@Phillip Darwin i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Still rocking my Crawlmaster pro 13t in 2022 when everyone is going brushless. Every few hours of runtime I pull off the end bell, inspect the brushes, remove the bearing and spray out all the dirt and copper with electric cleaner. I also use a alcohol Q-tip to clean the commutator. I love doing maintenance on my rigs.
Started with the sport got and expert loved it, then a pro and finally got a magnum and yeah hand wound is the way to go and the magnum just feels so much better, I don't do comps but I love to run good stuff and these are the best out there I've pulled 2 brushless systems for the feel of my magnums and wont go back.
I don't do comps so I run sensored brushless... wont wear out, has excellent efficiency, smooth startup, tons of rpm, and amazing torque and power characteristics... 2700kv, 14.8v, 11t pinion gets my carpra to nearly 15mph yet can crawl oh so slow. 3500kv, 11.1v, 11t pinion in my trx6, or the puller pro r 4100kv on 3s, has it crawling very slow but with excellent speed. 5ah pack on the trx lasts 1 to 1.5 hours while the 1300mah 4s packs on the capra last 45 minutes. . If I comped I'd run a motor specific to the course... ie, high traction = slow crawler with soft suspension and low traction = a lotta wheel speed and stiff suspension to bounce over obstacles.
@@RTmadnesstoo the esc is very important. you'll want something with a programmable throttle curve to make slower crawling even more controllable. It's throttle resolution and curve can be the difference between the smoothest startup and the worst, and can make the most smooth motor feel like the crappiest. You need quality esc and motor.
Bought a crawl Master expert over a decade ago tortured the hell out of it a buddy now uses it and treats it worse than I ever did short of catching on fire you can't kill a Holmes motor! Although I can definitely picture a Holmes motor running on fire doesn't seem impossible for some reason.

Nice to hear that you are using gold plating on the magnets, I assume that the super resin takes care of the armature quite well. What pressure brush springs come on these? I'm certainly looking forward to trying one of these out just as soon as I can get back to work and make some money again.
Just revisited the video to admire your beautiful motor I have one in 11T that I’ve been trying to find the perfect home for it I haven’t had any comps happening around me so I took it out of the comp truck I had it in. I think the Capra will be the next rig to give it a go with a 9 tooth pinion I tend to not trail the Capra so it really only gets put in rock climbing situations and I drive very slow and smooth. What do you think about running the 11T magnum with a 9 tooth in a Capra using the micro mamba X as an esc? I love your products and appreciate your videos keep bringing the heat and innovation!
It's pretty impressive to see an electrical motor designer who has is own motor brand company presenting himself his products !!! Mr. TAMIYA and all others out there can't say the same
John thanks for making this video. I would love to see or hear a comparison between the puller 400's and the magnum stubby's like what the difference in "feel" is and a dyno comparison would be icing on the cake. thanks for all you do
How would your magnum 540 compare to your pro 550, short and fat vs longer slimmer? I was looking at a future upgrade for my TRX4 with a 550 motor, I’d like to just keep it brushed and want to put a quality hand wound motor in it.
OK. So you got me going and full of questions. I love all the information and seeing the parts all disassembled. Is there anything that can be Reused after you catch a Motor on Fire? Does the Heat destroy the Magnets or can you stick Bearings and another Armature in and take off? How Hot do you bake the Resin? Have you explained the Angle of your Armature Slots? 'Skewed' I think they call it. Are all your Magnum Motors like that? What kind of Metal are the Armatures made of? Pure Fe? How do different Brush Compounds affect the performance of a Motor? Do Brushes that burn up fast produce more Power? It never occurred to me that drilling on the Armature would disturb the Magnetic Field. Is there a way to see what the Magnetic Field looks like?
I aspire to be a "motor snob" My last two builds the motors I wanted were out of stock. Both times I ended up getting another Holmes hobby motor (torque master expert 550 21 turn) that I am very pleased with. I am now building a Capra and while waiting for the motor I want to be in stock (revolver) I ordered a "place holder crawlmaster sport;" 540. Love your motors an effort you put in to providing quality motors. Thanks for giving us great products at reasonable prices.
I wouldn't use a revolver in a capra... too much crud gets up into the electronics section between the battery tray and the skid. Also, the capra is geared too tall without using an aftermarket transmission. I'm running the lowest gearing, 11t pinion, and it has a ton of wheel speed. Honestly though, the capra is excellent with some wheel speed and power. Mine runs 14mph on 4s with a 2700kv puller pro standard and 11t pinion. When I do strait high traction crawling I put in a 3s pack, but I use the power adjustment setting on my mamba x to adjust my power delivery depending on the situation which means on 4s I can go anywhere from 3mph to 14mph topped out and the esc scales the throttle with the adjustment so on the lowest setting I get 1.5mph at half throttle vs 7mph when set to max power at half throttle. . best mod, by far, for the capra is 4 wheel steering. I run this thing non stop on opposing steering for tighter steering and it feels amazing. I hate using it in 2 wheel steer mode. . Funny thing is I get more compliments and awes with my capra than I do with my erevo blasting down the volley ball courts at 50mph.
