since you mentioned avi's voice sounding like the cello - they did a cover of dancing on my own when avi left the group with just the four of them and the cello and kevin made the cello part sound like what avi would have sang. it's honestly heartbreaking but worth a watch
@@angiepeterson1282 oh God, that one is like my nightmare, I cry everytime watcing it (I stopped watching it, makes me too emotional lol). They all like mourning after Avi... The cello part tears me apart
A fun fact. Scott sings with his hand so much. The director had him hold on to the back of the chair. To keep him still. The layering of voices adds to the pain of the songs climax. To end it with Kevin, was a wonderful touch. Run to you is one of my favorites. I listen to it every day. Simply wonderful. Hope and joy to you and the qofy gang. Pass it on. =^;^=
Wow. You picked two of their prettiest songs to do together. If you want to kick back and just be peaceful and surrounded by beautiful sounds.. these two will do it.
I'm sure this will be mentioned several times as it's a favorite fact about the "Run to You" video. But when they are singing "I'll Run" you'll notice the stuff that's been falling is going upwards instead of down. They actually learned to sing that part backwards so that when they reversed the video to make it look like the stuff is rising it looks like they are singing the words correctly.
Avi's got those low notes, which are great as accents, but I actually prefer to hear him sing in his mid range..that tone! And yes, he often sounds like a cello, or even an organ...he's that darned smooth!
"Run To You" was co-written by Avi and Kevin (mostly by Avi, with his theory/composition training in college, not to mention his natural ability), with arrangement assistance by Ben Bram. Their understanding of the power of dissonance/resolve is striking in this song.
Doesn't matter. Avi did choral music and do remember they had to change the category at ICCA to accomodate what he did in what had been only a beatboxing category to rythmn section. (It is the ring he wears). Kevin was more into instrumental until he joined Pentatonix and became roommates with Avi who first taught him how to sing.
2016 for "Say Something". They actually recorded it during the tour that winds up at the trio's high school. "Run to You" Avi and Kevin wrote. You will notice they both have equal singing parts to the trio in that one.
And now you know why Run to You is my favorite, stunningly beautiful. Still wish you'd do Light in the Hallway, one of those rare songs where Avi is the lead and he is amazing
BTW yes, you can compare the intricate harmonies with HF's Helplessly Hopeless or even How Great Thou Art. I won't say that either is better than the others, they're wonderfully different.
PENTATONIX DANCING ON MY OWN is a really nice video PTX did when they were in between Avi and Matt. Kevin uses his cello to cover for the missing bass. You talked a little in this reaction about using the cello as the bass. Well they actually have done that.
The harmonies in Say Something are absolutely beautiful. Kirstie’s solo was so touching and Avi’s part so heartfelt. Love when they came in with each part starting with Scott. Kevin’s cello, beatboxing and solo at the end was everything. Mitch’s middle harmonies rounded everything out. Always a favorite ❤🎶🌹🌈
"Say Something" - It's a compliment to how well they portay the emotion, but the song is so sad, I can't listen to it often. Your enthusiasm got me through it though, and I'm with you that Kevin just slays me at the end. "Run to You" - So technically beautiful with all those harmonies. I don't blame you for obsessing on them! Thank you for pointing out some things I didn't notice before. Big hugs to QoFy and the QoFy gang!
Your question about Run to You vs. Hopelessly Hurting: They are both beautiful, masterful performances. I give the nod to Pentatonix for this reason: They WROTE IT. Not only that, their phrasing is so stunning and beautiful. Phrasing is one of the things many people don't understand or know how to evaluate. But it really can distinguish between good and great. The all time phrasing master in my opinion: Frank Sinatra. But I'll give the nod for second place to Pentatonix. They pay very VERY close attention to phrasing. And it affects the listener even if they don't understand what it is that they are drawn to in a song.
I love a good phrasing. My favourite singer for that is Amaya Uranga. And her phrasing is impecable. Keep in mind that phrasing while singing in Spanish is particulary difficult because of the caracteristics of the language. Many spanish singers are actually very bad with their phrasing even when they'e considered to be good singers. But this lady is a delight, she nails every sound. She also has an excellent breathing control and pitch. She makes everything sound so smooth and effortless even when she is singing these very long and difficult to pronounce lines. Her voice is not what it used to be, though. She's in her 70s now and cancer has really debilitated her. But she's still better than many others.
