I love that Haikyuu went into Suga’s story because that’s real life. There’s always gonna be someone better than you and they may even be younger than you but what are you gonna do about it, how are you gonna perceive the situation. Suga is def an overlooked character of the team and isn’t jus a benchwarmer but one of Karasuno’s strongest foundations jus like the other third years.

Sugawara is one of my fave character in Haikyuu. I saw some comments from Blue Lock fans looking down on him. But imo, being ambitious and selfish are EASY. Being KIND is HARDER. Only people with strong heart who can be kind even in heartbreaking moment. It took a lot more courage and strength to be kind and supportive. Sugawara can be resentful to Kageyama (like a certain character LOL), but he CHOSE to be kind and supportive to Kageyama instead. Sugawara is the senpai that Kageyama deserved and always needed but never get until Karasuno.
And Suga is able to balance between being ambitious but not losing his kindness. He and Daichi are the pillars that support their team. The mom and dad to their team. And it's not easy! They are teenagers too. But they chose to carry the responbilities. And they carry it very well.

    • @MagnificentPez
      @MagnificentPez 8 месяцев назад +53

I love both Blue Lock and Haikyu. The mentalities are extremely different, but the general idea is different. Blue Lock's characters aim to be the best ever in a selfish role, but Suga simply wants to enjoy his time on the court because he doesn't aim going above and beyond. Both of them are good mindsets, so people hating on him are ignorant and refusing to see the point.

@@LessonsFromAnime Well, he intended to tell Kageyama that he, Kageyama, should go win it, but changes it to "let's", i.e "let us go win this".
The first wouldn't have included him, or in fact anyone of the team, within the statement. Or in other words he would have placed the wish to go win it only on Kageyama. The second one not only includes the rest of the team, but probably more importantly himself. Because he _is_ part of the team, even if he is "just" the back up Setter, and is up to the team, including Suga to go win it, not just Kageyama.
But i mostly love it because of how it is presented.
The slight ping when he thinks about the original statement, and the slight pause before changing it, is just really good in my opinion

I could be wrong, but I feel like Suga is seen only as "The mother of Karasuno," to many, but he is so much more than that. He stayed optimistic despite the circumstances in the game and his play time. He really carried the team without many really seeing it. Staying positive and looking on the bright side of things makes a big difference in sports because everyone still wants to do their best and go all out to win. This is one reason why Karasuno made it so far. He may still be the mother of the team, but there is more to him than just that.

    • @w1nther930

The thing about Suga is, his actions are simple yet hard. Just as it is hard to be like blue lock and act more selfishly in a team sport out of fear, it can be just as hard to stay positive and try to encourage in a team sport. Way too many times does a team get in a bad situation and no one speaks up, no one tries to motivate others

Suga is wonderful. He deserves all the love. He is Karasuno's vice-captain for a reason, he balances Daichi's leadership out and is the heart and pillar of Karasuno's emotional strength in the way no one else could be on his team. Idc what anyone says, Suga's empathy, kindness, and emotional intelligence was VITAL to Karasuno. If they couldn't do any of this without Daichi, they couldn't do it without Suga either. He was such a good senior, and ESPECIALLY to Kageyama. I will die on the hill that Suga was the first proper senior Kageyama ever had, who showed him how a good senior should treat his underclassman. No one else could have nudged Kageyama into improving the social aspect of his setter skills. It was so interesting to hear from a new perspective in this video too, as I never considered Suga's arc sad at all. Perhaps because he was so action-oriented and didn't spend a lot of time in self-pity but rather carved out his niche in the team wherever and whenever he could. I saw his grace, his selflessness and strength of character that allowed him to willingly step aside for the team despite his own pride, and still willingly nurture and guide Kageyama with absolutely no animosity or resentment, and I thought he was absolutely amazing. He is so inspirational, so mentally strong and unwaveringly kind despite his chaotic tendencies sometimes. When I stepped into a more senior role in my high school clubs, I modelled my behaviour off of him, and I like to think it served me well.

Now that I think about it, I guess the only senior Kageyama had before was Oikawa, who made it very clear he hated him and even went to hit him at one point. Sugawara would have been quite the change for him lol

    • @leenan2345
      @leenan2345 7 месяцев назад +8

@@LessonsFromAnime Lmao I tend to not hold that against Oikawa because it's clear he was horrified that he almost did that, and his feelings of jealousy and imposter syndrome were pretty severe at the time. I know how brutal a feeling that is. But yeah, it doesn't change the fact that it wasn't conducive for their relationship, and he wasn't and couldn't be a good senior to Kageyama. People argue in Iwaizumi's favour about this but I reject that argument as well because... well. Iwaizumi does call Oikawa out for his shit, but he also lets him get away with it a bit before doing that. I can't see him ever having had any significant relationship with Kageyama, not with Oikawa needing his support (and this is not a judgment on either of them, ofc Oikawa needed him then and ofc Iwaizumi would prioritise his best friend over a random kid). So yeah, in my eyes, Suga was the first person to give Kageyama a taste of that senpai-kouhai bond.

