I love the "it's not that kind of channel" comments. You could cut the wrist at a different angle to get it at the angle you want and add a base plate. You also need to add some LEDs to the hand, it would look even cooler.
When you're making 7 of the item, though, you do benefit from only having to do the silicone mold once. Over time, the cost of the silicone would get spread out over each unit. But if you only need 1 of them and you aren't going to sell them, yeah you're a bit screwed with the silicone mold.
I feel like the resin hand would be *perfect* if they added a gold band that matches the cup around the wrist, either as a full-sized base or just decoration (like the hand is wearing a bracelet). It would help make the color cohesion look a lot more balanced imo! But either way, I kinda dig the weird combo.

I actually really liked this idea. Some suggestions though, if you were to ever try this project again. Instead of trying to directly mold your hand, make a wax cast of your hand first. The kind you make from just dipping your hand in wax. Will slightly take away some of the realism but would smooth out the texture to avoid all those micro bubbles. Also you can make multiple castings so you have multiple chances. Its even a pretty fast process so you don't have to worry about cramping your hand. Then you can save on silicon a ton by using brush on silicone and apply it in thin layers that dry relatively fast. Once you have enough silicon covering it, use a cheap plaster to make a shell. This provides a firm base to keep the silicons shape without over using the silicone. Also to de-mold the initial wax cast, you just have to heat it up and pour it out. I kinda would like to see you try this again, though maybe do it for Halloween. These kind of hand casts could make awesome spooky decorations.
This was hilarious... but uh... you guys do realize that when Alginate is used, you make a plaster cast from the alginate mold and then make a silicone (or whatever material) mold from the plaster cast? obviously this /worked/, but the alginate/plaster casting can help with the bubbles as well as making an easier to work with mold lol.
@@diebosseyyy4904 The alginate and plaster, and a cheaper slower setting silicone that they could have put in the vacuum chamber, might've only just rivaled the cost of the fancy quick-set silicone. But it would have given them a lot more freedom in their work-flow options.

A few years ago, my wife and I made a cast just like this of us holding hands, it was REALLY hard to do as we couldn't make it so we were actually holding hands in the mould, we had to hold hands and then disconnect but keep the exact same shape to our hand when we put it in the mould. Amazingly though, we managed it on the first try and it turned out great! We're not the king and queen of resin though, we just used plaster of pairs and we definitely had a few small bubble issues.
I actually LOVE the DIY. I hate the “buy”. It’s creepy and bland. 😂 The DIY wins all the way for me personally. The price is worth a quality item imo and even if it’s a ghost hand it’s a beautiful one lmao
I low-key love that they repeatedly seek approval from their cat about their DIYs and the cat clearly gives no shits and then they are awkwardly disappointed.
In school we used alginate for the life casts and then filled them with plaster for a positive mold. We use plaster because the alginate will shrink and leak water very quickly and plaster is cheap and cures fast. Greased those plaster bad boys up to make a second negative mold out of either more plaster or silicone. Then pour the final out of silicone or resin depending on the project. It’s a LOT of back and forth but totally worth the end result. Once you have your plaster positive mold you can use a sulfur free clay to make changes such as adding wrinkles, horns, whatever to a face for a mask prosthetic. I’d recommend using a platinum cure silicone such as dragon skin for the final negative mold if you want a resin piece. Platinum cure silicones are strong, stretchy, and can be used many times!!
This is exciting what I was thinking. Like wait this isn't a make a mold and pore process. This is a 42 step process. But maybe only art school only teaches these secrets. For the future, when casting hands/ body parts in a thing other then plaster, typically: 1.you use an alginate mood for your hand 2.use it to make a plaster copy 3.THEN you make a silicone mold of the plaster hand. It will also be less porous and will come out clearer and less ‘bubbly’, and you wouldn’t have to buy the quick mix silicone because the plaster hand can wait as long as you need it to. 4.use material of your choice and get reusable silicone mold for future projects Hope this helps for future projects!
however silicon before it’s solidified is quite a hot liquid which can mess up the surface of the plaster. also the surface of the plaster is never perfectly smooth as they wanted. :)

