Well said. Great review. Ever since Dell’s inception, they always fall short and aren’t totally transparent with their specs. I think their bloated software is also an issue. Big “no” from me.

For the price the Dell G15 5515 it's the best bang for $ in my opinion as I got it for a few hundred $ cheaper than anything else with the same hardware.. if you're lucky enough to live in a region that offers the 165hz screen as an option or by default then it's a great purchase, as it's basically an Alienware M15 R5 without the exhorbident price tag..
I was able to get the premium model (165Hz screen + 3060) for a total of $1149.41 (With tax included) as part of a sale that Dell had early in August, and I can confirm that the model reviewed in the video is basically identical. I have the same enjoyments (Battery life, quiet operation, overall power) and gripes (Arrow keys, BIOS-only settings), and would recommend this overall, especially with a similar sale to the one I got.

Thanks for the review. Yesterday I ordered a G15 with i7-11800H, Nvidia RTX 3060 6gb, 16gb, 1tb ssd, 120hz display. I never play games. I use my computers for Lightroom, Photoshop, Topaz Denoise AI, Sharpen AI, Gigapixel AI (Topaz programs benefit a lot from a good GPU -- Lightroom and Photoshop use the GPU for some things too, but the benefit is less), and just normal usage (email, internet, etc.). I usually have it connected to an external display. My current computer is a 2019 Dell laptop with i7-8565u, Nvidia Geforce MX250 2gb, 32gb, 512gb SSD. So, I hope with the much more powerful GPU and faster CPU that the Topaz programs, in particular, will see a nice speed up in interactive use. I need something reasonably mobile so that is why I don't get a desktop. I have another display at another location I go to sometimes so I don't need to carry my display around, only the laptop. I live in Japan and there are not as many choices as in the U.S. with regards to many different models of computers and configurations. The Dell Japan website has fewer choices and mostly no customization. Prices are usually quite a bit higher here too, but I was able to get this G15 right now while they have discounts going so the price isn't a whole lot higher than in the U.S. Fingers crossed that it works well for my purposes. I will probably change the memory to 32gb later. The Dell Japan website, as I said, allows no customization so I couldn't get 32gb at the time I ordered. I realize that you and most of your viewers are most interested in games so, naturally, you focus a lot on that. There are many people who do photo and video editing too though and it is hard to find information about which computers, GPUs, CPUs, etc. work well with programs such as the Topaz programs. The Topaz programs take 10-20 seconds to update my display when viewing a photo at 100% every time I make a change using my current computer. That is the time using the Nividia GPU. Using the CPU it takes 30-50 seconds. And I just have a 1920x1200 display. People using higher rez displays which show more pixels when at 100% can take a long time even with a higher end GPU than my current MX250. It would be cool if you considered this sort of real world benchmark too.
arigato, loved your comment! would you recommend this laptop for me who does simple video editing? (I just put together multiple 1080p-4k mini videos) just that, nothing more advanced like editing the actual video. BUT important thing is i really need to speed up the exporting time of the vid, thank you!
Got this laptop new on sale for 657$. Even with all the problems shown in this review, I still think it's incredible laptop for the price I paid for it.
Where did you get it at that price? I'm really interested right now since wherever you got it, it could be cheaper to import it at that price than what I get on amazon even with the added taxes.
If Dell improves the display, the I/O on the lower end devices and adds a separate power button, this laptop would be one of the best they've ever made! But at that point it would probably be branded as an Alienware.
