Thank you so much for this video and the one prior. I am a manicurist for 29 yrs and am always open to learning. I feel like there isn't enough for us. I love the way you teach. Thank you!!!
I'm watching this now and currently doing training at a salon and literally, the biggest advice the nail techs have given me there is "Don't be afraid (to cut cuticles)." But absolutely NO ONE teaches me the correct method to do it, how to hold the tool properly, etc. But they expect be to cut the cuticle correctly and efficiently.
Holding the nippers wrong. Whew, good info. That and the whole creating callous by over nipping. So glad you’re doing these videos. Can’t wait for the gel application to see what I’ll learn there!!
The salon I work at is drill free , & I have been searching the web for a video like this! I knew I did not have a good understanding of nippers and this video just saved me! I am so much more confident and thank you so much for this video it’s perfect and just what I needed!!!!
This vid was excellent for anyone doing nails. If you are licensed just remember to check with your state on what they allow so that you are working within the scope of your license.
yours too? I feel like what I've learned over the years watching Liz and other amazing nail artists is exponentially better than anything I learned in school. I have noticed that many things were glazed over and its sad to know nail techs just coming out of school get even less information nowadays
Could you do a video showing someone with bad cuticles and cleaning that up? Your cuticles are pretty nice on their own! Your video was great and super informative (I am a professional nail tech but still pretty new, and not very confident with challenging cases.) The ladies I work with don’t think I take enough off the sides, but honestly, I’m not exactly sure what they mean. Is there cuticles on the sides of the nail? I’ve watched them work, and they go all around the nail and it looks smooth and clean when they are done, but I can’t tell what they are cutting....Thank you so much for this series! It’s really helpful to me to be a better nail tech! Most of the cuticle nipping videos out there aren’t very good or knowledgeable. Oh, and I work in a spa environment, so we only do the natural nail, no enhancements.
Stephanie Coyle except she literally IS a professional, trying to do better work. typically trade schools get you licensed but you gotta do the heavy lifting yourself to pick up the bits of information you weren’t given like this person is trying to do. idk why youre on a high horse wit this woman cause YOU ain’t a nail tech at all period. lol
@@steffthundershots2863 What the hell, Stephanie? Do you need help? I mean that genuinely. You can contact me if you need help w/whatever you're going through. This was super out of line and unacceptable.

Hi Liz, I've recently qualified as a nail tech! Along side my course I have been watching your fundermentals videos. I feel they have helped me a lot and just wanted to say Thank You! I love how you explain things in detail while still making things easy to understand. So thanks again for sharing your knowledge, you really made a difference. Xxx
So much quality content here! Iv been doing my own nails for 30 years and came across a lot of this information the hard way, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOUUUUU????😀😘😃
This was perfect for me. I'm a mom and my daughter and son have huge cuticles that tear and bleed and I was afraid to use the scissors to trim them to prevent this. But now I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to do it safely and correctly. thank you!

Wow! My mind was blown when i saw how the correct way to use the cuticle nipper! So awesome. I tried it and works so much better! Thanks! Glad I found this video! 😊
Great video so thorough in your descriptions. I’ve been doing my own nails for 35 years - always used the cuticle scissors. I’ve tried to use the nippers but I found them too fiddly. I’m glad that you didn’t push for one or the other - as long as the cuticle is cut safely. Great videos, thank you.
As a compulsive skin picker that’s hacks and tweezes my cuticles *correction hyponychium this has been so useful I have really ruined my nails because of this illness- callous, brittle, ridged, bulbous and sore! This video was so informative and I wish that the salons in my area would be this thoughtful. The techs I have had just keep cutting until I bleed. I've changed techs/salons so many times and also have gotten to the point where I tell techs to not cut my cuticles. Hopefully more techs and schools are seeing your videos so they see the errors of their ways.
Amazingly Informative Video again ! Thank you so much for this serie 🙏❤ I can't believe how not up to date certain "nail/cosmetology schools/teachers" are 😨😐
i'm trying to recover from a nail/cuticle biting/picking habit. managed to kick picking at nice smooth skin and nails, but once it gets ragged i can't rest till it's gone! leads to terrible bloody cuticles, scabby fingers and many infected hangnails. I can't afford manicures, so i've been trying to keep up with my cuticles myself--ending up with a lot of overworked and raw skin alllll the time. this thorough and science-based overview is just what i needed to find a balance, to keep my fingers free of snags and things that would trigger me to pick and bite. Thank you so much for this! it's gonna really save my fingers this winter.
I'd just like to say thank you *so* much for putting out this series of videos. I've been slowly progressing through these over the last week, because I've found myself in the situation that I'm sure a lot of people are now where I can no longer go to get my nails done professionally due to Covid-19 isolation requirements. In my case I've also got sensory nerve damage that means that I cannot type on my fingertips anymore so it's extremely important that I strengthen my nails in order to be able to type on them instead - I'm a software developer so if my nails break I can't type and therefore I can't work. I'm just starting to look at going to school to be a nail tech and I watch your videos and I will probably not need most of the schooling by the time I get there because you are such a wonderful teacher! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos!!!!!
Just a question I searched to see whether it's a good idea to cut your cuticle and there are many articles that say it's not. Here's a quote. Dermatologists say there's no good reason to cut the cuticles. Cutting them could open the door to infection or irritation. "If you remove the cuticle, that space is wide open, and anything can get in there," Scher says. Cutting your cuticles can also lead to nail problems, such as ridges, white spots, or white lines.
12:50 The fact that you didn't push the cuticle and pushed the proximal nail fold (PNF) blew my mind. I was doing it wrong all the time. Mostly because everyone is calling the tool cuticle pusher when it should be called PNF pusher. I used to scrap that layer of dead skin that is on stuck on the nail plate pushing upwards thinking that's the correct way. Now I understood we only use the pusher to push and PNF and open a pocket underneath to clean off the underlying dead skin aka the cuticle. Thanks for the video. Helped a lot!
i hope you still get our notifications on us watching videos later but i remember you hearing your on the middle about how much you remove with cuticle skin. i would be interested on hearing your thoughts about the russian manicure.
You are a fantastic teacher and your vids have helped me enormously. I do have one question however! When you say ‘perpendicular’, I may be wrong, but do you mean parallel? So sorry to flag this but I can’t understand what you mean by perpendicular. It could be me though!
After watching ur videos, I realize how extreme my teacher goes when cutting cuticles with a nippers. She tends to cut every tiny slice of cuticles. Now I know that's not necessary. Whenever I think of her standard of trimming, I am too stressed out to start, for being afraid of bleeding.😢

