Doug, I heard about your channel from a friend about a month or two ago, since then I have watched every video in the "building a 74' sail boat" playlist in order, just finishing. I love watching how you interact with your grandson Aden, It reminds me of how my father interacted with me and it's made a huge difference in my life, as i'm sure it will his. Kids are far more capable than people think, my father always trusted me with far more than most parents would have and had me working side by side with him similar to you. Commending Aden's efforts but expecting more out of him and teaching him to strive for greatness. "No participation trophies here." He seems like a great kid who will grow up to have an even better work ethic. I am currently working on my bachelors in Mechanic Engineering, I'm finishing my second year right now. I'm pretty covered up with homework and work this semester but I would be honored to come out and volunteer with you some this summer! I too love to build, I have since i was a child. Your ingenuity and stick-to-itiveness is inspiring, keep it up!

I know this is dated but I use ultracal 30 for a few things one of which is metal casting. I only cast aluminum parts but I can tell you that when I mix UC30 I do not follow the manufacturer's recommended ratio of water to UC30. More on that later.
Firstly, I in fact add sand (play sand) to the mix at a ratio of 1:1 (by volume) to start and if I'm short on quantity I'll favor sand over more UC30 up to a ratio of 1 part UC30 to 1.5 parts sand.
The reason I do this is as you found out UC30 literally falls apart at the burnout temperatures in "lost" processes.
I'm using lost PLA and I raise the temperature of my mold to near 1000^F for the burnout. When using only UC30 (without sand) the molds will crack and sometimes they'll just crumble into pieces.
So, when I'm ready to mix the concoction I gather up 1 part sand to 1 part UC30 (by volume) and add the mix to a small amount of water. Here's where I deviate from the manufacturers mix recommendation. I mix by eye and feel such that the mix is at the consistency of mayonnaise or honey. I find that I have approximately 30~45 minutes of working time before the mixture kicks off. I've been successful using this process for many molds.
I have tried plaster but I find the working time far too short to get a usable mix because it begins hardening before I can get the part submerged into the mix.
I hope this helps in the future. It should work for lost wax for I believe that lost wax requires a lower burnout temperature than PLA.....

It would be more efficient if you make the mold by immersing the wax in clay mud, then leaving the mud under the sun to dry, then burn the soil so that the wax melts and leaving a cavity in the soil mold, then you can pour molten metal into and will get printouts that are almost perfect, this is the traditional way from my country Indonesia.

It was 1978 and I was in the 7th. grade when I went on a 5 day Windjammer Barefoot cruise out of Nassau with my parents aboard their flagship the SV Fantome , a 4 mast Barq that was still powered by its original twin Polar diesels. We travelled only at night and during the day we were dropped off at a different island every day. While we were on the island and the Fantome was anchored just off the beach the ships crew worked like ants doing maintenance on the ship while we were gone. When the Seeker finally meets the water and is fitted out the work on her won't stop , it will never stop - the ocean will make sure of that. That cruise on the Fantome was no place for a kid like me in the 7th. grade. Today it would be called a booze cruise but I think a better way to describe it would be a maritime version of Studio 54. You Tube has some good videos of her.

5:25 - In bullet casting, we call that 'getting visited by the Tinsel Fairy'.
Usually reserved for outside smelting when you throw something wet in the melting pot or, rarer and more exciting, melting range scrap and getting a 'dud' round mixed in. A .45 ACP cooking off in a dutch oven full of lead is impressive.
But yeah. Ingots with some moisture mixed in getting dropped in the bullet furnace - KA POW.

Couple of quotes for the wheel. I have a big document of quotes i like but ive picked out a selection of the ones about adventure.
    “Because it's there”
    George Mallory
    “There are everests everywhere”
    Brian Blessed
“One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it's worth watching”
    Gerard Way
“That's what life is, you have a bunch of dreams and you do what you can to make them come true”
    Jeb Corliss
“Human beings are works in progress, that mistakenly think they're finished”
    Dan Gilbert
“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.”

here's a couple more quotes I came across with the whole vision of Seeker in mind.. From the late Carl Sagan...for your consideration:
Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.
(I think this one really captures the essence of Seeker; just building Seeker has been an exercise in making your dreams manifest.. :) )
Across the sea of space. The stars are other suns. We have traveled this way before. And there is much to be learned

Fun stuff! Ya know..the way Hugh hopped away from that bucket I think he has the makings to be a fine Flamenco dancer. OLE!
That design for the ship's wheel has me concerned in that if you hit rough seas or the rudder takes a jerk all those pointy bits might snag in clothing or cause lacerations. Maybe make the dragon bit as a cover that can be removed if needed.

Hi Doug, found your project a few weeks back and are hooked, looking forward to the next instalment.
I keep seeing your cut off metal band saw, I have one just like it and used to have a homemade table that was clamped in its vice to make it more like a regular bandsaw, all you need is a steel post (6 x 5 box or simalar) the same height as the lower blade guide when the blade section is in the raised position, weld a plate to the top of the post with a slit for the blade, maybe easierthan how I see you using it in this video for cutting the dead lights. Sure you have thought of this already though.
PS, I dont think you fund raising merchandise is that over priced when you compare it to the crap they offer at some tourist attractions here in the UK.
    Regards to the Grinder God.

Maybe this could be a good quote to go on the helm, quote by Leonardo D'Avinci about the desire to fly...
“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever
walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been,
and there you will always long to return.”
You could modify the quote into a more aquatic-nautical version like:
“Once you have tasted the salty waters and felt the waves, you will forever
walk the earth with your eyes turned seaward, for there you have been,
and there you will always long to return.”
Ik wens u een behouden vaart !

    Hi,
Super great AND scary video, thank you so much. Your heart must have been in your throat as you did these steps!
Of course as you have said several times, doing thing ‘here’ in a safe place where you have at least some control, will allow you to be sure you can carry some brass or lead as well as the ‘cooker’, which I have forgotten the name of, or whatever and know you can reproduce whatever you need if something breaks.
Truly wonderful stuff,. I see others casting little lead cars but no, you choose to do it seemingly the hard way making you own Capstans to fit on a boat eight times the size of my garden! Tremendous luck finishing, and not least moving the boat to water and getting it to your first port of call.
    Take care
sincere good luck with each and every one of all the many choices yet to be made.

thats an awesome looking boatwheel , i was looking at the stand and was thinking some pilar covering with woodcarvings on it maibe some fishes that are swimming in a fishtank or neptune mermaids kind of stuff , the wheel looks a lot better though
i hope that centrehub will be casted in different metals (copper bronze brass and tin maibe and epoxied or soldered together )
i'm suprized youre going to use steel cable for the link between rudder and wheel , i was thinking more like solid rods with rosejoints or chain with some sort of tensioner

best you drink the flagon dry.”

    Greg Hamerton,
    Second Sight
“When it comes to fighting for your dreams, be a dragon. Breathe fire.”

How about a quote from Shakespeare for the wheel inscription? Something from "The Tempest" might be cool - either in entirety or in part: "How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,
    That has such people in't!”

One can totally see the boat from Google images, and it would've been easy to just type in SVSeeker. You rock man. I wonder if you will set sail towards the end of this year?
I ship out for Navy May 4th. My training will be machine work. Diesels, pneumatic pumps, hydraulics, & much more. (MMS)
