Just as a heads up: Component (YPbPr) is the 5 connector cable that can output HD. Composite is the 3 connector cable. This is a good thing that the dongle uses Component, not Composite.
i need some help with this exact unit with the colours being mostly grey on everything you can make out some colours but not a proper brighter colour like in the video. i use the ypbrprr thing on the console instead of rgb and i get a display any help will be appreciated
@@mauriciodamenace2356 composite is a separate thing, that’s why the "component video out" setting under "system configuration" doesn’t do anything when you are using the yellow jack RGB setting is probably for when you are trying to output to a RGB monitor with component cables
The games are have a blurry look to them when you play them on a modern tv. It's better to play them on a box tv or buy the first model of the Ps3 that could play all Ps games
Larry Medina It would still load and work with GT4, but it has written on the package which VMODEs are supported... 1080i is nowhere to be seen on there... It might work if you switch the vmode and then un-&replug the adapter...
I bought one of these very recently. It was like 1/3 of the original price so I thought “no harm in trying it”. And it actually looks suprisingly good! Better than when I connect via Scart or the other RGB to HDMI-converter that I have. Only two gripes: one was that the supplied usb-cable didn’t work, but no biggie as I had a few spares. I ended up using a PS3 controller charging cable, and it seems to work alright. The other is that it seems that the device takes a few moments to power up, so the PS2 startup screen is a bit abrubt. Other than that, really happy with this thing!
What should be noted is that not all HDMI compatible displays will work with this adapter. I got this same exact adapter today and when I hook it up to my fairly old Samsung 1080p computer monitor, it displays an error message stating that the mode is not optimal. After some googling I figured that my display doesn't support 480i/576i input which renders this adapter useless in my case. My recommendation for you all is to get a basic PS2 AV cable and hook it up to an AV to HDMI converter with 1080p upscaling to be sure it's gonna work. Or prepare to potentially spend extra money for an HDMI upscaler.
I have a few observations about the PS2 to HDMI adapter. 1. On my slim PS2 (Silver version with integrated power supply) it works without the USB cable. On my fat PS2, it does need it or else it will cut the video signal occasionally. 2. It does work with PS1 games. In fact, I am using it for Xenogears right now. However, it will be 240p which is not supported over HDMI on many devices. Plugged straight into a monitor, it usually works since PC monitors often do support 240p 3. Sometimes it doesn't handle resolution changes correctly. You can test it for yourself if you lose video signal, just unplug it (and the USB power) and plug it back in and it will probably work again. Still, component is much more reliable if you have the support for it, but this device does work in a pinch.
Just to point out, samsung TVs generally have a good track record of supporting 240p content as it should be in the past, if you have an older samsung from before 2013, its probably a safe bet that this adapter will work but to be sure, always check your TVs specs.
YOHOMIEMP A fat launch PS3. They are your best bet for playing PS2 games on a HDTV especially when you turn on smoothing + launch consoles ARE PS2s. If you absolutely insist on playing on a slim though, a framemeister or an OSSC but be ready to pay for those scaler/line doubler and be ready to dive off the deep end into stuff that will confuse you so I suggest you watch My Life in Gaming videos about the playstation 2 to get an idea on how to get the best picture.... Actually watch the entire RGB master video class series or at least RGB1XX and RGB210 . That will tell you exactly everything you need to get the best picture possible out of old retro machines. (PS: If you go down the scart route, don't cheap out on the cables like I did and buy the hand made custom cables first. Those will be fully shielded!)
Mine is for the most part fine and its the route I've gone down. Mind you it IS a used unit so I don't know if it ever was sent in but it does work. I do have a PS2 hooked up to a CRT though which honestly looks better then HDTVs when it comes to these low resolutions.
Peter Haskins interesting, the adapter works for me on both slim and phat models. Also, I didnt realize to try PS1 games on a PC monitor. Sucks that PAL games are not going to display properly, though.
Anyone here because of the quarantine? Had to find a way to have more gamas at my disposal. And thank god it works. Some of the best $10 I've ever spent! Also, do the analog sticks on PS2 controllers not work with this converter for some odd reason? Does anyone know?
im here lol. So wait if i get this will the analog sticks not work???? damn ive been looking how to hook up my ps2 to a 2k monitor. down-scaled to 1080 of course
I‘m playing my ps2 games with composite cables on scart adapter. Can someone please tell me if this ps2 to hdmi converter has better quality or something than the composite to scart?
Just found this, and I’m glad I did. I can use the PS3 for PS1 games, so the last bit of your analysis isn’t an issue for me. Thanks a lot for this video!
I've had three of these. The first one actually used Composite and turned that into HDMI. Sucky for PS2, but I used it on my PS1 with varying success. The other two used component with two different chips inside. The first one deinterlanced 480i signals to 480p and allowed me to play 240p games like ICO on my HD TV. But it hated running PS2 games in higher resolutions than 480p. The screen would tear and drop frames. The third one is like yours.
