    The last of the lead; I think. About 1200 pounds, a surprising amount went into the leading and trailing ends of the keels. On the leading edge it will do an excellent job of reinforcing the keel against collision damage. There is already a 2 inch solid round bar with a 1/2 inch by 5 inch wide flat bar behind that; but with the lead behind it as well, I don't see that as a weak spot. Pouring lead is always an amazing thing to watch. I'm glad the new crew got to have the opportunity. Many thanks to George, Andy, Zach, Terry, Jack, Hugh and Bart for their work this past weekend. Good friends, good work, good food, and relaxing cool evenings beside a fire of old cribbing and pallets.
    Betsy has been patching and prepping the dragons and this coming weekend is more dragon work. The weather is forecast to be warm and sunny. And we are looking forward to it. The solar tank is holding water and Betsy already has her inflatable chair out by the tub, just waiting for some sunny skies.
    So if you can, I highly recommend getting out to your shop, shed, yard, or basement and build that thing you always wanted to build. Especially if it involves molten lead, making new friends, and ending the day with sore muscles in a warm tub of water, or beside a fire under the stars. --Doug
    WARNING: Lead is extremely be hazardous to your heath. Most people don't know how or why, but somebody important who had worked for the EPA, told them that was the case and assured them it had destroyed their uncle's brain, turned his blood yellow and cause him to eat babies. Just looking at molten lead without a full class one hazmat suite will cause you brain damage. Consider yourself warned. It is now your duty to spread the fear to every neurotic recess of the internet.
    Rational Precautions for Working with Lead
    -- It most dangerous to the developing brain, so women who may become pregnant and children are the most susceptible.
    -- Transfer is commonly through dust ingestion. So have no food or drink. And avoid cutting or grinding or other activity that will create dust.
    -- Do not smoke as it will vaporize any dust and lead vapor will easy be absorbed in the lungs.
    -- Keep the molten lead below 900F/482C. It melts just over 600F/315C so just turn off the heat once the last ingot is melted.
    -- Control the contaminated area so it does not spread to food, water or others.
    -- When done, remove your work cloths and bag them.
    -- Take a shower before you do anything else in the house.
    -- Wash your work cloths with no other items.

    Diesel+lead+steel cannot have any electrolysis, diesel is oil based. The biggest problem you'll have is the fact that diesel is hygroscopic and water will absorb into it, potentially causing corrosion of your keels. You need to paint a sealer on the inside which is intended for diesel fuel tanks, then you'll be fine. I recommend sealing all of your fuel tanks with a paint on sealer.

    Congratulations Doug, it's been almost a year now since I reminded you that you're not getting any younger and to quit focusing on the submersible and concentrate on the boat. A year later and I can see you have at least 3-3 more to go and it will be finished. I told you that if you promoted it people would help which you scoffed at but here we are today and you have 5-6 helpers a week. Imagine where Seeker would be if you kept wasting time on the submersible and you dint have this support? Nice to see the grandkid and dog are not in the construction zone any more - the other point you reminded me to mind my own business on. Seems like you have taken my advice despite lashing out at me. Good luck with the project, it's coming along well and you look like you are having fun and enjoying the comradery. I hope your dream comes true sooner than later.

    not sure if someone already made a similar comment but diesel is non polar and shouldn't react with the metal but maybe when if water gets in there and goes to the bottom might get a little nasty. back in the day they use to repair gas tanks with copper and lead solder.

    Sealing the fuel tanks.
    I may have missed it in the video how you intend to seal the tanks but we used a sealant from aircraft spruce in wing tanks. We ave similar caveties on our commecial fishing trawler (steel), its common to fill the void with Concrete (because its cheap) but lead can also be used, weld a lid on and to avoid rust issues we fill the void with plain old motor oil through a bung. My boat was built in 1976 and I cut open a tank built like this and some minor surface rust but nothing to make me think it wont last another 40 years.

