24 hours without Internet

  • I recently had a look at my RUclips screen time - it was 8 hours per day. 8 HOURS!! A bit too much, if you ask me. Therefore I did a little experiment - can I live 24 hours without the Internet? Let me tell you - it wasn't a great time...

This is such a huge issue in my life!
I think it's the "automatic" uses that are the biggest problem for me (and I need to finish this degree so distractions are 👎) My Android phone is five years old yet still has a new-ish "Focus Mode" feature that I set to turn on automatically during the work day. You choose the apps to block/hide. You can use an app on a "break" and after 5/15/30 minutes it shuts it down again. It just means that if I pick up my phone and open RUclips... it HAS to be "on purpose". I watched this video during a 15 minute break!
I also no longer charge my phone near my bed. I used to wake up and look at my phone first thing, get distracted by something, and then instead of getting up and getting ready, I would spend 30 minutes doing nothing important. Now I sometimes get out of bed and *forget* to grab my phone since when I get out of bed I usually head to the kitchen or bathroom first. I might then find something distracting, but it's no longer quite so automatic.
(Also... using internet on my computer is less automatic than phone so I feel less bad about RUclips on computer... The problem for me really is the smart phones. I might try to get a dumb phone soon.)

You handle that so well! I really need to get better at reducing my time online. Thanks for all the tips! :)

At first: don't beat you up for using alexa to get more light, if that's the usual way!
I would have to discuss whith my family or choose a day I am home alone - and then switch off the router (and mobile data of course). And it wouldn't be easy to me, too. As long as I am able to decide when this was going to happen, I would prepare: get books from the Onleihe, maybe download an audiobook or podcast … and try to make a plan: what work can be done whithout internet, what could I craft, what needs to be tidied - how to keep myself busy.
Our former home was on the countryside and sometimes it just happened after a thunderstorm: no internet … we would have to wait until it would "magically" work again! And you never knew when this would happen, and whether it was for an hour or for two days (and sometimes electricity would also be gone. In the middle of Germany). Those days I mainly tried to keep my good mood against the rapidly sinking mood of my teenage child …
So next time: talk to Toby, maybe he is willing to have the experiment together whith you (and thank god there is no teenager to convince).

Yes, thank goodness there is no teenager to convince - I'll ask Toby, maybe we can do 48 hours next time. I want to do a week, but I wonder if that wouldn't be too much...^^

I would suggest to start small and then either try a longer time or have a regular offline-day every x weeks