Correct. My ps2hdmi device works with ps1 240p games just fine. This guy has a Framemeister, if he tries it with that he will find it works and reports a 240p signal. Most TVs don't like 240p through hdmi, and through component it's hit and miss too
mine somehow can work without the mini usb cable, i thought that it used to power the sound output but it isn't, so i am serching for what is it should be used
About not working with PSX games, it is not the fault of the PS2HDMI, but of the TV that does not support 240p by HDMI, which is the resolution of PSX games. But if you have a TV that accepts 240p HDMI, you can play PSX games without problems. regards
Excuse my rambling, but I'm guessing the PS1 incompatibility might be because the device has no idea how to handle 240p. My capture device, an AVerMedia LGP, does the same thing as this adaptor if I hook my PS2 up to it and play PS1 games. Also explains why the PS1 logo displays, as that's 480i. That would mean 240p PS2 games (Ico, Mega Man X Collection, Gunbird Special Edition) wouldn't work with this either, while 480i PS1 games (they do exist) would. Buuuuuut that's a minor nitpick. And even if it does support 240p content, work 240p over HDMI doesn't work on a lot of HDTVs and monitors anyway, so you'd need to do some sort of line doubling. Or at least do what most upscalers do (including those built into your TV) and just improperly handle it as 480i.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Also some monitors and TVs have trouble displaying the 240p content as well. I had the same thing happened when I tried playing Ico on an LG HDtv back in 2010. Realised it couldn't detect any signal so I brought the TV back and exchanged it for a Bravia, worked from the get go.
PS2 can actually output 1080 resolution with the red , green , blue cord. But it only supports 2 or 3 games that high. Like Grand Turismo is one of them.
Wow I can't believe Kai Link is still up and running, this was my 1st real online experience. And it was Gran Turismo 4! I remember it took a while to set it up though, and goal to get ping as low as possible to play with less lag
I own one of these myself. The problem with this adapter is not the adapter itself so much but the monitor you're almost certainly going to be plugging it into: The PS2 by nature simply doesn't look good on flatscreens generally, especially LCD monitors. PS2s were really designed to be used on curved CRTs, the curvature of the screen was factored in when making the games as a way of providing anti-aliasing without having to do it directly on the PS2 hardware itself. The PS2 wasn't really powerful enough to do any AA, that's why it relied on curved CRTs to provide a light blending/blurring/softening of the picture. Flatscreen LCDs highlight every last artifact and imperfection in the game, most of which wasn't really intended to be seen by the devs. The saddest part of the PS2 and getting a great picture out of it, however, is the fact that you can tell how much the vision of game devs was limited by the hardware of the time. If you load up Black in PCSX2 and scale it up to 8x resolution it's actually a fantastic looking game, not just because of the res but also because of the amount of detail that went into all kinds of small objects in the environment and the background of the game that is physically impossible to see just running it straight off the original hardware. There are tonnes of games like this on the PS2 where the backdrops and environments are actually amazing and are literally impossible to make out when run on the PS2. Resident Evil 4 is another example that comes to mind.
I had the opposite issue. PSOne games wouldn't work through component on my TV, however it did work using a PS2 to HDMI adapter. It may all depend on the brand and brand of TV.
That is correct. The reason is because PS1 games use 240p. Some modern TVs aren’t able to use 240p through component but can through composite. Bummer ik
I actually bought this thing today, and for what it is, it´s actually pretty decent for what it is, for those saying that this device doesn´t support GSM, it actually supports 720 and 1080i, also the screen crop is pretty consistent when i use this on my monitor unlike my HDTV which it was pretty inconsistent with component so pretty decent device
component cable a lot easier and looks decent on a HDTV. I might get one of these to see if it's any different. With the PS1 games it's a resolution issue with your tv in HDMI. Most PS1 games output @240p. HDMI lowest output is usually 480p. So it's a no go.
The reason most of these HDMI adapters need external power is because, if the A/V port actually outputs power, it's probably dirty/inconsistent since the console's capacitors and other components are pretty old and at least somewhat faulty. They could maybe integrate some circuitry to clean and filter the power, but this would make the device larger and more expensive, albeit not by much. I'd be pretty skeptical of any cheaper video converters that don't have a port for external power.
Yup the reason ps1 games don't show up or even some older ps2 games is because they are usually 240p/i or maybe a little higher and newer tv's/capture cards don't support a signal that low.
I got one that cane with my PS2 last week and im quite satisfied. It is a little blurry but it beats the rgb cord by a landslide. Im playing tekken 4 right now.
Aww man I wanted him to step out of that window on Black to see the guy in the tower light him but he paused just in front of it....my morbid sense of humor was not satisfied lol
some of these converters can do 240p output (required for PS1 games) while others can’t they have all of the same casing, so it’s difficult to tell which one you’re going to get
That "noise" is inherent to the component output. It actually feels like a sort of dithering pattern, and I think that may sincerely be because component gives the absolute crisper output out of all of them, to the console's detriment. I live in a region with SCART so I can use RGB on modern TV sets, and while the noise is totally gone, I feel like the output does have the tiniest bit of smeariness applied, this is probably caused by the sync on composite for the luma/white values, which gets superimposed in the overall pic. The image is still crisp and without artifacts, but you aren't getting as a direct feedback from the console as with using component, which just does sync on its own cable (or maybe, that might actually be what it's causing the noise! doubt it though). Now, saying this converter doesn't work with PS1 games is a little bit of an arbitrary statement. You read the back of the box, it said it supported 480i. Most PS1 games are 240p. So then why don't you go and try Tekken 3 (a legit PS1 game) to see how well it goes? And on the other hand you could try ICO for the PlayStation 2 (to which you said the converter would run anything from) to see if it actually displays something because *that* game runs at 240p. Cheers.
