Today I have only one question for you... What is your favourite style of music that PTX performs? (pop, dance, country, Christmas, R&B, originals ...)
All of them
Hi Barry, enjoyed your review as always! Difficult question regarding what type of music I prefer that Pentatonix performs!!! Can’t give a preference - all of their music is so awesome, I really love everything they sing! If I prefer one type of music over another, with them, I’m going to love all types!👍🤗- From one of your Barry Babes😊
I love their originals :) I think "Sing" is my favorite. Or "Can't Sleep Love" (Maybe all of them)
Yeah! Love the PTX view from the Barry Bus. Love from Uruguay!
I'm not fond of pop music, generally speaking, so...I guess I prefer the "classics"...I think it's where they really, really shine: Hallelujah, Sound of Silence, Imagine. What can I say? I'm old and like the old music, haha. Also, most of their Christmas music is incredible! Mary, Did You Know and Silent Night are probably my favorites of that genre. Then there are also some of their original songs that are wonderful: Standing By, Light in the Hallway.
Barry, Kevin is a world class cello player. He actually played Carnegie Hall as a teenager.
I thought that Kevin played saxophone 🎷 for his Carnegie Hall performance?
Gail, Kevin appeared there twice. His first appearance was on sax.
@@marygraham1959 thanks
It was nice of ptx letting christina aguilera cover this track
😆
ha ha yes, how nice of them.
Absolutely! 👍 💖
I know, right!
Like for real 😃 when i watched the original mv after falling for the ptx version, i was like, ok, but her singing doesn't interprets the meaning - nor her agonizing on top of the piano 😑
"Vulnerable" is the word I use to describe this song, and their performance of it. It's so rare to really be able to hear vulnerability in a song.
Kevin's cello, Beyoncé by name, is like an extension of him. It was actually his celloboxing that attracted Scott to him for PTX.
Yes, Kevin can beat-box WHILE PLAYING THE CELLO. Dear Lord. Of course, that gives them two cellos -- the other is Avi.
Avi is a double bass...
@@super_siri double bass is his primary voice range. A cello is an instrument. An instrument that Avi, a double bass, and Kevin both play. They aren't mutually exclusive.
@@ZebraGirl97 where did you find the info that avi plays the cello? He plays the guitar, I can find no reference to the cello.
The person above was comparing avi's voice to a cello and I was saying to me it compares to a double bass. Thicker deeper...
I'm very aware a cello is an instrument, so is a double bass. A male who sings that low is called a basso profundo, not a double bass.
Avi the guy with the beard has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
Agreed! I particularly like his mid-range, although at either end he's amazing :) I'm 66 yrs old and have never fangirled in my life...until Avi, haha.
@@michelle32855 Such a blessing when that's happening when you're over 50 , LOL !! I'm 58 and feel the same , one day not listening to Avi , is one day not lived !!
@@michelle32855 We have a club of sorts! We Avi-cionados are a breed apart.
@@charlottevan_8 Truth! I'd zone out listening to him sing my grocery list! lol
@@michelle32855 I perfectly understand! I am 61 and tell everyone he is my man crush!
I always think about Avi's voice as "tender". Even in its low is so enveloping and sweet. I don't know, I just adore his tone. I love them all but him and Kevin...aw, these two...
I've always thought of it being like taking the most plush blanket made of the softest velvet and just wrapping yourself in it. Enveloping is definitely a good word for it.
Avi's voice is soothing, like a hot drink that warms you to the core. Avi's voice is like a low rumbling thunder you hear off in the distance telling you a story. Avi's voice is like a soothing balm, a warm hand that reaches in and touches your very soul. That's what Avi's voice is to me.
One of the best descriptions i have heard is that his voice sounds furry and rich.
@@jelinenanashi9466 love it!
Absolutely the most tender thing in existence.
Avi's voice when he sings the lead in this reminds so much of a string instrument, I would have thought it was Kevin on the cello if I wasn't watching the video.
Yes! It's amazing how often that happens in lots of songs...also how he can sound like an organ. Amazing resonance.
Yes, I always think of this song as having a cello duet...
