I love how you don't use loads of gain - many make that mistake when covering Van Halen. You're absolutely right - you need that clear, tight sound in order for the licks to sound right...
Very much the same thing with Angus and Malcom Young. Those ripping AC/DC riffs don't have as much gain as you think. There's no way you'd hear the chord changes as intended if there was heaps of gain.
@@jnh73 Yes! Spot on. I'll admit when I was first starting guitar, I heard those HUGE sounding riffs and thought there were heaps of gain, so when I'd go to play those riffs, it'd sound like a mess! Hell yes, this couldn't have come at a better time! It's amazing that you're getting these great tones through Amplitube. You've really got a gift for tone. You truly do. The only thing I've been able to dial up worth a damn is Neural DSP's plugins. So, I presume you're plugged into an audio interface and your computer is capturing this sound directly for your videos? But what speakers are you using to hear it live while you play? I mean, we're not really hearing exactly what you hear while you're playing live. That's what I want to see: videos that show how you do what you do. What studio monitors do you use? What interface? What multi-track software? What video editing programs? That's the stuff I want to know, and I'm sure I'm far from alone.
How do you get such smooth highs? I try Evh or 5150 models and even plexis and the sound is always so fizzy. What cab or speaker style are you using? What mic or mic placements?
I just did this on my fender mustang GT100. 7 band equinox pedal with mids and gain boosted into a plexi with plate reverb, done. Even with single coils it sounds fat, clear, and loads of harmonics.
You can only get so far with all digital.. and it becomes more and more apparent the louder it gets vs native tubes where the sound gets better with increasing volume
That was true back when simulators and solid states were first emerging, but nowadays, it's virtually indistinguishable imo. Although the novelty of having a FAT stack moving loads of air will never die.
Nice video with good advice. A lot of players used eq to get good tone back in the day. I know I did. I had a hell of a time getting my Marshall Super Lead to sound the way I wanted. It was very loud & mostly clean. Eddie VH, Randy Rhoads, Tom Scholz all used MXR eq's before the amp.
Maybe later on, but early on Eddie had a Variac voltage regulator plugged into his Plexi and turned down to 90 volts. Guitar was plugged into that. His Plexi was actually used as a pre Amp with his pedals in between that and an H&H power Amp. That was plugged into 2 cabinets, one with JBLs and the other with Celestion greenbacks. There was other stuff somewhere in the rig set up, like ohm regulators and a couple of other things I can't remember. Eddie spent hundreds of hours playing around to get the rig set up and tone the way he wanted, and he continued to tinker with the tone for the rest of his days. He never got far from the original tone, though.

I agree that you need tone close to the original to get that proper feel. For example, I use a lot more gain, so to get the hammer ons from nowhere to sound a lot better, I have to strike the last last note that would typically be a hammer on (typically the G string). Since I start with a pick upstroke, it's very simple to use a downstroke for the last note.

Hey, Tom! Amazing video! Have you considered doing one for Yngwie's tone on amplitude? It'd really help a lot, as it is the only ampsim I have... Thank you for your great content, beast! 🤘🏻
Respectfully, listen to Top Jimi, Pete Thorn or Jim Gaustad. This tone is ballpark but not really that close to the isolated track tone. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Great video. Most people try to get early Ed tone from a plug in by decreasing the gain and increasing the reverb. There isn't a plug in out there that gives the proper plexi mid range bite found in a real plexi 1968 super lead. It's something that can't be Eq'd into a tone. Until they can tone clone a Marshall like Ed's, that tone will never be spot on with present day technology.
I think the only signature tone I'd put above the brown sound is Eric Johnson's tone I've got both artist courses, they're absolutely terrific Would an Eric Johnson course be on the horizon one day??? 👀
It cracks me seeing that tiny 8 year old kid playing ej Cliffs. I actually learned something from him. I got into learing ej very early on my guitar teacher had unreal ear. Every body was wrong. When the main g chord signature with Arpeggios part . But my teacher nailed it. But. Is very hard to play that stretch right I don’t see anyone doing exact . Then I saw that 8 yo Chinese kid. wtf doing it. But his cheater way sounded super close and a lot easier.
Hmm, I've got amplitube and it doesn't sound anything like that through the same amp on the same settings. Its also noisy as hell. I wonder if the audio interface is the issue? None of the audio guitar rig plugins I've tried ever sound natural and always sound a bit too weak to me (neural dsp ones I've tried). I can't see how the audio interface would be the issue though, I mean its just an AD converter at the end of the day.
Hello Tom. I’m in a VH tribute band on east coast. All looking to improve my tone. You nailed it. You need tone to be like artist your emulating to respond effectively. Would you mind helping me on just a couple aspects on his tone please. Thank you
super cool...stacking EQ's...woulda thunk? Like the other guy who stack's or "slaves" Bandmaster & Marshall heads, the tones are AMAZING. Any chance you could do a short on the "solo" thingy at the beginning of "Fools"?
@@steveinmidtown The "solo" at the beginning of fools (after the power chords) is really difficult to pick out due to Ed's guitar being kinda buried in the mix at that point, not to mention he's heavily palm muting at points, making the notes difficult to hear. It's one of the few Ed solos that I believe is nigh on impossible to get perfectly (or close to perfect). That being said, Jim Gaustad does an excellent job at capturing the essence of this solo in the WACF entry of his "Quest for the Brown Sound" series.

