Kevin on his cello was a great call. I loved how Avi did a duet with the cello...blended so beautifully. Also we hear Avi's gorgeous voice giving us emotional and heart felt passion...Kirsty just knocks this out of the park with her stunning vocals... Nice to see her shine....
This is still my favorite cover PTX has ever done. Each person has a moment to shine but the bus is driven by Kirsty. Avi’s voice crying in pain is believable as is Kirsty’s. We also get to hear Kevin sing, play cello and cello-box. This is the perfect cover!
I LOVE the look on his face as he is listening, it's exactly how I feel too, every time I listen. at the end of the quiet part he looks like he is about to cry. so beautiful.
This is one of my top 3 songs by Pentatonix. They nail this one in a way that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Great reaction, guys. As usual . . .
Kevin was a concert cellist who had played Carnegie Hall by the time he was a teenager. He invented "Cello-Boxing" (beatboxing and playing cello at the same time), and it was this skill that got him the gig with Pentatonix in the first place. He has played the cello in a number of PTX songs. He also gets to show off his tenor voice in a few songs as well. When he first joined the group, he didn't even know he could sing. But when the other members heard him singing, they encouraged to add that to his repertoire. Avi gave him some basic singing lessons, and the rest is history.
There's also some instruments in their cover of "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran and their original song "Thank You". Kevin is honestly probably the most individually talented of the group. He has played the cello at Carnegie Hall, can speak fluent Chinese, was going to be a doctor before Pentatonix, can beatbox and keep 2-3 beats in his head at the same time, etc.
Great reaction! I have so much respect for you posting in a foreign language. I took 3 years of French language in high school almost 40 years ago. I speak English and... English. Thank you for reacting to a great group!
Loved your reaction. This arrangement gets me every time. Kirstin's beautiful singing and the cry in her voice is heartbreaking. Kevin is a beast. Cello-boxing and singing. He is a triple threat. In addition to "perfect," they also use the cello in "Shallow" and piano and cello in "Thank You." Another great example of their talents that will move you is their rendition of "Amazing Grace."
The video was so excellent, the look on all their faces and how they kept so still. You could see and hear the pain! The reason that Scott was holding to the back of the chairs was he sings with their hands so much to keep the 'still' of the video, he had to grip the chairs to keep his hands down. THis told the whole story of a break up and it MADE you feel their pain. BTW, in case someone did not mention, the 'Stick" is called a bow!
What I love about this reaction is that you are not primary English speakers, but music transcends all of that. Music is THE universal language. Thank you for a beautiful reaction!
The reason they have Kevin's cello in here is to cover the bass line as much as anything else freeing up Avi to sing melody. It surprised quite a few reactors when Avi sang in this the same way it always surprises people when Kevin sings. This is the only song with Avi where Pentatonix uses an instrument. There are 2 others but those are with the violinist Lindsey Stirling. The "rythmn section" (Avi and Kevin) also surprise people when they find out about their level of individual accomplishment prior to Pentatonix. Kevin Olusola is a Yale graduate (pre-med). He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, loves classical music, and plays piano, cello, and saxophone. He had performed at Carnegie Hall twice as soloist on the cello and saxophone and had appeared on NPR’s “From The Top” in 2005 ruclips.net/video/cg-WQl3YCVY/видео.html, he also won second place in an international cello competition hosted by Yo-Yo Ma. In 2011, his “Julie-O” RUclips video was featured by CBS, AOL, Huffington Post and the Washington Post, among others. He was named one of 100 “History Makers in the Making” by TheGrio and was chosen by Quincy Jones to represent him in concert at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival alongside Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea. Kevin on the cello and music. ruclips.net/video/gT1IrtAgSiQ/видео.html Avriel (Avi) Kaplan, was a student of classical music and opera deciding between being a choral director or an opera singer when the Pentatonix opportunity came along. He plays guitar, banjitar, mandolin, ukulele, piano, bass and harmonica. He composes, arranges and produces music for choral, a cappella and vocal bands as well as for his own solo work. In 2008 he joined Fermata Nowhere, a group that became the first community college a cappella entrants to win the ICCA. Avi won an award for “Best Rhythm Section.” which the ICCA had changed to allow them to award it to a vocal bass. Avi later joined Singcopation, a jazz ensemble that won the Monterey Jazz Festival Competition in his first year. He had performed at venues worldwide, including New York City's Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. In 2014 he, along with Ben Bram and Rob Dietz, founded the A Cappella Academy in Los Angeles that accepts students from around the world and they have been running it virtually during the pandemic. acappellacademy.org/ Avi Kaplan's solo music is in the Americana/Roots area and is not acapella. He sings and plays guitar and is accompanied by drums, bass and harmonies from the other musicians singing while playing.
Love Two Cellos - saw them in concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles - fantastic performance! I also enjoy Hauser’s solo work even though he’s a bit over the top 😉. This cover of Say Something is my favorite recording of the song for its depth of emotion and soaring vocals.
One of my favorite PTX covers of all time. Just so much passion and emotion. They take us on a beautiful journey with every performance and it’s always interesting and unexpected somehow. Great reaction you guys!