I actually don’t care much for the original version of this song and didn’t listen to the PTX version for a long time. So STUPID of me. I know better 🙃. This is top 5 for me. Brilliant arrangement. Kirstie’s performance is STUNNING.
Really? I’ve always loved this some, but the PTX version was actually the first time I ever heard it.
@@G-grandma_Army The original was fine. I didn’t go crazy over it like many people I know did. The PTX version is on repeat on my playlists. 😊
Its ok, someone was chopping onions over here too.
Avi's voice, Kevin beat boxing while chelloing, (in my world that is a word), the arrangement starting with Scott and they add one voice at a time, the emotion and then Kevin with Beyoncé and ending it....Lord have mercy!!
Barry, you have to be one of the funniest, genuine and charming RUclipsr I have seen☺. I love your reactions and you make me smile so thank you ☺
Lol just noticed this, classic example of mentioning everyone but the lead singer ( kirsty ) don't worry your not alone, it's particularly jarring on their rather be cover
Avi’s voice and the cello have almost the same resonance. It’s gorgeous! They only do a handful of songs with the cello and like you said, it’s a treat when they include it. A different style song with the cello and lindsay sterling’s violin is “papatuoi”. Not sure if i spelled that correctly but it’s a fabulous song and super fun. Love your reactions as always. PTX destroys everything it touches. In a good way.
Isn't it "Papaoutai"? xD But I totally agree!
🌟Such BEAUTIFUL humans blessed with such BEAUTIFUL voices!🌟 We need Barry reacting to PENTATONIX MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK!!👏👏👏
I was prepared not to like this song, but then PTX worked their magic and I loved their version. So glad Kevin got to utilize his cello skills again. Loved seeing your entranced look while you were listening the first time through. PTX simultaneously brought out the extreme sadness of the song while also making it hauntingly beautiful. I also thought both Avi and Kirstie had amazing solos and I also loved that both Scott and Mitch stayed in the background for the whole song. So perfect in every way.
Check out pentatonix amazing grace
The atmospherics are very good. Mesmerized by the emotional exhaustion in Kirsti's face and the cry at the end.
In this one Kristin's voice is captivatingly mesmerizing!! I can't get enough of this song... !!
OMG!! I've recommended this song... Thank you so much!
Please, watch their new video "Amazing Grace". This one feels like heaven, I swear.
I have been in the PTX rabbit hole at least 6 hrs now, crushing on all of them (so easy to get sucked in)
But Avi is the best. His newest stuff is a little dark but worth it. Checked out PTX new video Amazing Grace, featuring their new bass, Matt. It will take you to church and heaven, no lie. I promise it will make you weep. Am putting in my will to be played when I leave this earth.
They always used Avi to do the emotional singing because his voice carries emotion so well. Scott mentions it in the introduction before Avi solos with the song "Standing By". (No official video for that one, tour performances only, so using a live recorded performance is the only way to get it) ruclips.net/video/GyARVE4ijrk/видео.html
Given what happened a couple of years after they did "Say Something" there is another song that the 4 of them did soon after Avi announced with them that he was leaving called "Dancing on My Own" that you should do as well Barry. ruclips.net/video/dyglnLD2joM/видео.html
And even when Scott wrote Light In the Hallway for his little nephew, he said he wrote it with Avi in mind to sing it...for that conveyance of emotion.
It's because he's such a beautifully emotional person, it just flows through every fiber of his being
filmed in landscape, set in portrait mode
Barry, I really hope you noticed Kevin playing cello and beatboxing at the same time.
Please react to their original song Run to You. It's emotional and really beautiful.
Yes, Run to you is amazing.
Run to You was written by Avi, chorus by Kevin according to them. It is the only song where they all get to sing no separate bass or beatboxing.
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 thanks for the info, I have been avoiding it but now I'm going to listen to it . Tysm
It was a vocal hug. Their qualitaciousness (I love that word. lol) of sound is what makes us pentaholics.
I have to agree. If they do a cover of a song that I haven't heard before, I usually look it up and end up liking pentatonix's version better. In a way, having PTX cover your song is kinda like weird al yankovic do a parody, means you made it in the music world.
