This is exactly what I was looking for!! I’d imagine for a backyard chicken coop you can use this and keep the traditional coop house inside it and use your hoop house as a enclosed run.
Nice build! I sandwich the hardware cloth between the cattle panel and the wooden frame then secure the sandwich with pipe strapping going horizontal and vertical over the cattle panel frame on the inside.
We built ours based on @LivingtraditionsHomestead as well 3 years ago. Still amazing! Built two more! We are currently building one just a house a pool for winter time so the ducks can swim! You can buy really thick agricultural typing at tractor supply you pay a little more, but it does not rip ever ! These coops are amazing !
Hardware clothes on the bottom is great to keep out predators. But, it is very hard on chickens feet. Especially young chick's whose feet are not toughened up yet. Also, once the plants begin growing through the cloth, you will not be able to move it. But it is a great design!
Y'all are getting to be some regular hoop structure builders. It was good you had your brother directing traffic as you pulled it. lol I'm beginning to think you like the challenge of moving large objects by hand.
Haha we are getting the cattle panel builds down! We have plans to build a couple more, too. The traffic direction was hilarious to us. And I do like moving huge things haha we shouldn't have to move this one too much. It's not too mobile.
You almost disappointed me And then you broke out the zip ties 😂 I like it I wanted to build a chicken tractor for smalls or meat chickens Great idea and seems pretty simple Thanks for sharing
With how expensive materials are right now, that must be a minimum $600 build! I have goats running around with the chickens so I'm using cheaper chicken wire for 80% of my build. I'm also leaving the bottom partially open. I have a slope they'll be on and I'll have one end elevated on blocks with their roosts to allow manure to hit the ground.
Yes! This is the video I was waiting for. I love the tip to use plumber’s tape instead of staples. Hopefully now your chickens will be safe from the neighbor dogs 😅 I’m laughing at the backing up director-that’s good stuff 😂 Great build, great video!
That is almost exactly what need… not for chickens but as a squirrel proof greenhouse for my container garden as have a gazillion ground squirrels here. Thanks. Do you have a materials list by any chance? This is awesome
Lol squirrels seem like they can get through anything, this would be a good challenge for them! I also have some videos on cattle panel greenhouses if that is something you are interested in
Not to step on any toes, Bobblehead Jeff always put bike tires on the back when he moves his, just an idea, he would always take the tires back off when he was done. And I love the the bottom because like you said nothing can come up from the bottom and get them. Still trying to catch up on all your videos
Hey Tammy! Yeah that definitely would have been a smart move but we didn’t have any wheels and didn’t want to buy any. I don’t plan on moving the coop too often, I think we are just going to build another one for our garden and then just move the birds around haha
What is the height of the top of the arch with the base being 8’ wide? Looking to build almost identical to this, but need to spread the base wide enough that the top won’t be visible over my 6’ privacy fence (keep HOA eyes out). Great job looks amazing. Thx!
I think it was a couple rolls to completely cover. Maybe even three. If I could go back I would not hardware cloth the floor though, it has made it hard to move
Thanks for the video! 😊 We are looking into building a hoop coop. How is this one doing, six months down the road? I know originally you were using it as temporary for chicks coming outside, but did you end up making this a permanent coop? How has it held up? Other than putting hardware cloth on the bottom before adding the panels, is there anything you'd do differently now that you've had it for a while?
Hey Emily! This had chicks in it for a few weeks and then we have not needed it much. I would say it performed well, but it was hard to move once grass grew through it. We are either making this a permanent shelter for our meat chickens this year or taking it apart to use the hardware cloth in our mobile coop I am building soon. This isn't too mobile, but if you are looking for something a little more long term I think it would work! It also depends on your winters, That is why it might work for meat birds because they won't be around when its cold. Thank you for watching, good luck in your build:)
Your hardware cloth will catch and hold all of the poop and be very hard to clean off, as well as mat down your grass and cause unnecessary destruction to it making it harder for it to regenerate after it is moved.
Hey! Check out 'How to add wheels to your chicken coop' by Buck's Small Engine DIY. It looks like it could possibly be an option for your type of frame. 🤞 Also, would a rope handle work till you get more handles?
Hey, June! I will have to check out the video. I think we plan on building a couple mobile coops and putting them in the garden/orchard and maybe the blueberry patch and using them as needed. Wheels would have definitely made that move easier haha We were planning on using rope, but we discovered we did not have any. It's always good to be prepared. Same thing with wheels. We need to buy some if we are going to use them. Probably a good investment haha I hope you are doing well:)
You ought to be able to figure out a way to pop on some wheels on the one end for when you move it. I have a mobile hoop tunnel for my tomatoes that I move when I rotate my garden beds. I've been trying to figure a way to do it on wheels. Something like this, minus the bottom, would do it. The hardware cloth would protect them from hail. This gave me some good ideas to work from. Thanks!
hmmm Id get rid of the cattle panel and get rid of the hard ware clothe and get something that is smaller but with the same strength as the cattle panel. Then put tarp over the top.
It was intended to be used as a transitionary coop for the birds in the brooder before they got to the big coop, and it could be for meat birds. I would have to build some nesting boxes for them if I put my layers in there.
Late to the party here…any reason you didn’t/ wouldn’t use the plumber’s tape and screws instead of screws with big washers to secure the hardware cloth?
Hey, Darius! Better late than never haha And I don't really have a good answer for you, We always seem to be running low on plumber's tape and have plenty of washers on hand. Maybe that's something to try out. I think that washers create a tighter seal, but I have never tried the plumbers tape.
@@TheNorthBranchWI Pretty well! I used both. I liked the plumber’s tape more - 2 screws plus the tape between them secure more hw cloth surface area. It was also much thinner, which allowed screws to go in a bit deeper. The washers were fine too. I used quite a bit, sometimes interspersing them with the plumbers tape. Maybe they’d be preferable if the screws were longer than 1” and with fender washers. Plumbers tape FTW!
@@dariuskirkwood7669 Nice! I might have to try that out then. I am worried about the jagged edges I always leave on plumbers tape when I cut it. But I am going to order some plumbers tape soon, maybe I will up the order haha
@@vanessamarcelo I had issues with grass growing though the small spaces in the hardware cloth, so I couldn't move it once that happened. No predators are getting in though haha
@@TheNorthBranchWI Will it be okay if I move the tractor everyday? I am seriously considering putting wire on the floor for mine because we have lots of predators in the area.
That was nice to build your hoop house in the barn. The chickens were checking it out too! 🐓
Yeah it’s really nice to have a level place to build now. The chickens and geese love stopping by
Such a great project! Thanks for sharing with us! I'm your new friend and I hope we keep in touch! 👍+🔔
The wife has been after me to build her one!
Looks good and sturdy
Haha get to building! It seems extremely sturdy
Haha the traffic hand signs are gold
Hahah thank you!

