    Love this design. Reading the comments it sounds like your temps are similar to mine in Upstate NY. Do you think the chickens could stay in his type of enclosure day and night? They currently stay in a small (4 x 6') mobile coop built on a garden wagon base and we do not provide heat - they have done well for 3 years now in this set up - even during our yearly bouts of below freezing days (down to -16 a few times/year). We do provide a heated water bowl so the water doesn't freeze up. Also... some of the comments have links to your website which do not work - has the URL changed or do you no longer have the website? THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO!!!

    Hi, now that you've had your hoop coop for four years, how is the
    plastic holding up. I was warned that wind will rub the plastic against
    the metal and lots of holes would be the result within a year. Can you
    confirm this? Thanks a lot from NZ. E.

    • @theredbridgefarm1254

      Plastic is still in good shape. We tucked the plastic in tight so it can't flap. Ours is also laying horizontal to the main wind direction. This makes the wind roll over the hoop. We have not had any issues with the wind.

    We have a smaller version of the run 8x12. Since winter time in the Pacific NW, we have condensation on the inside of the tarp, which is dripping onto the sand floor of the run. Have you addressed a prevention method? We don't currently have electricity to the run for fans.

    • @theredbridgefarm1254
      @theredbridgefarm1254  11 месяцев назад

      With the open airflow, we never had the condensation issue. Once we closed the ends up, we added a basic box fan in one end and that kept the condensation down.

    Do they pasture on the snow each day? I noticed your electric fence. Do move them onto “fresh pasture” every few days even when it’s covered with snow? Thank you. I’m learning a lot.

    • @theredbridgefarm1254
      @theredbridgefarm1254  11 месяцев назад

      In the winter time, we keep them in one place. The fence is to keep the predators out. With the hoop coop, they get the extra wing space to stretch out. Most of these birds do not care to touch the snow lol.

    Do your hens in the winter go scratch around in the frozen ground.?I'm in the process of fencing 110X45'foot lot and untill recently I had never seen electric net fencing.im gonna use it for further subdividing my lot.I've been trimming mistletoe from the oak trees on my lot.i am working on introducing edible mushrooms spores to the soil by chipping up the oak and leaf litter and move if my hens a-frame over the spot to enrich the soil with there poop.you got some beautiful hens in that video.i only have a 12 pack of lAdies in my flock

    • @freddymeischer2219
      @freddymeischer2219 6 лет назад

      I like the idea of mobility.i don't know about your hens but mine dig holes,I'm talking big aasss deep holes they could get down in and have a card game in.!
      And move ing the hens around is gonna allow some soil enrichment.
      And people in the"know" have told me to till in chicken and horse manure first then and your mushrooms spores and oak chips and water.
      And with luck you can turn a wood lot into a mushrooms forest.in California lot managers charge people to harvest mushrooms on there property.

      Brian Shea no we don't heat it in the winter. We have a Mobil coop that backs up to the hoop coop which the birds sleep in at night. we have about 100 birds in each mobile coop. they keep each other quite warm. if it gets relay cold we do but some heat lamps in the coop for them at night. the hoop coop however gets up to about 50-80 degrees during the day depending on the sun in the winter.

I've got a hectare of land but it's a weird shaped a 40m x 275m plot of land, means i got to pull the coop at least 16 times per year and fence them teporary with electric fence and pull it back back to zero position on winter months that in Poland we have about 4-5.

We are located in north east Washington state. The birds really like it when there is snow on the ground. We have also used this as a brooder for meat birds in the summer. We just tarp it to keep it cool. Works quite nice.

      Howdy. The plastic is still holding well. This is 4mil greenhouse plastic that is uv resistant. It is pulled tight and my wind blows north or south over the unit as it layes east/west. It has a few pricks and very small holes. Mostly from the birds walking on it. But all in all it is still in really good condition.
