@@kimkochel6754 Count me in with y'all! I'm from Colonial Beach, VA USA. I'm a few months shy of being 60. My one and only prayer and dream would be able to see Johnny Rivers live. Listening to the songs from Whiskey A GO-GO did it for me! I always wanted to be one of those girls you could hear in the back ground on the recordings. Always loved this song and lyrics, [girl it's hard to find nice things on the poor side of town], and always had an admiration for the very talented Rivers. Never knew he was of Italian descent, as I am partly, as well as Irish descent. He was [is?] a musical genius. I was 18 when this song came out and met my wife in 1966 ? And still remembering all those great songs of the 60s boy do I miss those years ? And johnny belongs in the Hall of fame.
Like many others have noted, the entrancing backup female vocals are something special on their own. They perfectly complement Johnny’s one-of-a-kind voice. The soaring flute or piccolo reminds me so much of the orchestration in Glen Campbell’s “by the time I get to Phoenix” - those productions induce a mournfulness I find sadly satisfying. So glad I grew up in the 60s.