@@KTMcaptain Thanks for the tip. I haven't got the capper kit yet Should be here in the next few days so I don't know the layout of it very well. What would you recommend for a brushless power system? I do like low speed control but like more wheel speed than most people for my crawlers. I like the stock gearing and 3slot 21t torque master expert on my two TRX4 sports for reference.
BLIND J the Capra is definitely fun with wheel speed which is why I think axial geared it so high from the factory with a 14t pinion. I run an 11t on a 2700kv puller pro. I think it’s nearly perfect. It can crawl smooth and slow, and is very close to the maximum speed I’d want to go with the Capra. . I drive mine like a bomber half the time and it’s great. Just be careful of the battery compartment size. It’s small. . I’ve ran this setup on 6s and it’s too fast with too much power for the chassis. But it’s amazing. . I’m partial to Holmes’s puller pros, I have the 3500kv and 2700kv standard and 4100kv pro R, and I like to use castle X speed controllers because of the on the fly adjustments. On my 2 speed trx6 I use rock race mode and on the Capra I adjust power via the radio. . I’ve never tried using brushed outside the stock titan 21t, but I do know the puller pros are very smooth to start and have torque for days.
So John, for a TRX4 that is around 11lbs which Crawlmaster Magnum do I want for slow smooth crawling (no comp) and top speed is not critical. I'm thinking the CM Mag 540 16t would be close to my current CM Pro 550 12t with a 9/45 gear. Yes/no?

Damnit man,,I got a mamba x micro 1406,2850kv,C.C,because I couldn't find your esc on ebay n couldn't connect to your website, tell me I made a good choice.not pro crawling but want great performance for my Losi Nightcrawler..has worm gear diffs,,so REALY don't need drag break
do you still ride bmx?
Always get what you pay for with Holmes (and then some)
Lil pricey for a brushed motor.... but dam this thing is a torque beast and it’s fast AF!
So any plans for a 540 sport 80t?
The 55t sells about 100 times slower than 35t. Who uses 80t?
@@johnrobholmes tamiya 1/14 trucks, 80t on 3s is becoming the more common set up over the old 55t on 7.2v nimh/2s
Love the philips😜
550 Magnum?
One question, who was calling you at the end of the video? Lol
Lol your a cracked nut!!! Love it.
i have your crawlmaster pro 550 in my coyote its a beautiful fantastic motor i will be buying more of these for my other crawlers i used to do cheap motors but having tried this motor i will buy more as the others die i would also buy one of these for a comp crawler i am building when i get to the electrics bits
What esc do you pair it with .?
@@jrsantoyo9028 it's paired with the hobby wing 1080 works perfectly with it
@@rileykairc dude I'm ready to get the stubby. But was wondering What esc. Because I have a mamba x and a micro mamba pairs with their sensored brushless castle motors. But these are brushd so no 3rd wire. So I was curious. So that 1080 is a good match. Ima get it. Thank you bro
@@jrsantoyo9028 I think it's a very good match and it's so quiet to which is perfect for me I hate noisy motor ESC combos ,the 1080works really well with this motor and does what I need it to ,I now have 6 crawl master pros in my crawlers with 1080 ESC paired with them I also have the magnum, and little Tugger to and they both have 1080 s to
I LOVE GOOOOOLD
Great motors not sure if the short screw driver is needed ..you really need to invest in better tools John...lol
John Holmes has a long screw driver.
Wait so there is a Chinese knockoff of the Mag? I guess if I was to make a replica of anything it would have to be the best of whatever it is.
Only improvement I can see is a 550 length 🤔
I spent $150 on a magnum, so me.
I dunno, seems awfully technical for a "silly" channel. where is travis?
@ Holmes Hobbies: Just say the most important reason anyone should buy from you as supposed to a Chinese mass-produce copycat, is simple, much better quality control, and much better high-quality components, then those you will find in a mass produce copycat motor. And the bonus, they are made in America, not in a factory in China.
I wouldn't spend that much on any kind of electric motor. A nitro engine though.... Now that is a motor.
No.. that would be an ENGINE. and I hate to break it to you, but a brushless motor has far more power and torque than a nitro engine.
@@RemedyTalon I don't care about power and torque if the car is dead and boring.
Christ I did not know that I was beholding
Einstein of motors.
Man your self promotion shameless.
Next the motors will
levitate and crawl backwards , grow wings and fly.