"Maybe alginate is used for prosthetics?" Me, trained in SFX "That is exactly what it's used for, yes." But yeah, you have to cast in it right away before the water seeps out n mold shrinks. I've only ever cast in stone (hydrocal/ultracal) which potential water seep-age doesn't really interfere with. Fun video! Ya'll are definitely trying out new realms of crafting.
@@louisewoods8817 One could certainly take a stone cast and re-mold it using a more resin friendly material. If there are surface bubbles you could also fix that on the stone cast before re-molding. If the bubbles are all internal, however, I would say the solution would be a pressure pot.
The trials and tribulations with the hand mold is giving flashbacks to the resin keycaps molds. 😂 Both turned out amazing in the end but the struggle was real.
They way Evan flirts with Kate is like they aren't even married and he has a super crush on her Edit: Alright since it might have confused people they ARE married, im saying they flirt like they aren't
Yours is "hands down" the better one! On a side note I recently wanted to make a waffle out of resin using an alginate mould, but after looking into it decided the two wouldn't work together. I went with a metal mould and had my first go with resin! You guys gave me the knowledge and confidence to try it and I see why you love it so much! Mine smelt like marzipan!
So! I hope you didn't toss your alginate. Because y'all could've done this another way! 1. Make alginate hand mold 2. Make plaster hand -can touch up plaster hand if needed. 3. Use plaster hand for silicone molds to be used in resin, and can utilize pressure chamber to remove bubbles. Bam!
Usually you create the negative with alginate, then create a positive with silicone, and then another negative from silicone, and that can be used to pour resin or urethane or whatever you want the replica to be made of.
Guys, body double silicone from smooth on is what you want for life casting. That said, you should do it again with the alginate, you can get slower setting alginate for life casting, and have Katelyn submerge her hand holding the cup. When it sets, she removes her hand carefully leaving the cup inside and then just cast plaster into the void. The plaster will set around the cup and you just peel the alginate off and throw it away. It's cheap enough that it would still cost a few bucks. Then you'd have something akin to ceramic as the end result. Ideally you get a casting that works and you mold it in silicone later so you can make multiples.
As my mom would tell me since i make cosplay and she does sewing, "why pay like $20 for an item when you can spend over $100 worth of materials and make it?" I hate that i relate to this so much XD
“Did he just call me resin?” killed me. I mean, Katelyn *is* the Queen of Resin. The blue hand, you could make a water themed tray for your (guest) bathroom and attach the hand cup to it to hold toothbrushes. A water deity offering a helping hand for your toiletries.
Imagine if they attached a speaker to it and a detector so whenever a guest is in the bathroom the hand just says, "In the bathroom we meet, might you grab a bathroom treat?"
THAT comment had me crying with Laughter.. the look of shock on Katelyns face.. pure gold thankyou for leaving it in the video. also Smoothon make a product called body double which is used exactly for this type of hard resin casting from flexible life casts. Project came out great!