So happy you reacted to my favorite Pentatonix song ever "Run To You". No beat boxing, just pure vocal harmonies. The fact that it is an original makes it all the better.
Came across your ptx reactions for the first time tonight and, gosh, was it good. Your love of music and it's beauty shines thru in your appreciation of Ptx and their performance. This was great. Thank you so much.
kevin is a tenor either avi or scott does baritone, when they do the high set me free part avi goes up to tenor in that part. showing once more he is so much more then a bass.
I love it when Scott harmonizes with Kirstie and Mitch harmonizes with the cello at 1:31 and then they switch places with Mitch with Kirstie and Scott with the cello at 1:50
I knew "Run to You" would be just your kind of thing. Each dissonance resolves to a new dissonance, and when a section is repeated, it's often harmonized differently, with new suspensions or chord extensions. And the section where they are split into a trio against a duet -- I'm pleased, though not surprised, that you picked up on that and loved it. This is probably the most successful of their original songs, in the sense that local a cappella groups and choirs, and even amateur instrumental groups, have performed it.
I'll Run to You has veen my all time favorite of theirs. It gave me goosebumps the first time i heard it & still to this day gives me even more goosebumps by listening to it with headphones! Wonderful reaction as always😊❤️
This for a top 5 for me! Love the harmonies, and this and water are my favorite from Kirstin, the emotion she put in the song, she sound sad, and Avi what we could say about him that you dont know, he put also a lot of emotion, well all of them....love the arrangement
What an interesting observation. I get tired of the comparisons, usually because people always want to define who is the better singer (why does there have to be a "winner" here?) by who can go the lowest. What complete BS. You can love a glass of champagne, then other times you are in the mood for a deep rich ale. Same with singers like Avi and Tim. No need to pick a favorite, you can enjoy each as your mood dictates.
@@QofyReacts Actually, I wasn't referring to anything you said. I"m talking about the tiresome online/social media ongoing "battle" between fan bases that insists that one is better than the other., that there has to be a "winner" so to speak. I liked Dora's take that they are both beautiful voices, just different. Thus my analogy that one can love two different things -very different things-without being forced to make one choice. Loved her bassoon/tuba analogy. My own was champagne/rich ale. But the point is the same. Sorry I didn't make clear that I wasn't reacting to your particular question, but to Dora's insightful observation.
So good! I love Run to You, it’s been on one of my most frequent playlists for what seems like forever, and I thought I knew it in and out and sideways and backwards. Yet I had to replay those baritone sections over and over again to hear what you heard from the very beginning. It’s like falling in love with the song all over again from the beginning. Also, cello is my favorite non-human instrument, so Avi harmonizing with Kevin’s cello in Say Something gives me life (same thing with Matt in Perfect).
Love love loved your reaction. Feel free to point out the baritone any time you hear it bc I can't really hear it I'm ashamed to Admit. I think Scott doesn't get enough credit so I'm glad you point it out. I really thought your eyes were going to roll back in your head towards the end!! I loved it.
I really like your reactions. You talk about their amazing harmonies and when they harmonize in different ways, you catch it and acknowledge it. Thank you!
I found an hour long loop of this song and I just cleaned up around the house while blasting it in my AirPods and singing along (didn’t bother me cause I couldn’t hear how badly I sounded) my family probably didn’t appreciate it, but I’m mom.
it's weird seeing you smile during Run to You because these beautiful harmonies are giving you an eargasm while I'm bawling because I can't hear this song without crying
I'm so glad you did theses songs, especially Run to You. As simple as it seems in comparison to their usual music, just singing no beat boxing, it is still my all time favorite Pentatonix song. You know keeping the harmonies that tight is hard. I would choose that over helplessly hoping, and I'm definitely a Home Fry.
@@QofyReacts It is hard. I think Run to You wins simply because I have loved that song longer. The original version of Helplessly Hoping is good as well. Crosby, Stills, and Nash did it. They were a group that would come together then separate to do other projects, a song or idea would come up they would get back together, sometimes with Neal Young. If you listen one is singing just a hair sooner on the beat giving a beautiful dissonance for the harmonies.