Sugawara’s story has always been one of my favorites in Haikyuu. He’s underestimated because he is seemingly overshadowed by Karasuno’s oni. But without Sugawara, Karasuno wouldn’t have been able to change the pace of matches in their eleventh hour. He’s intelligent but no genius, and yet he manages to target the weak spots of the enemy and help his own teammates cover theirs simultaneously. Even though the opponent figures him out eventually, he’s able to guide his teammates into at least a few essential points when they’re backed into the corner. Without him, Karasuno would not have made it to nationals. He has this tenacity because he knows that he is vital in these moments, he wants to fight but he also understands exactly why he is needed. Yet, he treats every rally like it’s match point because he knows how little time he has on the court. Sugawara is amazing.

What's beautiful about Haikyu is the touch of reality. It is not a fairytale story. It shows us that we cannot win without putting in the work, and even so there's still a possibility of losing.
With Suga, his character shows us what being a team player means. Suga is so much more than a pinch server- by watching from the sidelines, he was able to help his team strategize and provide very helpful and methodolical approach on their attacks.
The first years respect him, his Juniors look up to him, and his age group still looks at him as their equal. Suga is a great contributor to Karasuno's success, and his story and part is a breath of fresh air. It shows that you don't need to always be in the battle field to win a war. ❤

Sugawara has always been one of my favorite characters in Haikyuu because I relate to him so much... I, too, am setter and I, too, lost my starting place to a younger and more talented player... And everytime I saw Suga on the sidelines, I was reminded of my struggle and my fight to try to get just a few points on the court. But that experience made me love and appreciate the sport that raised me even more, because God knows how much I appreciate each point I get to play nowadays. Because everyone, all the time, wants just one more point.

I relate so heavily to characters like Sugawara and Tsukishima, seeing people better than me, younger or smaller, and doubting my own skills because of it. "How are they so much better than me?" "What do they have that I don't?" Seeing the character development of suga really put my own doubts into perspective. He's sidelined constantly because Kageyama is just a better setter. Yet even when he's on the bench, he's not useless. Players constantly go to him for advice on the best strategy to use and what to do when they're down on their luck. They respect Suga, even if he isn't the "best".
Sugawara has been my role model for as long as I can remember, his reliance, strategic eye and ability to, even when he's not playing, be one of the most useful players to the court are so admirable for a character that, if it wasn't Sugawara, would just wallow in pity and self-doubt about not being the better setter.

This. This makes me happy. There are actually a handful of episodes in Haikyuu surrounding Suga that I can't watch because they make me so emotional, I relate to them SO much. This idea of being good but not good enough is so rarely executed as perfectly as it was with Suga. That crushing feeling of knowing that you have to step back in order for others to succeed because you aren't enough to bring them further is so hard to capture.
All of those scenes where you see how Suga is really feeling, that reluctant acceptance, giving everything you are to something and getting little in return, of putting aside your feelings to help others were so heavy and so, so well done. I cannot even begin to describe how MUCH his character means to me and how happy it makes me to see videos like this or posts from people who have watched Haikyuu and love it because the appreciation for Suga's character is so evident. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it because I know if Suga was a real person seeing how people love him in the fandom, he wouldn't believe it.

Sugawara was one of my favorite characters from the very beginning simply because of his character. I think for most people, being in Sugawara's position as a setter on the starting lineup, only to have that taken away and getting replace by a first year would make us angry. Instead, Sugawara shows us that while he does want to play, he wants what's best for the team, and he knows that he can't take the team as far as Kageyama can. He is my favorite 3rd year not just because of this, but also because he is genuinely such an incredible person.
He is the one who watches from the sidelines and gives us and the rest of the team off the court the insight into what the rest of the team are doing/ thinking. He puts time aside to help the rest of his team (ie helping Hinata with recieves in the early episodes) and he knows how to bring out the best in people. He even knows what Asahi's favorite set is for cying out loud. He is such a kind person that he doesn't just become a teammate to most of his underclassmen, he becomes a mentor, someone for them to look up to, not to be jealous of, but to admire and learn from.

gosh this hits me. i regretted so much time during my school days. i often think back of those days because i obviously cannot relive them. i'm still hung up on them... because of this its always hurtful to reminiscent them. My situation got worse in college because im more often than not, almost 'made it' to achieving things especially academic-wise.. i know its not good to swim around the past for so long... some days are better currently.. but im at a point in life where i so caught in between wanting to achieve something (to 'made it') and to just take a step back and live ordinarily.

