I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen and heard this over the years but every single time I still get the chills and it hits my soul. Many of the Cranberries’/Delores’ lyrics can do that to me but this takes the cake. And my god, when the babies scream.
This is a bit late, but the video was shot during the tail end of what was called The Troubles. Those are real British soldiers in Belfast, Ireland and Irish children playing in the damaged buildings. Not actors. Same with the paintings and graffiti on the walls. Those were painted by people in Belfast. That part wasn't staged for the video. The videographer told authorities he was shooting a documentary so he could get the footage without getting into trouble. Dolores and the rest of the Cranberries wanted authentic images. They lived through the Troubles. And they very much wanted the violence to stop. On ALL sides. Best wishes.
Wow wow wow that's very deep and very interesting. I can see that because watching the video it looks so real and authentic. So knowing that now makes me love and respect this band even more! Thank you for sharing that information, I appreciate it!☺️💙
I've heard that this song by The Cranberries is credited with bringing enough attention to the Troubles to finally get both sides to the negotiating table in good faith.
Dolores is doing a traditional type of singing called keening which is common at Irish funerals, and she was singing like this for the two little boys who died in a bombing, the bomb was hidden in a trash can and it blew and killed them both eventually that's why she says and their bombs 2 times in the chorus, she heard the bomb and she saw that two little boys died on the news so enraged she wrote this song, rip the amazing and talented Dolores O'Riordan.
I've absolute conviction that this song made a difference, the people of the Republic, N.I. and G.B. made this a hit with political power, something HAD to change. When a child out shopping for a mothers day card gets murdered for putting a wrapper in a bin, even the nutcases realised their depravity.
Back when there were artists... back when there were bands who played instruments... back when songs were written with a purpose... Nice reaction to a very powerful song. Thank you!
Thank you so much!☺️ I appreciate it! And you're absolutely right, they definitely don't make bands or even music as a whole like they used to. It's sad! That's why music like this is so valuable today. It's raw, it's authentic and it's just plain ole real music!
It was due to market forces, it takes way less money to fund just a single pop singer or rapperz the band died in the 2000's as far as the mainstream goes, the underground is popping right now tho, some of the best music I've ever heard has come out recently, just gotta find it
Since its release, millions of people have danced and sung along to this song, without understanding its true meaning. Sometimes you just have to stop and listen to understand the true meaning of a song. It took me years to really understand. I'll allow myself to suggest a reaction: Pink Floyd - The Great Gig In The Sky (PULSE Restored & Re-Edited)
Wow what a fantastic and thoughtful reaction. Yeah, this one always makes my allergies act up. Too many first-hand accounts I guess of friends and family members and acquaintances that have been to war or lost loved ones to war, both overseas as well as here at home, where there are certain urban areas that might as well be considered war zones. It's crazy. From a musician's standpoint, I would point out that what you heard her doing with all those breaks at the end of her vocal phrases that sounded almost like half yodels? She's Irish and that is actually something really old that goes with that language and culture, and it's called keening. It's an expression of grief.
Thank you so much! 😊 and I totally agree there are certain situations here going on that can be considered war zones and it is crazy! But yes it does sound like a half yodle. But I had no idea yodles were expressions of grief that's very interesting. Thank you for sharing that.
this is the reason for the song : It answers your 1916 questions and many others. "Delores was inspired to write this due to the deaths of 2 young boys in Warrington, England on March 25, 1993... 3y/o Jonathan Ball and 12y/o Timothy Parry were innocently playing in the streets when 2 bombs, hidden in separate trash cans, went off. (54 other innocent by-standers were injured as well) The bombs were hidden there by the IRA (Irish Republican Army), as part of the long-standing War between Great Britain and Northern Ireland (over territory). Religion ended up entering into it, so of course it sort of became a war between Catholics vs. Protestants as well (that's partly why she's standing at the crucifix in the video). The War was/is known as "The Troubles". In case anyone is interested, here are some important facts about the song and the reason it was written. I'm hoping maybe it'll help those who don't know, to understand the images in the video... 1.) The title is self-explanatory, and you absolutely understood it correctly Biz!! It's NOT about any one specific person (as some seem to think)... Zombies are "mindless" by definition. Delores found the word "Zombie" fitting for those committing mindless, atrocious acts on fellow humans during war. 2.) The disagreement which led to "The Troubles", started in 1916. HENCE THE LINE: "It's the same old theme since 1916". It had become a near civil war with 24/7military presence on the streets. Delores herself grew up under those conditions... 3.) The boys didn't die instantly. Hence the opening line: "Another head hangs lowly, child is SLOWLY taken"..... Little 3y/o Jonathan and 12y/o Timothy both passed SLOWLY, days later, after suffering horrifically. 4.) It's INTENTIONAL when she says "Bombs" TWICE in the chorus. It's in honor of Jonathan and Timothy.... there were TWO of them and they were killed by TWO separate bombs. That's why the chorus is: "and their bombs, and their bombs". One bomb for each boy.... 5.) The line: "But you see, it's not me, it's not my family" was because Delores was Irish, and the Irish Republican Army (IRA) planted the bombs that killed the boys SOOOO in turn.... the Irish people as a whole, were blamed and even hated for their deaths and the injuries to the 54 other people"
You got me because of reacting to Tom MacDonald. Turns out I like your reactions, so I wanted to see what you thought of this. Look up the history of the song. It pretty much started the longest running cessation of violence in IRA history.
