Well said. Great review. Ever since Dell’s inception, they always fall short and aren’t totally transparent with their specs. I think their bloated software is also an issue. Big “no” from me.

    • @mrbrad4637
      @mrbrad4637 3 года назад +6

@@josephj6521 There is hardly any bloated software that comes installed on the Dell G15.. it has far less bloat than my last two ASUS ROG and TUF gaming laptops.i purchased.. The Dell G15 5515 with the 5800H and 130w 3060Max-P along with the bios update that enables the mux switch and fixed the thermals is now a perfect gaming laptop for the $ ... It's only negative is the 120hz screens low sRGB and respone time - yet it is the only screen that I've had which came almost perfectly colour and colour temp calibrated out of the box, so that makes up for some of its shortcomings... For the price the Dell G15 5515 it's the best bang for $ in my opinion as I got it for a few hundred $ cheaper than anything else with the same hardware.. if you're lucky enough to live in a region that offers the 165hz screen as an option or by default then it's a great purchase, as it's basically an Alienware M15 R5 without the exhorbident price tag..

I was able to get the premium model (165Hz screen + 3060) for a total of $1149.41 (With tax included) as part of a sale that Dell had early in August, and I can confirm that the model reviewed in the video is basically identical. Thanks for the review. Yesterday I ordered a G15 with i7-11800H, Nvidia RTX 3060 6gb, 16gb, 1tb ssd, 120hz display. I never play games. I use my computers for Lightroom, Photoshop, Topaz Denoise AI, Sharpen AI, Gigapixel AI (Topaz programs benefit a lot from a good GPU -- Lightroom and Photoshop use the GPU for some things too, but the benefit is less), and just normal usage (email, internet, etc.). I usually have it connected to an external display.
My current computer is a 2019 Dell laptop with i7-8565u, Nvidia Geforce MX250 2gb, 32gb, 512gb SSD. So, I hope with the much more powerful GPU and faster CPU that the Topaz programs, in particular, will see a nice speed up in interactive use. I need something reasonably mobile so that is why I don't get a desktop. I have another display at another location I go to sometimes so I don't need to carry my display around, only the laptop. I live in Japan and there are not as many choices as in the U.S. with regards to many different models of computers and configurations. The Dell Japan website has fewer choices and mostly no customization. Prices are usually quite a bit higher here too, but I was able to get this G15 right now while they have discounts going so the price isn't a whole lot higher than in the U.S. Fingers crossed that it works well for my purposes. I will probably change the memory to 32gb later. The Dell Japan website, as I said, allows no customization so I couldn't get 32gb at the time I ordered.
I realize that you and most of your viewers are most interested in games so, naturally, you focus a lot on that. There are many people who do photo and video editing too though and it is hard to find information about which computers, GPUs, CPUs, etc. work well with programs such as the Topaz programs. The Topaz programs take 10-20 seconds to update my display when viewing a photo at 100% every time I make a change using my current computer. That is the time using the Nividia GPU. Using the CPU it takes 30-50 seconds. And I just have a 1920x1200 display. People using higher rez displays which show more pixels when at 100% can take a long time even with a higher end GPU than my current MX250. It would be cool if you considered this sort of real world benchmark too.

arigato, loved your comment! would you recommend this laptop for me who does simple video editing? BUT important thing is i really need to speed up the exporting time of the vid, thank you!

BTW, I would 100% upgrade the screen. In addition to the issues Jarrod brought up, the 120hz screen also uses PWM at a frequency that can cause issues. While most people associate PWM with OLED screens, cheap LCD screens can also use it, although it is preferable that if it is used for the frequency is very high. Which on this screen, it is very low (like 200hz or so). That may contribute to the perceived ghosting Jarrod talked about.

It is almost perfectly calibrated for colour and colour temperature out of the box (it's actually the first screen that I've ever had that came perfectly calibrated out of the box) so I personally think it looks good and that makes up for some of the screens negatives.. if your country offers the 165hz screen with the Dell G15 then get it as that's an awesome screen.. if you are going to use an external monitor or good out of the box calibration is important too you, then get the Dell G15 even with the 120hz screen as it's cheaper than most of the competition, looks great (in my opinion) and in the above mention config, it's basically an Alienware without all the bling (I opened mine to install a larger SSD and replace the RAM with x8 stuff and the motherboard has the alienware logo printed on it - plus the bios and vbios updates work on both the G15 and alienware so the G15 5515 is an Alienware M15 R5 with a different screen and without the exorbitant price tag) Also the Dell G15 works flawlessly with Windows 11 - so if you plan to upgrade to Windows 11 then again get the Dell G15 .. sorry for the long post

