While I would agree with you that higher education is in some ways intertwined with systems of power and influence, it is also the largest arena of criticism against things like corporate and government elites. Essentially, a degree shouldn't reflect being right. Rather, when it comes to the humanities, it reflects having relevant skills and outlooks that are crucial to understanding the fields in which you learn. You can't expect everyone to learn biblical greek, talk to archaelogists, or read every word on Jesus. The most reliable setting that introduces new ideas, while checking old knowledge is still academia. If you can think of a better setting, or come up with a better methodology that replaces a college, social science education then I'm all ears.

Anyone who has taken a degree must acknowledge that even though there is a claim to uniformity across the board as regards to state standards, what an individual Universities actually teaches/profess's is hugely different! The historical knowledge that Reza has must be incredibly intimidating for many Christians as most base their faith primarily on emotion.
I know for me when I started to learn more about my false faith it was like I was married for 50 years and realised the person I was married to (and madly in love with) was not the person that I thought they were.
At first It is a heart breaking reality, but you get over it and in the end you are truly free.

This is a most wonderful lecture about religion - the fact, the myth, the importance. While some of you may not have much interest, to those that do, this will be a well spent couple of hours. Reza Aslan has other presentations (I allude to his specific address regarding fundamentalism - in another video, where most modern forms of religion are most similar to idolatry and not spirituality). For all my years of relentlessly studying my faith and religion - he seems to sum it up the best. Now, that I no longer need to say what has already been said so eloquently and succinctly by this person, I can go back to the universal language of music. Sharing a truth, that has always been inexpressible by words. Enjoy !!!

The relation of Christianity and Judaism is very similar to the relation of Sunnism / Shiism religions and Islam in many ways. They sprouted from an older version of the religion, and ended up far far away. They are also vastly more popular than their roots. Look how many people practice Judaism in the world, 14 million. Christianity, 2.2 billion. Look how many people practice Islam, a few thousands at best. Sunnism+Shiism, and their sects reach up to 1.6 billion. One has to give credit to Christians who never claim they are practicing Judaisim, because they are aware of the fact that it's a completely different religion. Sunni and Shi'ia actually believe they are practicing Islam whereas their religions completely ignore Quran's messages by piggybacking man made hadith and sunnah of their choice. I am a muslim,and I want to clarify some thing for christians. What Reza concluded in his book does not fit with Islamic view or Islamic theology,so stop calling him as a bias! Islam does not say Jesus was killed by Roman nor jews . Rather God protected him and sent him to heaven. Moreover, Islam says Jesus was born miraculously. Therefore, Christians should deal with facts that Reza concluded, which are Jesus was a Jewish, so when Jesus said Son of God what did he really mean for a jewish community ?and Paul has never seen him,nor did he walk with Jesus! Deal with these facts and face the truth that your religion was established by Paul not Jesus.

A lot of people blame the religion for the countless murders that took place in our history. Instead of blaming the religion why not blame the root cause? The people manipulating the teachings for their own gain. The religions around the world constantly evolve to adapt to the progress of our civilizations. Ultimately, in my opinion the people are the root cause of these murders and hate crimes. Just as all religions can be practiced in a peaceful way, it can also be practiced in a hateful manner towards one another claiming it's just. I am a christian and just watched a muslim man express his thoughts and all it made me do is reinforce my faith and I wanted to learn more so I can expand my faith and knowledge. Take the time to learn from one another so we can grow in our faiths. Just because someone is of a different faith it doesn't mean you shut them out. It allows you to see things from a different perspective and perhaps allows you to ask the right questions to lead you where you need to be. Stop wasting time spreading hate and trying to keep count of who's killed how many people and spend more time enlightening yourself. I know people of many religions and they respect my faith as I respect theirs, that is the only way we grow as a community. Prime example is his reference to the well.

Stupidity means someone who can't comprehend information, ignorance means someone who just simply doesn't know. You can change an ignorant person by educating them. As an atheist, I would agree with your comment in almost every single aspect, except the part where you say that those who are malicious and maniacal will manipulate religion for their own gain. As critical thinkers of religion, we should be quite frank and honest about what religion actually is. It can be whatever you want-- a religion is not peaceful nor is it evil. With that said, lets just say that those who choose to attach religion to their evil acts don't do it in order to consciously deceive and lie about where their actions come from; they just attach religion to it because they can find connection with it. A slave owner can connect to Christianity just as an abolitionist can.
Other than that point, I really enjoyed your point that we should all just respect each other's perspectives and that the death toll is irrelevant to conversations like these.

The only difference between him and those he mentioned is, he hides behind his intellect. Be watchful of people in sheep's clothing. historical fact of Resurrection????!!!........actually in the bible, when people asked for jesus for sign for his "miracle", he said my miracle was the miracle of Jonah.....jonah was swallowed for 3 days and 3 nights....and he STAYED alive the whole time......jesus compared his miracle to to Jonah's.....it can't be the period cause again according to the bible jesus was "killed" Friday afternoon and rose on sunday morning....that's a day and half...therefore he meant about the actual not dying part...cause if someone falls into the water and get swallowed by a big whale, we all would think he is dead, but that is why it's a miracle cause he wasn't dead in the first place....same happened for jesus, he was nailed on the cross and left there and any person would think he must be dead....but he wasn't....i'm talking from biblical prospective.....regardless whether i believe in it or not.....Riza Aslan kept it within logical understanding of jesus from a historical prospective.

