I personally feel that Kirstie's contribution to PTX is very underrated. Everyone goes on about being 'Mitch slapped' or the range of Scott's voice etc, but Kirstie very seldom gets picked out for special mention. She is VERY underated.
If you notice that Scott usually is always using his hands while singing. They wanted everyone as still as possible to express the sadness. Scott has a death grip on those chairs.
Kevin is super talented. He is 'cello-boxing' in this one i.e. playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time. He was a classical cellist of note before he joined Pentatonix and PTX found him because he was doing cello-boxing on RUclips. They are all incredible. Mitch has my favourite voice of the group but this one showcases Kirstie's voice beautifully.
Yeah, this music video showed great representation of everyone's amazing talent. As a guitarist and former a cappella member of an ASU a cappella group, I taught myself how to play rhythm guitar and beatbox. It's a cool concept once you get it down 😁 I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction!
Kevin has next level talent. You should react to his YT video of his cover of “Down” by Marian Hill. He actually played Saxophone at Carnegie Hall at 16…. Before he became fluent in Mandarin, a renowned cellist, and finished his Pre-Med degree at Yale…
@@kryptonite6991 YES. Kevin's KOver of "Down' is such a master class in music production and demonstrates what is possible when someone is super musically talented.
Kirstin didn't get as many flowers as she deserved in the avi years, but last 3 years she's been getting more than her share to make up for lost time :)
This is one of my all-time favorite Pentatonix videos. Kirstie's voice has the just the right power and emotion to really bring the song to life. Avi's short solo brings it's own emotional impact, and the slow spaced out buildup with Scott, Avi, Mitch, and Kirstie before the big finale really brings things home. I believe this was the first video where Kevin was cello-boxing for the group. He's so talented, it's not really fair to the rest of us!
Kevin also plays the saxophone. Back in the day, he won 2nd place in Yo Yo Ma's cello competition and performed at Carnegie Hall twice. And he can actually sing. He's arguably the most musically gifted in the group. Not to mention that he's a pre-med graduate from Yale. Yeah. GENIUS.
Yeah! There's a lot of talent that goes behind Kevin. I've actually reacted to a few of his solo videos, which you should definitely check out if you haven't seen them already 😊
This song gets me every time. The wail in Kirstin's voice is everything. Just an overall dynamite performance from her. And, as usual, the rest of the group is insanely good.
Kevin studied with Yo Yo Ma! Yes he plays big time!! Avi has that great defending bass line that Kevin plays after his solo on the cello... Great stuff!
I enjoyed your reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Thank you. Kirstin put her musical theater training to work in this one. Her acting ability to convey the pain, frustration, anger, sadness, etc., that a person in that situation would feel really did shine through and her singing was top notch, as always. Just think, a few years later she starred on Broadway. Please check out Kevin's RUclips channel. Everything on it is amazing.
Kevin has played his cello in a number of their videos. He is so incredibly talented. Watching him beat box and play at the same time is mind blowing to me as I can’t imagine how difficult that must be.
As a guitarist and singer, I've taught myself how to play rhythm guitar and beatbox at the same time. It's not easy at first, but everything comes down to rhythm.
Yes, Kevin is an excellent cello player! At the age of twenty, he placed second in a cello competition sponsored by Yo-Yo Ma. That’s second place in 400 submissions, 90% of whom were professional musicians. He also plays sax and keyboard. PLEASE react to his solo music, it’s well worth your time.
Another great Kirsten song is Water, an original. There isn’t a video but there is a live performance PopSpring 2016 which has 3 originals and the evolution of Michael Jackson
*_In response to a comment_* that you made during "Cheerleader," two PTX videos you should watch specifically for the sake of grand cinematography are "The Wizard of Ahhhs" with Todrick Hall and "Radioactive" with Lindsey Stirling.. So close to 10,000 subs! Congrats.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but they wanted there to be very little movement in this video but Scott can't control his hands, so he had to hold on to each chair.
Kevin Olusola is one of the most talented people on planet earth, he invented cello-boxing, he has a great voice, he is multi-lingual, was pre-med when he joined PTX and is basically a musical genius, just watch his K.O. cover of Down, it will knock you out.
I really love how they get into the real feelings of the song. Kirstin has a really powerful expressive voice and she uses it very well in this song. They are truly as good at acting as well as singing, and of course you know Kirstin does have some theatrical training. So, sooo, SOOOOOO good!!!!
This thing is heart-breaking. They’re all in their 30s now and their voices have matured. Check out “Shallow,” either the official video or the live concert from the Hollywood Bowl in 2022. Kirstie smolders.
Love the reaction! Kirstie just breaks my heart in this one. And yes, Kevin is insanely talented. You can check out his version of Down on his channel. As if his musical talents aren’t enough, he graduated pre-med from Yale and he speaks fluent Mandarin. I also wanted to mention their mini-doc Recording Evergreen. It’s a 17-minute look inside the recording studio as they crafted Evergreen, a recent Christmas album that was nominated in the most recent Grammies. It’s fascinating to see how it comes together. Peace from Ohio …
As Anita noted, Kevin is classically trained as a cellist. I'd just like to add that he has performed with the cello in Carnegie Hall. That said, this version of Say Something is so very much better than the original that I truly love it, which I never did with the original.