With the mux switch and the 130w vbios update it runs like a 90w 3070 and if you swap out the ram for x8 stuff that's another 10+ fps so it actually beats some 3070s in benchmarks. I am confident it will last 4 / 5 years easily as it's build very solid.. the only negatives are the 120hz screen people say isn't that great, but I have no issue with it and find it perfectly fine for what it is and the thermals on the CPU get to to 99 degrees on heavy load - but they are designed to run that hot as I've done plenty of research on the matter.. You're one of the rare reviewers to mention that, I have Legion 5 and that edge is driving me crazy. I noticed this one also has a seemgly sharp edge, so it would be good if you could mention all models that have such issues. Second, I know this is a stretch but it would make a big difference to have this data when you show dimensions: the distance from the front edge to the bottom of the bottom-most row of keys. I was doing some research and found that some 14" have a very large distance in this regard which makes them unsuitable for use in a reclined position.

I have my eyes set on buying this dell model with rtx 3050 for about $990, but then I saw a dell g5 with r5 4600h and rx5600m for about $150 more, and some 1660ti laptops with the same chip for $200-250 more. Is the performance difference worth the extra money?, I'm fine with playing on medium setting and most of my games are esports

56% sRGB is horrendous. I bought an ASUS with 60% (after reading a review where it had a 97% sRGB screen). It looked like visual puke even in games. Can't believe they are still making screens that look this terrible.

Does it really make that much of a difference for general use and not photography etc? As my Dell G15 has the 120hz screen and it looks fine to me.. colour wise it's on the warmer end and looks very similar to the cinema mode my 4k HDR TV has ... It does not look bad at all too me. I was tossing up spending $365 (Aussie $$) more for the 👽 alienware r5 as it has all the same internals basically but with the 165hz screen but realised I need a numpad and at 40 I prefer the more subtle looks of the G series and decided if I'm not happy with the screen at worst it's good enough for gaming on the go and I can buy a decent external gaming monitor with the cash I saved going the G15 over the R5... I am more than happy with it for what it is and will likely get a HDR 1080p gaming monitor down the track

Yeah 56% sRGB is like 10% of Rec.2020 which is the modern standard for HDR measurement. Imagine being able to see only 10% of colors the cinematographers wanted you to see. (not that movies and games are mastered in Rec2020 but they will be soon enough)

Im not sure if Dell has improved now or not but gudging from this video, yeah it still hot. Now im looking towards Legion, saving money now to buy one hopefully.

I paid 1399 cad for mine with the better screen and the rgb keyboard. For that price it's freaking amazing.
Edit. So I played around with the mux switch. And every game I tested saw 20% improvements when optimus was disabled!! Which is amazing!! But I noticed one caveat. I lost freesync. Meaning most of the games also started to stutter. Anyone else have this issue? Or am I crazy? I didn't super notice it in some games. But games like control everytime I used an ability the game would stutter. So idk about everyone else. But I'm keeping optimus on so I can keep freesync . Yeah I loose frames, but I prefer my games to not constantly stutter.
Edit for anyone worried about heat, get the ryzen controller. I dropped the temp to 87 celsius on the cpu with zero performance drop

12:29 this alone shows how incompetent Dell is in terms of thermal control. Random power limits, extremely low performace cooling solutions that makes the system run on thermal limits and for CPU beyond 97°C and so on. It's been like that for years and they've not changed anything.
Honestly, just go for the HP, Acer or MSI options for any kind of gaming computer, or anything else really.
I've owned DELL, Acer Helios 300 and HP laptops so far and DELL is incompetent beyond belief in same spec machines. 130W 3060+ 8 core CPU Dell machine is worse than 6 core+ 100W GPU HP, which isn't even close to thermal throttling in games (~70-75°C GPU, 85°C CPU). I'm not even considering better chassis (base chassis, not screen; HP has wobbly screen), better screen color range and better, exremely responsive and buttery smooth 144Hz display. Although not comparable, it can last up to 10 hours on battery too. My Helios is even better in terms of thermals (80°C average CPU, in silent mode) and has a smooth and resposive 120Hz screen compared to Dell. Battery life could've been better though but not a lot of people buy gaming laptops for battery life I believe. In fact, I'm almost 90% sure that all the thermal and power limitations on Dell is the only reason it can reach such battery life, which is a bit ironic.
Don't do the same mistake as I did, do not buy Dell, ever. You'll only be dissapointed and sad with it until you get something better.

My understanding from reading in forums is that Dell does not include the ssd mounting bracket though for the extra slot. The Dell part number is PXNWV and costs Dell just a few cents. It is tiny. I think you can buy them on Amazon and ebay though for a few dollars. Dell is just stingy for not including it. :-(