Honestly this has been a great laptop, especially for the price point. There have been major issues with advanced optimus turned on though. I'm not sure why that is but it seems like the integrated graphics tends to artifact. Turning it off totally fixes the problem though
No stupid jokes, no cringey bits, just concise and to the point. Thank you 🙏 I bought this laptop for $800 as an open box item. I’m an audio producer running ProTools. My question, if someone could be so kind, if I upgrade the RAM will that help with lag and latency in recording or when plugins get convoluted?
Great video ! Dell was the last company I can think of competing to the legion 5 quite well imo considering the last gen model was quite bad But the the 2021 11th gen Helios has a full 130W 3060 too so interested
Excellent review, I'd like to add that for the RTX 3050 model one of the two USB 2.0 ports has the same speed as USB 3.0 - I don't understand why they did this... As for the cooling system, most laptops gain a thermal boost after upgarding the thermal paste, for this laptop it's going to be difficult, as you pointed out, the heatpipes are under.
The only guy to call out nvidia for their bullshit on the 3050 and 3050ti this year. Props man. The 3050 and 3050ti are worse at launch than the 1050 4gb and 1650 gddr6. At least they didn't run into vram limits AND were cheap at around $700.
@@cameronbosch1213 To be fair, even the 1660ti can run AMD's FSR so yeah, its already better than a 3050ti. And given its got more vram, you can easily max out textures. So we've entered a new level of bad xx50 cards from nvidia. To the point where last gen stuff makes more sense for gaming.
@@siyzerix If I couldn't afford a RTX 3060 and had to choose between an RTX 3050 Ti and GTX anything, I would wait until I could afford the RTX 3060. I can't wait for AMD GPUs to give Nvidia a run for their money!
@@cameronbosch1213 Smart choice mate. I legit swear, people out there buying a legion laptop with a shitty 3050ti over a hp victus with a 3060 and slightly lower cost. Why? ''Build'' or ''Mux switch'' or someother dumbass reason. For fuck's sake a mux switch ain't gonna make a 3050ti faster than a 3060. And a worse build doesn't mean the laptop will die immediately. It can last a long time when you take care of it.
I managed to score this laptop here in Australia 🇦🇺 w/ Ryzen 5600h, RTX3050, 8GB ram, 512GB NVME, 120hz screen & $75 Dell gift voucher (Getting Ram upgrade for it) on Black Friday via eBay Dell Site for $645USD including taxes (~$580USD no taxes) for a Xmas 🎄gift. I’m stoked w/ the purchase!
Okay after 3 months of use my Dell G15 has proved that it is working as good as it was. I live in Delhi where average summer temps can heat a room to 30-35C degree and the laptop still maintained temps under 95C is surprising. By using AC in room or a cooling pad you can easily lock CPU temps under 90C.
With the latest bios update the cooling is improved.. I've never seen it hit 100 degrees.. it stays in the 80s to very low 90s gaming.. and under heavy load 95 is the highest it reaches now.. not the 100.5 as seen in the review... Also my idle temps hover around the 40s 50s now too. *edit warzone gets the cpu up to 99 degrees, though with a cooling pad I've gotten it down to 92*
Can't beat your reviews. Only thing I wish to know, which is edge case, is whether or not any of the laptops you test have firmware that allows MSI Afterburner to adjust the frequency voltage curves. Or is that a given these days?
Normally MSI afterburner isn't restricted to do that cause it's software. For casual gaming it's the only way to tweak (+ throttle stop CPU side). Most special features are only for the "true" gaming series of the different manufacturers.
Love the review! I've got this G15 myself and your review is pretty accurate. It's true that it does run hot with G mode enabled so I suggest stay away from it since it only gives 3-5 fps anyway I'm so happy with the build, looks, screen quality(the 165hz one) and performance so I highly recommend this one! (Also, it's quite cheap compared to competitors)
Huge Plus that Dell has - is availability and non-scalper pricing. Recently was considering buying a gaming laptop in Canada and there is absolutely no place where you can get one for a decent price, newegg is more expensive

