Wasn’t there we were more Wigan pier! Although the amount of time and practice these guys and gals put in through the week is unprecedented awesome 😎 moves and what a shame they both gone now! But a little birdie 🐥 told me otherwise I’m up for that “alive feeling whenever wherever 🎼🤼♀️
dean carr .……..Mmmm - Wigan Casino WAS good for that first year [Sept 1973-74] with a brilliant atmosphere. But take it from me, it was absolutely nothing compared to the Torch. The Torch was pure electricity - and I have never seen or experienced anywhere that even came close to it during my entire time on the Northern Soul scene. I was lucky enough to have been a regular at the Catacombs and Blackpool Mecca, as well as going to Chateau Impney, Oldhill Plaza, Whitchurch, Stafford all-dayers, Cleethorpes and countless other NS venues. Whilst they were all great in their own way [especially the 'Cats' and Mecca] the Torch was on a completely different level. Oddly, Wigan Casino gave me my worst ever experience of Northern Soul too - I was there the night Granada TV filmed its documentary. Sheer hell!
I agree totally I put it up and the video is from years later, put it up instead of a looking at a blank wall ha or wish I had video of the bogs and I agree entirely the Beachcomber was very foreboding but for a 15 year old in 74 it was all amazing but a shame for me as things started to go downhill after a few years and only went back for the Friday night oldies all-nighters which were awesome.
I was there that night and if anyone else reading this was, they will know who was accompanying Gloria on an electric piano on the left of the stage, almost behind the curtain.
That first night was memorable because I didn't get there!!!!! Went to Va Vas on Friday, hitched to Mecca on Saturday, couldn,t blag a lift so I crashed out in a bus shelter in Blackpool afterwards.Freezing wearing just a Wrangler jacket to keep warm. Great memories of Wigan though until the Soussan instrumentals got played and didn,t bother again.
74 first time ever went there every week after that lived and breaved it keep the faith my salvation the devil made me do it thumb a ride down there or come on train last one from manc v Wigan anyhow time as passed us by but in my heart i no I'll always love northern soul wcsc CP Sams All nighter s Koko Frankie skc
remember this well i took my little tape recorder to wigan and had it on my 4 tack then it went missing glad somebody save it its always be a mega tune
It must have taken a lot of stamina and great 👍 rhythm to even prepare in the week in order to shift like they did! We @ the pier were great 👍 but you didn’t have lasers, strobes, and blasting bass to assist you!!! Good on you all admirable great dancing 🕺
Tainted Love was definitely circa 74, but not the footage , I first heard this as a Keith Minshull play in the Beechcomber, and for those who didn't know this to the side and below the Casino. It was used I think to get the bulk of Soulies off the main road?, it was a dark foreboding room, occasionally young uns getting rolled, even the light shades were illuminated skulls, as they say paranoia could be fun.KTF
+Backstreetboy52 Yeah, I got rolled in the Beachcomber. Some cunt from Bolton sold me what he claimed were six Filon for a pound. Turned out to be Haliborange. First and only time I ever went to Wigan without taking my speed with me.
I remember being off my tots dancing to this and wondering why everyone was clapping at the wrong parts... but then again maybe it was me that was out......🤔
this footage is from 1977 not 1974. world in action wanted to film in 1974 and the management put the vote to the crowd and was rejected. but after the divs moved in the film crews moved in too, those early days were the best before the Hollywood crowd
paul soulboy.....Spot on mate. Wigan was pants after 1974 - full of divs and 'sightseers' who came to see what all the fuss was about and just to say 'I was there'. Most of them comment on here only ever went to Wigan!
Hi Pete they went Haliorange they were Tic Tacs, only joking, think we all got ripped of at some time. Great minds think alike, it was always wise to score in mid week, and drop them few miles enforce getting there. Great days though. KTF
Your right mate - the clip was from 77 and not 74. And yes I will agree that in 74 dancing was better. People shuffled their feet more and did less acrobatics. I know, cause I was there!
That film clip cant be from `74, it just wasnt like that then; the dancing was different (better) and the clothes were not so generic"northern soul fashion" back then!
@@v99nda .......This was 1977 and was filmed by Granada TV for their 'This is England' documentary series. I was there - absolutely hideous night. I never went to Wigan again.
what was the name of that urine stinking hovel next to the casino where we used to go to,on the right next to the casino.I don,t think I,ve ever seen a toilet like that in my life.
Wigan had 'the scene' in its grasp in its beginning but sadly lost it in the end, ultimately killing the 'underground superb style' - Good to Bad then got Ugly!
0:00 - 0:03 The transition to the song, and the excitement of the crowd on hearing the initial beats. Simply cannot be beaten. Love it!
i never ever ever get sick of watching this video..it just screams northern soul....
One the best hand clap floor fillers evr