Hi YB :) Every time I listen to them I think that the one who harmonizes those voices and makes the arrangements has a magic ear, he's a GENIUS! big hug to you
That "stick" is called a bow, pronounced like tying a ribbon bow on a present. Avi does a lot of very low notes on other things as well but it's hard to pick it out among the other voices. you notice it if it's not there, though, because that bass kind of puts a floor on the rest of the structure to hold it all up. Kevin also plays a very competent saxophone.
Lovely arrangement. Notice how when Scott comes in toward the end, he sings pizzicato notes (joined after a measure or two by Mitch), echoing the opening notes of the cello. Kirstin's vocals in the last portion are cries of pain. You can see them filming this in one of the tour travelogues indexed under #PTXPERIENCE: they took a break during the tour to film. The colors and their stillness at the beginning were meant to evoke an old painting or photo. ETA: Check out their cover of Shallow, featuring Matt, Kevin with more cello, Kirstin and Scott singing lead duet, and a lovely featured solo by Mitch.
This song is simple yet powerful. Thanks for this nice reaction video👍. You definitely have to see the version of KZ on I Am Singer 2018. Great Big World commented : wow KZ just wow.
Hi, guys. I simply love watching your reactions! They are so meaningful, full of musical observations and passionate and - entertaining! Playing cello with a stick ... also OK. 😁Well, Kevin is multitalent. Not only does he play the cello, also the alto saxophone, and not anywhere, but in Carnegie Hall (Kevin Olusola Live in CH 2005). In addition, he speaks fluent Mandarin, as after a summer of neurobiology research at Yale, he moved to Beijing for his academic year of Chinese study. Of course he continued to improved his celloboxing skills. If you ask me - he is the king. Well, PTX, they're all royals. ☺ This is group of one queen and four kings. Oh yeah, I miss Avi, who is a special case of a bass singer, but as a personality, I like Matt even more. Not only does he have an exceptional voice, he also has an exceptional personality. Keep it up guys, so we can enjoy your reactions for a long time to come. I’m waiting for Amazing Grace, for Little Drummer Boy, for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, for Imagine, for Shallow ... for their Christmas songs (e.g. Mr. Grinch with Matt - exceptional), etc. Really looking forward to. Many greetings from a small country under the Alps. 🤗
I loved your reaction, guys! As other have said below, the stick used to play stringed instruments is called a bow in English, using the same pronunciation you used when describing the arrangement of the strings on the cello.
Oh bless you guys, I couldn't stop smiling when you were talking about Kevin playing the cello with 'the stick' (otherwise known as 'the bow') I just love your reactions and genuine enthusiasm for our beloved PTX. Checked out your cover with Tessa, just beautiful :)
Kevin starts the song playing staccato notes by way of what's called "plucking." The stick is called a bow, and you can actually play two strings at a time.
Great reaction. Thank you. Glad that you liked what they did in this cover. I checked out your cover video for this song and I enjoyed it very much. You have a beautiful voice. So does Tessa. Great visuals also.
Thanks for the reaction! I watched your cover Say Something, just lovely. I really liked the speeding up motion of the camera in some shots, nicely done!
I've read that Kirsten had an eye infection - if you noticed, her hair kind of covered most of her right eye and it never really opened all the way. Maybe that's part of the story about the lighting as well. Another beautiful song and it's fun to have the cello show up once in a while! Always enjoy your thoughts.
Hi guys! Great reaction! I have seen your video, and it was beautiful! This is the first song on my PTX playlist. So pretty! Violinist here to help you out with terminology. Finger picking is called plucking. The stick is called a bow and playing with it is bowing. 😉
Haha thx Jennifer, really glad you enjoyed it (and my video😁) Thx for the terminology, didn’t really know how I was supposed to say it in english😂 I’ll definitely remember!
Recommend their cover of Come Along. It really shows their individual talents. Also recommend Seasons Of Love as televised last 4th of July for a great Kirstin performance. Try their Radioactive, Perfect, and Dancing On My Own for more cello. Try Imagine for Kevin’s singing.
YA'LL need to check out Kevin Olusola's cover of Marian Hills " Down ". You won't be disappointed 😉 Also if you haven't heard PTX do " Shallow " by Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper you're in for a treat.
Not sure if you were aware but when Scott was creating the original lineup of Pentatonix with longtime collaborator Ben Bram, they found Kevin in a RUclips video beatboxing while playing cello. Kevin calls it "cello-boxing". EDITED TO ADD: I really enjoyed your cover of Say Something. Your voice and Tessa's blended very well together.
Great reaction. Anyway, can i request your reaction to superb band from japan? The band is call "Lovebites" They all The Beautiful Queens heavy metal band right now in the earth. They are really really World class musicians. Phenomenal. And they have a lot diehard fans like me😁. The fans called Wolfpack. The song is "Set the world on fire" Hope you check out, and can enjoy it too. Big thanks🙏
Kevin on his cello was a great call. I loved how Avi did a duet with the cello...blended so beautifully. Also we hear Avi's gorgeous voice giving us emotional and heart felt passion...Kirsty just knocks this out of the park with her stunning vocals... Nice to see her shine....
She really felt this song as she’d just found out her fiancé was cheating on her and they broke up😢😢
This is still my favorite cover PTX has ever done. Each person has a moment to shine but the bus is driven by Kirsty. Avi’s voice crying in pain is believable as is Kirsty’s. We also get to hear Kevin sing, play cello and cello-box. This is the perfect cover!

