    My late father is in this video dancing in the backgound from 39 seconds onwards. He is the man with the black t shirt with red coloured shoulders. He loved going to Wigan casino most weekends in the 1970’s - he passed away in 2014

    As a kid, I used to proper cringe at my Dad, doing his dad dancing at parties.
    Out there on his own sometimes just going for it with the kicks and the spins. All the time I’d be hoping the ground would open up and swallow me to end the embarrassment. Hoping that he’d soon need a break and why was no one else dancing like him.
    Years later I heard about northern soul, I loved the music! Then I saw the videos and in that moment it all made sense!!!
    In an instant the embarrassing dad dancing was cool, My Dad was cool.
    How I wished I’d known as a kid so I could watch him in admiration and get him to show me the moves.
    So, I showed him this video, I explained, we danced in the kitchen, him in his late fifties and me in my mid thirties. That was easily ten years ago.
    A few days ago my mum sent me a video if him, in lockdown, sunglasses on in doors and still dancing..
    Stay cool Dad, stay cool x

      Paul O well, corona-lockdown gives us a lot of time to look into stuff that you’ve always wanted to explore, but never had time to do that. Just a couple of minutes ago I checked Wikipedia article about Stone Roses and found out that northern soul was one of their musical influences. That reminded me of a girl I met at ska-party in Moscow with Trojan Sound System’s guys. We danced, talked about music and around 4.00 am left the club. Moscow subway starts its working hours around 5.00 am, so we talked more. She was properly dressed for a ska-party - checkered dress, leather boots. But at one point she said: yeah, ska is great, and i love it, but my absolute favorite is northern soul. I promised that i would check what this soul is about and why it’s called northern. I did that today and i should say, that this subculture is really something else, the vibe is strong and the moves are mesmerizing. So, yeah, you’re dad is definitely cool, you should be proud of him,. And i will certainly learn some moves myself to dance in self-isolation. I think I have yet another favorite thing in my life

    I was a punk back in '78. We wore drainpipes and got chased everywhere we went by the straights wearing solacios and highwaisters. I hated 'soulers back then. When punk was taken over by the poseurs I realised the same had happened to my music. It warn't the movement, it was the masses who'd assimilated our culture and made it mainstream.
    A few years later I look back on Northern Soul and to me it's one of the most astounding artforms I've ever seen. At the risk of pissing everyone off, it's an example of what makes our country so great. We took the music of discarded artists in the US (Gloria Jones/New York Dolls) and gave them the forum they really deserved.
    But even the Tamla artists must've been gobsmacked at your dance moves. - Imported back into the US in the early 80's that was the new dance craze that was Made In The USA - breakdancing...

    • @richardhubbard6786
      @richardhubbard6786 6 лет назад +8

      Totally agree with that, ......the artists who performed on these amazing songs would never have been heard of if it wasn't for the UK soul scene. A scene that was driven by British working class youth wanting a 'certain' sound. I read somewhere that the geezers from Studio '54 visited Wigan in the mid-seventies and took all the ideas back to New York........where we had the 'BIRTH' of breakdancing?...... It was born in the North of England! X

    i've always wondered why my knees are knackered .... after reading all the comments below , it seems we're all the same .... what i'd give for 1 last night at wigan .... out of all the many venues i went to , this one was at the top of my list , my god do i miss it and i'm so damn grateful that at 15 years old my mate persuaded me to go with him and the rest of the crowd that left the Palace in Rhyl that night ... i remember it like it was yesterday , even though it's now 46 years ago .... simply amazing ... and i still listen to the best music ever created ....

    When i was young we used to take the piss out'a those Northern Soul Bastards. Now I know what we dan saf in Saf London missed out on!!!! While we were bouncing around like twats to Punk, they were still ripping up the dance floors wiv talent.
    In my mid 50's & I cant get enough of that wicked dancing, and of course the tunes!
    Long may it last.

      Same era as me at the Casino Neil, used to go from Wrexham every few weeks with a couple of older lads who first took me there I loved it even though I was and still am a rocker at heart. There is just some thing in the music, lyrics and voices that haunt me, so much feeling and emotion poured out it makes you cry, laugh, sad and happy all at once. Some gem's posted on here which keep me coming back for more each day, keeping the faith, never in danger as long as there is soul as good as this about. KTF.

      Nick Williams was in wxm weekend soul suite top venue [know the owners] a rocker to each there own lizzy are ok thats my lot school mates were sabbath zep free etc but wasnt for me in my naieve head [metal was dirty women ugly unwashed clothes soul was smart nice birds boy meets girl songs etc etc] wrong i know but id rather that than beyonce gangsta raps

    • @nickwilliams1065
      @nickwilliams1065 9 лет назад

      neil williams Heard about the suite and the music they play from an ex gf who goes there some weeks, yet to get there myself but will be trying this summer you can bet that. Be about the only decent place in town now I guess, used to do the discos at the nurses home and the centenary club 76/78 so many yrs ago now. Great days then at our Youth club too, it was awash with soul boys, all a few yrs older its how I got the bug that is still with me now. Strange reception at the Casino with my long hair but never any trouble, wish clubbing was the same now, too many puffed up chests and teens on a respect trip, without ever thinking they need to earn it. Who has the soul suite, used to be the old Albion pub if I am correct? Guy I knew had a record shop just down the road, Denzil owned Rabbit records on town hill. Ex gf was a Phoenix from acton park, lots of brothers and sisters. May even see you the suite when I am up next. KTF.

    i'm american so i never experienced this (i was too young at the time anyway). though i'm not much of a dancer and this is not the sort of thing i'd normally be into it does look like it was alot of fun.
    plus it gave english teenagers and twenty somethings a place to have a good time where no fights would break out (a very common occurrence in the u.k.).
