I had a brushed motor get full of sand and lock up i just pulled it out popped endbell off and blew all the sand out with wd40 and it worked just fine afterwards
Thank you John! I love my revolver, such a fine piece! The noise... takes me back to being in a dentist chair!! It took awhile to get used to it and it’s my favorite motor! No pain!!
You know I love my Revolvers! Many complain about the noise...for me it's a grand opportunity to educate those interested on exactly what it is they are hearing and why I'm such a fan.
Thank you John!! I think it's really great, as busy as you are (you DO run a Company!!), you always take the time to do these Videos for US! Everyone should thank you.... To this day, I have never had a Sensored Motor. 😱 Only reason, I'm that poor! 😢 I have only TWO Sensorless Brushless Motors, one being a HH Revolver. GAWD the Noise!! 😵 But, it's got smoother starts and stops than almost any Brushed Motor. (In my limited experience in Scalers) One Brushed Motor I think is SMOOTHER? *Yours!!* 👍👍 It's an older 30 Turn Handwound. It's been through about 10 sets of Brushes, I've polished the Comm several times, and Turned it once - I over *4 Years!!!* It's literally the most satisfied I've ever been with a RC Motor! Seriously. I hope Holmes Hobbies doesn't phase out Brushed Motors. Now, I live in Southern Arizona, and my Rigs have NEVER gotten Wet! That may have improved my results. With the little money I have to spend in this Hobby, as much as possible, I will always purchase Holmes Hobbies Products!! I fought for this Country, I'm damn sure going to support it whenever I can. Your Company is a fine example of American Pride, Craftsmanship, Quality, and good Old Fashioned great Customer Service!!! 👏👏👏🏆 ....... Maybe someday I'll be able to try a good Sensored Brushless System. I hope so. Merry Christmas to you and your Family! Carmine 💥 ⛽
Excellent video! I appreciate you taking the time to educate your customers (or future customers!), it's always good to see companies sharing their knowledge and experience.
I live the sound of the revolver. Cant wait to get one. Just upgraded to brushless. And went with mamba x with castle. But definetly want one of yours.
Just ordered and received the devolver motor. Can’t wait to get the esc. I forgot to order the bullet connectors soldered on it just for the fact that I was stupidly excited to get one. I logged back in to order another one with the bullets and they were sold out. Either I got the last one or close to it.
As usual I'm impressed, & we get what we pay for thanks, personally never got into the nuts & bolts of how things actually work, got into the hobby in '08, ish, first model was a Axial AX10 Scorpion, so that's where my head is & thanks again
Could you go into a little more detail on how the number of poles factors in. With regards to how we use these in our hobby. Would having more poles always be better? Or are there situations where less poles are more important? And do the benefits related to the number of poles apply for brushed as well as brushless?
It's a pretty complicated subject, there is no easy correlation to performance unless we "fix" other aspects or specify an RPM range. Brushed or brushless, the same problems occur. We could (and do) make a two pole start up as smooth as a four pole, we could make a two pole have as much power, etc... But, the four pole is typically the best balance of cost, engineering difficulty, and performance for RC cars because of the RPM ranges that we need. Go higher pole, power density suffers due to cross sectional constraints and RPM range is limited due to steel losses. Go lower pole, and startup smoothness typically suffers if we want to make them high power. I'll try to make an in depth video on the subject one day, but it's a very deep rabbit hole.
Thanks fur the reply. I see how that could get deep. I was just curious if there was a generally accepted "rule of thumb" like more poles = better. I understand enough of what you said to see that realistically you simply aim for the most efficient compromise/balance that fits your needs and budget. Thanks for the response I appreciate it👍👍
Thanks John I really enjoy being educated and your products because of your business and production my hobby went from fun to bad ass thanks John happy holidays....✌
THANK YOU for explaining brushless motor details. I have a followup question though; recently I purchased a Reedy motor (Strongly recommended by my LHS) and on the back there is a series of numbers/increments and a rotatable pointer. I know it has something to do with timing but could you explain its purpose further in a future video?
Another great video. JRH I'd really like to see you do a video on teardown and amp timing on a team puller 500 & 400 motor for lowest amp draw. If you already have a video on timing of 400 & 500 team puller motors can you post a link? I've learned a lot from your other brushed rebuilding and timing of 540 motors (crawlmasters). Thanks.
Nice vids John Holmes:) I got a quick question hope you can help me..I'm planning to get axial honcho 2..I know its brushed motor on it I would like to ask if I can change it to BL motor in the future ( less maintenance ) that still run or crawl on rock, dirt for a guy loves trailing? Btw I'm newbie and the brand's available only in my country most are China brands. Maybe there's similar specification that match to a branded ones. Appreciate your help...
A complicated subject. 6 slot would typically have higher torque density and worse startup, but 12 slot can actually have a torque edge with better startup due to winding "end turn" length and single layer pattern that yeilds lower IR for any given KV. Depends more on the stator and magnet shape than the simple theory can account for.
What’s the difference with ordering your puller pro with the zero degree timing for reverse rotation and without it? What timing does it come from normally? I bought mine from a hobby shop and the timing is in the middle of the hash marks.
i rock my stubby revolver in my willys 1953 wagon. the sound is off the hook. it bothers others crawling with me at first, but it sounds like a turbo to most others.
Man I picked up a few low voltage 120 size brushed motor from my work. Found several in other things that were made in Germany. The other Taiwan. The German ones were so much smoother and efficient its ridiculous
So are brushless motors just rated in KV or do they have Turn ratings as well? You explain things so idiots like me can understand, but trying to pick a motor and doing research on them can confuse old farts like me pretty easily. Most guys I know who crawl and run your motors love them. However I havent been able to chat with anyone using your Puller Pro R for drag racing as you recommended for me to use in a previous post. The guys I'm running against are running anywhere from a 2.5 to 4.5 turn motors in their Street Eliminator cars. I'm different and want to run your motors but I want to be consistent and fast. With all of that said can you elaborate here or in another video as to what turn is and how it equates to KV and that happy place where all facets equal consistency, speed and power. Maybe I didn't read it right but what turn is the 540 Puller Pro R?
Have you ever encountered a motor issue while on the trail? What did you do to troubleshoot it?
I had a brushed motor get full of sand and lock up i just pulled it out popped endbell off and blew all the sand out with wd40 and it worked just fine afterwards
yes, overheated. went home, did some research, ordered a different motor
The dabbed for a pointer has me dead 😂😂😂 love to see it 🤘🏽
Rocking the calculator watch! Throwing it back to the 80's...nice! Good video.
Wife gave it to me, best gift ever!
Thank you John! I love my revolver, such a fine piece! The noise... takes me back to being in a dentist chair!! It took awhile to get used to it and it’s my favorite motor! No pain!!