There isn't a plug in out there that gives the proper plexi mid range bite found in a real plexi 1968 super lead. It's something that can't be Eq'd into a tone. Until they can tone clone a Marshall like Ed's, that tone will never be spot on with present day technology.
Could you teach a tone lesson on Van Halen 2 album? I'm very impressed with this video!!
Thanks.
Great info !!
Your tone sounds great. I set mine up just like you have it and it sounds incredibly weak. Im running amplitube 5 standalone
Yo Tom, what about the rest of the pedal types and settings...oh and the cab set up and rack effects?
you didnt show the speaker settings or all those effects you have after the mixer
Sounds exactly like it holy shit!!!!
Thanks for the awesome playing! Maybe at some point you do some Randy rhoads that would be pretty cool
I'd love more in depth tone videos
Hi there! How to get this rig?
So you're using TWO different EQ pedals in series in FRONT of the marshall plexi?
So.. in theory, this should work in the real world with amps too?
Is it amplitude 5? Are your patches available for download?
so you think he eq'd before the other pedals?
Whats that black pedal in the chain?
The video you made on Eddie's amp tones was awesome! MORE! Please!
Greatness!
The Regen knob on the vintage MXR Flanger should be all the way up.
Awesome tone! I don't understand the difference between using a second eq and cutting this band on the 10 band eq
What os the frequency removed on the blue eq, is it 200?
Yep!
I think the only signature tone I'd put above the brown sound is Eric Johnson's tone
I've got both artist courses, they're absolutely terrific
Would an Eric Johnson course be on the horizon one day??? 👀
I'm sure that will be possible. If one can play malmsteen, EJ is similar in terms of picking rules.
Flubtown is a beautiful place
Hey Tom Can You Do A Video Of Step By Step Doing Your Presets Im Definitely Have Trouble Thanks
can i do this on the free version? also. what version is he using?
Hmm, I've got amplitube and it doesn't sound anything like that through the same amp on the same settings. Its also noisy as hell. I wonder if the audio interface is the issue? None of the audio guitar rig plugins I've tried ever sound natural and always sound a bit too weak to me (neural dsp ones I've tried). I can't see how the audio interface would be the issue though, I mean its just an AD converter at the end of the day.
If you want to go down a rabbit hole, look up input gain settings and Amplitube.
Does EVH use EQ back then or he just tweak his amp drastically (and mod it as well) then eventually arrived at his tone?
Many thanks for this useful video. But what about the other pedals i see on the right of the amp?
Hey Tom! Great video. What are the pedals that you have after the amp in the chain? I see three of them but cant tell what they
are. Thank you.
Hello Tom. I’m in a VH tribute band on east coast. All looking to improve my tone. You nailed it. You need tone to be like artist your emulating to respond effectively. Would you mind helping me on just a couple aspects on his tone please.
Thank you
Is that the same Amplitude that comes with the Tonex One? I think it is Amplitude 5 or SE.
Amplitube 5 MAX v2 🎸😎🤘
super cool...stacking EQ's...woulda thunk?
@@jordanrussell-howard9491 appreciate the reply! Have the "Swedish Shred Secrets" which will give me 30 years of learning Yngwie's stuff...super pissed he put the hammer down on your site...he can seem pretty cool & also the biggest asshole on the planet. As far as the Fools thing, I've had the "Cherry Lane" green TAB book that we all have & that transcription seems good enough but it lacks your approach with pick attack, angle, what notes are picked vs legato...blah blah blah. I follow Gustad, Garber, Horn, Martin & others but your stuff is by far the best produced & makes learning doable. Cheers!
@@steveinmidtown I believe you meant that message for Tom, not me... lol. Anyway, the famous "Cherry Lane" TAB book is probably a good start, I agree. All those guys you mentioned are superb for the VH stuff, too.
Can you get the same tone out of the helix?
