UV resin cures into a solid state nearly instantly! So it doesn't have to sit in a transparent mold for very long! But you do risk putting fingerprints on your piece if you try to remove it too early 4. You can still use lighters/torches to get out the bubbles 5. If you don't have a UV lamp, set your pieces in a sunny windowsill to cure
I've done this with epoxy resin and it works great. Regarding uv resin, you can "overcure" it by exposing it to too much UV light. It essentially becomes more and more brittle the longer you cure it but you could literally leave the light on there for an hour and it would be beyond fine. Some uv resins will yellow with too much exposure
A few tips! (I actually offer custom phone grips in my shop) tape it to a piece of cardboard, it makes it easier to maneuver and design so you’re not touching the pop socket and trying to not get fingerprints in it. Also, use a BBQ lighter to pop the bubbles in the UV Resin before curing it. The cellophane wrapping paper gives an awesome opal look as well. From my knowledge of jewelry making on real opals, to protect and enhance the opal people often use what is called a triplet which usually a dark colored stone(preferably black), the opal in the center, then topped with a clear hard crystal. So if you want to do opal like stuff again you have that knowledge. 🤗😍

I once saw a tutorial for making opal like looking stones with resin. One thing that was done, was using different interference mica powders in the resin. Maybe using those together with the "shaved ice" in the resin on a darker background would make a difference.
I would've loved to see the last blank on top of the painted bought version. Just curious of how it would look. I can definitely see the potential for using resin to customize the grip. Great video as always!
The opal you guys made has more synthetic opal look, where the bought one looks more like the natural stone. I like them both, some sort of hybrid would be too powerful. 😂
I, personally, think the bought one just looks like a piece of colored paper on the holder - no interest, just blah. You could do better just taking a crumpled bit of foil, smooth it out and glue it on the pop socket.
I prefer the sparkling opal pop socket much more it has more of an opalescent look to it than the other one. I think evan and katelyn did an awesome job 🤗
I have that exact opal popsocket. I was also disappointed when it wasn’t shiny. So I mixed some pearlescent pigment into some resin and made a top layer. It’s so nice!!!
Yours definitely looks better then the bought one. It actually shifts colors like an actual opal. I love opals, I have a lot of jewelry that have opals in all colors, white, green, blue, pink, purple, black opals, all beautiful! 😍
I'd love to see a 2.0 series, where you try things again. Yours turned out amazing, and I'd pick that out of the two but I would love to see you try again with more colour. Also any of the flow acrylic videos, I love those!! lol xx
They used UV resin specifically to save time. If they chose to cure it in sunlight, that would defeat the whole point of using UV resin. They would also have a different result in time. They lost in the time parameter anyway, so it doesn't matter that much, but it would still be a drastically different experience to cure UV resin in sunlight. A $10 torch is still $10 - the price of the entire 'buy' version of the project. Of course, it can also be used for other things later, but if you didn't already have one, you still have to buy it for this project, which is kind of the point of calculating pricing when comparing DIY vs Buy. I agree that their lamp choice was completely overkill and uncommon, but since they used UV resin to speed up the process, some sort of lamp or torch was necessary, so they should have factored that into their price calculations. Sure, this is all kind of mostly for fun, for the video, and it's unlikely that anyone is going to use this video as actual guidelines to recreate the project. I just think it'd be hilarious if at some point during their desperate attempts to justify how much they spent on materials, they remembered that they also used 2 really huge and expensive lamps. 😄
shiiiiiiiiiny sparkles are the most eye-catching. But I still prefer the more colors than just shiny alone. I wonder what a resin coat with sparkles coated over the bought popsocket would have been like.
You know that you can do small layers with UV resin, you could have made more vibrant colours under-layer via the mold Katelyn used! Still loved the video! You’re both the sunshine of my RUclips feed! 💖
yooooo i use that same pop socket because my birth stone is opal and i'm obsessed with it cuz it's like a pastel galaxy I love how you made it out of resin and it looks so cool! i found your channel yesterday and it's is amazing keep up the good work i love your videos ❤️❤️❤️

Y’all posted when I was in online class and I was like resist...resist.
I have that exact opal popsocket. I was also disappointed when it wasn’t shiny. So I mixed some pearlescent pigment into some resin and made a top layer. It’s so nice!!!
I love how the first patreon listed was "Katelyn's mom"
Yours definitely looks better then the bought one. It actually shifts colors like an actual opal. I love opals, I have a lot of jewelry that have opals in all colors, white, green, blue, pink, purple, black opals, all beautiful! 😍
_it's ok Evan, you might glow one day._
I'd love to see a 2.0 series, where you try things again. Yours turned out amazing, and I'd pick that out of the two but I would love to see you try again with more colour. Also any of the flow acrylic videos, I love those!! lol xx

You didn't account for the price of the lamps...
Evan and Katelyn are so creative! Their paid sponsorship ads are always the best.
E: I forgot to level it
Kevin’s: of course you did, it’s a tradition
I love their sponsor show
The most creative I've ever seen
shiiiiiiiiiny sparkles are the most eye-catching. But I still prefer the more colors than just shiny alone.
I wonder what a resin coat with sparkles coated over the bought popsocket would have been like.
that would be an interesting thing to test!
@@EvanAndKatelyn more iterations!!!!!!!
You know that you can do small layers with UV resin, you could have made more vibrant colours under-layer via the mold Katelyn used!
Still loved the video! You’re both the sunshine of my RUclips feed! 💖
Evan: time for....
*awkward silence*
Me: resin time do do resin time
yooooo i use that same pop socket because my birth stone is opal and i'm obsessed with it cuz it's like a pastel galaxy I love how you made it out of resin and it looks so cool! i found your channel yesterday and it's is amazing keep up the good work i love your videos ❤️❤️❤️
✨But we buy it anyways✨
The glitter used looks like my nails and honestly it doesn't photograph well but in person... It's gorgeous!
So I appreciate how gorgeous yours looks in person.

Evan & katelyn are the only youtubers I've ever seen that make ads enjoyable to watch. Quit making adds unique 😂
