The actress playing Philomena said in an interview that they know they're being interviewed for a comedy show, but they don't know anything about the questions that will be asked. She also said that they start the interview by asking some serious questions to lull them into a false sense of security before switching to the insane ones. Diane Morgan started working in comedy doing standup in 2005, and this character of 'Philomena Cunk' debuted in 2013 in Charlie Brookers 'Screenwipe.' She was born in 1975, which means that she was 14 when the Belgian group Technotronic released their techno-album 'Pump up the Jam.'
I think that was my favourite bit of cunk on earth. I was laughing while trying to tell myself that it wasn't funny. I love it when she accidentally stumbles on excellent points.
That part when she fake cried when talking about nuclear warheads is so underrated. In my line of work (I work with funerals) I have seen so many types of grief and talked to many that grieve for the loss of their loved ones. I understand if there are people who think she over do it or cringe when she fake cries but Philomena came close to fool me in that scene. To me that is scary good acting!
The character is meant to be an idiot, but here she comes across as an innocent. Someone not really aware of mist aspects of the dark side of life. When confronted with a bleak truth they often react far more emotionally than people around them feel comfortable with.
The character was written to be naive and uneducated rather than stupid. That can lead to a surprisingly nuanced peformance and Diane Morgan (Cunk) is a talented comedic actor which lends itself really well to serious portrayals - just look at comedians like Robin Williams in serious roles.

watched an interview with Diane Morgan and something that I feel gets a bit missed is that its not just a history comedy show, but rather that its a biting satire about documentaries- as an entertainment medium, as an educational resource, and even as a video editing style. Its brilliant satire.
The people being interviewed know it's comedy but are just asked to go along with it without a script. In the beginning it was more effective because not a lot of people knew about her. But now the people she interviews know exactly what they're getting into and know how to play along. She said it herself in an interview with one of those night show guys.
As a fellow history buff, though I've never formally taught the subject, I have found intelligent use of humour to be a great tool in aiding me to help my children, and now my grandchildren, to enjoy history. Although a bit dated by now (sorry, I couldn't avoid the pun), the book "1066 and All That" is one I believe you would enjoy. I read it at junior school, as did my father at his, and my oldest grandsons (in 🇨🇦🇦🇺🇰🇪🇬🇧) are now raving about it. That's not bad for a book first published in 1930, but then, good history never gets old 🙄🤭.
It does not matter if the show is scripted at least to some degree - It's funny as hell, and lands some good punches through the laughter. And I just love how the experts, who aren't comedians themselves, manage to go hold it together without breaking character. I'm sure there must be a treasure trove of hilarious blooper clips I hope we get to see some day

They know it's for comedy purposes, they know she'll ask questions in character, but they aren't told what questions. Apparently they're told to treat her as they would a small child. Kudos to all that take part (Dr Cox especially) and the fact that they'll even do it is credit to Diane Morgan.
She's great. I think it's better if you see more of it in context rather than clips taken out of context. It just gives you more time with it to soak it in and you can see the through-lines in the bits better.
Diane Morgan is a comedic actor/comedian. She’s a sterling representation of northern British humour. She’s one of Boltons many comedic geniuses. Shes quite the lass
one of her best moments is, when she claims that an apple fell onto Darwin's head and he checked, if there was a monkey hiding, who had thrown the apple...deadpan humor at its best.
The historians and academics are real and they are told to keep a straight face while the comedian-actress asks them ridiculous questions delivered with irreverence.
10:52, actually yes! There was a Portuguese inventor in 1709 (Bartolomeu de Gusmão) who was designing a lighter than air craft meant to travel in the sky, but his research and schedueled prototypes were all scrapped when the inquisition forbid him to continue his work
Just a thought here... Philomena's approach could be called cynical, but it is also masked in a deliberate disingenuousness and the soft voice she carries, which really makes it work. Mr. Terry, there's still room for the overtly curmudgeonly history cynic if you want to take a swipe at it!
She is a national UK treasure! The programmes are educational but she is also known for her comedic stance. So I imagine they know it will be truthful questions with a twist in between commentary!

