Neil Maclean Custom Kenworth Motorhome

- Neil Maclean’s unique vehicle was originally a 1983 Mitsubishi FK102 truck that was purposely built into a Kenworth motorhome. He has owned it for about 9 months now since he bought it off a bloke in Bunbury in Western Australia, who bought it from the original owner who was an engineer by trade and had built the bus from the ground up in 2010. It has only done 81,000kms since being built. It holds a Mitsubishi 6-cylinder turbo engine which was brand-new straight out of the crate and into the truck as it was being built up and converted into the motorhome. The running gear was completed with a 5-speed Mitsubishi manual gearbox.
Part of the customisation was a brand-new complete Kenworth cab with a spring front-end, and a dash fabricated completely by the engineer-owner to be fit-for-purpose with a multitude of gauges, switches, and everything else Neil could possibly need. It is well-appointed with air-ride seats, a separate toilet and shower, a private double bedroom, kitchen, loungeroom and dining area, two TVs, two heaters, and two air conditioners. It is a comfortable and complete ‘home on wheels’ with excellent steering and it drives like a dream. Neil and his wife, Miranda, have just undertaken a renovation of the interior to modernise it and freshen it up including a professional paint job, new stereo and speakers, new tin plate in the kitchen area, new cupboards and door, new seats, new table, a completely new floor, and new furnishings. The exterior had a light update with new side steps, new side rails, new side lights, reinstating original blinkers, and a stone-guard.
One big job that Neil had to undertake came about when he was getting the engineer’s certificate to change the truck’s Western Australian registration to New South Wales. It turns out that the vehicle was 40mm over-length. To fix this, the original exhaust shrouds had to come off and new ones had to be made which then brought the exhaust under the legal length by 10mm. Once this was done, the certificate was approved, and it passed its rego for New South Wales with no problems.
Living in Wagga Wagga, NSW, Neil first started driving for a job at 19 years old, straight after leaving school, when he gained employment with Comet Overnight Transport driving a cab-over FSR Isuzu and a cab-over LB81 Scania, where he stayed for 11 years. From Comet he went to work for KNS Freighters for 10 years, before moving on to Rowlton’s Road Express for two years. During these years he also worked for about 10 years for Finemores as a permanent casual. He then worked briefly for Kenworth in Wagga, before changing careers to manage a local windscreen business. He eventually ended up buying this business which he still owns, though he does see a future permanently travelling in his decked-out Kenworth/Mitsubishi motorhome.
When it comes to rego in AUS, NSW is the pits. I moved to South Australia and recently and can’t describe how much easier the process is - and cheaper.
My mate in Barahgup/Mandurah Western Australia had this thing for Sale for quite some time.
I have plenty of photos of this inside and out, and I must say that you have done a great job with the interior redesign 👍
I think it was the old gaudy dark timbered English Pub style interior that put off most of the potential buyers, but is looking much better now……. Good job 👏
Great looking rig. The various rego rules around Australia are ridiculous. We've got a 19t 12.5m (40-footer) coach motorhome conversion. Rego in Qld. for it (tag axle) is $1800/year. We're getting it registered in Victoria for under $400 (club permit rules). Unlike in Qld, I don't need annual inspection. WA and NT don't require you to get annuals. That's why there's a disproportionate percentage of motorhomes with WA or Vic. rego.
how farkin stupid we are the same country it should be the same laws for the entire country
S.A. is worse.
Every state is run by different predators
@@NocashhereRobbowell said i couldnt agree more
Its a bit strange that he only had an engineers certification and not a full ADR (Australian Design Regulation) certified.. Even that he didn't have to at all.
Great to see Neil is still playing with the toys.
I am so glad to see it lives on and hope Neil enjoys it
It was for sale for over 150 k if I remember correctly
And the build is fully documented 👍👍
YESSSSSSSS... Added to the list of things I absolutely need.
That is absolutely fantastic.
Yep typical Aust different states different rules.
They all want your money though
Nice motor home mate, we'll catch up one day for that beer.
I walked through that Truck a few years ago... actually bought a Dual Cab Dyna off the same fella.... He had a bit going on down there at the time building a Blitz Camper Vehicle. Nice Fella
The registration rules are pathetic . The States need to get their act together .
Every state is run by a different corporation. All corrupt, no matter where you turn.
the states have no authority at all, they are a business as is all the "rego" offices , do some research and see what your actual rights are, time to take back our roads from these corporations posing as governments
The states are autonomous, that's why we have state governments so we can rule ourselves and not have Canberra breathing down our necks.
We have no rights in Australia anymore
@@phil6506 sorry bus incorrect, the states have no authority what so ever, they are purely legislative and are only on paper as a state and all governments were reduced to mere corporations via the Clearfield doctrines, they are a business and your a legal fiction they use for commerce
I believe that "Dave Sparks" bought one similar in the U.S...🤔...nice ride...😉👍
Government dept worrying about 40mm, I’d be more concerned on the length of the farkin premier nose from telling lies to the citizens. Anyway that’s a sick set up mate well worth the wait.