Fantastic Reaction! Run to You is masterful & soulful & PTX knows how to use the silence breaks to draw in your emotions! I’m pretty sure it’s Kevin that sings some of the dissonance at the end. Gripping for sure! Say Something highlights how Kirstin acts out her singing (Broadway is her stage). Also, I read that they were imitating a photograph with set which is why they don’t move at all except Kevin. Come Along is a fun song and Dance of the Sugar a Plum Fairy is next level!
I can't stop smiling I am so happy you did both of these songs, I knew you would love the song Run to You the harmonies, Kirsten and Kevin together in a duet incredible. Your smile and reaction filled my heart and made me smile. SO glad you have this song in your heart and life now.
Run to You is probably one of my most played songs. It is so hauntingly beautiful It was the last song I heard as I arrived at work today, then I listened to your review and it will be the first song when I leave work again.
Just what I needed, two beautiful, soulful songs that I could lose myself in, with the added bonus of your exquisite descriptions of the tight harmonies. I just love that you feel them so intensely and are able to express that. Thank you so, so much.
Run to you is a total experience. There is nothing better than pulling in the driveway right as it comes on and just sitting in the car in the driveway completely zoned into this song.
Musically they are basically magic. Inhuman. Honestly, I haven't figured it out yet. It is unfathomable. I am a music / choir nerd, and I have never heard anything like it. And YES!!!! It is a very big deal. Their talent is unprecidented. I saw them live in 2019 and they are just as awesome in concert. They performed Run to You OFF MIC at the end of the show & it was FLAWLESS!!! I have heard Home Frees cover of Helplessly Hoping (one of my favorite songs ever by Crosby, Stills & Nash who originally wrote & recorded it - but you probably knew that!) & it was GORGEOUS!!! But I have to give the #1 spot to Run to You.
Loved how much you took apart the harmonies - adds so much when a reactor points out something I hadn't noticed too much before - THIS is why I like reactions :-) Thanks!
Honestly, you catch every single amazing detail and point them out. Thank you for that, and I admit, you are the reactor that I most enjoy watching PTX reactions here on RUclips! Run to You is my favorite original by PTX, it is amazing. Great reaction
Pentatonix wanted Say Something to look like a painting come to life and Run To You Is One Of My Favorites. Great reaction. Their first song without Avi in it was Dancing On My Own, u should react to it and Where Are You Now. #StaySafe
They are amazing as always! Run to you is an original of theirs written by Avi and Kevin. In the video when the petals rise up in the air, they had to learn how to sing/say those words backwards so when they filmed it they could rewind it so the petals fly upwards and it still looks like they are singing the words you hear!! Dedicated!!
Say Something is the only version of this song I will ever listen to. Pure talent and just gorgeously done. Avi! OMG I just want to hug him, after I adopt him of course. Run To You just breaks my heart, it just sounds so sad.
Yeah at that particular point the cello was doing the bass. Say Something and Run To You are my fave hard feels tracks from early Pentatonix!!! Thanks for reacting!
Run to you is my favorite still. They released the sheet music for free on the day they released this song. and my friends and I immediately picked it up and sight read it in this staircase in college. man it was powerful
They reallllly cared about their releases in this recording. they finish at the same time. with the consonant at exactly the same time, letting their chord ring in the rests.
Run To You is my favorite original from PTX. It speaks to my soul. Most if not all PTX songs speak to my soul but this one is different. This song helps knit my soul back together, even when I didn't know it was frayed..
Say Something is still probably my favorite cover of theirs. Sans Hallelujah. No layering or looping in the studio. They have always said they would never do anything they can’t perform in public. Of course the cello is a beautiful extra but they don’t hide it. I only got to hear a tiny part of this at my first show. They did a mash up of all the cello songs. I was crushed as I wanted to hear the whole thing. But Run To You was everything too!
Loved this reaction - have subscribed to listen to more PTX! I love your comments and insights to what you are listening to. Very interesting reaction.
