I was a single mom for about ten years when my daughters were very young; my youngest was just a year old and her older sister was three. Money was tight so eating out was not an option. Like Rachel I wanted to teach my daughters good table manners, to include what utensils to use. When my youngest was almost four I started my “restaurant” that was open every Saturday evening. During the week I would ask my daughters what type of restaurant they wanted to visit on Saturday night and gave them a choice of different cuisines. My daughters are now 44 and 47 and we remember those dinners with much fondness. It was such a wonderful way to teach them good manners and give them experiences that I wasn’t able to afford by taking them out to eat. I was the cook and the server and loved it! A few years into this Saturday night tradition I met my wonderful husband who has been a wonderful father to “our” girls. He was always proud to take them out to restaurants because he knew they had good manners and would know how to handle themselves. Your children are re diving excellent parenting and you should be proud of the job you are doin*!

@@lienbijs1205 The rest of the week was fine. My girls were taught table manners as soon as they could feed themselves. They were expected to be polite and respectful at all times. My mother lived with me for several years and she took care of my girls when I was working. However as a single mom, I often had to work a second job and I wasn’t always home for meals. I think you missed the point….these Saturday “restaurant “ dinners were special and provided the opportunity for my girls to try different cuisine….meals I couldn’t take them out to experience.

Ashley Williams - that’s because fake food is loaaaaaaaded with stuff that adds flavor to it to make the eater want even more. Real food doesn’t have these additives so it doesn’t trick the eater into craving more of it. Food with additives offers quick dopamine hits to the eater. Kids are literally getting high on fake “food” and if that patten can be established early in their body, it’s a hard habit to break, hence the obesity we see and the lifelong tastes developed in adults who grew up on this diet

You warmed my heart! My mom did this for me as a child and for her grandchildren! We always laughed about how her grandkids, at preschool age did not beg for cookies from grandmama, but for asparagus with hollandaise! My mom was always one to serve children the same fare as adults at her epicurean parties when I was growing up. If the adults had shrimp cocktail, the kids had little versions of it! Other people would just serve the kids some hotdogs, but Mama would take care to treat her smallest guests with the same care as the adults with kid-sized portions of all the same treats. This shows respect for children and teaches them to explore cuisine and be open-minded, just as you stated - what a lovely education for kids lucky enough to have thoughtful parents like you! Keep up the lovely way you are raising your kiddos - as a parent whose kids are now grown, I can say this paid off in having children who were polite in restaurants and at formal events like weddings and who were never picky eaters. I love that my daughter used to order "water with lemon" even at the age of three. lol My kids grew up to love cooking for others and travel to explore other cultures - your kids are set up for success as citizens of the world! I am so surprised that it isn't a thing what is concidered normal in the USA because I don't know any better day after day to let children eat the same food and having proper table manners. My granddaughter of 17 months eats already everything what you put in front of her and the same as everybody. Of course also shrimps and other seafood and all kind of vegetables including asparagus in the season. I don't think that my daughter would accept it if I give her child unhealthy food like hotdogs while the adults eat normal food.

@@lienbijs1205 I think it is more of a thing now, but my mama was an "early adopter" doing this in the 60's-70s. My own kids were appalled when we went to a very lovely family wedding and the truly sweet bride , in a very well-intentioned attempt to include food that was kid friendly, had arranged for all the kids to have a kid's meal of chicken strips and fries. My 4 and 6 year old had several adults literally trying to bribe them for their plane fare and they ended up trading their kids meals for shrimp cocktails, artichoke pasta, a lovely liver pate, quiche Florentine and some Calvados-based crem bulee that other adults didn't want. At one point the whole table rolled with laughter when my 4 year old requested in her baby voice "additional lemon wedges." I think things in the US are better now that more foods are commonly available, but in the mid-70's when I was a kid my mom would drive 45 minutes across Houston to go to the Epicurean market to find ingredients that are available at every corner now.

We are for sure living in different cultures, I didn't realize that before, but here it would be concidered quit rude to show you don"t like the food and exchange it with food of children. I mean, if you don't like shrimps, paté or whatever, what is fully accepted, you would tell the waiter in advance that you don't like it. It is not healthy to eat too much liver but here it is one of the favorite toppings on sandwiches, also from children.

This family is so great. What terrific parents. They are the kind of people who deserve to be parents too. Because being a mom or dad is a privilege, yet so many people don’t see it that way. So many kids get pushed off onto the grandparents, or are treated poorly, abused, raised in terrible homes, etc. and to people who should have *never* had them. So it’s beautiful to see people raising the next generation like this. Kudos to this family.

You can’t judge people who put their childrens in their grandparents! I ask my mom in law to pick my children up cause I’m a working mom and finish work late in the evening to provide my child education, sport, foods, and clothing, instead I spend my holidays and each weekend with my child doing activities. I agree for abused children but do not put us working mom who has no choice but working children is not only about love, it requires material and extra care for development.

@@Mickaelasama that is literally the complete opposite of what i am talking about. i was referring to people who have kids and then give them up for their parents to completely raise them while they go off and live life like they never had a kid. Grandparents are there for help when you need someone to get them from school or watch them for you when you are working, i never meant it in that way, clearly.....chill out.

This is AMAZING! Absolutely wonderful! It's so nice to see someone teaching their kids how to behave respectfully, politely and with grace. This is one of the many things that is wrong with society today. Not enough thought is given to teaching children how to live well, how to interact with others in society, how to behave like classy, educated, good human beings. If this was done more often, I think we would see a shift in today's overly sensitive, my-way-or-the-highway mentality. Well done, Mom & Dad, for expanding the kids' horizons!!

My parents always made an effort to have such “fancy” dinners on the weekends not least because those were the only times we could have dinner as a family since my dad was usually working late during the week. We always had to help either with the preparations and cooking, setting the table and thereby learning how one sets a proper table, lighting the candles and cleaning up afterwards. Weekend dinners were and are always special in my family and my brother and I even kept this habit at university and now that we are moved out and working. It taught me how to cook (things beyond a scrambled egg), how to set a table (placing the cutlery and glasses properly) and how to host dinners etc. On top of that these dinners were a time of long conversations about really any topic and I am certain they contributed to my brothers and my ability to hold a conversation about virtually any topic without a problem. The life skills taught at the dinner table cannot be overestimated!!