This post is not true. There is virtually ZERO different in image quality between component and RGB. If you are using good quality cables, you will not see any noise. This is just a fact. Don't use cheap cables. Sync-on-composite has no effect on your RGB signal if you are using properly shielded cables.
AndehX There is a little difference between Component and RGB-SCART (even on the same resolution). It could be due to RGB-2-YUV-conversion as well! (Regardless if you are using i.e. Speedlink- or Sony-component-cables, or a cheap one...)
RGB is lossless and displays slightly brighter as a result. pluS most TVs will support 240i over SCART but not over component, or will have less issues :)
seems cool! though as a music game fan I'm wondering if lag is at all an issue... I know I've tried to play those games before when I got my first HDTV and didn't really know about all that so, would be interesting to see how the converter handles a game like that!
I do use this adapter on my 55 Inc TV and it's been nice but I noticed that if you want the best way to play ps2 games you should be like far from your TV to get the old school CRT TV feel
Also that grainy thing on PS2 depends on the PS2 model you have. I think some of the VERY FIRST runs have it less. Then of course there is the 60GB ps3 which is backwards compat for the cleanist image
I think the reason why it might not play with Playstation games is the 240p resolution. Perhaps if you try to play some games that output in 480i then it would work. I know Tekken 3 works at that resolution if you own that.
Really great review. I wonder if it also depends on the display? I have a 28" RCA TV, and I tried both component and the HDMI Convertor, and noticed almost no real difference. If anything, component almost looks a bit better. But since it's so close, I'm going to save myself an HDMI port and outlet. ;)
You wanna get rid of the analog noise on a PS2, you get yourself some proper shielded RGB SCART cables. Looks fantastic on my Trinitron. Still waiting on the PS2 HDMI mod to be created. The folks that work on such things have just recently started with a PS1 HDMI mod.
Thought about getting this but I guess I’ll just stick with component and gsm since it doesn’t really do anything different besides let you hook up to hdmi.
Hey @MrMario2011! We are currently working on an HD-GUI for OPL! We currently can show 1024*1024 textures and stretch them however we want. There is no really optimized HiRes-Theme yet, but they might emerge within the next few days/weeks! We also run a test to combine multiple textures into one picture, so we could get a real 1920*1080-pictures (i.e. Backgrounds) working as well! However... 1024*1024 looks great already! Another thing is, that OPL got a lot updates for network/LAN/SMB! It will be a lot faster on USB and networks with a lot devices! The Network-Link is a lot more stable, so disconnects should be a thing of the past... If you compare one of the newer versions with an older version, you will notice that the FMVs on a lot games do not stutter anymore! I hope you might take a look at these things! :) 'OPL HiRes' does yield some results... Btw.: NFS is back online again, as well as some other PS2-Titles!
cjhawk67 Does not work... Look at the package... It clearly shows NTSC/480i, PAL/576i and Progressive Scan/480p... It possibly could work, if someone switches the video-mode and un-&re-plug the cable after that...
I just picked up something pretty neat about 2 weeks back a sony 24inch vega CRT with Y/Pb/Pr inputs that take the 1080i mode for gran turismo 4 and oh man does that look great. :)
Not quite sony actually made extremely high end consumer CRTs in 24-36+ inches as the Vega often improperly called the WEGA some of which even have HDMI ports. The best one ive ever seen was a model from 2009 that was 36 inches had 3 y/pb/pr, 3 svideo, 3 composite, rf, and even dual HDMI ports on a 1080i Cathode ray tube television set. Insane. I tried to get a 36 inch model not to long ago for $100 drove all the way out there with my dolly thinking i could get it off the stand and wheel it on over to and into my car and yeah nope you need a few strong friends to move it its gotta be like 300lbs i couldnt even budge the thing and im not a weak dude lol thats why i settled on the 24 inch model which doesn't have the hdmi port. People on a large scale think they are called WEGA because the V has a shadow on its logo that makes it look like a W unless you get really up close to it so when you look for them generally thats what you need to look for lol.
GSM doesn’t work above 576i unless you use gsm with component cables to force let’s say 1080i, then you can switch to the hdmi device and it’ll display the resolution almost properly except extra dark contrast. Also it does play PS1 games, the problem is PS2 yprpr runs PS1 games at 480p 30fps, most monitors and tvs do not support that output, if your monitor doesn’t support that than you can use gsm to force NTSC at x-64 and y+8, to get near center screen, some games will suffer from shrunk screen though. Also I noticed you can use the device with a ps1 console to hook up to some sound systems since it sound has nothing to do with color space.
Thanks for the insight! Seems to work then, but it needs a lot of other configuration to get up and running. I'd still opt for regular Component cables if the person buying can use them.
