Great work! Especially being the only photographer there, having no assistant and moving your flashes around and dealing with the low light! True pro at work! Keep up the great work!
I had one back in July. Fortunately I wasn’t supposed to take pics in the dark but since she was my friend I did some just to practice and omg 🫠 it was the worst I couldn’t even see thru the viewfinder. I’m a beginner so you can imagine how nervous I was, even when I wasn’t getting paid. But yeah worst experience ever.
One of my favourite videos, I particularly loved the 100% crop shot, lots of noise and you can see noise throughout all the pics and they still look beautiful. I really need to get away from 'noise fear' as this is just a part of photography (for now at least!) I think we can be so focused on everything being perfect that we can miss the storytelling and what matters. Thanks Taylor.
I really like your technique of action camming the photography, then after adding your commentary. We don't need to hear the event, just you. Plus I think it lets you stay in the moment of shooting, then later tells us what to you is instinct. Good Job.
If a wedding coordinator hires a photographer and doesn't put adequate lights in the room, you should not be mad if the pictures come out subpar or full on awful, or if they end up receiving far less photos than usual. People have literally no idea what decent - good lighting is to the success of a photographer!!
A true pro would be able to adjust. No matter the lighting. If you Don't know how tonuse your camera and manage post production, you not a real photographer...your just a tourist.
@@mikeeddings432 With lots of movement in the low light setting, there is only so much you can do. You can shoot wide open, but you might not want that extreme bokeh background blur. And if you do want that, it still only goes so far. If you shoot 1/50 shutter speed for example to let in more light, you're gonna have a LOT of motion blur. Pictures are going to be grainy too which you can't really fix in Lightroom all that much. You need light. You can only go so far.
oh yeah! Im not afraid to bump that ISO as high as I need to. I still shoot weddings with a 5DMkII and software nowadays does an amazing job reducing noise. A fast lens is a must!
question i will be shooting a wedding sunday one camera i will be using is the 5d mk ii with only 9 focus points where do i put the focus to get the bride and groom walking and making sure the face is sharp in low light no flash........
You are an absolute LIFESAVER. I'm doing my first -evening- wedding, no assistant or anything. A lot is going to be dependent upon weather and I'm a bit worried about the indoor aspect and venue lighting, but you made me feel a lot more comfortable. I've ran a couple of the settings you posted at the bottom of the frame and they're solid. Thank you so much!
I usually skip when watching videos. But I was caught with this one and ended up watching the whole video without skipping. Imagine shooting events with less light! You sir is above PRO I can tell. Looking forward to your other video.
Another great video, as always. I liked how you stressed that if a wedding is beyond your limitations, don't be afraid to turn them away. It may be a hard pill to swallow for some but could save you major headaches down the road.
The first wedding I ever shot was a night wedding in October. Talk about a challenge, but in the end it was a wonderful experience and made me a stronger photographer.
This Channel makes me want to open up my own channel to show everybody how photography is done under every situation with great visual quality that looks like 2020.
Hell yeah. I agree. This is the one reason that I am not really going out to find "paying clients" because simply put, I still suck too much, and don't quite have "all the right gear" (which is not THAT much gear)... but wouldn't want to tarnish my name before I even get started.
Oh my gosh thank you so much for that 100% crop shot! I've always been concerned if I was doing something wrong at 3200 when they turn out like that, and everyone talks about how great the performance is at high iso (a7iii) but I now know it is what it is. You the man taytay
You are a brave soul ! A wedding at night ,I did one recently and RAIN RAIN RAIN...I was able to save the day in the horribly small 20x20 room seventy people were crammed into due to darkness and rain...your suggestion of the 35mm 1.8 saved me !, don’t go anywhere without it anymore and has become one of my favorites! Thanks!
omg yes!!! I try to explain this to photographers in my area that use flash every ceremony they can. first it produces different quality than the majority. so many do not allow flash. as a result, i just don't and i keep my work consistent in the church/ceremony sites. I don't normally push past ISO 3200 - you are my hero with that ISO 5000+!!
Wow! If I just looked at the pictures, I wouldn't have thought this was done with minimal light and at night. I just shot a wedding with a similar situation. Definitely learned some pointers and tips if there's ever a next time :)
I wish this video was up a couple days ago lol. I shot my first wedding yesterday and it was all after dark. During the reception i was at ISO 5,000 and was worried I had it bumped too high. This makes me feel a little better but was having a hard time getting my flash positioned in good spots to bounce it. Thanks for all your videos though they’re super helpful
mikes1984 lol imagine this is what Taylor means when he gets paid for hybrid coverage. “Yeah guys your wedding was shot on my GoPro! Here’s the footage”
I've shot amazing portrait at night ceremonies outside at 12800 ISO with a d750 and thanks to the sharpness of prime lens the results came very good I even printed one in 60x40cm and it looks perfect withbasic lightroom pos- process. Those FX cameras are damn good, the key is to get the right exposure when shooting because you are more limited in light corrections at that point
I had a wedding under the full moon this year. Outdoor and cloudy, they forgot to turn on spot lights and I shot it just like you. Trust the high iso performance and don't blind people with ocf. Definitely the right choice for the moment.
woooow I couldn't imagine myself with iso 5000.... simply amazing. By the way, when you took their family pictures and how they were walking towatds you at 11:00, did you use off camera flash, yes? Haven't you changed ISO then?
