- FreeDVDExploit is a new hack for the Sony PlayStation 2 that has been discovered by Security Researcher CTurt - it allows the user to boot homebrew games on an unmodded PS2 console via DVD Player exploits. In this episode we take a closer look at how it works and what I think I means for the future of homebrew on the PS2.

coolll
Now a good entry point to modify blank systems for free McBoot. But it would be even more awesome if finally someone could work on an optical drive emulator, with built in CF or SD card or HDD support. That would mean no more compatibility issues and no more choppy FMVs.
Yeah I just tried it on my white slim, worked flawlessly!

ideally someone just needs to make a bootable DVD that can load FreeMcboot onto the PS2 memory card and then it'll open the flood gates for a lot of people
Since the exploit allows elf binaries to load something like this shouldn’t be too hard, you just burn the freemcboot installer onto a disc
Or if it could be pointed to a USB thumb drive :)

Thanks for helping me with my PS3 exploits
Burning a disc that is bootable by a game console is indeed the "holy grail" of modding techniques. This discovery would have been huge back in the day. Reminds me of the Dreamcast exploits.
really makes me wonder why it took 20 years for someone to find this. this is such an obvious way in, and DVD was cracked wide open by the time the PS2 became a thing. a basically free software hack would've been nice back in the day. i wonder if any other consoles have exploitable stuff in their media players, especially the 360...
@@fake12396 hopefully something as simple as this works for the newer consoles coming out.. wishful thinking.
Thank God it didn’t though, look at sega now, once the console stops being stocked on the shelves then great but in its life cycle would kill a company.
@@garystinten9339 i see potential... as system apps they might give you more access compared to a savegame hack or something. looking at the og xbox leak, the DVD code isn't even microsoft's, it's by STM, so assuming it carried over to the 360 there could be weaker code there. for later consoles, blu rays are waay more complex and basically run java, so lots of attack surface there. as far as i'm aware it's an unexplored attack vector really, maybe it has something, maybe it doesn't.
@@Master_Psyper piracy played it's part sure, but there were many more factors that led to sega's console downfall. everyone had a chipped PSX and a more modern example is the switch, yet both companies are doing just fine. i wouldn't say that piracy can kill a console manufactuter.

"There won't be any repercussions from Sony"
Until they come up with the PS2 classic
So no repercussions at all
@@AJA_974 bet the ps2 "classic" will unfortunately run remastered San Andreas rather than the OG San Andreas orange world. It will piss everyone off. Calling it now
@@slightlyamusedblackkidfrom9153 I bet neither the remastered SA nor the original will be featured on the PS2 Classic
most ps2 titles arent really suited for the classic treatment, first off you have the problem of playstation owners rarely owning the same games, on nintendo consoles most people tended to have most nintendo first party games, this to this day does not happen with playstation (or xbox for that matter). san andreas is a game many owned, i understand that, but rockstar is not gonna let sony put it unless they pay a shit ton of money, which would make the system way too expensive, then you need to consider that classic systems are something you mainly buy
-as a display piece
-to pull up ocassionally and use for a couple hours
-to take arround with you to play with some friends when you visit
it would work as a display piece, dont get me wrong, but look at the best selling games for the ps2, they are multiple JRPGs, Gran Turismo, GTA, God of War, etc, not the sort of game you can just pick up and play for 1 or two hours, then forget about it, as for taking it arround, the slim ps2 is already good for that. honestly if they made me in charge of making a ps2 classic, i would just make a regular ps2 slim with a small ssd and wifi, displayport (or hdmi because the sort of people who would buy this are normies) and have psn to buy and download games, make it so if you buy it for the ps2 classic you can play it on ps4 and ps5 as well
slightly amused black kid from the suburbs .... Forget San Andreas..... If it doesn’t have Vice City it’s going to be DOA.
Pretty inspiring to see that a researcher can still contribute to the cause 20 years after it started. Congratulations to all the giants who have poked into this system to get where we are today.

