  • Sure is a lot of boat building stuff in this video. Loving this Spring weather and the progress. Many thanks to Bart, Paul, Nathan, David, a team from Oneok and Betsy for making it happen. And thanks too, for our viewers and supports. Keep it positive and keep the dream happening.

Boat looks great. Been watching for a while now. I built a 40ft steel ketch a few years ago. Might be a bit late but it's worth casting steel into the anodes around the bolt holes, or a strap between bolt holes so that once the anode starts getting eaten away and the zinc/aluminium dissolves, the steel keeps it secure and we'll bonded to the hull.

Doug, instead of using ESC key in Mach3, you could use spacebar.
Spacebar is Feedhold. It works by executing the current line of G-code and then pausing after it is done. This way you don't interrupt in the middle of a movement, but get a controlled stop without the drift issue.

I see Doug's plan now. He's going to keep casting to fill up the yard with sand and bring the beach to the boat. On the epoxy and MDF. Stray shellac if sprayed heavily with saturate the MDF and make for a harder surface to machine.

Friend of mine who does a lot of metal casting told me that with regard to Soduim Silicate / CO2 moulds, if you add a half a percent of glucose powder to the sand before you add the sodium silicate, the sand mould will disintegrate more rapidly in water when you're removing it from the moulded part at the completion of the pour. The bloke in question has been a foundry metallurgist for 40 years and has specialised in brass, bronze and what you yanks call "Ulloominum". I have no reason to doubt him. He also said that if you pack a thin layer of very fine facing sand on the surface of the pattern you will get a very fine finish on the moulded part which will require a lot less cleaning up work. If you feel so inclined to have a look at the way he operates, you can find him by typing "olfoundryman' in the RUclips search box. Another bloke who really knows what he's doing is a bloke called "luckygen1001" He works with Cast iron.

Shellac or sanding sealer is also a good way to seal the cut surface of MDF. It's cheaper than 5 minute epoxy and dries in seconds. Worth a go if you do that again I think.

    Hey Doug,
I'd try routing the letters in PE (polyethylene) sheet. You can get them at places that sell machining plastics and it's relatively cheep (you can also make your own from old bottles but that would unnecessary complicate the matter). Finish should be quite smooth and require no mucking about with epoxy :)

a good trick for drilling lots of holes to depth 'freehand': instead of the tape, take a piece of scrap wood, and cut it to the length between the end of your tape and the drill chuck, then drill through it in that direction, and use it as a physical stop. This is nice because you don't have to watch it as close, and and unlike tape, it won't creep and slide if it gets warm. (or get your drill bit all gummy)

you suddenly stop the stepper mother overruns it position and Mach3 thinks it's at. You can lower the rapids in the motor tuning page. I find that I usually reload the program after every time I stop a program mid stream. Dave

One thing I thought I'd mention even if it's too late but wouldn't it be easier to engrave the pieces once they are poured and solid? Rather then mucking around with trying to do it pre pour? I could be missing something and it may not be possible but though I'd add my 2 cents worth!

Wax works well for the screws, but instead of candle wax, pick up a wax toilet ring at the hardware store for about $3. It's a nice soft wax that is easy to get onto the threads and the wax stays in the threads, unlike candle wax which tends to come off in flakes. One ring will last you a long long time.