my favorite part of the whole video: Evan and Katelyn: Shaking hands Katelyn: Thought we didn't shake hands until the end Evan: Quickly pulls away and is offended Katelyn: You shook my hand, don't look offended. YoU Did THis!
"You have a limited amount of space in your house and you should save it for what you really like in terms of aesthetics." I think this is an explanation of the mood ring toilet seat and an example of your questionable aesthetic choices (which I (mostly) love).
Oh my gosh. I almost love the borderline-fails more than the ones with clear winners! I was just laughing so hard when you were trying to argue to the viewer why yours was better even though you knew most people wouldn't like it 😂 (And for what it's worth, I love yours! And most things you make... So we clearly have similar aesthetics. ❤) This video was so fun and entertaining, so thank you for that! I'm not sure I've laughed so much with one of your videos since the mood ring toilet seat 😜
I love all of your videos, and have recently watched some of your older videos (videos made about 3 years ago) I always wonder if you still have some of those older projects (such as the self watering planter and the little resin experiments)
When I was younger my late grandfather owned a candle company. One thing we did was build up layers of wax around our hands to create a mold of sorts. Once the mold was complete he would pour “cement” onto it, and then we would have cool figures to paint. He also made practice molds out of rubber and would pour...I don’t know why I can’t think of the word...”cement” into them to make sure they were working... it was fun to paint...
@Amy You missed half the joke. "Alright, it's fully hard. Go ahead and give it a tug off". This was an unfortunate choice of words in quick succession.
Elvis Martinez yeah I know I heard the whole joke, I was just equally amused by Evan scrambling for a better sentence and it still sounding suggestive.
@@facelessdrone They use alginate for teeth impressions. So a dentist knows how to use alginate. So watching people who don’t know how to work with it is amusing.
The amount of times Katelyn has compared their project to gushers.... I’ve been binge watching you guys in quarantine and it’s definitely a theme I’ve noticed lol
I love how original you two are with your videos, and how you bring out the child in me and many other viewers. Thank you both for being there for us! Bring Joob much love!❤
You win the Aesthetics on the basis of a *way* more interesting pose alone. Stability could be improved with a base if necessary, and that could hold some LEDs in there to REALLY lean into the ghost/space god look.
this is the first video i’ve ever seen from these guys but they left a good impression just based on how fun and silly they are AND the fact that they show how long the sponsor segments is!
You could still use alginate for a fast mold of Katelyn's hand, then plaster it and do any fine corrections of bubbles on the plaster before making a silicone mold of that. This method would also allow you to add extra details into the final mold too.
I'm not even that big of a fan of this video in particular, but I keep rewatching evan and katelyn because I love their content and vibes and this is one that I've watched pretty little so I just had to

For the future, when casting hands/ body parts in a thing other then plaster, typically:
1.you use an alginate mood for your hand
2.use it to make a plaster copy
3.THEN you make a silicone mold of the plaster hand. It will also be less porous and will come out clearer and less ‘bubbly’, and you wouldn’t have to buy the quick mix silicone because the plaster hand can wait as long as you need it to.
4.use material of your choice and get reusable silicone mold for future projects
Hope this helps for future projects!
however silicon before it’s solidified is quite a hot liquid which can mess up the surface of the plaster. also the surface of the plaster is never perfectly smooth as they wanted. :)
Came to look for this comment, that's how you to do it
I was coming to recommend this too. I wondered why they didn’t have a multi step process.
This is how the pros do it, never have issues with the plaster

Yeah... he loves you as much as resin 😂
I seriously love this channel! I love how I can still watch your videos with my kids and laugh at the adult humor that my kids have no idea why!

"Maybe alginate is used for prosthetics?"
Me, trained in SFX "That is exactly what it's used for, yes."
But yeah, you have to cast in it right away before the water seeps out n mold shrinks. I've only ever cast in stone (hydrocal/ultracal) which potential water seep-age doesn't really interfere with.
Fun video! Ya'll are definitely trying out new realms of crafting.
Would they then be able to use that stone thing to cast in a more resin friendly material (and fix up bubbles)?
thanks for the tips!
They way Evan flirts with Kate is like they aren't even married and he has a super crush on her