For the price you pay during a sale, for the performance you get is excellent value. Legion 5 and pro also has a lot of problems including a whine noise. Dell g15 is excellent in comparison. Also get the 165hz option. Rgb keyboard is not game changer.
Exactly.. I got the Dell G15 Ryzen edition same specs as in the review but with the 130w vbios update.. on sale and it's amazing... The best performance for your $ anywhere and it's a solid laptop that looks nice. The 120hz screen is no issue to me and if it was I'd invest in an external monitor with all the money I saved by getting the Dell on sale
Can i please have a link to a model with 165hz screen? Been trying to look for it and the only thing i could find was one with I7-10870H instead of the amd. Any ideas if it's worth taking the i7 instead of that 165hz screen if i cant find the amd one with 165hz?
@@meiz1795 the 120hz screen isn't that bad if that's all you can get.. even an online review said although the sRGB maybe low, it's calibrated so well that it looks better out of the box than others with better specs... I wouldn't get less then an 8 core CPU
@@mrbrad4637 arent both amd and i7 8 cores? The 165hz one im looking at is actually discounted right now making it cheaper so im wondering if the amd to i7 cpu change will make much performance difference? All the benchmarks im looking at say that amd performs better, but i have no idea how big of a difference will it make in practice
I guess their thermal paste application has gotten a bit better since with G-Mode enabled I hit slightly higher temps on the CPU at 102℉. I really think I need to pick up the cooling pad you are using since it looks like it is super effective with this laptop.
Most models now are coming with a 165Hz screen. The 120Hz screen is the biggest problem in the laptop. If you get the 165Hz version, the only actual problem that remains and can't be fixed is the Alienware control center. It's legitimately one of the top 3 laptops of 2021 for me.
Your reviews are always super helpful. I actually just snagged one of these at $796.55, but it was the 3050ti+i5-10500H model. Did I make a mistake here?
Yes, the 3050 series even the ti is slow, lacks enough vram , A 3060Max-P minimum and you need a 6 to 8 core cpu minimum and then you'll be a happy gamer for the next 3 or 4 years, especially with DLSS .. so the ryzen edition as in this video is the one to go for. As far as making a mistake getting the Dell G15, no, not at all . It's a solid laptop and the screen is fine..
@@juansebastianperez3190 there is many versions of the Dell G15, The Dell G15 5515 with the 5800H and 130w 3060 Max-P is definately worth getting for the right price (20% discount they often have) it's only negative is in some countries (i.e. mine here in Australia) Dell only offers the 120Hz screen as an option - this screen has slow response and relatively poor sRGB, no HDR although... It is almost perfectly calibrated for colour and colour temperature out of the box (it's actually the first screen that I've ever had that came perfectly calibrated out of the box) so I personally think it looks good and that makes up for some of the screens negatives.. if your country offers the 165hz screen with the Dell G15 then get it as that's an awesome screen.. if you are going to use an external monitor or good out of the box calibration is important too you, then get the Dell G15 even with the 120hz screen as it's cheaper than most of the competition, looks great (in my opinion) and in the above mention config, it's basically an Alienware without all the bling (I opened mine to install a larger SSD and replace the RAM with x8 stuff and the motherboard has the alienware logo printed on it - plus the bios and vbios updates work on both the G15 and alienware so the G15 5515 is an Alienware M15 R5 with a different screen and without the exorbitant price tag) Also the Dell G15 works flawlessly with Windows 11 - so if you plan to upgrade to Windows 11 then again get the Dell G15 .. sorry for the long post
I wish you had also mentioned that if you don’t opt for 2 nvmes the second nvme slot doesn’t come with a bracket to mount it. So now I’m stuck from ordering from AliExpress or scavenging through my local market if anyone even knows what I’m talking about. Love from Pakistan