Barry, you must listen to Amazing Grace!! Talk about a perfect song for Pentatonix.. You will love it!!!
this song makes me cry, they are so emotionally invested too. I can feel it in the voices and their faces are literally desperate. The Cello was a perfect addition to this song. Kevin is so talented.
Kevin plays the cello in 4 of their videos, and the fact that he's celloboxing at the same time is just mind-blowing.
@Ofra Cohen hmm wonder which 2 I've missed? please let me know which 6
I recall the following videos: Dancing On My Own (first video they posted after Avi left), Say Something, Papatoui, Radioactive, Shallow, and Perfect. So 6 videos that I recall. I don't recall of any others.😊
@@dianad3080 oh ok i see which I forgot, I appreciate it
The cello is also in 2 of their new songs that don’t have videos (yet?): Cologne - At Home, & Thank You - We Need a Little Christmas.
I love watching you react - you are so expressive and I can see you go through all the same emotions I feel when I listen to Pentatonix. It's beautiful to see you displaying that.
If you want to see Kirstie really shine, take a look at Shallow. She breaks my heart with the full emotion she can bring to her voice.
Thanks for sharing!!
As a cellist I like the way Kevin plays, he gets a beautiful tone from the instrument.
The cello was one of the reasons that Kevin was recruited into Pentatonix in the first place. The trio (Mitch, Scott, Kirstie) was looking for a couple of additions to their group when they were going on the Sing-Off. They found Kevin's celloboxing videos (beat-boxing while playing cello), and were blown away. He is a first-class, yes even world-class, musician, both on the cello and also on saxophone. This is early enough in Pentatonix's career that Kevin didn't yet sing much, so seeing how they were able to use his voice to such effect here was really beautiful.
Such an emotional message in this song! 😢
First time hearing this from PTX. Beautiful. I've often wondered what they'd sound like w/ instruments other than their voices and w/ only one, the cello, it complimented them on a whole other scale of lovely. Thanks for the review, Barry. Hoping you've gotten great news on your writing. I'm still working on my novel. See ya next time for another great review.
Kevin’s cello is named Beyoncé!!!😄
Oh I wondered what it is, like, I've heard the cello has a name but never was able to find the name itself, thank you.
P.S. as soon as I finished reading your comment I got an ad for adidas Ivy park with Beyoncé 🤣 (unfortunately not the cello)
And his electric one is Mr. Carter! (the one he uses in his solo work mainly) Love it 😍
@@auntieangie6546 ooooohhh! Got it! Thank you! I'm new in the pentaholics world (just few weeks) so it's cool to learn this stuff!
Just so you know, they have also collaborated with Lindsey Sterling, who is a dancing violinist, on a couple of videos. "Radioactive" was the one that I learned about PTX. "Papaoutai" is the only other one I know of with Lindsey Sterling. When Lindsey is in a video, Kevin also plays the Cello.
Oops! I didn't see your comment & told him the same thing, lol. Not copying, I promise! Just a case of great minds thinking alike. 😉
Imagine how the cello would sound in the song radioactive when paired with a violin.
Pentatonix's cover of Radioactive, featuring Lindsey Stirling.
It's awesome
Since Christmas is almost upon us I suggest you to react to "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy", which earned them one of their GRAMMY awards. No words are spoken, only their voices as instruments. Also "Carol Of The Bells" which highlights Mitch's voice (sometimes it's hard to see where he even takes a breath). After you listen to those two any of their Christmas songs are wonderful.
Such a beautiful song! Kirsten sounds amazing. Love Kevin's cello. Great reaction Barry💖
The cello adds a 6th harmony line that is stunning. My favorite part is when they add in the harmonies one by one... Scott, Avi, Mitch, Kirstin, cello. Also, they said it was filmed to look look like a painting or photograph which is why everyone was so still. Really hard for hand-singers like Scott & Mitch!! Scott was seriously gripping the backs of those chairs!
wow! now that you mention it, you can really see Scott's arm twitch a few times as he instinctively moves and stops himself.