watched an interview with Diane Morgan and something that I feel gets a bit missed is that its not just a history comedy show, but rather that its a biting satire about documentaries- as an entertainment medium, as an educational resource, and even as a video editing style. Its brilliant satire.
the abba stuff is so funny cause she asks him for his favourite abba song & he says with a straght wholesome face " Dancing Queen "
So happy you’re checking out our girl Philly Cunk!! We love her here in the UK!!! She’s an absolute genius, great British dry humour 😂😂😂
I'm sure there must be a treasure trove of hilarious blooper clips I hope we get to see some day
The people know it's a joke but are asked to play along and roll with the punches- but they don't know what she's going to say.
My deepest admirations to these experts to keep straight faces!
Bloopers must be hillarious!
One of her best:''Jesus was the first celebrity victim of cancell culture''.
I recently binged all the episodes and it was great fun. Please watch more they're great 😂
The shows are hilarious. I still think the one where she finds out about Laika is one of my favorites
I picked a bad time to watch this when we had guests in the house and I was cackling like a maniac from inside my room
From an interview, She said the experts know that its a comedy show but they don't know what she's going to ask them so imagine them really holding their laughs right after asking those questions.
I watched an interview with the actress who plays Philomena and she said the interviewees are aware they're about to be interviewed for a satire show, but they're not given any of the questions.
Her video on time is so famous in England this actress has people yelling’ what is clock?’ When they see her in public.
mr terry has such a contagious laugh
Glad you could laugh along with me!
she is just to much, so funny and so fine she plays with words, language and facts, and leaves the pro's baffled each time. i like here style thats for sure.
Aww i was looking so forward to the Soviet onion and it wasn't in the compilation T_T
Her humor is so unapologetically British it is absolutely brilliant. Love her!!❤️
They know it's a comedy series, but they don't know what questions are going to be thrown at them.
You really MUST see a couple of episodes of Horrible History! You will absolutely love it! Promise
They know it's for comedy purposes, they know she'll ask questions in character, but they aren't told what questions. Apparently they're told to treat her as they would a small child. Kudos to all that take part (Dr Cox especially) and the fact that they'll even do it is credit to Diane Morgan.
I hadn’t heard the “19 out of 20 people are criminals” bit before and I thought I’ve seen all of Cunk.
Diane Morgan's great. I've not looked into it but I'd be amazed if she does all these on the first take and doesn't laugh once.
The people on the show know that they are on a comedy show but have no clue what questions will be asked
They know it’s gonna be a gag interview but they don’t know what the questions are gonna be all they know is that it’s gonna be a comedy bit
She's the best thing that ever happened to history ❤
I love her
They know it’s a comedy show, they just don’t know what questions are going to be asked. Seth interviewed her on his show.
She's great. I think it's better if you see more of it in context rather than clips taken out of context. It just gives you more time with it to soak it in and you can see the through-lines in the bits better.
Please do more of these, Terry!
The experts are real. After the first series, they know it's for a comedy. But that's all.
The experts were probably told the interviews would be "more lighthearted"
I love ABBA, and I love that that guy says his favorite ABBA song is Dancing Queen. A huge change of topic. Warheads to Dancing Queen
He was fabulous, very sweet to help her out
Dude, Philomena is hilarious!
10:52, actually yes! There was a Portuguese inventor in 1709 (Bartolomeu de Gusmão) who was designing a lighter than air craft meant to travel in the sky, but his research and schedueled prototypes were all scrapped when the inquisition forbid him to continue his work
They don’t know it’s a joke, they’re told one thing: treat her like a child…..
She is a stand up comedian. She knows how to right and set up a joke.
Amazing writing on all er programs. Hundreds of genius lines. Please check out more of her
I cannot believe it took me this long to discover her!! she truly makes me laugh out loud!! she is SOOO funny
Shes got ger own style and believe me they are terrified if what questions she will come out with.shes famous for her outragen ess 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
I wonder if Mr Terry would be reacting to latest Lazer Pig's video about t14
Just a thought here... Philomena's approach could be called cynical, but it is also masked in a deliberate disingenuousness and the soft voice she carries, which really makes it work. Mr. Terry, there's still room for the overtly curmudgeonly history cynic if you want to take a swipe at it!
She is a national UK treasure! The programmes are educational but she is also known for her comedic stance. So I imagine they know it will be truthful questions with a twist in between commentary!
oh please do more like this! you gotta watch the whole series!!
I reccomend watching her full history documentaries "Cunk on Britian" there are 5 or so (: They are funny
I second this. Cunk on Britain is brilliant.
Yeah, her show is absolutely brilliant. Do more if you can, because it is a good mix of history and humor.
I found myself binge watching these one weekend. Still wanted more.
Diane Morgan is one of the reasons I’m proud of being British. She’s absolutely fabulous.
I laugh a lot watching her and now I'm laughing even more because he's laughing 🤣 I need a whole series of reacting!
