PS2 SATA Network Adapter - Overview & Testing with FreeMCBoot

  • Within the past year or so I had softmodded a PS2 with FreeMCBoot after tracking down a brand new IDE drive. The problem I had was this hard drive was always a bit flaky and recently ran into a problem in which almost any time I utilized half the space on the drive it would error out on WinHIIP and brick until I reformatted it and started over. Looking into upgrading/replacing the drive I noticed that getting a decently high capacity IDE drive would cost more than it is worth, that's why I went with the route of trying out a third party SATA network adapter.

      You have to format the HDD with Wiinhip by choosing it first (you get the PS2 format error) and then press the format drive button at the bottom.

      If I remember correctly, 'rule of rose' had issues in older OPL-Versions, but that might be fixed on newer builds.
      Just look up the OPL-Betas or 'daily builds'. 😉
      Sometimes there are multiple new revisions 'per day' and sometimes there are no new builds for weeks (very seldom even months).

      Absolutely. I worked for a company in the early 00's who used Dell hardware and all the desktop machines came fitted with Maxtor drives, and they all started failing around the same time after about 4 months of use, and I mean all of them. I even remember the drive model number because it was the bane of our lives for so long - 2B020H1. Dell ended up giving our company compensation because of it. As well as this, every other Maxtor drive I've used has also failed in a very short space of time. Maxtor are hot garbage.

    You can also buy mod kits to change the original Sony adapter from ide to sata. The conversion is pretty simple and straight forward. The mod works fine with my PS2 and a 1TB WD Blue HDD. One caveat is that the drive is pretty loose and can flop around easily. I used a small folded paper to provide light pressure to fix that.
    Not only do games load faster, but there is less wear on the PS2 optical drive.. a common point of failure for that system. It is also nice being able to take 200+ games without carring alot of stuff!
    Each game takes 4-8Gb of storage on the console, for reference.

    • @tnaplastic2182
      @tnaplastic2182 7 лет назад +8

      Actually we made some tests around 10 years ago... The result was that from ~250 games the average size-ratio is 2.36/2.4GB! ;)
      1TB-HDD could hold around ~380 games in its original form (like on CD/DVD). But PS2-Images often have dummy-files or empty sectors which can be ripped from the image without actually ripping anything of the games content! i.e. Eye Toy Play uses over 4GB as image, but could very simply be ripped onto a CD without excluding or ripping any content... and there are quite some games where you can do this.
      Thus even more games are possible and the average file-size of a game probably comes quite close to 2GB. This tests btw. already did include GT4, GoW1+2 and another few DVD9-games!

    If you need an Ethernet adapter you can also modify the original Sony adapter and remove the IDE board and swap it out with a SATA board they sell on Ali Express it works great and I can also stream my PS2 games from my PC if I want to as well as have a way to system link PS2 (In the few titles that support it through ethernet) It also still keeps your adapter looking official as it still has the Ethernet/dial up ports.

    I know this is old, but I'm going to add my .02 anyway. I had also had an issue with the power plug spacing on mine. For some reason, there is quite abit of lateral play in the mounts for the power plug. So all I had to do was loosen it up a little and cut the shielding to allow it to move far enough over to plug in. Worked like a charm!
    You can also get a SATA plug sub-board that replaces the IDE one in the original Sony network adapter. I think that's the route I will be heading when this drive dies. Having the network connectivity is why I got an original one.

  • @YoItsTrev
    @YoItsTrev 7 лет назад +9

    I had one of those WD IDE drives. I was able to use it by taking off the metal shielding plate from the network adapter, and it gave the connectors a little bit of wiggle room to be able to mate up to the HDD.

      No hard drive uses the 3.3V line. In the early days everyone was powering their SATA drives from the 5V and 12V molex connectors using passive adapters, and so it stuck that nobody put 3.3V rails on their drives to maximize compatibility.
      In fact, the 3.3V rail has now been coopted for PWDIS (power disable) in the SATA 3.3 spec, so that if you just put a dumb 3.3V on a hard drive with a PWDIS rail, the drive will not even spin up.

    Alternatively, if you aren't aware, there are kits to replace the IDE interface on the OEM network adapter with a SATA interface. No soldering required, it's impossible to place the cables in the wrong ports interally. I am using such a system no (OEM network adapter, 3rd party SATA kit) and it works great. Simply partially disassemble a few things on the OEM adapter and plug the new item in, then reassemble.

    I'm using a Maxtor in my PS2 right now, and the moment I heard the words come out of your mouth, I knew your problem was not with Maxtor.
    The PS2 does not do well with 48-bit LBA. You need to do complicated patches that, from my experience, don't work well at all. The reason that Maxtor gets corrupted at 50% is the same exact reason Windows 98 would lose its shit processing data at 50%.
    For anyone aspiring to do a soft/hardmod PS2, DO NOT BUY A HARD DRIVE BEYOND 137 GB. SATA or otherwise, patched or not, you'll only struggle. If you need more than 137 GB, look into doing a network share or buy a USB hard drive. Yes, USB 1.0 is trash, but I'd rather have slower load times than reformatting my hard drive because I made a mistake in capacity.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  6 лет назад +4

      I'm going to respectfully say you're incorrect on that, I've used multiple other drives bigger than 137 GB with no issues. I have a 1 TB in my PS2 that I use regularly, 0 issues adding games to it or playing off the thing. The only drives I've messed with that require any complicated patching as you've mention have been 2 TB.

      However you should not use more than 1TB, because only very few apps (wLE, OPL, HDD-OSD?, etc.) support 32Bit-adressing instead of 31Bit-adressing... (so doubling the addressable sectors on the HDD)

      Pros of LAN on a PS2:
      -installing and extracting games from and to internal HDD via LAN
      -streaming games (PS1&PS2) from LAN (or from the internet, if you have a server online and can modify your router to show that folder in your LAN as an SMB-Connection, for example by connecting via VPN)
      -Start applications from LAN via OPL (currently no other apps, which can load APPS from LAN, AFAIK)
      -Stream movies/music/etc. from LAN
      -Internet-Radio (for example via 'MyPS2'-App)
      -playing games online, either via recreated servers, or via xLink-Kai
      -better development-environment, where you can easily start fresh compiled applications just directly via command from PC or remotely control your PS2 via PS2Link!

    I had the issue of my hard drive not quite fitting to the OEM sony network adapter. The ports are designed to have some wiggle room to help them fit different drives, but the wiggle is reduced by the metal shroud. You can cut a bigger slot for the IDE port or remove the shroud entirely and you can get just a bit extra room that may make all the difference.

    My experiences with Maxtor drives were usually positive (I've had more dead Samsung, Seagate and WD drives percentage wise), but I found that the power connector pins on most models were bad and that would lead to hdd failiure. I've had 3 Maxtor drives that needed a custom job resoldering of the power pins, one just fell off when pulled out of the machine, the others had motors powering off at random (the click of death).
    All 3 never had issues after a bit of touchup on the power pins, one 120GB lasted me for 11 years and got resold in a retro machine, one is still in one of my retro machines, and the third I burned the electronics on with a bad IDE to USB adapter, only to recently replace the board and have it run flawlessly (its funny to have a hard drive that old that has such little working hours, its at around 450h after 14 years :D).
    The power pins on all of those were worse made than the pins on the cheap chinese extension cords I ended up using as the pin donors, extremely thin and flimsy.

All sustained quite a bit of damage but the Maxtor didn't look too beat up, and ended up breaking at least a couple rocks.
