Dolores O'Riordan said specifically that she wrote this song after The Cranberries 1993 English tour....during which The IRA planted 2 bombs in Warrington which resulted in the deaths of 2 young boys.....She wrote the song back home in Limerick after seeing on TV the devastation caused to one of the mothers of the boys.....and a quote taken from the BBC reads......The singer was particularly offended that terrorists claimed to have carried out these acts in the name of Ireland."The IRA are not me. I'm not the IRA," she said. "The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. "When it says in the song, 'It's not me, it's not my family,' that's what I'm saying. It's not Ireland, it's some idiots living in the past."...... ...RIP lovely Dolores who passed away early in 2018.......She was also offered a $1million check by her label/manager not too produce the song Zombie but she ripped it apart....

The part you mentioned about her repeating "with their tanks, and their bombs, and their bombs, and their guns," it wasn't just repetition, she was referring to both sides. Each side would retaliate against each other in a seemingly endless cycle of violence. Both sides would add the latest event to the litany of grievances as justification for the next attack.
So what she's saying is "with their (side a) tanks, and their bombs, and their (side b) bombs, and their guns."

I have PTSD, and when I first heard this song on the radio the line 'In your head, they're still fighting' resonated with me. Later I listened to the rest of the lyrics and realised what the song was really about, but somehow my initial reaction still feels relevant. PTSD perpetuates and magnifies trauma, and the long years of conflict make it almost impossible for those affected to let it go.

The children playing war with the soldiers looking on and the IRA graffiti all around shows the culture that a generation was raised in. She is writing about children that died, but not the ones in the video. Sometimes a song makes a real difference in the world - not on it's own, but a cultural shift came about with a generation growing up who were ready to put the violence of their ancestors and the enemy's ancestors behind them. U2 also was a part of this shift as well.

That moment when you tossed your hands up in the air said everything in that moment on your face as all of the words that you shared immediately afterward. Not as a criticism, but to your credit. One of the reason you are one of the favorite reactors to watch in a fairly large circle of viewers is because your face is incapable of giving a false read.

I got to see The Cranberries live in 1993 - they were touring with Duran Duran as the opening act (don’t even get me started on high underrated the brilliant Duran is as MASTERS of new wave). “Linger” was just breaking huge in the US. We were absolutely blown away by how awesome they were - the stunning Dolores used her voice like a whip, and she held us spellbound. It was amazing. Absolutely amazing. I cried when I learned of her tragic early end.

What a great choice, Daniel. I never thought through the lyrics before. Thank you for giving me the opportunity. I think the song is primarily speaking to Irish struggles over the decades. She mentions 1916. IIRC that was the beginning of the modern struggle for Irish independence.

Zombie could easily be considered one of the "masterpieces" in music, striking a balance that just makes it work both inside and outside of mainstream. But many of their songs balance that same edge, and thus it's a band that I thoroughly enjoy the sound of. They're well worth listening to, imho.

I used to go to a heavy rock club in the 90s and the dj paused before playing this for the very first time after just playing mettallica. The floor was packed with about 200 people and he said for us all to give this song a chance ....as soon as the first chord struck about 100 more people tried to get onto the floor...it got played every week from that week on till the club closed in august 99. The club was the Mayfair Newcastle where 2000 rock fans would descend from all over the uk on a Friday and Saturday .....great song by a great band. If you really want to cry listen to Linger by the same band. That was their first major uk hit. Thanks for reacting and for bringing back such great memories Daniel.

I remember when this song was released and I remember when the bad wolf cover was released. Both songs are fantastic.
The original was made in response to events I barely knew about at the time, because we didn't have the global access to news we have now. So middle school me knew abstractly there was fighting just across the ocean in ireland, but the thought that people who weren't soldiers were getting killed didn't even occur to me until a bit after this song was released and I learned the meaning behind it. That it wasn't jusr a general anti-war song.
The story I heard about the cover: Dolores liked the cover a lot and was going to sing a bit for them on it, but she died days before she was to record it. They released it in memorial. It's still hard hitting. Because it is the same old violence and pain and senseless loss of lives, particularly those of innocents, every time.

My BFF lives in the Republic of Ireland and I've had the chance to make extended visits there over the last couple of years. Dolores is revered in the musical community and her loss is still deeply felt. Check out the Bad Wolves cover, it's great.
If you ever get to visit Dublin, walk down McConnell street to the General Post Office. You can still see the bullet holes in the stone columns and front from the Easter Uprising--the 1916 reference Dolores makes in the lyrics. Look up the history of Northern Ireland and the Troubles.
Btw, Dolores's last name is pronounced as O'Rear-den. :)

Daniel - nice reaction, I appreciate that you are so thorough. I’d heard of the Cranberries, but had never listened until a few years ago. Don’t remember why, but I watched a clip of a talent show from Germany where a teen girl sang Zombie. She was very good, and I really liked the song, but didn’t understand the lyrics. So, I finally got around to watching the original.
With the video, it didn’t take me long to understand what the song was about, and as to the music, I loved everything about it, but especially the keening by Delores. For me, it’s one of the best songs of the past 30 years. Probably others have recommended these, but Dreams and Linger would be excellent follow up reactions.

I hope you know a bit about recent Irish history, if not, it will be helpful to look into it. The gold paint represents the land of Ireland. In ancient pagan religion, the land was magical and sacred. It suffered and was damaged when there was warfare, causing crops to fail. Notice how the snare drum sounds like gunshots? The warfare was over the Catholic and Protestant religions. She uses a type of yodel that is specific to Ireland.

  • @markmurphy558

That vocalization that you are trying to describe is called "keening", used by the Irish at funerals to express anguish. Variations of this practice, which is akin to yodeling, are used by other cultures in the Middle East, where mourners hire professionals to perform at funerals

These lyrics are so amazing - the dead bodies of the children turn into zombies in our heads and haunt us. Is there any better way to express it? OMG!

Your question about the kids and the cross resonated. Here's my take on it: this is basically cold rage against a society that would venerate the child as an innocent, while at the same time perpetuating an unending conflict into which these same children are raised and shaped. Their play is contrasted against the soldiers because by the metaphor it's just practicing their future. And the crosses and the iconography is the sanction of religion and the twisting of faith that makes pious noises about children and a pure Mother Mary. It's saying that the Church, or society, see its children as ornaments without free will... and will murder them as part of the social order. The original instigators are dead, yet the war goes on. The children hanging on the cross are presented as blood sacrifices to an endless zombie struggle.

That's a traditional Irish vocal style known as Keening. Delores was a master.

The nanosecond the song starts, you know something is coming that's going to knock you flat. What a stark beginning. It is a short song, but it is so intense that I think it is about as long as many brains can take at one sitting. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful. Glad this was chosen!

The Cranberries did a lot of songs--as others suggest, it would be a contrast to react to "Linger" and "Dreams" (Dreams was part of the movie "You've Got Mail"). If you want one to react with your Dad to, try "Ode to my Family." And one that has a bit more of the Zombie rock sound to it, although far less serious, is "Promises."

This track was the first harder rock sound for the band but they continued on with it in many tracks after this. Just an amazing talent in both her work with the Cranberries and her solo albums. Don't drink and bathe.

The Cranberries concert set at Woodstock '94 has an excellent Live version of "Zombie", that is worth checking out. And also that Bad Wolves cover is awesome, you would no doubt enjoy both of those..

This reaction is much older now compared to me watching it today but you asked about the cranberries and they were not a one hit wonder in the eighties when I was in high school.