I also bought G15 with RTX 3050(95W)+ Ryzen 5 5600H and I noticed that the idle temps were also very high compared to other gaming laptops. Idk what's with it's thermal system but it's not an issue coz as temps rises the fans cools the temp. Overall performance wise the laptop is a beast even with RTX 3050.
I am on a dilemma. I have my eyes set on buying this dell model with rtx 3050 for about $990, but then I saw a dell g5 with r5 4600h and rx5600m for about $150 more, and some 1660ti laptops with the same chip for $200-250 more. Is the performance difference worth the extra money?, I'm fine with playing on medium setting and most of my games are esports
Good review, thank you for this. I have the 3050 version with 32GB ram and 3TB of storage. Overall Im pretty happy with my machine, all together it cost me about $1000.00

Hey man, I noticed in your previous reviews, namely of Lenovo Legion and Slim 7 you mentioned the sharp front edge. You're one of the rare reviewers to mention that, I have Legion 5 and that edge is driving me crazy. I noticed this one also has a seemgly sharp edge, so it would be good if you could mention all models that have such issues. Second, I know this is a stretch but it would make a big difference to have this data when you show dimensions: the distance from the front edge to the bottom of the bottom-most row of keys. I was doing some research and found that some 14" have a very large distance in this regard which makes them unsuitable for use in a reclined position.
i just listened that u said we can sell old sticks can u tell me who buy them, just for future when i will be changing my lenovo legion 5 pro ram when in future i will buy it.
I disagree completely. Given it's powerful cpu and full power 3060 after the latest VBIOS, I'd say it's way smaller than I expect for a "gaming" laptop. Maybe people have different expectations, but I'm pretty pleased with what the nearly cheapest priced 3060 laptop gets you in terms of performance and weight.
@@TheThatsnasty Agreed, Its been four month since I bought Dell G15 RTX 3060, and it is very powerful, I can play any games in ultra setting without problem. So design doesn't bother me anymore :)
Hi Jarrod, thanks for your very good and detailed reviews. I just ordered a fully specced (tiger lake i7/32gb ram/3060/1tb ssd/360hz display) SE version of this unit in Germany (after much frustration trying and failing to order a Legion 5 or 5 pro with an English keyboard in this region). I don't have access to some of the tech you do like the Spider, but would be happy to answer any specific questions I can about whether the upgrades are worth it when it arrives.
I want to add that my computer arrived, with two features as far as I am aware no reviewer has looked at, the 360hz panel and the SE edition in "obsidian black." This version has an aluminum backplate which gives the laptop a premium look, much better than any review unit I've seen. It dosen't look gamery at all, even less than the legion machines, which to me is 👍. The Dell logo is reflective and the rest of the machine is very dark grey. The exhaust part at the back is black. These colors look good together. The panel looks bright and good to me subjectively, though I don't have a spider or anything like that. It's hard to say if I would have been fine with the 165hz panel.
i just bought the 5511 version with i7-11800H and 165Hz display after watching all of your reviews, thanks fo the help, i hope the better display solves the screen response problem :) btw do you recommend the cooling pad you use ?
Optimus off / G mode on is all I tested with and it did well, not sure what you mean by battery performance mode - the slider in Windows? I don't think it does a whole lot, I just leave it maxed.
It's kinda similar, legion just has one extra type a and c, but also type C charge and slower ethernet. Most laptops have ethernet on the left so out of the way of right hand, at least ones that don't have rear ports so yeah not great that they didn't just stick it on the back

Hello, I’m a bit confused about PWM frequency of the panel. In your wideo there is information that 5515 has got PCM frequency. The same info is in notebookcheck. There is manetioned that the panel number is: BOE092A. The measurement is different though on laptopmedia. There is info that it has got no PCM frequency at all, but the panel numer was: 7XGNJ-156HRA. What’s going on? Are there two different 120 hz panels put in 5515? It’s very important task for me, becouse I’m goting to buy it, but without PCM. How could I be sure that I have 7XGNJ-156HRA? I’m going to buy ryzen 5600 version with rtx 3050.
RAM and screen suppliers seems to vary between region, where i live rtx 3060 versions are always bundled with 165hz, It is shipped with x8 memory manufatured locally (as shown by the stickers) and It comes with the adapter to install 2280 SSDs already inside the laptop.
Hey in India Dell G15 only has 3050/3050ti variant that comes with just 56Wh battery. I saw the base variant minimum pricing around ₹70k(INR)~ 903$(USD). I have a budget from ₹60-70k ~775-900$ so which laptop will you suggest in this range. The general specs I'm getting at 900$ is R5 5600H + RTX 3050. So should I go for Dell G15 or others?
BTW, I would 100% upgrade the screen. In addition to the issues Jarrod brought up, the 120hz screen also uses PWM at a frequency that can cause issues. While most people associate PWM with OLED screens, cheap LCD screens can also use it, although it is preferable that if it is used for the frequency is very high. Which on this screen, it is very low (like 200hz or so). That may contribute to the perceived ghosting Jarrod talked about.
My understanding from reading in forums is that Dell does not include the ssd mounting bracket though for the extra slot. The Dell part number is PXNWV and costs Dell just a few cents. It is tiny. I think you can buy them on Amazon and ebay though for a few dollars. Dell is just stingy for not including it. :-(
I managed to buy one with the 165hz screen refurbished for 1250$ CAD (about 1000$ USD). I ordered 32GB of ram (2x16, x8 chips, 3200Mhz) and the SSD mounting brackets to put in a second 512GB I had in my previous laptop. I'm still waiting on the ram but so far I am very satisfied with my purchase, the screen is incredible and the performance is impressive considering the price. The build quality is also very good, my unit doesn't flex nearly as much as yours especially on the track pad. One thing I have noticed is that the colors are not nearly as good when the laptop is on battery, everything appears to be pale and more white. I'm guessing this has to do with a battery saving feature and I will have to find a way to disable it or maybe I will leave it on if it affects the battery life by a lot. Did you notice this issue with the 120Hz model? Edit: I found the issue, it's a settings called "Vari-Bright" in the Radeon software for the integrated graphics. I wonder how much more battery life you get with this option activated.