It looks great! I love that the chickens came in to check the progress halfway through!
Thank you! And yeah they’re always hanging out haha
Turned out very nice Evan.
Thanks, Jesse!
I Love the Coop!! It looks Very Sturdy!! 👍
Thanks, Karen! I appreciate that, it’s very sturdy. So far At least haha
Nice build! I sandwich the hardware cloth between the cattle panel and the wooden frame then secure the sandwich with pipe strapping going horizontal and vertical over the cattle panel frame on the inside.
Wow, that is interesting! I’m sure I’ll be building with cattle panels again in the future. I will keep this in mind
How is it holding up two years later?

A chicken tractor with wire cloth on the floor won't work. Chicken coop, yes.
Yeah, it turned into a mobile coop build along the way haha

I learned that the hard way haha I think the chicks were okay because that was just a sleeping roost for them. But I couldn’t move that thing haha
@@TheNorthBranchWI I learned that the hardway as well. That's how I know.hahaha
Looks awesome! Great job. We love a Living Traditions as well very helpful! Thanks for your info
Great build, thanks for the content.
For future builds, black zip ties are more UV stable for longevity in the sun.
That is a great idea! I will have to pick up a pack when I am at a hardware store next

We literally ran out of zip ties building this thing. It’s like held together with them 😂
I bought J clips and the pliers that crimp them from Amazon. FYI in case those zip ties disintegrate in the sun.
Great job, guys!!

I really enjoy your builds In your Homestead you and your brother are very hard workers God bless
Thank you, Michelle 😊 we definitely keep ourselves busy. Thank you for watching!
I used 2x6 instead of 2x4 for the bottom frame just to make it a little healthier. We get pretty windy in the fall.

It was lol! 🤣
Most expensive part was probably the hardware cloth! lol. Did you use treated lumber?
Love it, but I have heard of owls bending metal to get into chicken coops! Wonder what to do about that?
The mesh wire on the bottom defeats the main thing for a chicken tractor. They can’t scratch and get bugs and grass to eat. Just saying.😄
I do the same. Grass grows through it but the birds are still protected.

The tool you were looking for on the door is a planer
I wish I had this much level ground
How much did it cost to build this? It looks great
thanks this is just the video I was hoping to find! Do you recall how much hardware cloth you needed to cover the whole thing?
I think it was a couple rolls to completely cover. Maybe even three. If I could go back I would not hardware cloth the floor though, it has made it hard to move
While i like the idea, i would recommend pressure treated lumber andoutdoor rated zip ties, not those easy to break white ones. Just my opinion.
How did this work out through the Winter in keeping the chickens warm enough?
hi Debbie, I didnt keep chickens in there in the winter. I like open air coops, but this would probably not be enough for the birds for our winter.

I would have put some training wheels in the back of it so you can move it around much better
What kind of tarp did you use?
How tall is the door? I love it
How many 2x4 did this take
Your door is sagging because you don't have 45 degree cross bracing.
Great idea with the metal mesh at the bottom!
