in italy we have a brand called TM racing that produces supermotards that are a great alternative to ktm because they build good quality handmade italian supermotards designed for that specifical type of riding at the same price or even less of a ktm and they are even street legal (according to Italian law)

It’s the most aggressive and amazing bike that I’ve ridden. I’ve been riding for many years and own many types of bikes and a supermoto will always be my freedom on two wheels. I watched this video when it came out and loved it. I just watched it again today while standing in front of my 2021 drz400sm in the garage and you made me so much more excited for the spring to come and the dreaded snow to melt. I started riding on an mt07 which is known for being a fun, torquey, easily flickable feeling 700 like a big street dirtbike in a naked bike body and it is Loads of fun. But I live near trails and grew up riding dirtbikes. I then got my drz400sm there is just something about it. I can have more fun in more places without breaking as many laws. If it isn't just speed you are looking for a supermoto is by far more smiles per mile. Easy to say I sold my mt07 after a month of buying my new drz. And I can only imagine the adrenaline from an exc500f or a 690 but the drz400sm is as reliable as it gets for a supermoto and as someone that works on their cars, machines it is something to appreciate. Being able to beat the living piss out of my bike and use its full potential on any road or trail and needing the most basic of maintenance on stretched intervals is a quite beautiful thing. This video was great thanks for pumping me up for the 2023 season. much love to the supermoto fam all over! Most people think they are pointless or not "real bikes" until they ride one. From a cold canuck in ontario, Canada. Cheers.

You are right about sport bike riders not knowing what to think when they get passed by a big red pig coming out of a corner with my fat arse on it. 🤣 Hell just yesterday chased down my buddy on his sv650 then his friend on his mt09 on these back roads out in Mexico. When we stopped the guy on the MT09 was like "wth is that thing. It's a rocketship." Ooof, at the 16:28 mark you called an XR650R a 650L... ouch (a pimped one too with CRF forks spliced on and a massive front brake rotor). Forgivable, sort of... it's Honda's fault for making one letter differentiate two completely different bikes. But still... if you kept finding XRRs in SUMO trim but not XRLs... it's telling you something, no? I wish you'd have mentioned the 650R as a potential SUMO at least. Forums are full of XRR SUMOs and they look amazing. Guys love 'em even though I know they don't have the punch of a 701 or any of the new bikes you mentioned. Still, I can't imagine they'd not be better than the 650L in every respect. I have two XRRs now and will one day take one of them down the SUMO road... when my African desert riding finally brakes me or I move somewhere with better tarmac... probably about the time I'm too chickensh*t to ride it properly, but it'll be a blast to try!

  • @nicolasa.3192
    @nicolasa.3192 2 года назад +5

Up here in Canada trying to get a SuMo is tough because you can't convert a dirt bike due to our laws. It has to be a dual sport, or it's illegal and doesn't count as a road bike. Another reason why dual sport bikes are so expensive and hold their value so well second hand here these days.

I've ridden some other dirt bikes, but I've always been into road bikes. So, one day, when i finally bought a dream bike, i wasn't sure what I really wanted. I split all my contenders down, until i had narrowed it down between a 2020 KTM SMC -R and a 890 Duke R naked road bike. While between the two, I'm fairly satisfied with my purchase of the Duke. However, while still daydreaming of pure supermoto, I think that my choice was a rough one with KTM either way. I had heard a number of recall issues for both the SMC and the Duke. The SMC looks like a cheap quality trap, honestly. My bike, bought brand new off the dealership floor with 1 mile on it, started leaking oil from the head gasket almost immediately, and pretty heavily. I took it back for a warranty issue. It ended up taking a month and a half. Apparently that was a month straight of pending KTM's approval to cover it. Every time I need the simplest of parts, it can be a potential month or more wait time. KTM is notorious for having their more rare merchandise and parts wait list longer than 6 months. Great bike to ride, lots of fun. Still not pleased with the price point and the maintenance of this bike. It was like 13-15 Gs after taxes and options, and it's constantly shredding tires, chains, sprockets, etc. Guess that's what it's supposed to do. However, its a niche enough bike, that while its unique to ride, it doesn't exactly do anything better than other bikes you could get for the same price. Although although, it does have the best torque of it's engine class. That's kinda KTM's deal over the YZ's and MT09's. Anyway, cheers!

I owned a brand new 2006 KTM 660 SMC back in the day with a view to racing in the 660 cup only to be told only the older single pipe models were eligible. I went on some Supermoto trackdays and the CRF450 was the bike to have at the time, the 660 was a bit heavy. I bought a 2 or 3 year old CRF450 crosser in 2008 and converted it before moving abroad instead of racing it. When I got back a couple of years later the CRF450 was no longer competitive so I traded it in for a 2007 KTM 560 which had a built engine. I raced in the open class in 2011 but it was already struggling against the newer KTM 450's and in 2012 I wasn't competitive at all and was one of only a handful of larger capacity bikes out there. I couldn't afford to run new slicks let alone keep upgrading bikes so I sold it and called it a day.
The KTM 660 was my favorite, awesome for wheelies, not that bad on fuel and I've only ever seen 2 of my model in real life, my best mate liked mine so much he bought a new one too. Servicing was a nightmare on it as you had to bleed the air from the frame which held the oil and it needed to be done every 1000 - 1500 miles.
I later got a kawaski versys 650, fitted some renthals, made a few minor changes to the suspension and with a long service interval kind of got the best of all worlds. I took that on a tarmac supermoto only day and was beating a lot of supermoto's with it. I also took the versys offroad a bit in Spain and it had capability in the dry.