As one of your Patreon members, you know I am a fan of a cappella. This is one of my favorite PTX covers because the video is so simple it allows their voices to shine (and yes, I like the song). Kevin Olusola is talented. He started the piano at age 4, the cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. While attending Yale, he was one of the principal cellists of the Yale Symphony Orchestra. Check out his RUclips Channel. BTW. Getting close to 10k members and glad to see your Patreon membership growing!
People have been saying a LOT of amazing things about Kevin in the comments 😁 Yeah! We're almost at 10,000! I appreciate you and the rest of my patreon supporters 😊
@@JeffreyHackReacts Heads up: I just found the 2023 PTX Tour dates and they will be at the Talking Stick Resort in Phoenix Sept 9. (I am geeked because they will be in Michigan at Pine Knob Sept 3.)
I love this song - it's full of emotion. Kevin plays cello and saxophone, Scott plays piano and Avi is a guitarist. They are indeed multi talented. If you haven't already done so, please take a look at Avi's solo work. It's very different to PTX. Most people start with 'Change on the Rise', his first solo release.
Thanks for another great reaction. Enjoyed the way you pointed out technical points and that you mentioned something I had noticed and given Kirstie credit for...she looks and sounds tortured with emotion as she sings, as she should in this song! Very well done!
Kevin Olusola "Renegade" showcases his voice and cello playing ability. Everyone else will suggest "Down," and that's great, but Renegade is his own composition is and absolutely masterful.
Kevin is so multi talented. Cello boxing and singing all in the same song. His cello boxing on RUclips is how they discovered him and invited him to join the group for the SingOff
Each of them play the piano. Kevin plays multiple instruments. They are not just pretty faces with beautiful voices, over the years I have grown to really appreciate their talents, individually and as a group. It's not fair to pick out a favorite or two. I have but I won't admit who. :)
Kevin in incredibly talented. You REALLY need to check out his solo cover of 'Down' by Marian Hill. He is also a graduate of Yale Music School, speaks several languages including Mandarin, and is the creator of an entirely new music style called celloboxing, which is what he is demonstrating to perfection in this video. He played Carnage twice, once as a cellist and once as a saxophonist before ever hooking up with PTX. Yo Yo Ma not only knew who Kevin was but told him personally that he had an incredible talent and encouraged him his celloboxing. His original plan for life was to go to medical school and become a medical missionary.
If I am not mistaken, this is one of the last times Avi sang with the group. His having already decided to leave may have influenced a lot of the emotion you hear. The anguish is real.
I like the idea of what you're saying but this was recorded in 2014 and Avi didn't leave until 2017. I think they are just really good at presenting a song as it should be sung.
😉👉👉 Kevin's last name is pronounced Olu-chu-la. This cover is SO AMAZING the arrangement and everybody's part. Especially Kirstie's!! So much emotion!!
A similar vibe, but a little more mature is their performance of Shallow, with Scott and Kirstin on the leads, Kevin cello-boxing, and a brief Mitch vocalization (no lyrics) solo on the bridge. ETA: their after-production/mixing is by Ed Boyer, who specializes in a capella.
Nice reaction--you pointed out the panning of the cello, which had never noticed before, and the echo on the voices when Scott began the buildup. Two pronunciation notes: Kirstin rhymes with Thurston, not Tristan, and Kevin's last name is pronounced like oh LOO sho luh.
AHH! Gotcha! Thank you for those notes. Every time I make a reaction to PTX I can never remember which was to say Kirsten's name. But I'll try to remember for next time 😊
Another incredible cover of this song is by KZ Tandingan (during Singer 2018). She had people in the audience crying. I think it's my absolute hands down favourite cover of this song.
Since you were surprised by Special K playing the cello, you obviously have not checked out his channel. Check out his creation of Down on his channel.
I do PTX reactions every now and then. Unfortunately I won't be reacting to that song because I already listened to it before even starting reactions on this channel. Thanks for your viewership!
I've already subscribed because I've always liked your reactions...so keep up the good work. BUT boy, you paused so many times in this video to say the same thing...there was one time you paused 4 separate times just when Avi was about to sing. I get that you really liked this video (it's terrific), but it takes away from the impact of the song when it's done to an extreme.
Thanks for your feedback Nick. Although I may repeat myself without realizing it, my reaction is just speaking from the heart. Some audiences enjoy it, and other don't, but I appreciate your feedback.
I don't understand why you repeated Kirsten and over and over and over and over but ignored Avi. I love Kirsten and her voice is phenomenal but Avi sounded amazing too.
I wanted to watch and like your videos but you literally pause every few seconds. I didn't even make it half way through before it got so annoying I had to back out. Congratulations to the ones who made it through!