TomGreen 99 Well, first of... I suppose you mean 'HDCP', because I can't see how a Network-Protocoll (automatic IP-retreival) does have any influence here... Second... If so, then this isn't the fault of the capture-card but the PS3! Not the PS3 is blocked from, but the PS3 blocks... Active, passive... Third... Either way, I am sure that can be circumved easily, because I know for a matter of fact, that the exact same method has been used on a PS3 to enable Anti-Aliasing with the aid of a PCs GPU... So it must work... (in one way or the other)
Good someone reviewed this, I got one of these a while ago, this doesn't work well. It makes some of the games blurry and faded. I switched to an RGB scart cable and it cleaned the picture and the quality of the game was much better. But great review.
I bought one of these a while back. I could never get it to work; even after I discovered the undocumented need for a usb power source. I'm surprised you got it to work out of the box. I'll try again (assuming I can find what pile of spare parts I dumped it in when I got put off by it's lack of performance), doing it the way you did. With any luck I'll get some use from this e-paperweight. I'll post here when I see if it'll work now. I notice you have the 3 McBoot installed. Is this required for the converter to work?
Buy the Portta Component to HDMI Upscaler instead. you'll get the same quality and can play the few 1080i supported games on the PS2 with it. It also lets you play PS1 games as well
This ps2 to hdmi adaptor is complete trash, I regret the day I bought it. MrMario, these moving thin diagonal lines on the screen that you mention more than once, DO NOT come out of the PS2, they come out of this trashy adapter and as proof of that.... try to connect the ps2 through a quality component cable or even a cheap one (who is supposed to be the same signal the adaptor uses), you will find no diagonal lines moving across the screen there. DON'T BUY THIS TRASH unless your tv does not have component input.
i actually bought this adapter 7 months ago, never have any issues with it, im using it rn, so maybe you bought the wrong one bc like i said i been using mine for months and never had an issue. right now im using it. so if i were you i WOULDNT call it TRASH. so for the heads up its worth the money thank you very much...... so ill make sure i give people the heads up that it infact WORKS!!!!!!!!! bc all hdmi flat screen tvs and monitors work with this adapter...
I have used mine for 6 months for now. The image is clear and it doesn't give any false colors or anything. The image doesn't shake. I use it for my 50" 4K television.
The noise on the screen is caused by the USB power from the PS2, you must use a better power supply for the PS2toHDMI, the same problem is on raspberry pi, if you use a normal o bad power supply you get that noise in the screen because is not getting enough power 😉
My Life In Gaming already made a review about this ps2tohdmi, and is crap, i already have a Playstation 3D Monitor, and you can play PS 1 and PS2 games trought component cable and looks much better than this hdmi converters
Well, all my video converters if you dont give them a proper voltage or had a bad ground conection they give that noise on the image, that is why i said that
Uruguayan Style They don't if they either have a Condensator (with enough capacity) implementated... Anyway... Even with that, these adapters remain crap.
I just bought one for 12.35 definitely worth it just for the fact I can play it on a HD tv and 90 % of the TVs don’t have those coloured plugs in the back 🥺
i saw a my life in gaming episode about the ps2 & it did show a difference between component cables & this device. This did look worse next to the other footage.
ok. but it runs the PS1 games. and it looked fine to me. but yeah it may not be the greatest solution. Maybe just searc h up getting the best picture in your playstation then maybe you might find something good. (i said *MAYBE* cause some solutions maybe expensive
How does it not support ps1 games? You're not changing any of the ps2's hardware that allows it to play ps1 games. You're just converting the component signal through an HDMI adapter instead of using composite cables. Nothing else.
@Alexis Aguirre Vazquez , PS1 supports natively 240p (most games) and 480i (some games), but only through Composite, S-Video or RGB Modes & appropriate Cables. This adaptor works only by converting Component Signals - which only PS2 supports - to HDMI. Regardless of the resolution, PS1 games on the PS2 don't work with this adaptor (unless utilizing any FreeMcBoot hacks i am not aware of, or other possible Modchip or other hacks). There is another dongle similar to this, yellow-colored, which U can easily find online to buy nowadays and it also supports PS1 (i believe it either uses Composite or RGB signals converted to HDMI). But the quality of the yellow dongle compared to this one, when U use it for PS2 and PS2 games is subpar, compared to this one. Cheers
@@DarthSimous Oh yeah. I seem to have forgotten that modern TV's don't support 240p though component or HDMI. I do have a flat screen TV from 2010, so it might support that low of a resolution through either one of those 2 inputs, but I don't know yet (only one way to find out). If it doesn't, it still has ports for composite, so I can rely on those if it doesn't work out(even if it will look like complete shit). Thanks for the info.