What a great tutorial! So informative to a DIY like me! I’ve given myself manicures since I was a sophomore in high school! I’m now a senior citizen! I’m looking forward to seeing all your videos to give me a bit of knowledge on what I’m doing, instead of “trial by fire” I switched from polish to shellac 8 years ago, and in the past months added gel to allow my nails to grow longer w/o cracking. In the past few months I’ve had to deal with blistering on my proximal nail fold and hyponychium. My last manicure only my thumb had that issue. Of course after the blisters subsided, I had to deal with dead skin, on the eponychium, and nail fold causing me to use the nippers to get rid of it. I don’t give myself a new manicure until everything heals. My question is how do I stop these incidences, because I’m afraid of permanently messing up my nail bed! It’s been suggested my curing time was inadequate. I purchased a new lamp, which came yesterday. In the past I never sanitized my nippers, with no ill effects. Since the start of the blistering AND itching of my fingers, starting after I completed my manicure, I’ve tried to soaking them in hydrogen peroxide to eliminate any bacteria. I even tried alcohol and the peroxide to soak my nippers, w/o luck, because my thumb, and one other finger had the blistering at my hyponychium. This time my fingers did not itch. So it’s not an allergy. I hope you can help me Sue

Wow! 2nd video of yours I am watching! Learning more from you than I learnt from my beauty school training back in 2006! P.S. I am from South Africa :-)
I appreciate all of the great information you have given us. I know now that I haven’t been holding the nippers correctly while trimming my cuticles and now they are overdone and are now thicker. My question is what can I do to rehab my cuticles back to good health? Thanks again for all that you do to help us👍🏾🙏🏾
Moisture really helps rehab cuticles. Instead of just cuticle oil I often recommend more salve type products applied at night time before bed. Heck even petroleum jelly is good but my fave is actually Bag Balm. It has a bit of urea and lanolin in it and helps heal skin IMHO. Aquaphor is good too or anything like that.
I love how you explain everything so perfectly 💖 I think I prefer scissors. They make me feel more confident, as I believe I have more control with them. I’d love to practice on someone other than myself, but I have no one willing to be my guinea pig.... Thank you again for a wonderful lesson 💖💖💖😘
Hi i love these videos. 💓im recently back to being a nail tech after about ten yrs of doing another profession. I think doing a mani with no water is a great idea but i have a hard time with clients who feel that they need to soak their nails in water. How do u suggest i can explain how water is damaging to the nail? They look at me like I've lost my mind!!!
I'm a DIYer with a specific question. I have very dry skin and nails even though I use cuticle oil and moisturizing hand cream often throughout the day and especially at night. The skin (not the cuticle) alongside each nails gets dry and hard. I tend to pick at it, which tears the skin. Do you suggest using a nail file to remove the buildup of skin when it's hard and dry? A file seems better than a nipper or cuticle scissors for this purpose.
Yes or a smooth pumice will help exfoliate. Just be careful not to overdo it. And a lot of options contain very strong ingredients so make sure your lotion is truly moisturizing. Unfortunately a lot of lotions have alcohol as I've of the top 3 ingredients. Look for balms and emolients that stay put better than oil and don't have ingredients that will add to the problem. For example in the winter I use bag balm (it's full of lanolin) on my skin. It works great.
This series is so good and informative. Thanks Liz
Fantastic information! This has been an issue since I started working in salons 30 years ago.

Wow! 2nd video of yours I am watching! Learning more from you than I learnt from my beauty school training back in 2006! P.S. I am from South Africa :-)
Definitely gonna switch to using scissors thank you

Very well presented, interesting and informative. Love it, so glad I stumbled across you!
@@TheNailHub thanks so much! I will try that👊🏽🙏🏾
I love how you explain everything so perfectly 💖 I think I prefer scissors. They make me feel more confident, as I believe I have more control with them. I’d love to practice on someone other than myself, but I have no one willing to be my guinea pig....
Thank you again for a wonderful lesson 💖💖💖😘
Amazing ❤️ Really love educational videos so people can learn to do it right :)

The best videos that I saw . Thank you soooooooo much
Hi i love these videos.
Between myself, hubby, and three kids (2 teens and 1 preteen), I'm about to get some serious practice.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been looking for something like this for so long.
Thank you for great info.Your such a great teacher.I just love your channel...
Love how informative you are thank you!!!!
Excellent video thanks.... All day i was holding the nippers wrong at work.😒💔
I'm a DIYer with a specific question.
Great explanations!
Thank you so much for this information!!! Loved it and love how your doing these videos!