Historians ignore the teachings attributed to Jesus because there is no way to know whether he actually delivered them. But I say unto you- it is the teachings that matter, not the historical times. And the same holds true for all spiritual teachings and philosophy. Whether the teachings were delivered by Bob Smith or Zeus is secondary, it is the teachings themselves and what they mean to us that matters!

Haik Biglari There was a huge messianic movement in Palestine in the beginning of the 1st century, people claiming to be the messiah, some better known and with a larger following than Jesus. When a messiah was executed, his followers packed up and went home. The difference in Jesus' situation is that his followers didn't for some reason. I'm agnostic and I still wonder about that.Although Jesus was not successful, just as the others, in fulfilling the Jewish prophecy of what the messiah was supposed to accomplish,his followers still continued. They had to change the definition of messiah.
wait okay so this isn't an attack, I'm finding this talk really interesting.. But Reza stated that he is removing the Historical Jesus from the Spiritual Jesus, including what it written in the gospels... And then he goes on to talk about Jesus' teachings that were written in the gospels to support his argument. It kinda seems like he's picking and choosing what to believe happened here? If we don't know that the gospels are true for sure or historically accurate, then why is he using their content to argue. Why can't a christian shoot down his arguments about Jesus not being the true Messiah by telling him that he still lives and his business is not yet done? It seems like a little bit of a flaw to me, but maybe I'm just nitpicking
What I got from this talk was that Reza has taken those stories from the Gospels, those things it teaches us about what Jesus said and did in his time and reviews them through the scope of the time that he lived.
As he said we know very little about the Historical Jesus if you remove all the religious texts, but if you take what little you know, put that to the background of the time in which he lived (which we do know) and carefully apply the stories of the Gospel to it in context then you can begin to see the shape of a man very different to that of a Spiritual Jesus. I can see how it could be seen as "picking and choosing" but he does it in the context of a historical background, using what we do know to interpret what we have.
I think the point that resonated most in this talk was that idea that how we perceive the world now, how we think about right and wrong, truth and falsehood is incredibly far removed from the way someone in the first century thought about those things.
He mentioned that if you remove the historical Jesus from the spiritual Jesus. Knowing the three main facts about him, then placing him in the world of which he lived in at that time (which there are numerous known facts about), that you can then piece together the true meaning of his teachings. He goes deeper into the bible itself due to the questions being asked towards the end of his lecture, but he's using the facts about the times, and the facts about the man Jesus to then support/or decode certain details/or books of the bible. Like when he went on to talking about the book of Paul for example.
So I’ve research countlessly Reza on church interviews, speeches, his Family, marriage, etc…I’ll read zealot when I see it at Good Will Store.
Reza is a pantheism who is stirring up to people to confusion. He reminds me of Pope where he is accepting all universal faith is good in Jesus eyes. (This is happening all over nations too).

I just read the book. Everyone should read it. You can then do your own research as to why you agree or disagree with his conclusions. He speaks like a feminist yet hardly mentions the role of women, particularly the Magdalene, in this book. The Magdalene is in all four gospels, as is the "woman" who pours perfume on Jesus' feet. I think he was afraid of the "Jesus marriage" issue, especially if it was with the Magdalene.

Aslan sort of covered that part when he said that the entire Nativity thing never happened. One reason why it didn't happen was that if it was that important, then why was it omitted in both Mark and John. Jesus only read the scriptures in one gospel. Usually if it only happens in one or two gospels, you can say they were made up. Heck Jesus damns a fig tree forever for not bearing fruit in two gospels. This means that any mention of his childhood, if it wasn't in all four gospels, probably means it wasn't true either.
It's really easy to discover how I disagree because he lies constantly. His viewpoint only exists on lies. It's easy to locate where all of the mistakes are because they are brazen lies and warping of the facts. The trouble is that he has a big platform because he's famous. I think after he ate the human brains with the cannibal most people realized he was a moral idiot and we really shouldn't get this type of talk from a moral idiot. Kepha/Simon was not converted when Messiah was on the earth - and there are several places where Messiah spoke about how one must convert. These were lessons that could not be learned until Holy Spirit/Comforter was sent back, then the Holy Spirit guided all who were interested into conversion. None but Messiah Himself had the Holy Spirit permanently in Him... though some had Holy Spirit come and go, here and there to guide them to do things - like the High Priest declaring Messiah must die.

He's right in saying people have created their own versions of Jesus, but if you read the Bible for yourself you find that there is only one real Jesus. The problem comes when you look to denominations or other religions without reading the Bible. The answers are in the Bible open it up. If Reza is stating he is a muslim than you have to understand that he believes that the Koran is perfect and is the actual word of God given to Mohammed by the angel Gabriel. Logically, we can deduce that this is now highly unlikely since the koran states that Jesus was not crucified and that it was someone else who God replaced. We know that this is not true sincr we Greek, Roman, Jewish and even secular historians confirming that Jesus was in fact crucified and died under the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate.

I agree with everything except for what you said about Prophethood beginning with Ibrahim. The reason I don't agree with this is because where does it place Prophet Nuh (Noah) who came before Prophet Ibrahim. And I think the best way to define a Prophet, is a human who has receives communication with God and spreads Allah's message. It is clear that Allah spoke with Prophet Adam, and to say that Adam didn't communicate with his children the meaning of life is just preposterous. Additionally, when Adam was put to earth after being sent down from the Garden, he prayed to God for forgiveness. There is no other way to pray other than through language.
Although religions are man made and believing in supernatural Gods and so called 'holy book' miracles claims are rather silly, it helps uneducated folks believe in a heavenly reward, and a nice little earner for preachers.
