We left Scotland to come to the casino every Saturday, plenty clubs in Scotland but as the song goes, nothing compares to you, north of England was the best of UK, we loved your country
England owns the other three Home Nations, this “union” is a holdover from when the concept of ‘personal union’ still existed. England can and legally should exercise royal prerogative, and legally recolonise the rest of the Home Nations. Why is there no devolved English parliament? Why must Englishmen submit themselves to the whims of Scots, a subjugated people? Because that is what they are, if we are going to use an archaic system, let’s not act like the people have evolved whilst somehow the system stays the same. God Save the King
A guy in my regiment was a regular there and when we went to germany we went to a disco (1976) and he did some northern soul dancing and the germans parted and couldn't get enough of him.
LEGEND! I was afraid to go out on the dance floor when i was in my teens, then I discovered Northern Soul and met a mate, Mike who taught me the moves, when we joined the forces and I never looked back. The worst mistake they ever made was tearing down the Casino!! That was part of our history. My old old passed a few years ago now but he will be spinning and dancing up in the paradise that is the Casino. KEEP THE FAITH old mate. Happy days!
I didn’t realise all those years ago.. that Northern Soul would become a part of my life forever!.. a small group of us traveled from North Wales, every Saturday night.. can’t dance much now the years have taken its toll on my knees.. still love the music and the following is absolutely amazing never thought it would become so popular. We were very much the minority back then and it was a relatively underground movement.KTF
Sure can, what a fantastic feeling. I remember feeling, so pleased i had finally been aloud to go. It's all i thought about Northern Soul, Wigan Casino. I couldn't go every week i was to young. But when i did. I was in heaven. The Afican/American singers are brilliant. Tunes so good full of emotion, beats, rhythm, great, to dance to. Very rare was there trouble. People were kind friendly. From the Northern Scene i got in other styles of black music and made friends with people from other cities and played the Flute.. It has has been the making of my life .I can 't thank Northern Soul music enough. I feel blessed.➕🎶🎼
it s a shopping mall now , station rd is a covered , but there is a plaque on the wall , the town really has lost it s soul , best regards to bournemouth
Lads, skinheads in particular used to dance like this in local clubs (Blackburn) in the mid-70s . 'Under my thumb' by Wayne Gibson always filled the dance floor.
I remember watching the complete version of this when it was broadcast in 1977...I was 13 but thought it looked fantastic. My favourite band is Led Zeppelin but I do love Northern Soul, the music is so evocative ❤.
The irony of Northern Soul was all those obscure songs from America that had nothing whatsoever to do with the British dance craze it started and in fact preceded it have now forever known as “Northern Soul” songs.
I went once when I was about 14 or 15 in 77/78, can'trememberwhich exact year. It sends a tingle down my spine watching this. Judy Street's "What" is THE Wigan Casino tune for me though.
I can't help but wish I was born 10 or 15 years earlier than I was, so I could have been a part of this scene. Still, there'll always be Northern Soul. Best music ever. KTF! ❤️
You are so right. As long as I am able I will never forget my first visit 1 October 1976 a Friday oldies allnighter the adventure of a lifetime. Hence I will always remember that that date.

This is purely and 100% coincidence earlier this week I placed a comment on RUclips regarding WIGAN CASINO and GUESS WHAT..... On BBC1 BREAKFAST SHOW 22/ 9/ 23 at 0845am LO AND BEHOLD a fabulous 15m tribute featuring some of the original dancers and music plus a gig at Blackpool!!!!, truly hoping I wasn't the only one to relish this jewel in the crown TV SPECIAL "KEEP THE FAITH".. Everyone forgets that the genre that became known as Northern soul started at the Chateau Impney in Droitwhich in 1968/69 long before the Twisted Wheel and The Wigan Casino. It was only when a reporter from the NME refered to the music as "Northern Soul" that the name stuck!
There are so many myths and fables Jon. From the horses mouth is always the best source. The Twisted Wheel by the way opened in 1963. ruclips.net/video/2VCb9GaAowA/видео.html&ab_channel=docludi
Great find! I've never seen moving pictures of the Wigan Casino before. It looked like there were a lot more guys than girls. There were a lot of soda bottles on the tables at the end of the night; wasn't the casino licensed to sell beer? Great music, of course, but most of those moves wouldn't fly on Soul Train.
I love Northern Soul dancing.. it never really caught on in the Midlands back in the day.. a shame. Love the vibrant dancing with the baggy trousers much better than the shite served up to the youngsters nowadays eh?

I went to Wigan casino with my cousin in 1977, just to say I'd been really. I was 16 and more into rock and punk. It was the most boring night out ever. Couldn't even but alcohol. I say there for 8 hours, not able to do the dance. We all went straight to the swimming baths at 8 am on the Sunday morning and got the coach home. It was wasted on me unfortunately, but looking back I'm glad I got to experience it once, but once was enough.