Great vid! I agree with your points. Currently just about done building a FE501 SM. For anybody on the fence of building vs buying, just buy a DRZ400SM or 690/701SM. The headaches of converting aren't worth it. I'm going to be $8K-$10K into my conversion (not including price of bike) when all is said and done. Granted I'm going all out but there's too many little annoying issues that pop up with a conversion along with waiting months for wheels to be built and obtaining proper brakes. I could have been riding a 701SM for the last 4 months instead sweating and cussing in my garage.

just finished watching the video and it couldn't be more obvious that this is a video made from the north american pointof view, here in europe you can make a supermoto out of anything, we have yamaha dt/yz/wr, husqvarna (husaberg) wr/fe/fc/fs, ktm exc/xc/xcw/smr, tm as a whole, beta as a whole, honda crf (the whole line), suzuki rmz/rmx/drz, kawasaki kx(f), this includes 2 and 4 strokes, for us supermoto is anything we want it to be, you just turned 16 and want a supermoto? get a dt 125 or an exc 125 or whatever 125 enduro bike you want and put supermoto wheels on it, you can make them legal or they already come legalized, it really is better here I feel like, I'm sorry that you have to resort to the 690 because it's a terrible bike when you compare it to a well built 450 from any other manufacturer... it really is only better when it comes to maintaining it, but even the new 450s from ktm are becoming better at that so hopefully the 690 line will die so people can enjoy the true feeling of a supermoto

The story you told about SWM was pretty much entirely wrong.
There wasn't a warehouse full of old Husqvarna bikes. When KTM bought Husqvarna they abandoned an entire new factory in Italy, along with all the tooling to build a range of Husqvarna bikes.
So the SWM is basically a newly built 2010 Husqvarna with updated suspension and fuel injection. Built in Italy BTW. And parts should be available, since the bikes are actually still in production.

If you can find a dealer and have the money - get a TM. These are just the best Supermotos. Price is lower and Maintaince is about the same level as KTM 450/500. 2 and 4 Strokes available. Stay away from the Aprilia SVX cause its engine with its high and very expensive maintaince just bleeds you out. Reliablity nothing gets over the 650 thumpers (if you do the service) but they are also on the heavier side and will be never as mimble as you really want it (thats the true advantage of the 690smr cause they got the handling very right) and if you upgrade them you will end on the price tag like a factory 701 but again will not have bike which handles like it. SWM is also high maintaince frequency just like the original Huskies. 300L is very low maintaince, low weight, low starting price but also so less power than you can also buy a Fantic/Beta 125cc 4T Supermoto and just put a 160cc large Bore Kit in it and they will eat 300L for breakfast cause much better suspension and even less weight.
I drive a 92´Dominator converted to 17", 01´Cagiva Navigator converted to 17", 97´Derbi Senda L 80cc converted to 17" but best true Sumo was Fantic SM 50 after spending almost 5k on "research&developement"...lol...and when i got my pocketmoney together, ill get a Fantic TZ 125 2stroke with its might 125cc GasGas engine XD

I did the same thing with a '04 450exc that I got at around half the price that I paid for a '04 DRZ 400s, and the 450 has half the miles/ hours. Also, it objectively performes better in EVERY way. KTM 450 might be the best bang for the buck dual sport??? I saw quite a few nice 450s and even some 520/ 525s at, and well under, the usual $4K price point of decent DRZs. Supposedly they're actually extremely reliable too, but only if keept on top of their short service intervals (one downside vs. the DRZ, but definitely worth the little extra effort imo)

The 500cc 2 Strokes are fun.. But as a super Moto they drink a lot of gas.. I think the 250s are the best Super Moto setup equipped with a desert tank.. Easier to mix your pre-mix if you have to at the gas station.. In the two-stroke world that 250 is equal to a 500 might as well be equal to a 650 when you look at the toilet design of the actual super motos.. You must build your own from scratch that the new KTM 2 stroke fuel injected might be the ticket like a feather.. 125 super motos would be a blast to.. And with a desert tank you won't have to worry about running out of gas.. Super high revs.

our energy grid is already on it's last legs right now & can not handle electric cars/bikes on top of the demand. What fires
the electric plants when a river/lake isn't available is coal, gas type liquids, and some natural gases but using fossil fuels

It is the coolest guy made a Super Moto video but he completely does not understand super motos.... The reason you have a Supermoto is to convert to CR500 or 250 or any two-stroke motorcycle motocross bike into a Supermoto so you can ride your two-stroke on city streets.. Why would you want a 650 toilet 4-stroke when you can get a 250 that weighs less than half the weight and can go much faster.. And you can run aviation fuel or racing fuel in it it's like having a Formula One on the street.. Much cheaper much more worth the money.. Then you will get everybody looking at it It looks so cool with the expansion chamber. You can tame the sound with a decent Muffler.

Built mine out of a crf450R! Yeah it vibrates a lot and is older so kickstart only but all my friends that ride with me see me and try it out and realize why I love it. I picked up the 450 in dirt form for $1500, reset valves and cleaned the carb so did some time investment, but otherwise I think I got in super cheap
