A neat thing about the Flamme earrings is Frieren doesn't wear them until joining Himmel. It seems like Frieren decided to wear them so that she can bring Flamme with her to watch as she fulfills her wish of killing the Demon King.

@@fjoergyn it looks like the first season of the anime will cover through chapter 60 of the manga. The manga currently has 127 or so chapters, and chapter 119 would be an excellent stopping point for a second season. It is quite possible we will have a second season soon, but a third season is likely going to be a bit of a wait.

Noting something about Fern from the first episode. She was already practicing mana suppression before meeting Frieren.
"Was finding me difficult even for you? Mr. Heiter often tells me I'm practically invisible. It's a very good thing, isn't it?"
    "It is."
It's true. I can barely detect her mana. Her control over her mana is exceptional. How much has she studied at such a young age?
Maybe it was something she learned pre-Heiter or from Heiter himself.

There is a flashback in the manga where Heiter asks Frieren the details about why and how she hides her mana, and also some basics of being a mage. He was trying to be friendly and know her better, but he convinced her to talk about it by saying maybe he would have a kid who had potential as a mage some day.

are mana suppression and concealment the same thing in this series, mechanically speaking? they very well might be, but sometimes the characters use different terminology related to the actual effect they are going for. for example, this episode talks a lot about suppressing mana so that demons underestimate your strength. in other cases, characters say they are concealing their mana to avoid detection.
i feel like there are some inconsistencies in how the series goes about using these mechanics. for example, frieren has been working on mana suppression for over 1000 years, but she also tends to speak about fern's concealment as if it's something so unique to her. there are several episodes (don't want to spoil anything, either) where Fern seems to have a more unique ability to hide from detection than anyone else, including Frieren. i know fern is ALSO suppressing her mana, and it's possible that is the same as concealing it.

    • @nelg1994

@@bench2346 mana concealment is a rare skill to be good at, but as good as fern is, there is a mage that can detect her, but mana suppresion always comes with instabiltiy that cause good mage to know that you are hiding your strength...fern still not at the level that she can hide strength like frieren...had fern fought aura, aura would have saw that instability.... i gues both are concealing, any good mage can conceal their mana to avoid detection but not all mage capable of concealing their true strength

Suppressing mana is seen as dishonorable in general because it is a representation of your power and skill as a user of magic. In that way, suppressing your mana is sort of like hustling pool. You are pretending to be worse than you are to trick people into situations they otherwise wouldn't get themselves into just so you can beat them. Flamme and Frieren, and now also Fern, are willing to accept being seen as dishonorable by other mages because they're more interested in killing demons. That's why Flamme told Frieren that only they should be the ones going around suppressing their mana and making a mockery of magic.

Cute little detail with the Ear-rings , theyre the same crystal but different attachment (Looks like more of a clip than a pin for frieren) , my theory for that is that Elf ears are extremely sensitive in D&D , and even in Frieren we know this (Its why she gets cold to easily) , so likely too sensitive to pierce

It's mentioned in the manga that while Frieren is deciphering grimoires she can basically put herself into a comatose state to translate it faster. It will likely be mentioned next season, but based on the amount of random adventures Frieren goes on for grimoiries, I wouldn't be surprised if she was almost always deciphering one lol.

Most E on the end of a word in english are unpronounced. But in Germany, ever letter is pronounced. when you see a "a-e-i-o-u" at the end, very most (extreme few exceptions) of the words would be pronounced till the last letter. The best way in this anime is just pronounced like the character do. Japanese are known to have a crush if its about german language :D The same thing is about Umlaut like ä-ö-ü. Just read it ae-oe-ue. Probably this is more difficult for all in the world because its only in the germanic-speak area like Switzerland and Austria too.
A good example for me is, i dont know how to pronounce the letter i correctly in most words in english like "scale of obedience" and "fire". I dont know when i have it to say i like in "fire" or i like in "obedience" xD
The "Cabin in the Woods" get a new definition xD ...
A other small Funfact is, aura dont know about frieren exactly because she was thousand years hiding like Flamme say it to her. She only know frieren after the first fight with the crew and defeating the demon king. Probably a bit more than 80 years.
Sorry for writing a book xD

The mana aura around Frieren when Flamme finds her looks roughly the same as her mana does when Aura specs her out before using the scales. Aura's comments strongly suggest that Frieren would have only been practicing magic for 100-200 years before Flamme found her. That's about what another elf we eventually meet would consider a good amount of time to make a rushed decision, so Frieren is quite the elf baby. I think the swing in the village had been built for her.

Regarding the names and pronounciation - so far the names have all been German words, and the voice artists are pronouncing them more or less like a German would. They all have meanings, of course. Fern for example means distant or far away, Stark is strong, Frieren is to feel cold or to freeze, Himmel is heaven, Heiter is cheerful, and Eisen means iron. Hope that helps a bit.

One of the things that makes episode 10 so great to me is that the buildup and expectations is that there is going to be a flashy fight. Frieren the Slayer, all of Lugner's memories of their past fight with Frieren, the way episode 9 was mostly fighing... You expect a massive battle. What you get isn't that. Instead we are shown a lot about Frieren as a young mage, and it explains that Frieren massively outclasses Aura. It then wraps it up very quickly, enforcing that a 500 year old demon isn't powerful enough for Frieren to even bother confirming that it is dead.
I think episode 10 is amazing, but without the buildup that started in episode 7 it wouldn't have been as good.
I am very glad that you appreciated the experience of watching them together. Allowing the story to flow smoothly is really something.
I also just realized that all of the episodes I consider potentially better have Flamme flashbacks.

To quote my favorite author: promise, prepare and payoff. Some of the payoffs in episode 10 were promised back in episode 2 and prepared several times since. Even better yet, some of the payoff here is actually preparation for later payoff as well. Even better, the mentions of flashier fighting is a promise of things to come. The structure of the storytelling in this show is fanfuckingtastic.

The name pronunciation in this show is actually fascinating to me, because all these names are Germanic, and the katakana is written to adapt the German pronunciation within a Japanese phonetic/syllabic lens.
Stark in German would be read as shtarrk, because in German, S becomes SH when followed by a voiceless consonant (in this case, t), and R sounds are lightly rolled, instead of swallowed like in English.
But on top of that, Japanese phonetics add ghost vowels to their consonant sounds, so it becomes sh(u)-TAR(u)-k(u).
Likewise, Flamme would be pronounced as FLAM-muh, but in Japanese that becomes f(u)-RAM-may.
Anyway, I guess that means that the name pronunciation are a mess to begin with, so don't worry about it and say the names however you're comfortable.

This is why Lugner doesn't mind turning his back to Fern and it's why mid demons like Draht (wire guy) think Frieren is nothing special. It's a huge advantage vs. (most) demons, but there are several severe drawbacks to continuous suppression, which is why even humans don't bother with it. Only someone completely obsessed with killing demons would go to such lengths as Frieren and Flamme. Though it's more of a habit for Frieren at this point. She is not really obsessed anymore.