Thank you for the beautiful video!
Sugawara is maybe the most beloved of my favourite haikyu-characters. For me, his character is about showing strenght by being able to set your own ego aside for the good of the team. And he is not even bitter about being not as good as Kageyama (like Oikawa at some time lol), but using this "setback" as motivation to improve, to learn new amazing skills that make him irreplacable on the court, even if it's just for a few ralleys. I love how invested he is in the game, even when he is just at the sidelines, how he cheers and builds his team up and uses his time wisely to observe the opponents. To me, Sugawara proves that you can be an irreplacable part of a team without being the most skilled or the strongest. I am always so happy when he gets to play!

Sugawara is that senpai Kageyama should have had in junior high school. After all, Oikawa is part of why Kageyama has so many insecurities (not the only reason, but still plays a role). Imagine if coming to Karasuno, Kageyama stumbled upon another Oikawa ?

This was an awesome video. Suga is my favourite Haikyuu and anime character of all time same with Oikawa. Suga did a lot of the little things like making the signals, always encouraging his teammates, helping them improve their grades, in Hinata's case receives. Also when he is on the court he brings up his teams morale and make sure he knows where his teammates are at physically, emotionally, and mentally. I love Suga so much so thank you for making this video.❤❤❤❤❤

And this is why I love Suga
I first had an interest in him from the first few episodes, when he said he wouldn't tell on them for secretly using the court and when he offered to set for Hinata.
Then I gained an interest in the other characters too, but as he played into his character more, I realized I really love Sugawara. He'll always be my number 1.

Sugawara is one of the best character in karasuno because nobody exist like him in real life.
I play volley ball and nobody with step aside even if the new comer is a "genius" .. They will fight to keep his position (even destroy mentally the genius and not with performance) that the real life, everybody is selfish..
I see a lot of people come to volley ball because from Haikkyu but theirs are dissapoint it's not Haikkyu it's real life with real person who are focus on themselve. If you fail they destroy you and if you're good, you have to keep progressing for not to be replace. All your so call "friendship" will be destroy the day you show weakness
That the big weakness of Haikkyu make you dream and then hit by the hard truth of life. Theirs is most bad person that good person in this world

  • @NikolaNevenov86

Honestly I didn't remembered Suga's story that much. He's always been that third year that was always standing on the sideline commenting.
To me his arc was always just that of the third years.
They stayed with Karasuno even when there was no one left. In a sense Karasuno's volleyball team was like their baby that they kind of raised from it's infancy ...so to speak. Hinata, Kageyama, Yamaguchi and Tsuki all came when the team was already up on it's feet..somewhat. However the third years were there when it all fell down, and when it was struggling . So to me most of the third year's arc was them just wanting for their team Karasuno to go to the tournament, and them on it. So naturally I saw Suga as just being happy for the chance for his team to qualify and play on the tournament. Also the thing about the three of them being really good friends, and the story just shows us their last year together. And probably because of what they went through in the previous years, made them understood that, and wanted to make most of it together.
However one thing I love about how the story evolves, is what happens to these characters. It was so down to earth and humbling.

Just here to say that Suga-san was the one who suggested to Hinata and Kageyama how to work their dynamic. Saying that Kageyama must adjust his play to Hinata’s abilities. Kageyama took his criticism to his advantage in S1. Suga-san is one of the foundations behind that.

Suga is one of the best examples in anime of a character using prep time and consideration to overcome his inherently weaker ability on the go. Suga is physically weak because he's short and not particularly strong. He's mentally weak in that he shies away from pressure and can't properly think when the going gets tough which leads to him falling behind players with deeper lockers of talent and tools. Nevertheless, he has a genuine passion for the game, has the brainpower to analyze his opponent's weaknesses, and the other-centeredness to make his teammate's jobs easier. Every time he comes on, he reliably boosts Karasuno's point differential using all the plans he's already been preparing, and then once he starts to get figured out he gets subbed off (or it's too late and Karasuno has already won).

My favorite suga moment is when they’re on game point of the kamomedai game and he recommends yamaguchi as the substitute (fully aware that this was likely going to be the last rally of his high school career) and said “if you’re worried about me being a third year, it’s irrelevant.” He really did believe in his team to the very end

In the video, you mention you'd would advise to stay on the time, but you're missing the cultural context of this taking place in Japan.
In Japan, getting into a good college will make or break your career. It's a very serious time and can be extremely competitive. They only get one chance and he's putting himself months of studying behind his competition. It's definitely not as simple as "your grades will be fine". It's an extremely important period of time for these young people.
Just wanted to add that extra context that Western viewers typically wouldn't have.

With the blue lock mindest deeply ingrained in me by now I look down on sugawara. I understand him, but the lack of ambition to do anything to be on the court is somewhat repulsive to me. And that why it's amazing that I can still learn things from person like that - enjoy things, don't focus too much on the problems
And personal anecdote - a 2 hour run is much more painful if you focus on how you'll be able to do it. It's much more fun to be in the moment, appreciating everything about it