Of course Kirstin looks sad! The song is a sad lament about lost love. Kirstin studied musical theater and loves to get into the part when she sings a song. I'm so glad you loved Run To You. It's one of my absolute favorites of all time. The gentle dissonance of the chords throughout this song really made me fall in love with it.
Hey QoFy, hey gang 👋! Looks like you’ve discovered why Pentaholics have a special place in our hearts for Run To You and Say Something. Especially Run To You, it’s hard to beat this song. And to answer your question, Run To You or Helplessly Hoping - I can’t pick!! Don’t do this to me!! Coz I’ve just watched Run To You, I’m veering towards this one, but I know the instant I’ve watched Helplessly Hoping again, I’m gonna say that one. 🤷🏻♀️ the life of a Pentafry, eh?
It's hard to pick a one main favorite from Pentatonix, there's so many excellent songs. These are two of the best and I love what they do to you. You have such a great time. If you want me to choose between this and Home Free's "Helplessly Hoping" I adore them both, but I have long history of loving "Helplessly Hoping" back to my teens when Crosby Stills and Nash sang it.
Kevin invented what he calls cellloboxing, beat boxing while playing the cello at the same time. Again fantastic work by Pentatonix. Nice reaction, thanks.
I say this to every reactor of this one: check out the fan vids of them doing this off mic live. Same for Light in the Hallway. It's next level to see them achieve this without studio engineering.
As always, when Avi (or now, Matt) is singing lead, Scott takes over the bass line. I love this song, we rarely get to hear so much of Kirstie’s beautiful voice.
If I’m right at the climax of the piece, that dissonance is Kevin! He’s singing the 9th! Kev has perfect pitch, so the extensions of the chords are easier for him to do!
I don’t know enough about vocal music to give this a proper term, but at 4:09, I think it’s particularly obvious that Kirstie is singing with 3 men’s voices, and definitely in a good way. The effect is reinforced by the register of the cello. PTX is usually very good at filling the whole range where they’re singing. They just sound like “voices” rather than “men’s voices, and a woman’s voice.” In this particular part, I think there’s more separation between Kirstie and the rest of the band. It’s uncharacteristic and therefore interesting, showcases Kirstie’s lovely voice, and is just beautiful.
I am pretty sure that Avi and Kevin wrote this song, Run to You. Just gorgeous, right? Both of these songs are 2 of my favorites. Oh my gosh, I can't compare those 2 songs. I love both Run to You and Helplessley Hoping (originally by Crosby Stills and Nash). Both are beautiful. Hmmm. First time here.

Loved how much you took apart the harmonies - adds so much when a reactor points out something I hadn't noticed too much before - THIS is why I like reactions :-)
Thanks!
Thank you so much Elizabeth
Honestly, you catch every single amazing detail and point them out. Thank you for that, and I admit, you are the reactor that I most enjoy watching PTX reactions here on RUclips! Run to You is my favorite original by PTX, it is amazing. Great reaction
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that
Pentatonix wanted Say Something to look like a painting come to life and Run To You Is One Of My Favorites.
Great reaction. Their first song without Avi in it was Dancing On My Own,
u should react to it and Where Are You Now.
#StaySafe
Yeah just realised that after with the painting
I will check that out
It's incredible to me that you can pick out the baritone line. I can't hear it even when you sing the notes. Amazing talent and ear you have.
Dedicated!!
Its such a brilliant idea
Say Something is the only version of this song I will ever listen to. Pure talent and just gorgeously done. Avi! OMG I just want to hug him, after I adopt him of course. Run To You just breaks my heart, it just sounds so sad.
Yeah at that particular point the cello was doing the bass. Say Something and Run To You are my fave hard feels tracks from early Pentatonix!!! Thanks for reacting!
You're so welcome and I agree
It was a pleasure watching you react to the two PTX videos. Thanks.
I’m glad you enjoyed it
Run to you is my favorite still.
So awesome
every time Avi sings ... I run out of air ... his voice is .... I melt
It’s amazing
My favorite get feels every time!!!
It’s so good
Terrific reaction!
You reacted to my #1 favorite PTX song: Run to You!!!! Thank you! Xoxo from Texas
You're so welcome
Great double reaction QoFy... always look forward to yours popping up on my notifications !! Cheers...again !!