This actually reminds me of some of the command trucks used now by first responders. Without the comforts of living of course.
Beautiful 💯💯👏👏👍👍. Just wondering how you access the engine?
love it mate.. i just saw it at the Lockhart truck show recently..
That is one SWEET rv!!!!
Only thing is......
The steering wheel is on the wrong side! 😂😂😂😂
DISCLAIMER:
would be WAY COOL here in the USA! ✌😎
wow wow that special truck
Ha ha seen that around wagga this time last year, great unique looking bus
Livin the dream Macca.😊
That looks sick
Awesome,i want one !!
Well done
Beautiful mate,i'd love it
But they have no issue diving you points on a license for a driving offence that is committed in another state.
What a beauty.
Clive Parmer doppelgängers ! Haha😂
The screen in front of the windshield for stones/rocks?
Interesting build Mate & ya have the money💵💰💵to burn🔥on fuel⛽cost😱for starters ! What ever floats your boat on wheels!
The Kenworth cab on a Mitsubishi truck seems silly, but I can see why the builder wanted a wider and flat-sided cab to fit with the motorhome body.
It’s not a Kenworth Cab. It’s all custom built.
That's cool
1:50 That big plate between the seats.
What a beauty, eh?
Probably about the only motor home or caravan id not crank my fridge motors up for at 2am if you parked in the truck bays. Thats smick
Mitsubishi in a Kenworth that’s a Sin I’m out of here 🥲🥲
But ya got to admit,,it’s a bit bitchin😂😂😂
Definitely a,,CRIME…😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂,SOMEWHERE,,😂😂😂😂
Yep I'm out of here too ~ Mitsubishi in a Kenworth 😳 Kenworth with a Mitsubishi Engine 😳
and a 5 speed !
The only thing Kenworth about this is the cab.
I want one😵
Nice. 1
Is the yellow mini Kenworth still around?
Max length in the US is 45 feet, so im assuming its in a different country
It would pretty obvious it's in Australia, even if he hadn't named two Australian states multiple times.
Apparently the overall allowed length there depends on wheelbase, and this doesn't have enough wheelbase to be allowed 45 feet overall.
What is “Evry Ink” ?
Being a cabover, how do you access the engine?
would be that big plate between the seats
@@TassyDeval That is normally called the doghouse !
You can't access much of your engine from the top .
Try to change the belts and you're in for a hard time !
The same way as every forward-control van and Class A motorhome: from below, or via the doghouse between the seats.
I know how you feel with that massive 40 mm oh my god! S.A. are shocking and so childish as well they just want to waste your hard earned money on stupid little revenue raising things so you have to come back more money and time wasted especially if your going for a classic car LHD exemption for full rego or club log book or engineering a hot rod etc . I love your rig it looks great thanks for showing us happy holidays !! 👍
Amen
🎉Wonderful rv, magnificent creations/ American rv now far more expensive compared to the oldest day's was between 150k n 200k now over million/ I loves aussie creations, nsw road maritime service (rms) allways over rules preventing Wonderful locals build rv/ many old massive caps of trucks sitting rust should use as second useful likely build as single small house using the old trucks caps sitting idle starting getting rusty, so wed can reduce the waste and debris flood the involvement/ should NSW RMS wake-up the planet being destroyed by over flowing of waste/ reduce the waste by reusable these martials. Good on y'all old skool aussie. Loves from Auckland.
Wow.............
#BeingSaneInInsanePlaces
I want one ☝️
Turbo petrol? Surprised a decent diesel isn't powering it
It’s not Turbo Diesel. Doesn’t need it ..plenty of horsepower! 😀
A Mitsubishi engine in that thing is a sin.
Smooth and Reliable .
Why is a Mitsubishi engine a sin in a Mitsubishi Fuso FK102 truck? It goes with the Mitsubishi transmission, Mitsubishi frame, Mitsubishi axles, Mitsubishi suspension, Mitsubishi steering, Mitsubishi brakes...
The fkng fuel consumption - farkkkkk
The laws are NSW are just stupid all do is find any Old engine with one foot in the grave to get if 😊
I hate kenworths but thats a nice one as a motor home tho
There's nothing Kenworth about it other than the cab.
@@brianb-p6586 …its not a Kenworth Cab it’s custom built to look like it! We owned it and have the progress photos show this.
@kennyadventures2135 that's not what the current owner says in the video but if that's true then it's not a Kenworth at all.
Just the grill and the doors. Everything else is custom built. Pretty cool hey! The guy was a genius that built it. Unfortunately he has passed on now.
if that Kenworth mobile home doesn't have dual chrome stacks specially the nine inches for me that is not a kentworth that is a big mothar thumper clone of a mobile home
Ice set up, regos are a joke though. Perfectly legal to rego in WA, Perfectly legal to drive all around Aust including NSW, engineering done in Aust. NSW- no you cant transfer that rego, you need to start again, waste heaps of your time and give us a tonne of your money, then we can give you the same as what you already had.
Thats Gay
