  • A short overview of how I designed and built a universal remote control with integrated IR, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Its LVGL-based user interface is running on an ESP32.

    OMOTE is an ESP32 based open source universal remote. Its capacitive 2.8” touchscreen provides an intuitive and snappy user interface for switching devices and settings. No hub or docking station is required as the remote features infrared, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. With its well optimized power consumption, OMOTE can run for months on a charge. And since the design files are open source, you can fully customize them to your devices and needs.

      Yes, the only thing that's really missing is the clean look of an injection molded part, but besides that is hell of a nice project. But that's not an option, but maybe you can get away with a lot of polishing or vapor smoothing.

    This is pretty awesome. Great project and production on the video. With the Harmony hubs, one of the bonuses is the ir transmitter could be set stationary behind a cabinet with IR blasters wired to wherever they were needed. I imagine it wouldn't be a big lift to have another ESP32 controlled from this remote that would house an IR blaster for a similar experience. That way you wouldn't need to worry about pointing anymore. Maybe a future project for you 😁

    • @Max-Kern
      @Max-Kern  Год назад

      You‘re right, that would be a great addition! Even after increasing the IR LED current, I have to point the remote right on the TV.

    • @jmr
      @jmr Год назад +3

      That should be easy because I believe this remote does MQTT. I'd use the Tasmota firmware to create the IR blaster.. but wait.. there's more. You could have as many blasters as you wanted. That's not even a 10 minute project since they sell ESP with IR already attached.

    • @Max-Kern
      @Max-Kern  Год назад +2

      Sure, you could just edit the button's size in CAD and swap the color and the playback buttons.

    • @madmax2069
      @madmax2069 Год назад

      Yeah, the colored extra function buttons should be on top but below the screen. The media buttons such as play/pause, RW/FF buttons should be just below the D-pad and volume/channel buttons, pretty much every remote is set up like that.
      My Logitech Harmony 665, Sony Android TV remote are set up that way, heck even the Roku remote is set up similarly where the media functions are below the D-pad.

    Nice project! Now that Logitech has stupidly stopped making their universal remotes, THIS is an excellent option. Even better.
    Would you please let me know, specifically, what filament you used to print the button contact skin?
    I was wondering if there was some kind of filament that could be used to print a replacement contact skin/sheet for remotes that stopped working due to bad contacts.
    Please let me know what that filament is. I'd really appreciate it.

    • @Max-Kern
      @Max-Kern  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Actually this project uses only regular PETG filament. The buttons are tactile switches so there is no need for a contact skin. I was thinking about using a silicone keypad but these are really expensive in low quantities.

    • @BlondieSL
      @BlondieSL 10 месяцев назад

      @@Max-Kern Ah! I must have mis-viewed that part. I thought it looked like a rubbery (TPU) contact skin..
      *Yup! I watched the video again and I now see the tactile switches*
      Very soon, I have to embark on designing a Universal Remote to replace our Logitech 650 series remotes.
      I was trying to find a TPU based conductive filament to make a contact skin, but very rare to find and what I did find was STUPIDLY PRICED!
      I may just have to use tactile switches after all.
      Fortunately, I have a massive amount of these from an old Behringer studio mixer that I've stripped down for parts. The switches on this are good quality, so I could use those.

    I've already moved this to the top of my "ToDo" project list. I'm thinking about salvaging an old and broken remote for the buttons because I like the rubbery feeling when pressing over printed plastik. Do you think that's possible?

    • @BlondieSL
      @BlondieSL 10 месяцев назад

      No kidding!
      We have several Logitech 600 series universal remotes.
      I just love these things. We've been able to program them for all our equipment, even the not-so-common equipment like Channel Master PAL7000 DVR and the DVR+. Hell, even our old Kenwood subwoofer works.
      But then, Logitech stopped making them.
      Now, a couple of the remotes have buttons that are no longer working or are very hard to make a connection.
      So I want to build my own univ. remote since I know how to capture the codes and send them out. But I was using Arduino for those tests. I now want to use ESP32 boards.
      This project looks cool and a nice tight case.
      But what really caught my eye is that he printed out the button sheet, that makes contact to the PCB conductor rings. I NEED THAT FILAMENT.
      I suspect that it's Conductive TPU, but I'm not 100% sure. If it is, I can't seem to find any on line at all.
      If I can get a roll of that, I'd first try to make a new "overlay" for these 650/655 remotes to see if that solves the problem.
      Otherwise, with my CAD design skills, the remote will be pretty bulky. LOL

    Very sad video. When I first clicked on it I was so excited that I finally found the dream universal remote. I grabbed my wallet and was ready to follow any link and pay any price. After watching the video and realizing that it was not actually available for purchase I was very disappointed. I do not have the talent or machinery to build my own. I presently have 5 remotes beside me on the couch. I guess I will continue to keep all my remotes in reach. Most of the universal remotes available are either too complex or too simple. This remote looked just right. Now that I know the dream remote exists, I will never be content with all the others and die a broken man. I will forever think and wonder of what could have been. Very sad indeed!
