  • The Casino Club was a nightclub in Wigan, England. Operating between the late 1960's to closure in 1981. the club was characterised by its all-nighters headed up by resident DJs including Russ Winstanley, Colin Curtis and Keb Darge, who was also a well known dancer, all playing Northern Soul classics, made famous by Wigan Casino, through the night. Wigan Casino quickly became known as a primary venue for Northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent). It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino "The Best Disco in the World", ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
Please take note. Not all names are included in this short video in relation to Wigan Casino DJ’s or indeed guest appearances. Names mentioned are DJ’s renowned to play Wigan Casino/Northern Soul Music, with Russ Winstanley being the resident DJ at the Casino Club and pictured in the photo gallery positioned in Wigan Town Centre. Richard Searling was also a long-time resident at Wigan Casino and worthy of mentioning his contribution.

My best regards to you all wish I could have been there. Never forgiven them for demolishing the Casino. It brought so much money into the town, they could have refurbished it or built a new one? 😟Northern Soul...."Do I love you ? (INDEED I DO!") Keep the Faith brothers and sisters✊

What a difference 50 years makes. I first went to The Casino in 1975, travelling by bus/car from Leigh, form when I was 15 up to a couple of years before it's closure. Like thousands of attendees of all Northern Soul venues it just stays with you. Wigan Council have stepped up to celegrate this anniversary unlike their counterparts and the constabulary 50 years ago who did everything the could to close it down.

I love Northern Soul. I was too young for Northern Soul, but became an original UK B-Boy, up north. I also became a part of the early Rave scene in 1988-89. Just like Northern Soul, we became our own youth counter-culture, shunning mainstream and doing our own thing. As a soul DJ and B-Boy, I totally respect and admire Northern Soul for it's uniqueness of music, dance, fashion and counterculture. And just like our experiences, created times where a crowd became one, blazing floors with hot happy souls, sweating out every drop of energy, living the moment, living life to the full. Respect, peace and love.

This is fantastic Andy. I still remember it like yesterday, the floor was always covered full of talcum powder. I was only 19 when it opened and I went every weekend. I loved Russ Winstanley and the other DJ’s such as Keb Darge, he was also actually a great dancer Andy from Scotland, who as you say, played all of the Casino records as a DJ, he still does. Colin Curtis was also quality, I saw his guest appearances many times and I went to Blackpool Mecca a good number of times to listen to him playing the Casino records inspired by black artists. Again, awesome this and to have someone like yourself, even though it was well before your time, keeping its legacy going, again fantastic Andy!

I was so lucky to be on stage in one of the first dance championships...were it was awarded by crowd applause.. Both Sandy Holt.. myself and another character... danced to the three records played .... but it was both an honour and a privilege to have been blessed by such a moment in our lives !!!!!

I wasn't into it, in fact I never heard of it until 1979, when I became friends with a guy, who told me of great times he and his mates had at the Casino.
Thanks for the video, it taught me a lot, and I can see why people had such great times there.
A great big community of friends and strangers who became friends.
Great music and lifelong memories for the Northern Soulers.
      Well done to you, thanks.😊

Russell, yes, yes, yes, the Room At The Top was the very first All-Nighter in Wigan, do you remember the Group, The Wheels? The Room at the top was run by Ken Baldwin and his side kick, Tony, Absolutely Brilliant, when it finished in the morning, we use to go to Wigan Baths, then move on to Menses' Park. We all use to go to the Bodega in King Street. Loved being a full-blown Mod. Did you ever do the trips to Wales on the scooters? Just so many good memories