The beat is like a heartbeat throughout! Beautiful.

Avi and Beyoncé’s duet is probably my favourite ever PTX pairing. When Avi is on the double bass, it just sends me to a very specific musical bliss

I took 3 years of French language in high school almost 40 years ago. I speak English and... English.
Thank you for reacting to a great group!
You guys need to do Imagine next Kevin has a bigger solo and its amazing.
Thx for the suggestion Joshua! There first will be another one but at some point I’ll probably do that one too😉
I fully support that!
Or Amazing Grace where he sings beautifully as well!
Loved your reaction. This arrangement gets me every time. Kirstin's beautiful singing and the cry in her voice is heartbreaking. Kevin is a beast. Cello-boxing and singing. He is a triple threat. Kevin's "stick" is a bow. When he plucks the cello strings it's called pizzicato.
I love how the vocal accompaniment sounds like strings throughout, and Kirsten just gets me every time in this one.
That's part of why I love these a cappella groups so much, the whole arrangement of all these instruments sounds unreal with their voices! :D
They are amazing. Thank you
The video was so excellent, the look on all their faces and how they kept so still. You could see and hear the pain! Kevin does beat boxing while playing cello on their cover of RadioActive, awesome cover!
The emotion in this song is so evident in their faces. Thanks for a great reaction guys!
Glad you enjoyed it vicki! I agree!

Cries if pain. Yes. That's the message of this song, and no one captures it she did here.
This song is simple yet powerful. Thanks for this nice reaction video👍. You definitely have to see the version of KZ on I Am Singer 2018. Great Big World commented : wow KZ just wow.
Thunderstruck! It’s gotta be, for his first exposure to 2 Cellos! :-D
Great reaction guys.

Hi 👋🏻 from Canada 🇨🇦
The Feels in this one! Every single time.
Love your guy’s reaction.
P.S. OMG YES you have to do 2 Cellos they are incredible ☺️
I loved your reaction, guys! As other have said below, the stick used to play stringed instruments is called a bow in English, using the same pronunciation you used when describing the arrangement of the strings on the cello.
I just watched you version of Say Something. The vocals and the video were beautiful ❤
Kevin getting to do the form he created Cello-Boxing with "Beyonce" (name of Cello) This is so nice! Thanks !!
Your reaction and Dries on their high and low notes is golden! 😂😍
Oh thx so much for the kind words Jeannie! Haha yeah I can indeed imagine that was pretty funny😂😅
Kevin starts the song playing staccato notes by way of what's called "plucking." The stick is called a bow, and you can actually play two strings at a time.
I clicked out so fast to listen to what you guys did. So beautiful, I loved it musically and visually. Thank you 🙏
I love their version of this song so much.
If I had to choose one thing not to like about this video it would be Scott’s hair. Lol
Looks like this one may have been after their Daft Punk video when he had the white hair?
Great reaction. Thank you. Glad that you liked what they did in this cover. I checked out your cover video for this song and I enjoyed it very much. You have a beautiful voice. So does Tessa. Great visuals also.
Yes thank you for reacting to this ptx version. Next react to Kz Tandingan say something too!🙏🏻
Thx for the suggestion N Syamin! Never heard of that person (or multiple?)
This is truly a beautiful song. I just watched your video again, your voice and Tessa’s are beautiful together and the video is gorgeous.
Thx so much Laurie! I’m so happy that some of you watched my version of it with Tessa!
Thanks for the reaction! I watched your cover Say Something, just lovely. I really liked the speeding up motion of the camera in some shots, nicely done!
With pleasure, Lisa! Thank you so much for the kind words! So glad you also enjoyed our version of it😁👌
Cover of Shallow has Kevin playing cello too
Thx for the info Colleen!😁

