The ultimate wah tone filter example is UFO live Strangers in the night This kids , Mother Mary, Lights Out , Rock Bottom killer classic UFO cool video David 🤘
I liked Michael's playing best in UFO, because, like mentioned, he didn't use the wha wha too much, just every 4 songs or so. Imo, 'Reasons Love' off of 'No heavy Petting' has the best filtered wha tone I've ever heard. The first 4 MSG albums, although having some amazing solo's, suffer from Michael using the wha as a filter nearly 100% of the time........just too nasally sounding. The last McCauly Schenker album ('91 or '92 ?) Along with that "All the way from Memphis" track with Blotzer and T. Gun's, etc was great TONE again from Schenker (he started using jcm 800 (2205) Marshalls with the reissue 25 watt greenbacks), this, along with leaving the wha wha off, gave him a tone similar to his epitome lead tones (Ufo's 'Obsession'). I like nearly everthing he has put out since the early '90's, with Ufo's 'Walk on Water' ('95) and MSG's 'Written in the Sand' ('96) being favorites.
I stole it from Mick Ronson, by way of Randy Rhoads and I’ve always used it to add just a little something extra. Usually when playing a single note line or solo of some sort. Great video, Dave!
Tom Schultz should have been near the top of your list he had the tech knowledge to wire a wah filter into his amp his sound has parked wah all over it. Got to love that Boston sound!
Randy Rhoads used wah so great, especially in outro’s from the song “Tonight”, “You can’t kill rock and roll”. His tone in spots seemed to have that wah sweet spot too on Blizzard of Oz….
Thanks David, great playing ❤️ To me it sounds like a good tubescreamer (tone 1o'clock)... What are the differences? Also, what did you mean with "compression" (did you use EP booster as compression or was the compression pedal separate) and was it last in the chain?
That’s a killer riff David. I have a Wah pedal similar to a Dunlop Cry Baby. I believe it’s a Thomas Organ Cry Baby. I need to try this technique next time I jam on my guitar. Michael Schenker is on my top 10 list of favorite guitarists. Thanks for this video lesson David. 🎸🤘🏼👍🏻
Randy Rhoads played with his wah slightly open also. for da tone. granted I making this comment before watching, so u may have, i dont know, mentioned.. lol
Hey man the old school way without all that high-tech,fake noise they call music is not at all the way it was meant to be by the greats,,,, old school technique,, playability, learning how to use your gear to get your own distinct sound definitely. Sounds good man . Keep Rollin
Who used the wah wah pedal first on guitar? I believe the first famous guitarist to use a wah pedal was Frank Zappa soon after it was invented in 1966. I am sure there would have been a person, guitarist or tech that tested the wah pedal when the proto type was built sometime in 1960s
Weird I was just listening to UFO for the last couple days and I see you put this out! He highlighted the best tones and so much heavier than he is given credit for as a player.
Love this lesson !!! Maybe it's just me , but I think that you should completely flesh that opening jamb out and make it a whole song !!! I really enjoyed that !!! Please , Dave !? Thanks
My long time friend Tom Bukovac slowly sweeps it up and back to do fakey Who sounds imitating the keyboard part for baba o Reilly. I seen Smashmouth doing good Van Halen covers well , and the guitar player was doing a fake phase 90 slow sweep sounding like Edward .
Michael definitely introduced me to that wah/tone filter thing. Also, Alex Lifeson on ByTor & the Snow Dog solo has that slow sweeping wah thing during the solo. That Behringer delivers some good sounds!!
Great Channel...There's a great guitarist from Canada...Who is criminally underrated...His name is Kim Mitchell...He was shredding out around the same time as Al Di Meola was in the mid 70's in a band called Max Webster...One of his stand out full on guitar assaults is a song from his band Max Webster called...In the World of Giants...from the album...Universal Juveniles...Max Webster is...IMO...A mixture of progressive and avant-garde music much like Zappa, King Crimson, Return to Forever, Yes, and Genesis...I hope you do a lesson on such an underrated Canadian Icon...Thanks 😊
I remember talking with Jeff Martin of Racer X , he told me the story of how Michaels now ex wife took off back to her foreign country with their kid and sold a bunch of his gear when he was recording . He checked into a motel and found jesus. Rev Jones played bass for Michael, told me stories of his bi polar craziness . Ha . Page and Hendrix didn't sweep the range, Hendrix left it cocked at Woodstock and Fillmore in many sections .
I always used a Morley power wah for this, the on off switch was on the side so you could position the pedal in the sweet spot and kick it in and out with the switch
Kirk Hammett, Tom Morello and Jimmy Page are good reasons to bail on this technique and this lesson. Mick Ronson and Michael Schenker might be reasons to stay.
Schenker is king. I have to go along with the people who love the Strangers tone. I do think there was some studio sweetening to take away some of the less awesome aspects of the wah tone filter trick. These days I use a Rangemaster to do that trick

