I love soldering 👍 I learnt how at a company that made satellite antennas and every actuator you solder had to be tested and depending on solder job would pass or fail and I got better than the boss 👍 hahah Hand eye coordination is what it's all about!
It was mentioned that there is a lack of soldering teams to get the ESC out in complete form. I used to solder speed controllers for my planes just about that exact same way, and can do a pretty clean job. Had some recent ankle surgery so will be laid up for a little while, building and re-building crawlers and other RC stuff. I use a digital ST-2090D Merece soldering iron. If the expense of shipping and silver solder was covered, I would gladly do the work. Will be a few months before I'm up and walking again. Figure 6-10 units per hour, potentially 60-100 units per day, a little over a week could have 1000 or so complete. Just an idea if you would like the help.
Had 1 in the cart this morning, then at checkout I realized I didn't have the wire kit. Went back and got the wire kit in the cart and went to checkout and they where sold out. Closest I have been to getting any of the crawlmasters esc's!
I love the bare board idea. I would preffer to order one like that when more are available. Personally I will use hellfire before heat shrinking the board
I solder bridged an old Novak a tiny bit way bitd, because all I had was a crap weller 30-watt iron. The ESC still worked great, but it would catch on fire after a couple of minutes and I'd have to blow it out. lmao It still works to this day! :D I feel like in the last year or two our beards have started racing to see who gets 100% grey first. 🤣
What do you think of adding some silicon conformal coating before applying the heat shrink? Obviously it takes more time and wouldn't fit the video format. Also, it seemed the power cap leg was hanging over the servo ground pin. Would you recommend routing it slightly more out of the way, or add a dab of liquid electrical tape, some actual tape, or even the usual black heat shrink on the leg to prevent issues? (You know, when you're tight on space and you need to squeeze the ESC into that tiny corner in your rig... :))
Conformal is a great idea. The leg has plenty of room, but that is a concern. Later board revisions will have dedicated pads for the cap. It's really not needed but I would rather be cautious at first.
I have a direct power 16v servo and this exact esc kit and wiring kit. Will I still need to install a bec since you have the receiver wire included in the kit?
Got mine and glad I did. At low speed quite as can be. Gets a little mouthy with speed but it is a crawl master so all good. What kind of heat should I be expecting. 1800kv relover on 3s. 15t 48 p. Element ecto. Seems like I traded noise for heat motor gets hot 🥵.
The Ontario government had an ad about getting more people into the trades, and it had a lady holding the hot end of a soldering iron pretending to solder a board. It was a classic.
Blue tac is a great way to hold things in place when soldering, cheap and handy! Also a ts100/pinecil will do this without issue but I wouldn't try the smaller ts80 etc
@@chevyon37s Thanks Drew I ask John this question 2 years ago on one of his videos on soldering and never got a response...great information i will use this a a standard moving forward...what about 14 series and 15 series motor tabs got information here...Thank again...LOL tell John love Homes Hobbies stuff...
So, I finally got around to doing this and have never soldered anything to a pcb before (only battery connectors I have soldered). I followed this step by step and to my surprise it worked perfectly! I am an idiot though and totally didn’t cut down the wires to size and now have a birds nest of wires in my rig smh
Great video. I have a question! I have a dual motor crawler with those small jst connectors from the motors and I just bought an upgraded servo with 4mm bullet connectors. The wire size is different, how should I approach this situation? Is it safe to connect small wires to large ones if the small wire is the motor? Please advise 🙏
Unfortunately this is the problem with supply and demand. The crawler community knows that HH trinkets are the best but there are just too many of us that want the good stuff. Those of you good at golf and riding bikes please start doing that more.
hey john love your stuff and huge fan of the stubby for my crawler's....any chance of the dream combo esc on the motor? been playing with space and weight savings its been fun with the hobbywing stuff and spectrum....maybe even some FOC to spice it up for old trigger fingers? only reason I have tried these other motors over the stubby or crawl master has been my goal to move everything low as I can go and cutting weight at any rate I can. could be a game changer....
I just order mine, can’t wait to get it installed into my comp crawler, i have the v1 in it and it was an amazing. Question i have is, can i put a few coat of waterproofing on this after soldering its done?
Will this esc power the big 540 revolvers silently? I'm looking to upgrade my trx 4 for a video and am on the fence on what motor to go with. I love the power of the revolvers, not so much the sound.
Hi. My name is Jacopo and I need help. I just completed the assembly of my crawler with esc crawlermaste v2 and 1800kw v3 revolver engine. At the first connection of the battery the green LED turned on and the classic blep was heard, operating the accelerator everything responded perfectly, but after a few moments the engine began to vibrate and then stopped and no longer gave signs of life. Now reconnecting the battery the green LED lights up but you can no longer hear the blep and the engine seems dead. Can you help me solve it? Thanks a lot
Hey John. Would the esc run my 30-35 pound BC8 Mammoth? Currently I'm running a 1000kv Revolver and I have two SHV800's for steering and then there's a cheap servo for the 2-speed shifting. I'm assuming it's a long shot because I beat on it like a rock crawler and occasionally pull a wagon with a really heavy load(well over a hundred pounds and through grass).
You need to do some kind of lottery thing on who gets those bud....I am way to old and to slow to grab one....😥 just haft to wait till you catch up on demand if I don't bump off first 😨
I posted it on the Facebook Holmes Hobbies fan page the issues that I’m having with my Crawlmaster mini V2 I purchased five of these because when they go out of stock it is very difficult to get them and I did not want to miss out however two of the three that I have soldered up do not work I get a consistent beeping and it keeps looping Justin had said in an email that they’re working on getting more however I still see they are still for sale I don’t know why the people cannot get taken care of who have already purchased the items I doubt it is anything that is in my controller or my receiver as one of them works just fine maybe this product was released too soon or maybe it’s manufacturers fault still love all the products this is being a failure point that I think needs to be addressed…
I would add an extra step before the heatshrink , and while some use the board ready conforming liquid, I usually go for 5 minute 2 part epoxy liquid mix and cover everything. Where I drive is too much probability of getting things wet so I just doze everything and connectors with epoxy. With the added advantage that it holds up and strengthens the soldering and flapping cables and ensures insulation in case that capacitator ends up moving a leg and short circuits something. Oh well anyway getting Holmes hobbies esc in Europe is close to impossible anyway, at most a motor if you search well, and buying one from the usa costs more in customs and shipping than the actual item itself which is really discouraging, and a buggin bummer Take care anyway, peace✌
What kinda of super computer do you have to have to get one of these, got one in my cart Friday at 10pm est sharp and before I could pay, order didn’t process, due to selling out that fast!!!😡🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😭
Live clock and refreshing every few seconds. And being familiar with their one page checkout process. Was able to snag one on the evening run. Gotta be super quick.
The trimmed beard looks so much better 🙌 Feeling very lucky I managed to buy a Crawlmaster ESC this morning 🍀
Thanks for sending my V2 replacement for my V1. It’s working great. Now if I could just drive better.
John you trimmed up 😱 you still look beautiful was digging the winter coat 👍✌️