    One thing you may want to think about Doug, where you cut the piece of rib out to put the scuttle's in, Should you not have refitted it and welded it to the scuttle frame to keep the strength integrity of the hull intact.

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  8 лет назад

      +Peter Mundy Right. That's really more like a longitudinal, but it's really not even that big of a part of the structure. It's mainly there to help form the hull when it is being bent. The curve of the hull and the deck above are the primary reinforcements.

    Just had a thought that i'd love you to answer in one of the videos - what kind of electric and welding gas bills do you run up every month and do you ever have problems with not having enough power to run a house, workshop and 'ship yard SVSeeker' of a domestic electrical board?

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  8 лет назад

      +Jonathan Cook We run off a 100 amp panel. Last months electric bill was $109 and I refilled on CO2 tank for $65. If you want to build a basic 36 foot steel sailboat, you could do it for less than $35,000 dollars. Money is not the problem. Courage is.

    • @jonathancook4022
      @jonathancook4022 8 лет назад

      +SV Seeker A lot less than I expected! Building a sailboat is not on my agenda, but interested anyway as the skills are highly transferable and every year I build a ski lift, which gets more inventive and elaborate every year, and good metalworking skills are the key to such a build.

    Having no clue about boat building, but how do you know how the boat will sit in the water, with all this lead weight at the bottom, in different places? Will the deck be sort of flush with the water? Just ponderin' on how that might work, as the boat will only get into the water after it's finished. Or do you adjust weight distribution afterwards?

    I had an idea saw yoy had trouble pushing the masts together in another video. If you welded brackets two on each mast..then you could attach those chain things and pull them together.. sorry I do not know the word for them.

    consider sealing the welds in the fuel tanks with epoxy to prevent any leakage.

    Doug, what is the purpose of the plate outside the scupper? The water is already outside the boat when it passes through the scupper opening. Another plate means more maintenance, another obstruction outside, another thing to rust.

    • @SVSeeker

      +MrCGChief I suggest you don't put them on your boat.

    Regarding the water leak - maybe you could just stuff a big enough piece of polyethylene in there and it would act like a pool liner.

    Keeping the diesel fuel with the lead is a bad idea... You risk rust accumulating into the fuel and clogging filters or god forbid eating piston rings on the engine.
    In my opinion, your options include:
    1) Having a large filter and pump and using at least 1" pipe for the fuel to ensure rust that does accumulate clogs an easily replaceable filter instead of getting stuck in small piping you can't access or fix
    2) Making either aluminium or stainless steel boxes to house fuel. Best option as they won't compromise the engine
    3)Using some sort of gas tank sealer to coat the inside, implausible as they require you to shake the gas tank.

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  8 лет назад

      +Ariel Lezen I don't think I agree. Even if the fuel was directly exposed to the lead, which is not the plan, I don't think there would be any significant absorption of the lead into the fuel.

  • @nanosleep4407

    Have you tested the coal tar epoxy with diesel? Will some of the epoxy dissolve in the fuel and gum up your system. Maybe tar the inside of a pint jar, fill it with diesel, and let it sit on the shelf a while. The steel and lead don't bother me so much. Aren't diesel and gasoline dielectric? I've worked on plenty of in-tank pumps with bare electrical connections.

    Great content as ever. Have you tried Plasti Dip paint for sealing the tank. it doesn't tend to go brittle when its cold. its based on the chemical paint thats used on swimming pools. although the plasti dip brand is more flexible. We use it for painting onto the ware areas of our coasteering wetsuits.

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  8 лет назад +1

      +The ClanAdventures Not yet. I did get some Flex Seal. We'll give that a shot and that last drip.

    • @TheClanAdventures
      @TheClanAdventures 8 лет назад

      The swimming pool paint is referred to as Chlorinated rubber paint. it works it way into the smallest crack then sets rubbery. The plasti dip does not run into the cracks as well but does give a very flexible coating. The price is night and day between the product. It might be a lot cheaper in the USA here in Scotland its 4 to 6 times the price of the Chlorinated rubber paint.