The lab series L7 amp had a single knob that did this. Like a parametric eq.
Tom Schultz should have been near the top of your list he had the tech knowledge to wire a wah filter into his amp his sound has parked wah all over it. Got to love that Boston sound!
Very sick intro jam, you have some of the best lesson content on RUclips my dude. Rock on brother 🤘🏻
Randy Rhoads used wah so great, especially in outro’s from the song “Tonight”, “You can’t kill rock and roll”. His tone in spots seemed to have that wah sweet spot too on Blizzard of Oz….
Hell yeah! I also love when "Flying High Again" comes in. One of my all time favorite guitar tones.
Always thought that Brian "Robbo" Robertson has tasty use of the Wah.
Mick Ronson did it, it was part of his signature sound/tone. Cool vid!
Thanks David, great playing ❤️
To me it sounds like a good tubescreamer (tone 1o'clock)... What are the differences?
Also, what did you mean with "compression" (did you use EP booster as compression or was the compression pedal separate) and was it last in the chain?
Mark Knopfler, money for nothing stands out for me! great lesson
I think Kirk Hammett wears his whah as a shoe😂
😅😮🎉😂😊
Lights out lights out in London great wah sound live ufo1979
Opening jam could be a new Maiden song. Just add a galloping section next
Sykes also does this a lot as well. Great stuff, man!
I think Zappa used a wah like this early on.
23 , Frank Marino
What about Gilda Radner as Babwah Wah Wah?
Do this a lot. Got it from Zappa.
Same. I do it a lot and got it from Zappa.
Shenkers One Night at Budakan. He was really constantly using the wah cocked or moving the sweep
I do this. It’s an always on thing for me. My setup does allow me to mix the dry and wah sound so it does not have to be 100%. But I love the tone.
Run your wah in parallel after fuzz. Reduce wah volume by half. Lead sound on Santana's first album.
Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles is also using the wah in the same way !!
I always wondered how he got that sound. Mystery solved. Thanks so much.
I learnt it watching Tony Joe White live in Australia..epic!
Check out Crack the Window or Steamy windows riff..same deal👌
That’s a killer riff David. I have a Wah pedal similar to a Dunlop Cry Baby. I believe it’s a Thomas Organ Cry Baby. I need to try this technique next time I jam on my guitar. Michael Schenker is on my top 10 list of favorite guitarists. Thanks for this video lesson David. 🎸🤘🏼👍🏻
Check out Helios Creed.
Doctor, doctor please help me cos I'm rock bottom.....😊
I've been using the wah as tone filter since I saw Schenker with UFO and had to get that tone. Thanks Dave!
shabby rd like the old podcast. the shabby road record show? fun show.
The guy from Loverboy did this also. It's in one of your Guitar Player mags I believe.
Randy Rhoads played with his wah slightly open also. for da tone. granted I making this comment before watching, so u may have, i dont know, mentioned.. lol

The Wah pedal was originally invented to be used with the Thomas Organ.
Eric Clapton - “Tales Of Brave Ulysses” early guitar use 👍

I use the Fulltone Wah- Ful for my cocked wah tone.
Randy Rhoads certainly did it. Live for sure and some studio. You Can't Kill Rock and Roll comes to mind. Several classic pics of his foot on the wah.
I use a Dunlop Q-zone for fixed wah sounds .
Great pedal
Thin Lizzy used this all the time
Also Gary Richrath..
great video as usual. the player that always comes to mind for me in this regard is Uli. A good example is the Scorpions, Virgin Killer album.
For years i used a Shaller wha pedal the switch said bow or yoyo on it there old from the 70's and i used it on all my solos back then cheers !
Xotic pedals are so good, and their Guitars look amazing.
Great video. Definitely a good tool to have if you need to cut into the mix on the fly. Great opening Btw🤘
Superb stuff.

Vai did too.
Brilliant - Schenker is one of my favourites! Marty Friedman employs a Maxon AF-9 Auto Filter pedal to get a similar fixed wah tone.
Awesome video, and very eye opening. I never realized so many players used the cocked wah as filter.
I always used a Morley power wah for this, the on off switch was on the side so you could position the pedal in the sweet spot and kick it in and out with the switch
ZAPPA.
Kirk Hammett, Tom Morello and Jimmy Page are good reasons to bail on this technique and this lesson.
Mick Ronson and Michael Schenker might be reasons to stay.
I love this Chanel but haven’t received updates for months. Either you haven’t posted or RUclips is a Richard.
Really cool shredding, Dave! Liked the tone and explanation.
You can really play…
john norum and michael amott use the wah very nicely as well.
Long ago, when I heard the epic guitar on the song Sweet Jane, I knew that excellent tone comes from a cocked wah.
Which version? There's been so many excellent renditions.
I meant to type wont get fooled again Bukovac did a fakey of . The end of the song modulating keyboard part
It's what Hendrix did all the time to cut , to cut thru a fuzz face that's on or just in general . Page did also alot .
Tommy Shaw really pops the sound on Blue Collar Man with a half-cocked tone.
First in! Great topic for a lesson. Diving in right now. 🔥
Excellent lesson.

Daaaaaaammnn!!!!!! Dave your a legendary badass guitarist as well!!!
Yes I think Mick Box from Uriah Heep favored it also.
please stop saying "Basically" " Literally" over and over dude
Can the same tonal quality be achieved using a GE-7?
My favorite song from one of my very favorite bands. Please please please do a tutorial!
DAVID!!! incredible
Miss you man!
I figured this would be a Mick Ronson episode😊.
Early Judas Priest is cocked wah tone at its most obvious.
I have two broken Cry Babys. Time to get one of them fixed!
Sweet! 😃
Schenker popularized this, so many since have emulated or tired to copy his tone
Really nice chops man!
How does it respond to single coils?
Some nice usage tips! I've been using a wah as a filter for years, it's one of my favorite lead effect. 👍
@3:50 KATH and ZAPPA (Mu-Tron III__ZVEX OOH WAH) made Ā living utilizing this technique! Thank You David.