Great job showing the steps! Easy as 1 2 3
Great instructional video.
thank you john with your video I was able to wire my esc and I'd say I did a decent job. gonna buy another.
So glad to see this! Picked up a crawlmaster esc board this morning.
Look at those wire pads...even I with my elephant fingers can solder them...awesome....and caps are always needed😉

Saw the wire kit on the website yesterday. I'm heading there now to see what up. Have a good one
And thanks.

Thanks for the informative video 🙏🙏🙏
ts100 with a thick tip works just fine. been building drones and crawlers since 2012
I have a direct power 16v servo and this exact esc kit and wiring kit. Will I still need to install a bec since you have the receiver wire included in the kit?
WOW at 3 minutes (was there then gone) after the hour sold out again. BUMMER! Guess we must have penitence!

Great to hear temps used when soldering. I tend to use a little more heat 500 to 525C.
500-525°C is way too hot. Too much heat transfer to the board with temps like that.

Should I be seeing any type of heat issues after two or three minutes of use running the team spec revolver on 3S straight axles 56/11 ?

your off to a good start!
I was told by the seller of a popular ESC on FB (not Holmes of course) that if you solder on an ESC it will no longer work! lol For real.
Definitely not true. I repair esc's quite often. Including things like castle XLX2
@@thefunstuff6121 It was utter nonsense of course. He just didn't want to give me my money back.
Do you have any recommendations on making this water resistant? I just want to be able to clean my rig without pulling off the electronics
Hi John I need help with my mini esc please its install in my Basecamp rig but it's overheating even at stand still???

Does it matter if I solder the jst cable directly to the esc pos and neg or should it be to the connector like in this video?
Awesome!!!
Is there a wiring diagram some where for a new be.
Nice!
But I’m bummed there won’t be a pick n place tuning video😎
i hope to be able to get one! need to be fast when they come out
Hi John, is it possible to solder JST wires to the power pads on the back of the board?
Yep, no prob
@HolmesHobbies cheers mate, thanks for taking the time to reply
if I had a place to stay . I'd come work for ya man. I'm sure you hear it alot though.

Is mt60 connector valid alternative option for 4mm bullets?

1000kv doesn't ask much amperage. It would probably be fine.

Surprised you don't have a helping hands tool - I hate soldering with out mine.

We have plenty in warehouse and will be sure customers are taken care of. I'll be soldering and pretesting extras this week for customers with issues.
Does it matter what side the rx wires are soldered onto
Dose a copperhead 10 need cap pack
Damn I missed them again :(
Seriously. I have been refreshing the page for 30 hours. Slept 4 hours all night getting up every 2 hours.
Still missed it. 😐

Ts100 works fine, just do the firmware mod so you can get more heat.

Nah, just a lot of people hitting refresh.
