My daughter is into this tune today sent her this video love you feel for this song my Emily is obsessed over today me and me wife loved this song but both thought it was pat Benatar😂 hope you’re still enjoying drumming awesome drum cover
Very Nice! Cymbals sound great and how you used them was very tasteful. The fills, timing and all sounded good to me. Good job Mom! Thanks for sharing again.
Great playing and good to see you're still at it! I'm about to give some constructive criticism, so if it is unwelcome then please disregard it! Your swung eighth note feel is inconsistent and tends to be straighter than what would be metronomically "correct". To be clear, there is no problem in playing a shuffle pattern which doesn't fall strictly within the triplet subdivision, but in this case the song calls for a stricter triplet vibe. Also, no matter how you're spacing your eighth notes, you want them to be consistent. There were times where the swung eighth note fit within the triplet (0:57), but as soon as you hit the crash cymbals you may notice your eighth notes straighten out (3:15). This could just be a physical thing as it looks like you're mostly isolating your wrist in your right hand and using one repetitive wrist stroke for every hit. IMHO I would suggest employing the use of more fingers/rebound. This would lead you closer to something resembling the open-close or push-pull technique, which is typical for shuffle patterns and would not only make things easier, but would also provide a more natural hi-hat phrasing. A side thought of technique; I could be wrong but it appears to me that your concept of technique was obtained through a teacher or a book saying things like "play from your wrists," "don't use your arms," etc etc. and I say similar things to my students, but it all needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Those are the base concepts of technique -- points of departure, rather than strict rules. It's important to remember that good technique is whatever technique lends itself to good sound and technical capabilities while causing minimal stress to your body, rather than being any specific form. How many super professional drummers do you see playing with techniques similar to your own? Find your favourite drummers (or perhaps simply those with the most technical prowess) and try to imitate/emulate their technical concept, and I think you'll find it to be much more fulfilling that sticking to any technical doctrine of rules. This is in the same way that transcribing your favourite drummers is infinitely more fulfilling than pulling licks or grooves from books or tutorials, because not only are you training your ears, but you are picking up the personalities and nuances that actually make those things hip. This paragraph was just a tangent though, haha. I'm only bothering to point these things out because it's clear that you understand that fundamentals and details are what make or break you. On a song like this where you essentially have an established groove and play it throughout, we have the privilege to be picky! Keep it up RBM
***** Thank you for your input, I appreciate it! When I first started learning this song it was hard for me and I struggled with it. Honestly, no one told me how to play the hi-hat pattern, I just tried to figure something out that fit and sounded somewhat like what I was hearing the original drummer playing in the song. I had no idea what I'm doing as I have had no instruction on how to play a correct 'triplet vibe' as you say. I haven't taken drum lessons in a while. (I took lessons the first 2 years of my drumming) I wish I could take lessons again but just can't afford it.
Great job. What kind of drum throne do you have? You look like you really enjoy playing and i like how you smile at the end of every song. How did you pick this song to cover?
Hey. Love your videos! Would you mind helping a teen female drummer out? Got questions about doing youtube videos. Like do you use an interface, what software, how many mics, etc...? Please help!
JoAnn Ward Hi JoAnn! My whole kit is miced along with 2 overhead mics and a mic for the hi-hat. So that is 8 mics total. The mics run through an interface, PreSonus Fire-studio Pro. Then into my husbands laptop and he uses Garage Band. A video camera records me drumming, then the recording from the drum mics is mixed with the actual song I am covering. Then the video is added in and everything is synced. If you can't do it this way you can always just video tape yourself drumming then add the song to it in Garage Band. Hope this helps!
Holy cow. such a hard song to drum to. And you did sooooooo good. I would be honored if you just peaked at my channel. You in my books are the greatest classic rock drummer on RUclips. Keep going!