Yes; she got her eyebrow pierced and it was really swollen so they hid it with her hair.
Kirstin
Kevin was also doing some beatboxing too.❤❤❤❤
Hi guys! Great reaction! I have seen your video, and it was beautiful! This is the first song on my PTX playlist. So pretty!
Violinist here to help you out with terminology. Finger picking is called plucking. The stick is called a bow and playing with it is bowing. 😉
Yeah, but calling it a stick was just so cute :)

Thx for the terminology, didn’t really know how I was supposed to say it in english😂 I’ll definitely remember!

I just went and watched your video. I see why you are proud of it. Gorgeous!!!

Down cover by Kevin is an absolute MUST see!!!👍👍👍😄
One of my favorite PTX songs, but don't listen to it often cause it makes me cry.
If ya ever see Kirstie give her a hug she went deep for this one,and shes cute wouldn`t hurt.
You should check out Bohemian Rhapsody by Pentatonix
Shame on you for not knowing 2 Cello's! haha Great reactions guys, gonna go check out your cover now.
Excellent guys
Thx Mary! PTX was excellent😉
there's a live version of this that - in my opinion - is better than the recording. I always think they sound whole lot amazing live :)
Kevin is a Classically trained Cellist.
It's called a bow, not a stick.Like when you tie a ribbon into a bow, but not the same thing of course. Great job guys.
The musical term you're looking for is "pizzicato". :-)
Thx for the info Allan! I'll try to remember :p
Please do 2Cellos! Smooth Criminal!
Kevin created cello-boxing.
The stick is called a bow, like a bow and arrow, I guess since they both are wood with a string attached to it. Weird word.
Watch their videos with Lindsey Stirling, violinist extraordinaire, for a little added musical instrument.
If you want to see some raw Kevin talent check out his cover of Down by Marian Hill
The "stick" is called the "bow' in English, but we knew exactly what you meant!
You guys need to check out Mitch Grassi's vocal range, as usual thanks for the great reaction
Thx for the suggestion Jasmine! Probably I’ll do that at some point! Meanwhile there will definitely be some other ones from them😉
Kevin has a great voice check out their new stuff thier original song A little space ft Ateez and butter x dynamite a BTS mashup Kevin sings on both
Oh and now I’m back to hear your reaction to ptx. I want to ask, have you listened to Avi Kaplan’s solo work? His voice is of an angel to me.
Great reaction. Anyway, can i request your reaction to superb band from japan?
The band is call "Lovebites"
They all The Beautiful Queens heavy metal band right now in the earth. They are really really World class musicians. Phenomenal.
And they have a lot diehard fans like me😁. The fans called Wolfpack.
The song is "Set the world on fire"
Hope you check out, and can enjoy it too. Big thanks🙏
Playing the strings on a cello or violin is called bowing...
And just curious, are you as excited as I am that ABBA has a new album?
The "stick" is a bow. It's called bowing. It's not finger picking, that's for banjos, it is pizzicato.
The "stick" is called a bow... Just FYI 🙂
What about the rendition of KZ TANDINGAN singing Say Something in singers2018.
If you react to 2 Cellos, try Wake Me Up/Aviici or Highway To Hell Ft. Steve Vai.
Please react to Marcelito Pomoy's performance of The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Boccelli on Wish Bus. You'll be blown away. Thanks
We all have our personal opinions. Mine is that PTX will NEVER be as good without Avi as they were with him.
Plucking the strings is pizzicato. The stick is a bow. 🙂
LOL stick... it's called a bow.
Bow...
