      there were almost 100 dogs during the week... it was crazy but it was boar hunting week in the Francis Marion Forest and they come every year! I was surprised that they left some of the dogs when they went hunting .. so we didn't miss out on the barking during the night we had it during the day too!!

    My dog andd I always watch your videos together. Today I'm watching alone. She passed away 5 hrs ago trying to get her to the Vet to put her down as it was clear it was time. We travel like you and Bella. Still 1200 miles to get home. Not sure I can even drive. Not sure I want to go home.😢😢
    I hope it never happens to you and Bella. To be in a strange town, confused, in rush our traffic with your best friend in the passenger seat. Dying and begging you to pull over and absolutely no place and the vet waiting on you to get there. She went down and took her last breathe as we pulled into the vet. 😭 I put my hand on her and told her I loved her as she took her last two breaths. Sorry. I have no one to tell. 😔

We have never stayed at Francis Marion NF and we live in SC, I guess because it's close (about an hour away) and on the East Coast I didn't think about boondocking being available there. We are still on the west coast but heading that way in a week and a half, it will be good to get home after a year out this time around.

      Seems to be "the solar curse". Once people dump thousands into solar they become allergic to RV parks. Yes solar is great for the times you have to dry camp, but I could never be a dry/free camp maximalist. The free areas attract all the sketchy people like those dog owners. No thanks!!

    Waiting until after sunset to break camp and go in search of another camp: Rookie move. Free sites big enough for RV's and school busses are known to everyone through the where to camp apps and are places to expect: Loud drunks, screaming fights, dangerous looking people that give you the heebee jeebies, people running loud generators, religious nuts blaring religious music or preaching over their loudspeakers, party people blaring rap or whatever noise passes for popular music or those going camp to camp with their well worn "can you spare some cash, food or anything of value" routine (while checking out what looks easy and profitable to steal). If the place is a garbage dump then that means bad stuff goes down there and the sketch people if not there probably arrive after dark. The moment something really sketchy shows up (like 12 loud dogs or anything on my list) that is the time to move on to a backup site while there is still light to get there and find parking. And a boondocker never knows when the knock will come so before arrival there needs to be a nearby backup site and a farther away backup site in case gun shooting drunks show up after sundown or a ranger alerts you to a forest fire. Turning the key and driving is an ordinary everyday part of responsible boondocking.

    • @danthesquirrel
      @danthesquirrel 3 месяца назад

      When I am driving, hiking or camping I am always good about knowing when sunset is and how long my travel times are so that I don't get caught traveling after dark (which has happened a few times in life and it was always horrible). There are always hazards like tree branches that were too low or rocks by the side of the road that are hard to see in pitch black. I don't have a van yet but I plan on a Promaster cargo van and they are not the most offroad type of vehicle and potholes, ruts or wet spots I could sink into are much harder to see at night. With more and more people doing van life and the number of spots to camp not increasing avoiding terrible neighbors is just going to get harder.@@DavesRVLife

    Might be because it is SC... I spent a night in Sumter NF in SC. It was a nice camp, clean, toilets, water. It was short off the road and only 4 miles from the expressway. It was quiet.
    But... there was a guy and his lady in the first camp spot. They had a giant Rottweiler tied up. I had my dog so I steared clear. They were quiet, but gave me the creeps. My "Spidey Sence" went off the minute I saw them. They screamed DRUG DEALERS.
    The dude drove his car to the state hwy and parked there at least three times. I know because I drove out and to the town up the road. I Think it was Marion SC. He was parked at the edge of the highway. He was not there to meet his grandmother. He did that a couple more times. He was not gone long. Pretty sure he was meeting someone to pass dope to...