I am working with Castle on a low noise switching scheme. That way, at least there is a choice.
Thank you John!! I think it's really great, as busy as you are (you DO run a Company!!), you always take the time to do these Videos for US! Everyone should thank you....

Thank you. John, for educating me so I now realize how little I know about electric motors.
Excellent video! I appreciate you taking the time to educate your customers (or future customers!), it's always good to see companies sharing their knowledge and experience.
Thank you very much for the wonderful information.
Nice glass pointer!!
Great info John, enjoyed watching. Thanks!
Excellent!
Nice overview. Much appreciated.
I live the sound of the revolver. Cant wait to get one. Just upgraded to brushless. And went with mamba x with castle. But definetly want one of yours.
Great information in this video as usual 👍 you have a good holiday 🎄🇺🇸
Awesome video if you could can u do a video like this on esc's i have always been curious about what makes them work
Always enjoy your videos bud 👍merry Christmas🎥
great info john, thank you.
Great video!
Great Info John! Love my Puller Pro and Brushed Trailmasters!

I love the 2700kv trail master pro
I love the performance but that noise is brutal of the revolver. 👍
Thanks John I really enjoy being educated and your products because of your business and production my hobby went from fun to bad ass thanks John happy holidays....✌
Awesome! It's hard to replace the nice feel of a quality motor.

Have you done a video on what the KV count means and how it relates to speed and power?
Great video !!!
I have a 2200 6s and the front bearing went out. It took about a month but Traxxas warrantied it .

could you explain the differences between a 4 pole 6 slot and 12 slot brushless motor? rpm, efficiency, torque, heat?

Please let me know what the amp rating is on the SW4.

Brushless? We don't offer timing adjustments on Brushless when ordered. It should be about 12 degrees factory.
Why are Hobbywing sensored motors/ESC not compatible with other Sensored Motors/ESC? Other Thant the different plug/cable.
i rock my stubby revolver in my willys 1953 wagon. the sound is off the hook. it bothers others crawling with me at first, but it sounds like a turbo to most others.

You should talk about timing
He has a video on timing

Yes I want a revolver for my trx4