You are quickly becoming a favorite reactor of mine. I promise they have happy and energetic songs! Fun fact: Kirstin had an infection in her right eyelid right below where she got her eyebrow pierced. So, to me, it looks like shes been crying with swollen eyes....so appropriate for this song.
I told you they'll crush your heart Barry love. There is just something so powerful in their voices, you can't help it. They are simply amazing. Kevin is so talented. I don't think there is much of anything he can't do. Avi may not arguably be the deepest bass out there, but he has the smoothest and richest bass out there. And I'll fight anyone who disagrees. One of the reasons they are so good is their use of not only their voices but silence as well. So many of their songs are made even more powerful by strategic use of silence. Did you know Kevin's cello is named Beyonce? No joke! He played the cello at Yale. I'm so glad I found you Barry love, it's such a pleasure to get to make this journey with you.
There is such a rabbit hole of outstanding acapella groups out now
I listen to this song on repeat a lot.
I wanted to reach through the camera and give you a hug every time you got misty-eyed. I love your connection to music and how you emote to us in the audience. Thank you for continuing your PTX reactions. I'm so thrilled. I'm excited for you to add Home Free to your platform also. It's an all male a capella group that have the same talent level as PTX. You will love their bass singer, Tim Faust as he is able to go a little lower than Avi. Ring of Fire is one that Avi joins them in singing around a camp fire. It's really good. But I have patience. There's so much PTX you still need to hear. Once again, another lovely reaction!
Sometimes it's hard to say you're hearing the cello or Avi or even Scott at times. The cello is smooth and resonant, and so are the singers. In the few pieces they use it, it's perfect and I'm not complaining it's use.
Fantastic reaction! One thing that I would have liked to hear from you is the fact that Kevin is playing the cello and beat boxing at the same time. That is the equivalent of playing two instruments at once. Strings and percussion. Quite a qualitatious achievement, I believe.
For a very similar vibe but even better, try their cover of "Shallow",
Beautiful song, but so sad so sad😢
Make me think of the tragic Dead of my husband.
I'm sorry, friend. I also have lost my dear husband. I hope you are doing okay.
My condolences. It has been many years since mine died but it is never easy.
@@bluegreenglue6565
thanks for your consideration.
i'm ok! it's a year ago now but some songs just make me remember the long tough year before he died of cancer. I'm sorry for your loss too💕
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 thanks for your consideration sorry for your loss too
@@amazinghibiskus it was years ago, 2004, but I do understand the pain of that loss. It takes a long time until it heals.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this version and I tear up every time. My favorite, and highly underrated, PTX cover.
If I weren’t very happily married I’d totally camp out outside Avi’s house. I have a total music crush on him. 😆
They did some live appearances a few years back with an orchestra backing them up. All the orchestra did was get in the way. But on these few tracks where Kevin plays his cello, the match-up is perfection. Plus, we even got a short vocal solo from him in this one too. Kevin was already a world-class cellist when he discovered his talent for beat boxing. And I really like the songs where Kirstie get the main lead. Her voice is so soothing.
Thank you, Barry, for you reaction! The cover is undeniably gorgeous. I love wathch your reactions. They are always emotional, they touch the soul. Again thank you so much!
Yes, the best group around. Sometimes hard to listen, I cry so much. Really enjoy your reactions.
Love this cover - Avi's voice is so warm and mellow - I just love his tone whenever he does a 'solo' part - like caramel chocolate or something. Kirsty knocks this out of the park and Kevin is amazing on the cello and beatboxing - what else to say - they are just the best.... thank you for your reaction, and here's to many. many more to come! I'll be watching.
Good to see you again Barry! ❤️
I’m relatively new as well and getting familiar with their catalogue. Just listened to Can You Feel The Love Tonight (an intensely beautiful and intricate arrangement) and Light in the Hallway (Lisbon) and...well no words. Please put on your list! 🤗
There's absolutely no point pulling my blanket tighter around me, these full-body chills are frissons, not cold. It's the same with all of their music. Goosebumps racing across every inch of me.
so much emotion can not be contained...and is released by my eyes....