@@alexisaguirrevazquez7900 U R welcome ... I am currently on the lookout to buy cables and-or adaptors for my PS1s & PS2s without breaking the bank with Freimeisters e.t.c. I do also have an old - but reliable - Sony flat TV 2006 model, which plays flawlesly with my PS3s at 1080i or 720p, game depending, and also looks pretty good with my Fat PS2, together with official Sony component cable, but haven't yet tried hooking-up my PS1 on it TBH (it also has Composite, S-Video, Scart inputs, but i am afraid to test the PS1 with them, lol - don't have anything decent yet, as far as cable goes, for my PS1s)... PS1 is mostly the prob, not because it is the oldest system, but because it is - as U said - the lack of native 240p support (not just flat panels or TVs, but most CRTs also can't go that low on resolution, due to 240p running at 15KHz is the main issue, i think). In any case, the Yellow dongle - PS1 & PS2 to HDMI - is quite throwing money away (the quality is plain bad) and the only (half) decent purchase for PS1 atm is a good True RGB Scart Cable, which can be a bit expensive nowadays, due to high demand & low supply. Cheers again ..
@@DarthSimous Hey, if you're reading this, I got a solution that is pretty good quality and it doesn't cost too much money. Hd retrovision component cables & retrotink 2x pro. It costs $160 before tax and will make PS1 and PS2 games look a hell of a lot better (and in the case of PS1 over component, it will actually allow you to see it on your HDTV).
I know this is old, but I just got mine yesterday and found it works even without the USB connected. I wonder, then, why does it have that power input in the first place?
I just bought one to use occasionally on my HDTV and it also works great without the need for the USB cable. I did try the USB cable, but there were no change. I'm happy with it, the picture quality is comparable to Component. Using the adapter on a PS2 slim SCPH-90004, not that it probably makes any difference, but just thought I'd mention it.
PS2 is really one of those "pre-HD" consoles. What I mean by that is, the console is made to work on a older CRT TV not a modern HDTV. I'm actually looking into getting a PVM screen to play my PS2 in RGB on a CRT style screen.
Could be the CPU, could be Graphics chip. Could be a lot of things. Next to the Dreamcast, the PS2 was one of the weakest hardware setups of that generation. Even so, the Dreamcast had the hardware to smooth it's output. The PS2 was not really designed for games first, it mostly focused on DVD support. The games are a nice addition, but that's not what Sony was thinking during development.
Dreamcast outputted everything at 480p @60fps with a VGA cable. Though only about 90% of it's library supported it. On a VGA Supported CRT monitor games looked amazing. High anti aliasing too in VGA. While not a powerhouse it was an impressive bit of gear
Tried this with my monitor but it comes up saying ‘’Not Optimum Mode, recommended 1920x1080 60hz” what’s the best thing for me to do? I’d appreciate any help! Thank you
I have receive mine but i have an issue now. I was using a av2hdmi adapter (also cheap and made in China) and 0 problems but I want to get an smaller adapter and skiping using the Av cable. So I put it today on My ps2 and tested it. It worker but a message saying "HDMI signal out of range 15.7kHz/ 50Hz" appears and I cado do nothing to make it go away. Any solution? I have an LG Flatron W2361V monitor.
the video interference also can be because the ground on the video output on the ps2, I opened mine and re-solder it and that fix it or improve the video signal, remember the ps2 is analog video signal unlike the new consoles that use HDMI witch is digital signal.
Could the be case with some, although I doubt it is with these systems. All the consoles I've used have had some noisy video output, plenty of people can confirm it as well. Unfortunately the PS2's video output quality is just not good compared to the Xbox or GameCube over Component.
MrMario2011 Yepp, the Digital-Analog-Converter suck... The image-quality even degrades a bit, over time (on all hardware which outputs an analog signal, but on a PS2 it seems to be quite noticeable!
I still have my backwards compatible 2nd generation PS3 that actually upscales and can smooth my PS2 games that I still play. I had to get it fixed or replaced by Sony 3 times and every time they offered me a newer model which I declined because of this important feature that is so valuable to my gaming experience. All of my PS3 fixes were my fault for not keeping it dust free. I learned to use air in a can after the 3rd time and haven't had anymore issues. I even ungraded the 80gb hard drive to a 500gb.
Works fine without USB power and has no issues with PAL. I used this before watching the video and my only issue is connecting it to DVI or VGA adapters
Just as a heads up: Component (YPbPr) is the 5 connector cable that can output HD. Composite is the 3 connector cable. This is a good thing that the dongle uses Component, not Composite.
So then RGB for AV cables?
i need some help with this exact unit with the colours being mostly grey on everything you can make out some colours but not a proper brighter colour like in the video. i use the ypbrprr thing on the console instead of rgb and i get a display

it's actually just upscaled 540p
The 3.5mm jack is actually super useful for splitting the audio to a speaker system for less delay in rhythm games.
I bought one of these very recently. It was like 1/3 of the original price so I thought “no harm in trying it”. And it actually looks suprisingly good! Better than when I connect via Scart or the other RGB to HDMI-converter that I have.

Plugged straight into a monitor, it usually works since PC monitors often do support 240p
Peter Haskins hey man am going to get a ps2 slim and I have a lg 4k oled display what do you recomend me buying so I can play my ps2
Peter Haskins
interesting, the adapter works for me on both slim and phat models.
Also, I didnt realize to try PS1 games on a PC monitor. Sucks that PAL games are not going to display properly, though.
You should have shown capture footage comparing both the normal cables vs that hdmi to ps2 thing.