He was running the flash at 1/64 power (the text at 9:45 says that in the top left hand corner) so staying ISO 5000 would work okay with that. He mentions ISO at 9:45 or so.
Taylor, I noticed you have a low F stop for your group photos, are you able to get a clear picture of everyone in the photo? I would have shot F8 for this...
You can do F8 if you want iso 80'000 instead of 5000. (Depth of Field is about 60-100cm's for a 85mm @f2,2, at a distance of 6 to 8 meters) You should consider Landscape photography with f8.
One of the features I never knew I needed until I had it was the 5D IV’s flicker detection. Flickering fluorescent bulbs are such a pain, as you mention @11:00. Then again, I shoot with the 5D and primes, but there’s still a lot to love about the equivalent Nikon setup with the D850 - and capturing a wedding with ambient at ISOs like that (without swearing at your AF) speaks well of any camera. Do you ever use the AF assist light from your flash?
Hi Taylor, would you have any tips for a beginner who is just getting in wedding photography. My cousin is hetting married soon and i wanted take the opportunity to practice. They have hired a professional team for photos and video. How would you take pictures without pissing off the pro photographer. As I am very conscious not to cross my boundry and cause any problem but I still want to take pictures. Please help. Thank you
I’ve learned so much since I subscribed to your channel, Taylor! Just photographed my first wedding lastnight and wish I came across this video before hand. But, glad i learned a lot for next time!
I did a wedding in a back yard with white and yellow lights and odd ceiling areas, and , sun covers, rock walls all over , and kids running around a pool.
I loved this video man. I've shot two weddings and sometimes you never know what you're getting into until you're in it. Your shots turned out great to be using iso 5000..
Modern camera combined with fast lenses can use hi iso and still produce very good and acceptable result in printing and digital file. No need flash, unless you need it for some purpose.
Karolina Lym one thing you gotta remember, your camera is a tool. It’s made to push your iso. Until your images look like pink and green Swiss cheese, you’re totally fine. Don’t be afraid to compensate for lost light with bumping your iso. You can always give it a little NR in post. Thankfully my a7iii can go to 12800 and look halfway decent
I enjoy watching you struggle... er... um... I mean I enjoy watching you overcome difficult situations. It was very helpful, and I appreciate how you talk through how you approach and troubleshoot each scene.

Hi Taylor, love the video. It was perfect timing for me as I just undertook a similarly challenging wedding... candlelit. I'd love to see how you processed your images here. I am struggling to find a balance between sharpness and noise reduction. Also colours are much harder to get right in images taken at 4000-5000 iso. For example, the whites of eyes often go pinky red. Cheers from gloomy England!
Good vídeo, why do you use iso 5000? ISO between 3200 and 6400 is just forced ISO as if you push up 1/2 stop in Lr. But you loose dinamic range. So in theory shooting 3200 will have less grain, more dinamic range. Do you do that for any reason? Thanks.
Awesome Job Taylor, I bet that was pretty tough. ISO 5000 and still able to deliver. 👍🏾👍🏾 Having a flash is key in that situation. Always impressed in your work 👊🏾💯
Hi Taylor, I am fan of your work and tuto. I use your presets a lot and enjoy. Just that i wondered why all my pictures were so noisy and finally noticed you added grain ! I needed to remove it. and you ? I looked your patreon page and must say it is confusing. usually patreon is 5usd full access to courses,... here i see 10, 20 usd sold out and we can only consider 30usd per month which I couldn't afford. However if you click on another button you can be patreon for 5 usd. No idea what Tier means in english. If we want to access your off flash course, what is the cheapest way ? what can we have for 5usd compared to 5,10,20,30 40 usd memberships ?
Great result in this challenging situation ! I'm curious how you approached the technical part of working with high Iso with the couple ? Did you warn them beforehand about the (acceptable but still present) grain that might appear or they didn't mind ?
Can’t get my head around night weddings.. you can barely see anything at all in person. All the work setting up a beautiful wedding and nobody sees it?? Great shots by the way! These must be the toughest wedding conditions?
I have no issue shooting on a 6dm2 with a 35mm 1.4 and the 85 1.4 combo, not shooting at max ap and uping the ISO to 10k and having no issues, poor lighting and everything and still printable images, media photos and what not, don't be afraid, it's better to have grain in the photo than to miss an important moment
I just did a wedding where it was outside in an open field. Super dark and they didn't provide any exterior lights other than some strobe lights and small lights...pitch black was very challenging as it was my first experience in such an experience
What an amazing video. Shooting amazing photos AND an awesome video to document it?! Fantastic! How are you dealing with the ISO Grainy texture at 5k? I've got a low light wedding coming up at the end of the year and I'm stressing.
The lights flickers because mains electricity is AC which means it turns on and off very fast. But I can't understand why they don't turn on and off at the same time. That is not understandable.