That's a great grab
Where did you get it at that price? I'm really interested right now since wherever you got it, it could be cheaper to import it at that price than what I get on amazon even with the added taxes.
@@tincoeani9529 It was one time deal at that particular e-store. They had like 10 of them.
If Dell improves the display, the I/O on the lower end devices and adds a separate power button, this laptop would be one of the best they've ever made! But at that point it would probably be branded as an Alienware.
don't forget about horrible thermals. 100 degrees on the CPU and 86 on the GPU
Great review. Honestly I got this model 3months ago for University work and it's been great so far.

Honestly this has been a great laptop, especially for the price point. There have been major issues with advanced optimus turned on though. I'm not sure why that is but it seems like the integrated graphics tends to artifact. Turning it off totally fixes the problem though

I bought this laptop for $800 as an open box item. I’m an audio producer running ProTools. My question, if someone could be so kind, if I upgrade the RAM will that help with lag and latency in recording or when plugins get convoluted?

Though for a new machine, I wouldn't buy any new machine that didn't have Nvidia DLSS or AMD FXS.
@@cameronbosch1213 To be fair, even the 1660ti can run AMD's FSR so yeah, its already better than a 3050ti. And given its got more vram, you can easily max out textures.

With the latest bios update the cooling is improved..

Most models now are coming with a 165Hz screen. The 120Hz screen is the biggest problem in the laptop. If you get the 165Hz version, the only actual problem that remains and can't be fixed is the Alienware control center. It's legitimately one of the top 3 laptops of 2021 for me.

Check out the IETS GT500 cooling pad. What are your temperatures lookin like? Mine are appauling....
great review thank you!
Great review Jarrod! Do you recommend putting the battery power setting on performance mode for gaming? Or is disabling Optimus enough?
Optimus off / G mode on is all I tested with and it did well, not sure what you mean by battery performance mode - the slider in Windows? I don't think it does a whole lot, I just leave it maxed.
@@JarrodsTech yeah that slider is what I meant. Thanks for the clarification.
The IO on this laptop is just embarrassing compared to any new Legion. And why is Ethernet on the left??
It's kinda similar, legion just has one extra type a and c, but also type C charge and slower ethernet. Most laptops have ethernet on the left so out of the way of right hand, at least ones that don't have rear ports so yeah not great that they didn't just stick it on the back
@@JarrodsTech 2.5Gig Ethernet is a marketing buzzword, totally useless in the real world. Also Legions have four USB-A
Only three, and two of the USB 2.0? (On 3050) what was Dell thinking?
Nice video , i was thinking about getting this pc , but after owning a g3 for almost two years worry about the overheat and thermal throttling that comes with dell Laptops ...
Would upgrading the Dell G15 with more ram void my warranty?
Can someone tell how is the power backup in the 3 cell 56Wr battery version
(Altho i doubt anyone will be seeing this comment now)
Hello, I’m a bit confused about PWM frequency of the panel.
Packing so much relevant info in short videos so consistently is very impressive, even though much of it fits a template.
Will you be reviewing the new Dell G16? It has similar characteristics of the G15 but with a slightly higher refresh rate at 165 hz.
Yeah the screen in mine isn't great for sure
I think you didn´t mention that it comes with an additional slot for another m.2 SSD, which is a kinda cool feature in my opinion.
Hi Jarrod, can you tested the difference between 2x 16GB (x16) vs 2x 8GB (x16) vs 2x 8GB (x8) RAM?
Its better to use NBFC with manually setting and changing power profiles. Saves around 500mb ram and the annoying load time.
3070 vs 3060
On same cpu and chassis
Legion 5 vs legion 5 pro
Pleaseeeee🙏
Only Pro 3060. If you have many 3070
I don't know how, but the cooling looks good and even on idle got ~60C