This video was specifically about two kids that were killed by a bomb in Warrington, England by the I.R.A(Irish Republican Army). I believe it was In a trash can and they were casualties. It was the irish catholics vs. Protestants of england. If I remember right one died right away and the other took a couple days "another mother's breaking heart is taken over " I think is a reference to the second death. There is probably a whole Wikipedia page to check out about the exact details of this event. Warrington bombing should be enough to get started for a search.
OMG! That's tragic I had no idea. Wow obviously I knew this song was tremendously deep by the words and video alone but to know it's based on real tragedies is gut wrenching especially knowing it's about children. Thank you for that information. It makes me appreciate this song and its significance even more.
@@jazminesreactions the wailing sound she is making is called "keening". people would hire people to wail at funerals to make it easier for the family to cry outloud(you might want to double check that last part but I'm pretty sure it's right) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keening
@@jazminesreactions It's not only based on a real tragedy, but the tragic scenery in the video is also real. The soldiers, the murals of the IRA and the playing children are real. It was filmed under the guise of making a documentary in Northern Ireland. The British and Irish television at the time did not show this video for its graphic display of the situation, especially the kids that were playing with guns. The band being Irish themselves, this song was a very brave thing of them to do. The norm was to remain silent about "the troubles" as it's called, but they disagreed with that. "When the violence causes silence, we must be mistaken." It's a conflict that's so old, there is no right or wrong side. There's only people who are fed up with it, and the zombies that keep mindlessly fighting on.
I think you are a little confused, The I.R.A. although predominantly Catholic, also contained Protestants and did not carry out the attack against the Protestants of England, but to put pressure on the UK Government to withdraw from Northern Ireland
As others have already commented, this song was written in response to the deaths of two little boys in Warrington, England, in 1993, who were blown up by an IRA bomb, it is said while out buying a Mother's Day card. The Cranberries, being Irish, are on the other side of the conflict, but the song is politically neutral, just calling for an end to the violence. To add to the tragedy, two decades later, singer Dolores O'Riordan drowned in the bath in a hotel room, after heavy drinking.
It's an anti war song it's anti ira it's anti uvf it's anti British military. It's violence fatigue. I refuse to let the narrative of this message sway to either side. Love your neighbor, it's ok to disagree. Remember death is permanent.

Bad Wolves have a version of this. The sad thing Delores was going to sing on their version. On the day of the recorded Dolores died. They did her proud with their version check their video too
it is a song based on several Irish wars, the war of Independence from 1919 - 1921, the Irish civil war from 1922 - 1923, and The Northern Ireland Conflict from 1968 - 1998, there is a long history of conflict in Ireland and the IRA (Irish Republican Army) has always been in the middle of it all as well a root cause of all the death/conflict, unfortunately History will and is repeating itself
"the IRA has always been...a root cause"? Maybe, but Britain had a large part to play by occupying Ireland for 200 years and having threatened peaceful protests with military force which led to the escalation to violent protest.
And you can add the militsias on the other side as well: UFF="Ulster freedom fighters" (!) and UVF =Ulster Volunteer Force". The Peace Movement was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and they were credited for their effort in connection with the Peace Agreement in the mid 90's. Cranberries must be said to have contributed on that side..
it's real, 2 children were killed in this war. 3 and 12 years, they were going to buy a gift card for mother. IRA and England were killers. ( sorry from my english, i 'm french in Belgium)
WOW 😲 I had no idea. It's so sad. It makes the cranberries that much more special for shining a light on that tragedy makes me appreciate them even more! Thank you for informing me. Oh and I understood your english perfectly☺️💚