Kirstie looks like she's about to cry in her delivery and it wrenches at my heart every time I watch it! Kevin is classically trained on the cello and when Scott discovered Kevin it was on his channel which he did what he called cello boxing on. It's basically beatboxing while playing the cello and he was doing a very difficult number. That's why they include Kevin's skill with the cello from time to time because that was his first Passion and he is just too good at it to never include it! In concert each member has a number that is their number. They are The Soloist and they get to choose the number that they do for their number. Kevin's number is always the cello with beatboxing and it's always stunning! The fans absolutely love Kevin's cello boxing and I'm so glad that the group as a whole and braces his being able to play his instrument! He named his cello "Beyoncé" by the way. 😉 and fans correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe at the very young age of 10 Kevin played his cello at Carnegie Hall! He is very accomplished on the cello and the warmth from this string instrument is perfect with the deeper emotional Pentatonix numbers. He also brings it for some very upbeat, fast paced songs like "Papatoui" ( they perform it in its native tongue of French) and The Marvelous violinist Lindsay Sterling joins them in that song which is worth a watch! She also joins them in their cover of Imagine Dragon's "Radioactive"! Kevin and Lindsay really get into the music on "Radioactive" , and I highly recommend it too!
Lovely reaction as always! Thank you so much. 😊❤️
Hi Barry. Please check out their original Run to You. It’s 5 part harmony (including Kevin). Then, for a fun break check out another original Sing. It’ fun and stays in your head all day. Or at least that’s what it does for me. As for covers, try Gold. Thanks for the reaction ☮️💟😷

I love Pentatonix.. this has got to be one of my favorite songs. It's just so beautifully done.
This is one of my favorite songs. The original. They did a beautiful job.
Kevin also plays alto saxophone and the piano. And speaks Mandarin. And was Pre Med /Asian Studies at Yale.
All of their voices blend together so beautifully.
Barry, you MUST MUST MUST hear their new release of Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone. It’s so beautiful that I ugly cried. Truly, it has become my favorite PTX song ever.
Barry, when you listen to Pentatonix, your facial expressions mirror my own. This song is very moving. Makes me tear up every time.
I enjoy your reviews. I watch you feeling the same emotions PTX gives me. And your humor sprinkled in is lovely (to use your own words lol). Thank you
Marvelous reaction. They are so passionate here, you can feel the pain ! Love these people. This Pentaholic loves every song they sing. Can't get enough.
Their new Christmas album is stellar and stunning. Do check it out. Thanks.
They make me cry rivers . Truly beautiful.
I like that they use the cello sparingly. It always adds a haunting atmosphere to the song they are singing - exception Thank You.
They play your emotions with the building if their intensity and then they gently put your emotions at rest. They are the greatest. That they sound like they have a full orchestra behind them when it’s all voices.
It feels to me like this song belongs to PTX. They made it theirs!. 💕
This song was what made me fall absolutely in love with PTX. It absolutely crushes me. Kirsten is perfection…Avi’s voice is butter. And I agree, the cello is such a wonderful addition. 💖
Had never heard this song before I heard them do it, I get goosebumps and fight tears every time I hear it. They are always amazing.
You react to the complete person. individualy . I love that you love and appreciate each singer
Thanks Barry
Erica R.
The yearning longing in their voices is just impeccable.
I love their version of this song.
Just beautiful, they are beautiful singers.👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️
Another PTX song that features Kevin celloboxing is their cover of “Shallow”. It features Kirstie’s vocals as well.
Two more treats are songs that have Kevin on the cello plus Lindsey Stirling on violin. Those are an Imagine Dragons cover of “Radioactive” and a Stromae cover of “Papaoutai”, performed in French.
i love how Avi and the cello sing a duet under everything else - sometimes a trio? it sometimes sounds as if Kevin is playing two lines simultaneously . . . i'm a woodwind player, so i don't even know if it's possible.
I found Pentatonix several years ago. They are beyond beautiful. I have yet to hear a poor recording. I just found your channel tonight. And I went in saying okay...what will this guy have to say, is he a "pro". I know NOTHING about music, but there is no way anyone could find fault in their music. I was pleasantly surprised at your reactions. I love how much you show your emotions. Real men do cry!!! Thank you Barry!!!