Flutterdrive wow its called a AV
popster1man mine i forgot the name at that moment. T-T
ps2 uses component too so component and hdmi will probably be about the same quality. so could mean component for normal.
Your pfp and name are cuuute flutterdrive ^^
But yea, the difference is immense between composite and component lol
🐇
The packaging is sketchy af. I want one.
Lol
Anyone here because of the quarantine? Had to find a way to have more gamas at my disposal. And thank god it works. Some of the best $10 I've ever spent!
Also, do the analog sticks on PS2 controllers not work with this converter for some odd reason? Does anyone know?
im here lol. So wait if i get this will the analog sticks not work???? damn ive been looking how to hook up my ps2 to a 2k monitor. down-scaled to 1080 of course
Right there with you! I'm looking to get into the Xenosaga games over here.
I purchased one but I didn't get any output from mine :c
I‘m playing my ps2 games with composite cables on scart adapter. Can someone please tell me if this ps2 to hdmi converter has better quality or something than the composite to scart?
What is the output resolution?
I'm using this without the USB on the PS2 slim, I just plug it directly from the TV into the PS2 and it works great!
So it seems there isn't very much consistency between builds? That second variant you had sounds great.
Reason why ps1 games are not working is your monitor can't do 240p via hdmi.
Azoic101 Ico will have the same issue as well.
Nah, the reason is the PSX doesnt use component out.
The PS2 plays PS1 games using component just fine.
Correct. My ps2hdmi device works with ps1 240p games just fine. This guy has a Framemeister, if he tries it with that he will find it works and reports a 240p signal. Most TVs don't like 240p through hdmi, and through component it's hit and miss too
Azoic101 It won't play PS1 for me either, What's the issue? It loads the intro to the ps1 but after it just says no signal.
The most annoying thing about this adaptor is that the USB power is on the wrong side of the dongle so that you can't stand the PS2 up.
I mean if youve got one of those cheap dumb madcatz stands it helps but isnt that much better
mine somehow can work without the mini usb cable, i thought that it used to power the sound output but it isn't, so i am serching for what is it should be used
@@СтепанДубров-я7р yes same I think it just doesn’t need it at all and most people haven’t even tried to use without it haha
Interesting review. I'm currently waiting to receive my order, I'm looking forward to test it out. Thank you for this review video.
Me too :D
I’m gonna have to get back on my PlayStation.2 after watching this video lol. I love my PlayStation!
I'm going back to play the original RE3 since the remake stripped away almost everything that made the original good
About not working with PSX games, it is not the fault of the PS2HDMI, but of the TV that does not support 240p by HDMI, which is the resolution of PSX games.
My TV just keeps saying no signal when I plug it in
Bruno uno Wuno change signal from RGB to YBRP or whatever it is in PS2 settings :)
Your Tv doesn't support 480i in its HDMI port try using component cables or different TV...
We still playing socom 2 lan on xlink kai the best game alive .
Screwielu . . Wait whaat🙀
what SOCOM II ? I do got ps2 slim and SOCOM II
Wow..Before kai i was also using xbconnect for the 1st xbox, so much memories lmao
Wow I can't believe Kai Link is still up and running, this was my 1st real online experience. And it was Gran Turismo 4! I remember it took a while to set it up though, and goal to get ping as low as possible to play with less lag
I just started up socom 2 again last night on xlink kai. Super easy setup. Took maybe 15 minutes. Socom 2 is still the best game ever
Do you have any source for that claim?
I had the opposite issue. PSOne games wouldn't work through component on my TV, however it did work using a PS2 to HDMI adapter. It may all depend on the brand and brand of TV.
That is correct. The reason is because PS1 games use 240p. Some modern TVs aren’t able to use 240p through component but can through composite. Bummer ik
It gets the job done, works fine 2 ps2 usb, it will look like it did ball in the days
Thumbs up just for the ball.
I actually bought this thing today, and for what it is, it´s actually pretty decent for what it is, for those saying that this device doesn´t support GSM, it actually supports 720 and 1080i, also the screen crop is pretty consistent when i use this on my monitor unlike my HDTV which it was pretty inconsistent with component so pretty decent device
will this work on a ps2 slim?
You should have tried using GSM with it.
Someday.
I was waiting for that as well...
gran turismo 4 1080i
Well, thankfully most HDTVs here still have SCART even if they dropped component. A bit of a bummer though.
For sure, over here SCART was never ever a common thing. I only know about it thanks to the awesome retro gaming community.
We have a new 85 inch TV without it 🤦♂️ It's also wall mounted so it wouldn't fit, even if it was included.
Your video helped me I couldn't figure out the cord it came with so thanks. Playing fatal frame now and it looks sharper. Yeah!
At $8 dollars I can’t complain, looks good enough to me, and the convenience is nice too.
How was the input lag using this?
component cable a lot easier and looks decent on a HDTV. I might get one of these to see if it's any different. With the PS1 games it's a resolution issue with your tv in HDMI. Most PS1 games output @240p. HDMI lowest output is usually 480p. So it's a no go.
RaiZdbyDINGOES Technically, 480i.
