carriage) She dressed in a net and brought him a bird
That is a Russian fairytale. The girl's father was a farmer, not a Mayer, the first two tasks were different. Plus she married the king and there was a story of their near divorce. 😃 but you are right, the third task is the same, thought a solution to it was different. And it's pretty strange no matter which version.

Umm... did they really try to wrap this up as a "happily ever after" moment?? She outwits a very childish and petty king but at the end she shows up at the castle on the back of a billy goat with her peach exposed just to receive a bag of money and some random guy (there was no mention of a Prince). Besides she was living her best carefree and worry free life with her papa before this messy king came along.

While we find it strange with all the nakedness in this story, we also have to understand that this was made for Europeans who hav a different sense of what nakedness means. A friend of mine to me that Europeans are not afraid of their sexuality and nakedness. They are more open about it there.

The previous King, Ladislaus V, imprisoned him and his older brother. After Ladislaus killed Matthais's older brother, his uncle raised a rebellion and installed Matthias on the throne.
The story I read said the girl covered herself with fishermen nets, so she was naked but covered, and sat on a harness behind an ox, so she didn´t walk.

No, the whole point of it is that she was not to wear clothes (it was translated incorrectly it's ment to be clothes in general not a dress)

If you can't tell your kids a harmless story like this, how will you tell them about child molesters and what to know about those people so they know when they are being touched a way they should have not been touched? etc, etc...
I could say even more examples but I don't really care, raise your kids the way you wan to, hopefully they will be smart anyways and learn from other sources the topics they need to have less trouble in the real world.

Ya know, these stories of King Matthias set up that he's a kind and brilliant ruler that is willing to dirty his own hands to better understand and relate to his people but that's never really what we are shown. Matthias comes off more as a sadistic troll in these stories, finding good and happy people and playing cruel jokes on them.
The point is lost in translation a bit. The mayor is supposed to help the villagers with their problems, so if the mayor boasts on his front door that he has no problems what-so-ever it indicates that either:
A) his village is a freaking utopia, where everyone is happy
or
B) he's not doing his job properly.
I think it's obvious which one is more probable.

This king resemble to king Matthias Corvinus of hungary the son of john hunyadi. He had folktales saying he wandered in disguise throughout his realm to deliver justice to his subjects.

This reminds me of Clever Manka! It was one of my favorite stories growing up. And there's a live action German fairytale movie called the Prince and the Riddle which has a similar plot too

Yeah, a beast eating a grandmother and child, having it's stomach cut open to rescue them, putting stones in it and sewing him up, so he doesn't realise, and then letting him drown, pulled underwater by the weight of the stones. The third riddle reminded me of Ragnar Lothbrok's saga (the Eddas one, not Vikings series) where he told Aslaug yo introduce herself more or less like that

My favorite version is where a farmer gives the king a golden mortar (but not the pestle), so the king imprisons him. The farmer bemoans not listening to his clever daughter. So the king gives her these challenges. When she arrives at the palace, he marries her.
They have a dispute. And the king is angry she helped him look like a fool. So he tells her to leave. She asks to take the one thing she values above all else in the palace. He agrees. And then wakes up in her farmer fathers house (she drugged him), where she explains that she values her husband above all else.

I love this one it is so quirky in it's own European way. I am sure the part where she flips up her dress whatever it is that is being said doesn't translate well into English there are saying that may be profound but if the explanation isn't given it means nothing. Remember the Archer episode where he is the kind of the pirates and he keeps saying things the Pirates don't get.

MELT UP Well, I’m not sure about the “showing her butt” part, but you don’t need plastic surgery to grow bosoms, only time from an child into an adolescent, as that’s the time they become larger. What she meant by 'she grew them herself' is from child to adulthood, her body changed and grew (most notably, her chest). So she grew up and so did her bobs, but her vegane didnt. Well, yknow what i mean haha. They dont really grow in size as notably as chests do bruh

Another weird one, but once more pretty enjoyable. These mini cartoons are pretty well made, good stuff guys. Btw the king's riddle's were complete trash to begin with, but hilarious nonetheless.

Like she said, patches are always sewn onto the inside of the clothes, not the outside. So she showed the inside of her skirt. Showing her buttocks was just the animation team being cheeky. Pun intended.
She was showing him the inside of her dress since you need to turn anyting inside out to fix it and also she was mocking him. He gets up to punish her for being cheeky but he's too old to catch her now and she vanishes.
As a father who knew her closely and seen her bathed, having her diaper and clothing changed and spanked her it's nothing he hasn't seen before.
Hungarian folk tales is so traumatic.