Don't forget the PSP with Pandora's Battery. This was a similar "stuff of dreams"
No joke i remember that mod good ol times
That one still blows my mind to this day. I remember when it first happened and it was revealed everyone that was a member of the M33 (was that the name?) hacking team were major PSP Hackers that we all knew and respected, but it turns out they were all secretly working together under pseudonyms!!!
The hack itself was amazing. A battery based hack using the method Sony used to repair softlocked PSPs. Just amazing. Something nobody would have ever guessed.
The variety of soft hacking methods is astonishing when you think back. It's not just classic USB transfer files across to hack.
Battery hack on PSP. Memory card swap on PSP. Game based hacks. Network based on Vita and WiiU. USB boot based on PS3. JoyCon on Switch. Disc swap on PS2 to install Memory Card exploit. Now we have normal DVD exploit on PS2.
I bought a device to change my battery into one and put it into service mode and mod it. And once it was, the PSP became simply incredible and Sony couldnt do anything about it.
Those were great times.
When I was opening up the PSP battery casing to crush that one pin, I accidentally pierced the battery with an x-acto knife **very specifically trying not to** pierce the battery with an x-acto knife. Nothing dangerous happened besides a little hiss from it (and whatever carcinogens I inhaled), but I had to swing the dead battery's circuit board around for the CFW install and keep it pressed into the contacts while it installed. Kind of harrowing. Good times!
Kind of, but you still needed a CFW to produce the battery in the first place. This PS2 exploit is insane though -- just one file on a burnt disc to blow the console wide open from stock. I'm curious to see what kind of softmodding this opens up.
Props to CTurt for their hard work getting this done for the community!

@KonicavaBR what about online streamed movies you buy? its forever yours as long as you have the password to your account.
@@MarkARoutt Unfortunately there's nothing to stop the streaming platform from going out of business, or to stop carrying the film, or to update to a modified/edited "PC" version of the film. Owning digital only means you only own the right to access it on their system as long as they choose to carry it. It doesn't guarantee us the right to a particular version of the film. I had a digital copy of the Battle of the Five Armies and when the platform it was on (Ultraviolet) went under, the digital copy was gone. I had transferred everything over to VUDU before this happened, but it got lost in the shuffle. The only way I can get it back is to buy it again, or email Warner Media and plead my case. I have the Blu-Ray and DVD, so I haven't bothered, but just to illustrate that it can (and does) happen with something you technically own.

5:00 I hate to be nit picky, but I'll leave this for anyone using/going to use Free McBoot.
I'd recommend that you configure Free McBoot to run off of Memory Card slot 2 rather than 1. The reason being that quite a few PS2 games default to saving onto Card 1 and have no support for Card 2. Play a few of those games with Free McBoot on Card 1 and you'll be out of space real fast.
I always pull the card out as soon as the game starts to load and then replace it with a card I use for game saves only.
Alternatively, use OPL for your legally owned copies and set it to use a virtual memory card on a USB or Hard drive.
Unless you buy a 64MB MC
Or even 128, but then goodbye saving/loading times 😂

This is really cool. I can see another use of this, other than charging FreeMcboot or backups. Since it can run homebrew, this exploit open the door to new, easy commercial release of games for the PS2, in the vein of what we see for older, cartridge based console. With this, everybody can create a game and easily make it run on stock PS2s.

5:07 You absolutely DO NOT need a modded system to generate a Free McBoot memory card. All you need to do is the disk swap trick which you can do very easily on fat PS2s without opening the console. Hey there Great Video💯 I really appreciate all the effort and time you put into your video's.😊
To this day, the PS2 is still my favorite console of all time. I had my start as far back as the Atari 2600, then on to a 7800, a NES and then SNES. By the late 1990s, I got into the Playstation. All those consoles to that point were used. The PS1 was what got me into 3d games and wanting more realism in games and more mature titles. So, when the Playstation 2 was announced, that was my first, and to date only, brand new console I ever owned. I put a PS2 on layaway about 6 months after initial release, paid it off and it was GLORIOUS! I miss my PS2, but consoles now just do not really excite me. The PS3 was nice, my roommates and I still have an early PS3 with the full PS2 hardware inside, but it needs to be repaired, the PS4 and now the PS5, really do not excite me. These days, I stick to PC gaming. However, I would love to have a PS2 again and a SNES. I am glad to see that this exploit has been found finally. I may just have to find myself another PS2......
Snes & PS2, best combo!

Probably a super dumb question, but would this allow me to play Japanese PS2 games in my US console?
Possible I think from what I can see.
You wouldn't be able to play an original japanese disc with any softmod. You could use this method though to install a proper softmod (FreeMCBoot) and then play a ripped ISO of the game using OpenPS2Loader. Or you could patch the ISO such that it is bootable using this method and then burn it to a disc.

This is great news and pretty cool! Regarding newer firmware exploits, I feel like they're going to get more complicated on more recent systems, because there are systems in place like stack smashing protection, position-independent code and the likes that make exploitation much harder. We don't rely on programmers to secure their software that much anymore (thankfully - to err is human after all). If anything, the release of this exploit could be the event that triggers OEMs to use safer compilation flags for their code... but I suspect this has been the case for a while.

