I was at Wigan in 1974 it was the best time of my life and it was all high vibe just like this video shows, in fact I am sure I can see my ex husband Gary "Skin" as he was know from North Wales and yes everyone knew each other and we danced everywhere in many different clubs. It was the music
went to the casino first in 79, to friday nite oldies session, absolutely blew me away i was 16 and i`d just got my first weeks wages, remember standing by the left hand side of the dance floor not far from the stage, i just stood there with my bag in hand didnt move for about half an hour just blown away by the music and dancers, then the velvet satins-nothing can compare to you came on, that was it bag down coat off straight on the dance floor, danced my bollocks of till 8 the next morning
I am 59 and remember dancing to Boots Randolph[Take a Letter Maria]Gwen and Ray[Build your house on a strong foundation][Wombat[getting on life]and the late great Little Richie[Just another Heartache] in Mr Ms Wigan all the best to northern soul fans, great days ktf
damn all i remember were cracking northern nights when everyone enjoyed themselves.friendships were cool and all factions joined as one. i was not a true wiganite in fact enjoyed samanthas, notts , derby Talk of) coalville tiffs and cleethorpes, peterboro, sale, yardley all areras but everyone friends . lets just enjoy what we had thanks for the tracks and vids everyone involved.
Soulster, thanks for your comments, It brought back happy memories of my first time at Wigan in 78 I was exactly the same as you, gobsmacked by the atmosphere, unfortunately the last time I went there was not as a dancer but as a fireman to put out the fire in March 1982. The place has such special memories
The dreaded cameras we refused to dance in front of them they they got us with an aerial shot in the end 109 white top right hand side the unmistakable footwork just messing around Gethro respect xTrue best years 73 74 75 for me
i think its great for anyone who went to any nighters that i went to,for remembering ANYTHING that happened or what it was like cos i was blocked out of my head at ALL of them ,and i went every weekend for 4 years without missing one ,friday nights, saturday aldayers and nighters the saturday and a dayer on sunday ,what great memory's you have ?
Remember how the condensation used to drip off the ceiling like rain? And when you came out in the morning, your clothes stank of cigarettes and sweat.
And your Perrys were full of nicotine drips... !! Crap - especially as most of us wore white/part white shirts because of the ultra violet fluorescent lights , white socks too of course - although I was 'informed' at one all-niter that "the in-colour was yellow" - bought some .. nah they don't shine in the light when yer stompin'.. back to whites, from mi' bag.. :-)

Cheers mate the only other pictures are in magazines and I have them ready for the book our dancing took 3 years to evolve from the floor of the catacomb's to Va Va and wigan then we let it rip !
cant remember this at the casino in 74.? unless it was after Aug 74 ,got to say the best years at the casino were from opening night 73 to 74.never any lights on to.
who cares if the vid is authentic or not? It conjures up memories of those magical times. I never had the opportunity to do Wigan, but Doncaster had its Top Rank (I was at college there), Stafford had the top of the world, blackheath had Tiffany's etc etc. Great times
If you go to 1.26 from the areal shot comming down on to the floor thats me dancing right hand corner just messing around doing footwork. The only footage of me dancing in the casino which i went to from the second night it opened till it closed. The night the cameras came ALL of us refused to dance hense the areal shot .He is right march it started to pick up till then always empty according to my diary 1974 which i still have love respect to my soul brothers and sisters GETHRO CHICAGO USA ...
Thank God 4 YT. My kids didn't(nay COULDN'T) believe me when I used 2 describe the Casino 2 them. They don't have much choice now. No apology yet though
@ToneDeFF34........Totally agree with you - 73-74 and most of 74-75 WERE the best years for Wigan before it got utterly silly. [my brother and I first went in September 1973 - didn't go to the opening night as we were warned it was going to be raided]. But went every Saturday night from the second week onwards - and I have to admit it was pretty good, although the atmosphere was nothing compared to the Torch! Things continued like this until that fateful night in 1977 when the Casino's management completed its total 'sell-out' by allowing Granada TV to film inside Wigan for its documentary series 'This England'. It was an absolutely horrible night - made worse by the fact that my brother and all our mates decided to go to the Mecca as usual! [no idea why I decided to go to Wigan that night, but I have regretted it ever since!] I spent the entire night huddled in a corner, cracking up whilst trying to shield my eyes from the incredibly powerful arc lights. I never ever went back again! Anyway - this brings me to my question. Is this film really from 1974? To the best of my knowledge [and to repeat, we went to every single Wigan all-nighter from 73 until mid/late 75] and I don't ever remember filming taking place until the dreaded Granada TV documentary in 1977.
anyone wanting a great alnighter you dont need look any further than the "nottingham irish centre" next one is 15 december and its getting better everytime ,2 rooms last one downstaris was "torch room" great crowd and only £5 before 10 till 7 next morning
Quite a few me included dangled our microphones over the balcony to record live audio tapes. Did anyone do videos I wonder ? Not the documentary, us lot
Yeh who cares if its 100 percent authentic , I used to go to the Wheelin the mid 60s and Iwish we had some videos of those times . there is one - A Whole Scene Going , shot in mid 66 by Barry Fantoni for BBC2 - anyone know where I can view it ???? help
The filming wasn't 1974! We voted against the TV coming but the did it anyway! and most regulars either didn't go or refused to dance at the time - I sat in a huff and didn't go the second week of filming. Yeah wish I could look back at myself now but then was then. it's a shame the only film of it isn't a true representation.
Jill Harrison If you want a 100% TRUE representation of Wigan Casino/Northern Soul on film then I suggest you watch the documentary, "THE WAY OF THE CROWD" my friend
@@liamwhitcombe1237 …...If you honestly think 'The Way of the Crowd' is a ''100% TRUE representation of Wigan Casino/Northern Soul'' mate - you clearly were never ever there!
Jilly Bean.....spot on! I too was there that night [sat in a corner cracking up with a bunch of other real NS fans] Meanwhile, the Granada film-crew were on the dancefloor filming for their TV documentary series 'This England' - with all the lights on! Wigan WAS good that first year [1973-74] and maybe for a few months of 1975. But then it all got silly. Day-trippers and Divs filled the place out and the music was utter shite! [theme from Hawaii 5-0 and Joe-90 FFS!!!] I hated every single minute of the night they let the cameras in and to me, it was the end! I NEVER went back to Wigan again. And a LOT of the real NS fans did likewise.
A couple of us got to the 2nd niter and was regular I suppose to 77/78 then maybe every 4to6 weeks and yeah was a few quitet nights with lack of atmosphere but god yes there was divs! After 74 when they let rhe cameras in (even after a united NO came from the record area) and they put shite like footsee and wigans ovation on telly It ruined the Casino for alot of us regulars But we had great niters crop up. Just dont look at Wigan through rose tinted glasses Or you wasnt really there
Correct we refused to dance that night but it is of that night me left hand corner am I sad at the time I thought fuck them but now looking back I wished I had let it rip still life young kid and pride kept us off the floor I never knew they were filming later went down to London for topps another story read my book its for all of you xx Gethro 342 why bluie's mate 342 xx

It wasn't really like that. and in it's hey day there were LOADS more people.A tangible atmosphere. This clip is brave attempt to show how it was. but it just wasnt.