New Gabe Order thanks for the correction mate. Honestly thought it was 480p.
I'd be pretty skeptical of any cheaper video converters that don't have a port for external power.
re4 and soul calibur 3 has 480p option just press triangle and circle after play station 2 logo
So does Tekken 4, shadow of colossius, Gran Turismo 4 has even 1080i
What about in PAL? I know GT4 doesn't in PAL...
LOL at people who play the crappy PS2 version of RE4
@@no.402 It's not crappy, it's just what the most the ps2 could do with it's hardware
I have a gaming monitor. After watching this video I'm looking forward to getting my ps2 adapter to play my ps2 on my monitor.
I use this exact adapter, and I’m very pleased with it.
Do your ps2 graphics look better??
I bought an actual RCA to HDMI converter/upscaler and honestly, this looks cleaner.
I would use a Sony Wega CRT for PS2.
And that is why i still keep my old CRT around.
You dont need USB power on the Slim models of the PS2
looks amazing actually! I don't know why, but I freakin' adore that ol' school raggedy, low res, blurry visuals. nice!
Wonder how it looks with the gsm graphics modes, 720p etc.
Same as with some component cables. This doesn't improve the video quality, it just let's you use HDMI easier.
AFAIK that resolution is not supported at all by this kind of adapter.
I tried one of these, but does not work with 1080i. However, NTSC and 480p work.
It looks like crap, so as gsm.
Yup the reason ps1 games don't show up or even some older ps2 games is because they are usually 240p/i or maybe a little higher and newer tv's/capture cards don't support a signal that low.
the great ps2 - the best console ever made
I got one that cane with my PS2 last week and im quite satisfied. It is a little blurry but it beats the rgb cord by a landslide. Im playing tekken 4 right now.
Does it work with a ps2 slim
@@Zzzz-rb1de yes I have a slim and it works great
Aww man I wanted him to step out of that window on Black to see the guy in the tower light him but he paused just in front of it....my morbid sense of humor was not satisfied lol
some of these converters can do 240p output (required for PS1 games) while others can’t
they have all of the same casing, so it’s difficult to tell which one you’re going to get
That "noise" is inherent to the component output.
Cheers.
zummone
The PS2's Digital-Analog-Converter just suck... But your post is true...
This post is not true. There is virtually ZERO different in image quality between component and RGB. If you are using good quality cables, you will not see any noise. This is just a fact. Don't use cheap cables. Sync-on-composite has no effect on your RGB signal if you are using properly shielded cables.
AndehX
There is a little difference between Component and RGB-SCART (even on the same resolution).
It could be due to RGB-2-YUV-conversion as well!
(Regardless if you are using i.e. Speedlink- or Sony-component-cables, or a cheap one...)
Well I use RGB, not Component, so I don't have any issues with image quality.
RGB is lossless and displays slightly brighter as a result. pluS most TVs will support 240i over SCART but not over component, or will have less issues :)
this is a really good channel and the podcast was great
Appreciate it!
seems cool! though as a music game fan I'm wondering if lag is at all an issue...
Thanks this makes me want to order one on EBay this week as I’m getting ready for my move in this summer so I can hook it up on my 4K tv
Mitchell LaBerge I just received mine off of eBay and it’s honestly not that bad, not perfect but it defiantly makes the game look a lot better.
That opening scene from GTA III...man, i was so drunk when i watched someone play this for the first time. I was hooked. Good times!
Component cables are harder to put in and pull out. take a look at a composite cable and a component cable (the end that goes to the PS)
I started cracking up when he used the converter on the ps1 18:47
Hahahahahaha, me too damn that's too funny.
But since it's so close, I'm going to save myself an HDMI port and outlet. ;)
That's exactly how it is, it won't improve your video quality any further than a good component set. If anything you might experience lower quality!
The output will still be noisy, just less so with nicer cables. We'll either need the PS2Digital or a PSX for nicer output.

'OPL HiRes' does yield some results...
Btw.: NFS is back online again, as well as some other PS2-Titles!
You should try the 1080i mode in gran turismo 4
cjhawk67
Does not work... Look at the package... It clearly shows NTSC/480i, PAL/576i and Progressive Scan/480p...
It possibly could work, if someone switches the video-mode and un-&re-plug the cable after that...
Ah dang
I just picked up something pretty neat about 2 weeks back a sony 24inch vega CRT with Y/Pb/Pr inputs that take the 1080i mode for gran turismo 4 and oh man does that look great. :)
cjhawk67
Is that one of these PVRs where you can switch sync via button and so on? Yeah, these are great!
Both of you tried 1080i and it worked?!
Thank you. Works perfectly. 💋
6:39 How did you do this? I tried connecting it to my computer but it didn't show my ps2 video.
FYI to anyone, it does work on ps3!
TomGreen 99
What should that be useful for?
Alex J Because ps3 is blocked by capture cards...
TomGreen 99
Huh? Why? Who? Which?
Then just use one of the Graphic card's HDMI as 'in' (if it supports it)...
Alex J no dude, dhcp blocks output!!!
TomGreen 99
Well, first of...