K'eyush The Stunt Dog hey key I love your videos I didn’t know you watched Evan and katelyn
Hey love yer videos!
yet another channel added to my growing list of casually binge watched from oldest to newest video shortly after stumbling upon :)
So! I hope you didn't toss your alginate. Because y'all could've done this another way!
1. Make alginate hand mold
2. Make plaster hand -can touch up plaster hand if needed.
3. Use plaster hand for silicone molds to be used in resin, and can utilize pressure chamber to remove bubbles.
Bam!
I wonder if they had plaster at the house...
Yes! I recall seeing this done on other channels.
I love the bubbles because they are so evenly spaced
"this isnt that kind of channel!" I love how you guys can still be you and know what all the viewers are thinking lol!
Evan’s “dirty mind” trying to talk break downs are hilarious!! Even funnier than sweet Katelyn’s very naughty giggle!
Ooookkkkkk
I like the bubbles. They give the hand a frosted look that's nice!
As my mom would tell me since i make cosplay and she does sewing, "why pay like $20 for an item when you can spend over $100 worth of materials and make it?" I hate that i relate to this so much XD
bahaha your mom speaks true words
“Did he just call me resin?” killed me. I mean, Katelyn *is* the Queen of Resin.
The blue hand, you could make a water themed tray for your (guest) bathroom and attach the hand cup to it to hold toothbrushes. A water deity offering a helping hand for your toiletries.
Imagine if they attached a speaker to it and a detector so whenever a guest is in the bathroom the hand just says, "In the bathroom we meet, might you grab a bathroom treat?"
Haha, thank you. Oooo that would be sweet. All guests would enjoy our non-evil watery deity!
@@eaglefan2569 I'm gonna be honest, I don't think I'd make it to the toilet if I walked in and heard a voice suddenly.
LOL You two... I just cracked up during this whole freaking video. "Just tug on this... " lol
THAT comment had me crying with Laughter.. the look of shock on Katelyns face.. pure gold thankyou for leaving it in the video. also Smoothon make a product called body double which is used exactly for this type of hard resin casting from flexible life casts. Project came out great!
This is nowhere near as bad a Jenna's Hand Soap, so this is fine.

"You have a limited amount of space in your house and you should save it for what you really like in terms of aesthetics." I think this is an explanation of the mood ring toilet seat and an example of your questionable aesthetic choices (which I (mostly) love).
haha!
I personally love the hand. But i would have gone with a purple tinted hand with holo flakes an a black cup
Yeah it was great with the laughs. They are excellent mood lifters😁
Thank you so much!
I love all of your videos, and have recently watched some of your older videos (videos made about 3 years ago) I always wonder if you still have some of those older projects (such as the self watering planter and the little resin experiments)
We do have both of those! Most the stuff we made we still have, though some we don't really use anymore

Evan and Kaitlyn trying to suppress insertion jokes:Not that type of Chanel😅
The alginate’s body part molding instructions have left me with more questions than answers
It's obviously for perfectly molded stools
I really like the DIY one! It looks almost elegant, but vicious. Like the hand of an angered ocean goddess reaching out to sink a ship.
The “cement” could of possibly been porcelain? lol I don’t rlly know
Plaster of Paris?

I also love how Evan reconstructs the sentence to be less suggestive and still used “tug” 😂
...how is tug a bad word?
Rice&beans &rock&roll it’s not bad! But if you’re British, it’s used as slang for wank.
@Amy You missed half the joke.
"Alright, it's fully hard. Go ahead and give it a tug off".
This was an unfortunate choice of words in quick succession.
Elvis Martinez yeah I know I heard the whole joke, I was just equally amused by Evan scrambling for a better sentence and it still sounding suggestive.

ah yes, the reactions of people who are not in the dental field when they are first exposed to alginate

@@facelessdrone exactly
@@facelessdrone They use alginate for teeth impressions. So a dentist knows how to use alginate. So watching people who don’t know how to work with it is amusing.

Evan: mixing the silicone in the cup "that sounds so gross"
Me: "WAP WAP WAP"
I was thinking the same thing
Lol me too
You could still use alginate for a fast mold of Katelyn's hand, then plaster it and do any fine corrections of bubbles on the plaster before making a silicone mold of that. This method would also allow you to add extra details into the final mold too.
You should make “did you level it” merch
Or "I forgot the mold release!"
