- Join John Robert from Holmes Hobbies as we learn about the differences between an outrun and an inrunner motor. This is part 1 of a series.
Are inrunners and outrunner the same?
What makes these motors different?
Is an outrunner really better?
This videos is a 101 beginners course on the main differences in these to motor topologies. John breaks it down nice and easy so even a newb to sport can understand.

Im gona have to watch this twice cus the first time I was busy staring at the cool RC cars
Im gonna go with…..ah man this is so dang hard…….decisions decisions…….but….yeah, gonna have to go with both I think.
Fun video John. I just put the revolver classic 1950kv through it's paces on some hard lines today, it did an amazing job. I'll probably sell it an grab a puller pro it's the last I've yet to try lol. I'm keeping the standard revolver V3 it's a gem!!! Look forward to what y'all come up with next👊🤙🤙🤙
Does this answer the age old question of “what motor to run with x or y weight” maybe not, but my burning question is. Did Holmes stumble into a barbershop, misses Holmes had enough of living with a lovable tramp or was there a “incident” with the strimmer while clearing the yard??
patiently waiting on Crawlmaster 2 so I can quiet down my revolver. Weather is warming up and would like to crawl at night, neighbors dont really enjoy the revolver noise lol
Just dropped some
Heat sink options are also kind of limited on Outrunners.
Any difference in noice tough? My revolver V3 makes a really distinct noice compared to my other innrunner stuff.
Thanks for the good stuff. Some time ago I was wondering about the outrunner, what it is and what it is used for. And tell me how about their waterproofness?
Outrunners are waterproof. They just don't like dirt or mud...grit can get in there much easier cause its open not closed off like an inrunner.
Thanks for the Video. What are the advantages of Torque or Power? I wish you would address the Number of Poles also.
I would love to see you make aircraft motors…any plans???🤔🤔🤔
Which brushless motors are waterproof?
Sorry if this is a noob question but what is the difference of power vs torque density?
I always ran inrunner motors and my go to motor is your crawlmaster expert 20t as I always had great luck with it and it just works well for me. 1 day I'll try an outrunner, lol. Just curious, what is that black rig behind you? It's on the first shelf rite behind the blue truck. I love the look of it.
Witch inrunner Brushless motor Of yours Can i run 6S with???
I’ll Keep Eye On heat, But Witch motor..? 🙏🏽😃

Who knew scissors are actually time machines. - 10 years John.
So, if outrunner is not sealed, is it still safe to operate it at least in rain conditions 🙂?)
Thanks a lot 🙌💪🙏👍🌄
2 questions: how many more amps do outrunners pull vs inrunners (I swear I keep puffing up packs on my Revolver I usually use on my inrunners) and are SENSORED outrunners practical in the rc crawler world? Thanks for more videos like this to clarify confusion! I think the crawler community would be somewhere else today if you hadn't decided to get into the motor and electronics industry your products are simply the best!
So in general the HH revolver line will have more torque than the HH in runners? So does that also mean stronger drag break hold with the revolver line?
Yes, the outrunner is like having more leverage
Very nice video!💥💯👍
Holy crap, at a glance, i thought it was john schnieder lol. Wheres john rob? N wat have u done with him?
THANKS VERY HELPFUL SIR🇬🇧🇺🇲🕊️✌🏼👍🏼
I love my Snubnose V2...
You were sorely missed at BTC this weekend buddy!
What about for a electric skateboard i see mostly outrunners
Is it a stupid idea to have a video on a more detailed tech level? I'm very curious about the deeper level tech of both motors...
John has done plenty of 'technical' videos for the more experienced guys and, I think it's safe to say, he will continue to do so. While I have been into RC for over 25 years, I'm relatively new to crawlers (2 years) and appreciate this approach 👍 Besides, he said he will be delving more into this in a subsequent video(s) and its good to kick things off like this.
@@jerryvolpini7987 hi Jerry, thanks for your comment. I think the video is out now. I will go and watch is this evening. Thanks again. Cheers Pieter
Still rocking my Crawlmaster pro 13t. I have debated moving to brushless but If I have to give up ANY of the brushed feel I won't be happy. Question: how much more efficient (in regards to runtime) is a puller pro stubby compared to the standard puller pro, given a similar kv?