It's working on PS3
I bought one of these a while back. I could never get it to work; even after I discovered the undocumented need for a usb power source.
I'm surprised you got it to work out of the box.
I'll try again (assuming I can find what pile of spare parts I dumped it in when I got put off by it's lack of performance), doing it the way you did. With any luck I'll get some use from this e-paperweight.
I'll post here when I see if it'll work now.
I notice you have the 3 McBoot installed. Is this required for the converter to work?
Not required.
Oh, of course... I need an HDMI cable now.
I'm very happy with the adapter cleans the image up nicely
Giorgos Tsamouris my third party component cable gives trashy colors. This adapter will work beautifully for what it is.
Contrast has not changed you ?. I used the component converter to hdmi, the contrast changed very badly.
The noise on the screen is caused by the USB power from the PS2, you must use a better power supply for the PS2toHDMI, the same problem is on raspberry pi, if you use a normal o bad power supply you get that noise in the screen because is not getting enough power 😉
Doesn't change a thing on a PS2...
My Life In Gaming already made a review about this ps2tohdmi, and is crap, i already have a Playstation 3D Monitor, and you can play PS 1 and PS2 games trought component cable and looks much better than this hdmi converters
Uruguayan Style
I agree... However I wrote 'doesn't change a thing 'because of the USB-comment'... The quality remains crap with these adapters...
Well, all my video converters if you dont give them a proper voltage or had a bad ground conection they give that noise on the image, that is why i said that
Uruguayan Style
They don't if they either have a Condensator (with enough capacity) implementated... Anyway... Even with that, these adapters remain crap.
I just bought one for 12.35 definitely worth it just for the fact I can play it on a HD tv and 90 % of the TVs don’t have those coloured plugs in the back 🥺
they lowered the price on it! Now it's around 4 bucks
at 6:30 mark when you click rgb and nothing happens, what do you need to do moving forward to make it work?
shame it doesn't do ps1. it does everything else just fine though. not a bad price either.
Solidius T ps2 plays ps1 games with every ps1 accessory
Just play Ehrgeiz or Tekken 3, since they have 480i output anyways.
i saw a my life in gaming episode about the ps2 & it did show a difference between component cables & this device. This did look worse next to the other footage.
you can play ps1 games on the ps3 so that problem may be sorta solved
That's not solving the problem, that's just getting a PS3 LOL
ok. but it runs the PS1 games. and it looked fine to me. but yeah it may not be the greatest solution. Maybe just searc h up getting the best picture in your playstation then maybe you might find something good. (i said *MAYBE* cause some solutions maybe expensive
I watched this because i was thinking of becoming a retro streamer mainly playing PS2 games that didn't get a remake/remastered version.

forgot to post it here
@@darthmemeious9526 Boo lol

Hd retrovision component cables &
retrotink 2x pro. It costs $160 before tax and will make PS1 and PS2 games look a hell of a lot better (and in the case of PS1 over component, it will actually allow you to see it on your HDTV).
Use your PS3 to play PS1 games. No adapter needed, lol.
not all of them work. Tekken 3 gets fucked up on PS3
Alternativly use your PS1!
I know this is old, but I just got mine yesterday and found it works even without the USB connected. I wonder, then, why does it have that power input in the first place?
Maybe some need more power?
I just bought one to use occasionally on my HDTV and it also works great without the need for the USB cable. I did try the USB cable, but there were no change. I'm happy with it, the picture quality is comparable to Component.
Using the adapter on a PS2 slim SCPH-90004, not that it probably makes any difference, but just thought I'd mention it.
Adapter ≠ Converter. And this is a converter, not an adapter.
This convertor looks cool but sadly it does not upconvert or deinterlace 240p & 480i to 480p,
But other then that, it's a good device.
So will it work on Benq 2470HL?
Or do I have to buy any upscaler along with this adapter?
PS2 is really one of those "pre-HD" consoles. What I mean by that is, the console is made to work on a older CRT TV not a modern HDTV. I'm actually looking into getting a PVM screen to play my PS2 in RGB on a CRT style screen.
The actual video output isn't very good either when compared to Xbox or GameCube in component. Not sure why that is, unfortunately 😐
Siknik64 Gran Turismo 4 says hi
Gran Turismo don't mean shit if the signal quality is bad.
Ik this is an old video but mine isn’t working
Try a ps3 with it
It's for PS2 sillygoose
Y😑
I saw some of these adapters on eBay for $5 (significantly less than shipping component cables to Canada). Wish me luck!
Tried this with my monitor but it comes up saying ‘’Not Optimum Mode, recommended 1920x1080 60hz” what’s the best thing for me to do? I’d appreciate any help! Thank you
Wow black looks good
random question, is it possible to connect your PS2 to a direct Laptop for playing and recording gamesplays?
Is there any input lag? Thanks for the video!
Liked and subbed. Great videos. Got the nostalgia feels when you grabbed Xenogears
This thing is great!! I love that it can use it on my big tv. And it looks really good
Really? Can I just use it with 4:3 aspect ratio and does it look better like that?

Yepp, the Digital-Analog-Converter suck...
For any fans of Gregorys Horror Show it looks great through this and normal component
