  • Who was the historical figure Jesus of Nazareth? Not the divine Jesus Christ, but the man shaped by the political, social and economic contexts of early first century Palestine? In 'Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth', Reza Aslan, biblical scholar and author of the international bestseller 'No god but God: The Origins, Evolution', and 'Future of Islam', takes us on a journey of the life and times of one of the most influential men in history. In his book, he convincingly shows why and how the likely historical facts were transformed into a very different religious narrative by the writers of the gospels long after Jesus’ crucifixion. The controversy at FOX News - who seemed offended by the idea that a Muslim scholar would write a book about Jesus - aside, Zealot proves to be “a lucid, intelligent page-turner,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

I'm so glad Reza A is still doing speeches and seminars!
This intellectual human being's work has helped me so much over the past couple years, and during the time I was bridging over from Christianity to Islam....his work has opened my eyes (and still is opening my eyes) and helped me attain a healthier perspective and context of Religion, Jesus, and Islam....... while maintaining positive power and clarity in my own faith, truth, spirituality, evolution and continuing life experience....that shift wasn't easy at 1st but now in 2022 seeing this bear beautiful fruit and more peace within, I can now say with all my heart, that shift was worth it for me personally...💯💕 #TheJourneyContinues💕
I finally came around to taking the time to read Zealot in its entirety during this Ramadan. I can't wait to receive it, it's being delivered right now 😄❣
I still have to hear Reza A in person but I'm very grateful....God bless him!! much peace and love to him and his family!❣
Happy Ramadan Mubarak To All!🌍🌎🌏 Much Peace, Love, Joy, and Prosperity!❣

I think that the way he describes Jesus Christ vs Jesus of Nazareth is essential to understand that they are two different people: the historical Jesus and the Jesus of faith. How ever accurate the historical Jesus is or is not, seeing him so reachable and human makes me closer to my faith in him. The human nature of Jesus described on this book, makes him much more admirable.

The most profound statement in the book is when he describe everything about Jesus and then he says his followers went to their death believing and screaming that they had seen him again and that makes him worth following. I am of the mind that most people are fans of Jesus instead of followers

I'm a bit confused as I have very little knowledge on the subject. Aslan says that the gospels were written years after jesus and by people who never actually met him. From my understanding, John, James, and Mathew were Jesus' Apostles during his lifetime and their writing's are in the Bible. Are they different people? Doesn't Aslan say they were illiterate. I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm finding all this very fascinating and would like some of this cleared up.

The authors of those books weren't actually the people they were named after. Its was entire communities of early christians who wrote the gospels and not the actual apostles. The gospel of John for example was written by people in the Johannan school ie people the apostle John probably taught the gospels too.

    • @wolf7el356

Those Books were not written by the actual Apostles, they were written by the followers of those Apostles. In fact, historically, the earliest Book of the Bible was in written around 70-72 AD & Jesus died in the year 30. So roughly 40 years after his death is when then first book was written. And none of the Apostles actually wrote anything themselves, they had their sayings transcribed by people who actually were writers.

      Jesus never led a rebellion
““Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.”

To believe means, saying we belong to a religion. Then we can live the life as we wish.
To have faith is when we believe in a religion and we TRUST in what religion says is true and we follow the message as it tell us to do. We have FAITH because we have experienced that what the message says, is really true.

16:10 There are no "woods" around Galilee; it is all desert. Wandering preachers were all over the place in those days. "John the Baptizer" was the leader of history's most famous "Doomsday Sect". His constant rantings about "The End is Near!" got him, and his followers expelled from first Jerusalem, then Bethel. His sect finally settled in Qumran on the shores of the Jordan River. One "Jesus" was supposedly appointed his successor. The name "Yeshua" (Romanized as "Jesu", and Greek: "Jesus".), was and still is, the most common given boy name in all Israel.

It stands to reason that the "Kingdom of God " Jesus was talking about would consider Jesus as a descendant of David the rightful King instead of Herod. Old Testament speaks of the God's promise that would always be a Davidian King on the throne of Judea ( specifically Israel) So to assume Jesus as a rightful King of Judea would mean to fulfill the promise given by JHWH