If u want the best in runner rite now that is about as close to a brushed motor as possible, then grab the 10shooter 2700kv motor with a mamba x....... it really feels like a brushed motor when set up is done rite. The regular pp have little more power output with haven larger magnetics I feel, but the super smooth and slow start up and crawl of the 10shooter is just worth the little loss of power. But will say it's not noticeable unless u run both the pp an 10shooter like I do in the same rig basically.
WAIT a darn tootin' minute, who the heck is THIS guy? 😁😆 - 🧔♀👶
Is the revolver v3 waterproof?
revolvers are not waterproofed
I fly fpv I wonder if a 6s drone motor would run a 1/10 . There out runner I think? I have a couple spares
I would suggest a 35 or 36mm frame size, which will typically have a 4mm or 5mm shaft and require funky pinion. This is part of why I design my own crawler outrunners, so it accepts a normal pinion
@@HolmesHobbies yea your right by the time I attach a pinion to the motor could have a hh out runner in the mail. You dont do 24th scale electronics do you?
what motor would be great for a 12lb SCX10 running between 8000 mah 3s 8000 mah 4S lipo
I want to use one them for twin motor rc boat 22 inch boat and fast
اي نوع اوفر في استهلاك الطاقه ؟
اقصد عندما نقوم بنفس العمل ، أيهما اوفر في استهلاك الطاقه ؟
شكرا ، تقديم جيد .
Which kind of motor is quietest?
@@jeffposey3762 the one running a crawlmaster esc 😆
Between a 300W inrunner 2435 3300kv and a 260W outrunner 2822 2600kv, which will have more torque?
Not enough info. Those size numbers have no standards to compare with.
@@HolmesHobbies 2435 would be the Surpass Hobby red KK series 4 poles, the D2822 is a DYS/Flash Hobby motor 14 poles, right now I'm using a tiny DYS D2225 2000kv 12 poles motor, it has enough torque but not enough top speed, it's 20% slower than the stock 280 motor, trying to find the best motor to fit in a 280/370 footprint for trail/light crawl uses, unless I ditch idea of using safer 2S 18650 and go with 3S lipo, just not comfortable with my kid handling pouch cells lol
I'm sorry for being a bit dumb but how does the drage brake work with sensorless brushless motors like these? I would really love to use a HH motor for my Phoenix but I don't want a car that starts rolling down the hills, especially if it's still on it's wheels
The next video will explain the biggest factor on this, the flux gap area of the motor. Determines potential for drag brake and torque
@@HolmesHobbies cool, looking forward to it, thanks for all the great explanations, much needed for beginners as well as thick old timers like me 😁
Hello from southeast alaska
Cause I have at least 10 that are almost or are flying and probably another 10-15 in the rafters!🤣🤣(don’t tell my wife!!)😉🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂👍🏻
Excellent video, I appreciate it. Looking forward to delving more deeply into these motors! 👍
Does that mean I can run my Puller Pro V2 3500kv on 4s? 😉
You can at least for a while
No problems , just watch the temp.
Now for something that isn't in the RC hobby yet: Axial flux motor.
It's not a good topology for the motor sizes we use. We need long and small diameter motors, which is radial flux!
If we could fit a 4 inch motor it would become more feasible.
@@HolmesHobbies Weeellll... A lot of outrunners, at least the ones used in race drones, are pretty flat comparatively. But that is _literally_ just a single example, so yeah.
@@HolmesHobbies Actually, now that I think about it, you could stack a bunch of axial flux stator+rotor sets to get a "long" motor. At least theoretically? Hmm...
🤘🍻🤘
Why you didn't make a RPM test, it could be better video
We know the effect of motor KV, there is no need to test rpm. Is there certain information you are looking for?
Definitely high torque motor to shave them whiskers ...
Why is the outrunner so noisy. I’ve been thinking about getting one but That squeal
Thats an esc issue not a motor issue ;)
😑 i go for the Revolver! noise and everything i dont care
Also one is annoying as hell and the other isnt
Maybe instead of power you use the term RPM for inrunner.
I think shaving your beard makes you lose a lot of torque he has to gear down his chin
2 part question, 1: what did you do with your facial hair? 2: if you still have it, may I keep it?
You shaved 30 years off of your face
