well it's not exactly hard either though. Take what you do for a living, do you find it difficult? It's technically challenging to replace an engine for a complete novice or someone that doesn't do it for a living. For a mechanic..it's tuesday
I’ve wrenched on my own cars for about 30 years and was a diesel mechanic for a bit at a Kenworth repair center and then went to work for a construction company as fleet mechanic. I have so many insane stories to tell. I don’t think people realize just how many unsafe vehicles share the roads with everyone else. Anytime I see these videos of the vehicles that are complete rust buckets or jerry-rigged and still operating on the road with the rest of us, I just remember the amount of owner/operator rigs that slip passed inspections. It’s terrifying when you realize the amount of potential carnage a loaded tractor/trailer can do to the rest of the vehicles on the road. Drive safe folks.

Depends on the owner. I've been doing brakes for years and trust myself more than any dealership. I took my car for a brake disk (rotor) recall a few years ago : checked their work afterwards and found they had stripped half the wheel studs. I replaced the studs myself.

Y'know, I sympathize with some of the customers. I've figured out a whole heck of a lot about a whole heck of a lot of things in my time on this Earth, but automotive work is still largely a mystery to me. I know when I'm starting to have trouble with my steering or my suspension or my brakes or my exhaust, but very little idea how bad it really is. It could be that my disks are a bit warped or it could be that my whole front end is about to riot. It turns out that my first car was a bit of a joke in my local shop. The suspension was royally screwed the whole time I owned it. Riding entirely on the springs, swaying all over the place, major safety concern. And I was blissfully unaware because the thing drove like a La-Z-boy on wheels. So relaxing on road trips... my passengers would fall asleep for hours at a time.
When are drivers going to learn that you need to let the pros do this stuff now cause with all of the extra sensors in cars and trucks now it seems like DIY is going out of style. After seeing a lot of people just drive off without paying for repairs that the car needs badly I’m wondering how these people would handle driving an EV could you trust them with a different kind of car?
And who is a pro? Licensed doesn't mean anything anymore. Dealerships all the way down to single bay mechanics shops have licensed morons. It's hard to find a "pro"

Most places in America don't have laws like that and those places that do vary wildly. If a mechanic sees something dangerous like some of these, sometimes they will have the owner sign a waiver accepting liability of the vehicle to absolve themselves of any legal ramifications.