One of my faves! Thank you for reacting. You're great!
The song was so beautiful. Almost got emotional.
Thank you for your reaction. As a fan from the beginning it is nice to be able to find more people with which to share my joy of Pentatonix. Hybrid Acapella is a new term I have seen to describe an a capella group using an instrument or two as voices in the arrangement. Other songs Pentatonix does like this that come to mind are Radioactive and Papaoutai with cello and violin and Shallow, Dancing in the Dark, and Dancing on My Own with cello. Dancing on my Own was recorded without Avi and before Matt joined and the cello takes the bass part. This song served as a musical goodbye to Avi and a promise to fans that PTX would go on.
😭😭😭you just brought back the tears and heartbreak I had when Dancing On My Own was released!
I can't listen to this without tearing up. The emotion Kirstin pours in comes through so strongly it just gets to me.
I wish I could tell them something, they have the right point of view, We can live together in peace and harmony.
I love it when a song gives you goosebumps. It just hits you right in the heart. So beautifully performed. They blend so well and make the song so emotional.
Barry... do yourself a HUGE favor and give yourself a MASSIVE treat and listen to PTX doing Sounds of Silence!!!
This is my favorite cover of theirs!!! I have been waiting to see you react to this!! I knew you would LOVE the qualitaciousness of this!! I really want you to react to some of their original songs!! Their whole first original CD was incredible!! I think my favorite song off of it is Ain’t Misbehaving only because I feel cheeky when I sing it 😂
The tall blonde guy (Scott) the shorter guy with dark hair (Mitch) and Kirsten have been friends since they were 10 years old!
Love your reactions!
If everyone was as tolerant of people as these young adults, the world be a better place.
This one really touched you. Thank you for sharing.
Love when Kevin plays the cello (and beatboxing) he has some great music on his own YT-channel as well. All their arrangments are so brilliant and their voices suberb and yes, Avi.. phenomenal. I don't listen to much contemporary pop but I usually love the PTX version of all their covers of popsongs. No Christmas for me without PTX singing Mary did you know. Take care!
Hi Barry, its me Karen! I just watched 6 Pentatonix reaction videos of yours back to back and I'm also in tears. I stare right into your eyes as you listen for the first time and I am blown away. You really must see the video of their performances on a a capella competition show , which they won of course. Every performance gets better and better. This was what really launched them to the world. I'll find the link and send it to you. My daughter discovered them on this show and we both fell in love.
Peace my friend and I LOVE your accent !
I really love the way you show how moved by the music you are xx Caroline
Berry is great too, I love his accent, he’s so sweet and very warm inside.👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️
They never disappoint do they. They sing so beautifully.
Unfortunately, this song makes me remember how I couldn't get through the love of my life. We loved each other but just can't live together... fucking cry every time
Interesting they have empty picture frames and they stand still - like a portrait. If you watch, you can see Scott's white knuckle grip on the chair back and see his arm move a few times, he is such a 'hand singer' it is almost impossible for him not to move. What a moving rendition. Avi does such a great job, I wish he would do more upper register stuff, his solo is awesome here.
0:33 Oh PLEASE mean this because there are a SLEW of songs that NO ONE has reacted to yet and I'm DYING for this to be remedied! 😍
Soooo Beautiful ❤
First reaction....Avi doing a duet with the cello love love love....2nd reaction....hand on heart when Avi starts to sing...showing his heart ache....3rd reaction......I'm just a puddle on the floor.........The harmonies are gorgeous and Kirsten has a lead that she deserves....so so emotional. Kevin God bless him playing cello and beat boxing what a legend. Barry loved watching you react to this...your eyes are beautiful ...thanks so much
I love the format!!! I wish all the reactions were done that way, at least all the song reactions. They're absolutely amazing as a group. It's like each person compliments another.
I enjoy so much seeing the emotion that their music brings out of you (me). It’s wonderful.
I love the way the emotion of their voices shows on your face. Great reaction as always!