We need a update on the progress of further development on other firmware models of the PS2, great video man this truely is the holy grail, can’t believe it took 2 decades for discovery. I have a freemcboot and honestly don’t like it, I don’t want to use the interface and my son isn’t old enough to figure it out at times, I want him to just put a game in and play it just like we did when we were kids
I still have a PS2. Very Fun playing my SSX games. Soul Calibur lll. KH1 & 2. GTA San andreas.. I love this Discovery. Keep Going Dont give Up!!!!
Wow even 20 years later this is still quite an impressive discovery, with some huge potential too!😮👏
The reader died on mine. It's still lying around at my parents' house.
RIP buddy. You are missed.
Open it and clean the lazer with a cotton soft cloth. While open put game inside see if it sorts the problem. If not Four screws around the cd-rom first tighten them then try game again. Still not sorted try loosening (4screws) not fully but a bit then try game agian. Should work if not new reader or ps2 of ebay.
Or use network to load games with OPL. It's simpler than you expect.
It's a kinda hard mod, but you can make it run from an HDD.
Suman Roy The laser deck (laser, worm motor, spindle motor, and base) is about $30+ or so dollars on ebay. Find out your ps2 model number first. You can also find parts on richspsxparts.com. Its not hard to install on your own.
Fixing it's not worthy, just mod it with free mcboot
This might blow the PS2 homebrew scene wide open. I hope it does.
Might end up seeing DVD releases of homebrew games like you do with the Sega Dreamcast now! I might even start researching game development for the PS2.
Man I slept on the modding looks so good
This feels like an unsolved Easter Egg got finally found.
Something new to mess with! Haunting Ground, you're finally gonna get to run on my PS2!
Rules of Rose???
lol, i bought a free mcboot memory card a few months back specifically for Haunting Ground and other survival horror rarities. Free McBoot memory cards are available on amazon for cheap. Totally worth it if you've been considering it.
Yeah, Kuon, Rule of Rose, Haunting Ground. These are all over 100 dollars. It would be exciting to download and play these without breaking the bank.
Great effort, huge work for keeping PlayStation alive! Big news, indeed! Quick question: Would a PAL PS2 run an NTSC game, in that way?
Not very many things makes me feel old, but realizing PS2 is 20 years old sure did it! Wow.
I've PS2 Slim for around 10 years, it's unmodified. But I can play the games from the burned DVDs and in some cases from the CDs too (Contra: Shattered Soldier
). It's PS2 Slim PAL India. I had purchased it sealed so I'm sure it's unmodified. Can someone explain to me the reason?
Some countries sold PS2's pre-installed with modchips, like Brazil and India
@@crustjunkie in all europe ...hah..i buy with chip ps2...in the store, with waranty..that was 2005
Repackaged? Fake seal?
@@crustjunkie Same goes with Indonesia
@@wibs0n68 betul kak, semua console di glodok hasil refurbish. nggk ada yg perawan.
Funny thing, I actually thought "Buffer Overflow" when you first said the exploit was by DVD. LOL
I like freemcboot, I bought it on a memory card online for $10 and I have a fat PS2 and an original network adapter so I have a hard drive inside, it's a bit slow but I don't need to worry about the disk drive. The guy who made this hack is a beast though, it must have taken so much work, good video, really good for slim modders with old firmware.
Amazing! My dream is a optimized Amiga emulator for the PS2, would be soo cool! Perfect interlaced tv output.
The first thing I thought of while watching this was "Wait, that means that you could potentially run the McBoot loader install homebrew app to prep a memory card WITHOUT needing a chipped system!"
death, taxes, and piracy.
And we are all considered winners
I don't get it
@@EpicTyphlosionTV read it backwards, (piracy, taxes and death) its all you'll get from it :)
@@EpicTyphlosionTV The only certain things in life.
What is taxes?
Wow that's pretty cool! It would be nice to be able to play some of the rarer games on the console.
Thank You Very Much. I'm sorry I don't have more right now, as I took a look at the two color codes and pricing. The Holy Grail, huh?
FreeMCBoot Memory Cards are actually easy to get hold of, and once you have it, you can make more.
However. would be interesting to see if this runs on the 90xxx series
The 90xxx series has the fortuna project now, its running on my 2009 90004
@@RFLCPTR Cool, I didn't know that, been out the PS2 lop for a couple of years :)
@@RFLCPTR fortuna still needs you to copy the files to the memorycard somehow though, so you need access to a modded ps2 before being able to do anything
@@davidoli Nope, I did the glorious swap trick with 007 Agent in Fire
@@RFLCPTR that's still not ideal since you have to buy the game first. I'm really glad FreeDVDBoot is a thing now, you can add ulaunchelf to it then install freemcboot or just run your stuff off an USB stick
Big ups to my boy CTurt
No
Thanks for this video, I still have an unmodded PS2 in 2020
I just tried it on my PAL SCPH-90002 with 3.11U DVD and it worked perfectly for me.