Jo Sedunary
I appreciate you for this
Say Something is still probably my favorite cover of theirs.
I appreciate you Tania, go ahead and binge watch all the PTX reactions
I’ve gotta say hearing this now, this is pure chorale writing! I wish PTX would do more of this almost homophonic singing; it is sooo moving!
Exactly Joe!!
Hey Catherine !! Haha I like to challenge your music preferences haha
#PentaFry Always
QoFyReacts #PentafriesUnite 😂 😂
Their version of Say Something is by far my favorite. One that will blow your mind is Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, their second grammy win. 😊
Stay tuned for my Christmas reactions
It's hard to pick a one main favorite from Pentatonix, there's so many excellent songs. These are two of the best and I love what they do to you. You have such a great time.
If you want me to choose between this and Home Free's "Helplessly Hoping" I adore them both, but I have long history of loving "Helplessly Hoping" back to my teens when Crosby Stills and Nash sang it.
They’re so good
Excellent reaction to two great videos. Continuing the PTX rabbit hole.
Thank you and stay tuned for more
I think what most of us enjoy is the resolving of the diminished harmonies. It just calls to us.
Julie Walsh
Agreed
Great reactions 🥰
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 So beautiful...
What up bud....Hey Fam
Hey Sean

@@JoSedunary 🙃
@Sean Hi there!
@@michellesimms4824 Hey Michelle
Kevin invented what he calls cellloboxing, beat boxing while playing the cello at the same time. Again fantastic work by Pentatonix. Nice reaction, thanks.
Kevin is awesome!
FIRST Baby!!!!! These are really great songs, but Run to You gives me chills!
First too haha
RTY is so good!!
This was a leap in Kirsties development into a great mezzo soprano.💙🎼🎵
This is probably my favorite songs and this one just nails the dissonance all through this piece of music
There is a recording of them doing this live on stage in concert and it is dead silent through their performance and it is as incredible as the video.
Awesome
#QoFyGang Hey man! Two excellent choices today. Thanks! I pick Pentatonix cause its an original.
Hey Man thank you
How in the world have I not found your channel sooner lol, great reaction man! New sub, can't wait to see other videos!
Hey Sky! Welcome 😃
Please go check out the old videos
Oh no worries there, I already on it lol!!
I say this to every reactor of this one: check out the fan vids of them doing this off mic live. Same for Light in the Hallway. It's next level to see them achieve this without studio engineering.
Stay tuned for them
Love your reaction. You have a new sub
Thanks for subbing!
As always, when Avi (or now, Matt) is singing lead, Scott takes over the bass line. I love this song, we rarely get to hear so much of Kirstie’s beautiful voice.
Susan Peterson
She’s amazing
Avi hit it out of the park with "Run....."
Qofymon..your videos are the best, to me🎶
If I’m right at the climax of the piece, that dissonance is Kevin! He’s singing the 9th! Kev has perfect pitch, so the extensions of the chords are easier for him to do!
Oh that’s interesting
Oooohhhh I'm first for a double reaction!!
And its 2 of my fav songs 🙂
Appreciate you
I'd be curious to know what you would think of White Winter Hymnal. Different, but also the Pentatonix beauty intact.
I can't choose, I love Run to You but helplessly hoping have been a favorite for a long time. I think I prefer too love both.
Hahah they’re both so good
I don’t know enough about vocal music to give this a proper term, but at 4:09, I think it’s particularly obvious that Kirstie is singing with 3 men’s voices, and definitely in a good way.
Interesting point
This doesn’t get enough attention. Amazing!
Agreed
I dont know who I like more in this, Kirstin or Kevin, they were both amazing! Really enjoy your reactions, so keep them coming.
Agreed
I am pretty sure that Avi and Kevin wrote this song, Run to You. Just gorgeous, right? Both of these songs are 2 of my favorites. Oh my gosh, I can't compare those 2 songs. I love both Run to You and Helplessley Hoping (originally by Crosby Stills and Nash). Both are beautiful. Hmmm. First time here.
Deb Houck's Crafty Cottage
Hey Deb great to see you hear and yes I agree tough choice haha
